Eurovision 2008 - Bonus Content! - Rolf Junior - "One on One"

2008 marks the debut of someone who became a Eurolaul/Eesti Laul fixture for the next few years. Welcome Rolf Junior later Rolf Roosalu when he realised that he wasn't getting any younger.

Rolf did, however, get his start exceptionally young. He was starring in a stage production of Oliver! at the age of eleven. He went on to star in several major children's musicals and stage productions before graduating to big boy musicals like Cats, West Side Story and Miss Saigon. Rolf was no stranger to the stage.

He'd been trying to launch a solo singing career for sometime, but 2008 was the year of the big Rolf push. His first album was set for release later on, and what better way to launch him as a personality in the TV watching audience's consciousness than Eurolaul and a potential Eurovision appearance.

His song was One on One, a song oozing with sex appeal, although Rolf appears to bring some self-aware comedy to his stage persona. Slightly larger than life and not averse to laughing at himself while having fun all the same. The song was written by Vahur Valgmaa who had been using the name Peter Ross in the past and had written several songs for Eurolaul including for Hatuna and Riita Riistop.

It's definitely something that allows Rolf to bring his stage performance experience to the screen in terms of his slightly creepily sexual, moustache-brandishing character. He knows where the camera is and he's going to be finding it at every opportunity. He still does need to work on some of those high vocals though.

It was a tough year to be in Eurolaul. Not only was there a popular comedy entry, but there were several up and coming popular talent show entrants who also had character and could sing better. Nevertheless Rolf edged into fourth place, missing out on the super-final but successfully launching his album and a series of future national final entries.

For the next four years, Rolf became a fixture at Eesti Laul. He had another go in 2018 as well. He may well crop up on more than one occasion in the future in the proper top sixty-four. For now he's bonus content. Rolf did get to grow up. This is his version for Father Figure from a tribute concert for George Michael from 2017
