Some Personality Idioms
to describe your characters
All Brawn and No Brains - Refers to someone who’s strong and muscular, but not very intelligent.
Armchair Critic - People who pretend to know a lot about something, but really don’t know anything about it at all; those who sit back and criticize the way you do something without getting up and helping out. There’s a little armchair critic in all of us. Have you ever criticized an athlete’s performance (or, more likely, a ref’s call)? Or judged a dancer or singer on a reality TV show?
Born with a Silver Spoon in one’s Mouth - Means you come from a wealthy family with a high social position. The spoon you actually use these days probably isn’t a great indicator of your wealth, but in the Middle Ages, only commoners used wooden spoons. This idiom speaks more to the spoon-bearer’s personality than just their social status: Entitled, naive, presumptuous. All the qualities you’d expect of someone who wasn’t allowed to leave the palace walls.
Butter wouldn’t Melt in his/her Mouth - Describes someone who appears demure, innocent or sincere, but is actually unkind and devious. It’s saying you’re so cool and collected, that you wouldn’t even be warm enough to melt butter.
Doubting Thomas - A skeptic who refuses to believe something without personal experience or physical evidence. The idiom comes from apostle Thomas (Didymus), who did not believe Jesus had risen from the dead. He said to the other disciples: “Unless I shall see in His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my fingers into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.” While being skeptical and demanding truth are wonderful qualities to have when learning new things, constant doubters can also come off as being overly critical or looking down on others’ beliefs.
Dyed-in-the-Wool - Describes a person’s deeply ingrained political, cultural or religious beliefs. It comes from the fact that when wool is dyed before it is woven, the color is less likely to fade. In the positive sense, you could be a dyed-in-the-wool sports fan, meaning you’re faithful to your team, even when they suck. But, it can also mean you are unwilling to be open to other ideas or beliefs because of how ingrained you are in your own opinions.
Long in the Tooth - Means someone's old. This idiom likely comes from the practice of examining horses’ teeth to determine their age. It’s generally an unkind or humorous way to refer to people who do something they seem too old for.
Shrinking Violet - An exceedingly shy person. This idiom is typically assigned to girls, but who’s “Violet?” The poetic origin of this idiom was describing the flower, not a girl. Sometimes, this idiom is used as “she’s no shrinking violet,” which describes a woman who is outspoken and not afraid to express her views.

How to be a Solar Punk (And a Leftist) ☀️🌱:
1) Stop buying fast fashion and boycott.
I use Depop, Etsy to support small businesses, and you can purchase from small businesses or organizations via other channels. You can also transform your clothing. If a t-shirt is too small, make it a crop top or wear a long shirt underneath! Also look up boycott lists (e.g. BDS movement list) so you know which companies you can or cannot support.
2) Censor and Spread.
Carry around a sharpie or a tube of paint to cover ignorant (e.g. racist) graffiti and scribbles. (I’m not going to refer to it as art). You can also spread information via graffiti.
3) Reuse and Recycle.
I use grocery bags as garbage bags, tin cans to hold things, boxes from online orders, you can even get more creative and make pins out of bottle tops!
4) Get involved physically (if possible).
Volunteer to help people who are lower income, get involved in “beautifying” the community (e.g. displaying the cultural backgrounds of the community, gardening, and protesting).
5) Get involved online.
I sign and repost GoFundMe campaigns, donate what I can, and post information regarding current events. Don’t be apolitical. This is a leftist ideology.
6) Educate yourself.
Go to trusted sources to educate yourself on facts regarding certain matters so you can dispute false claims. There are many PDFs online, podcasts, and overall resources you should take advantage of to increase your awareness and to also help develop a better understanding of those who need your help. Education is what will set us free.
7) Support your local library.
There are so many resources and programs they offer that people are not aware of. And because people are not aware of them they are shut down and underfunded. People who can’t afford computers need to have them available free at cost. Not only to enjoy them leisurely but to do things like job search. Children also have reading assignments which brings them to the library, seeing activities and programs they offer children will help to cultivate a love for learning. The next generations are our future.
8) Learn languages and about cultures.
Certain issues are not limited to certain communities or areas. We need to unite in order to make an impact that will enact change. You will also understand how to positively influence certain people that would otherwise not be receptive due to a different communication style.
9) Take care of your mental health.
“A sick person cannot help a sick person.” -AA saying
You also need to take care of yourself because, simply, you are valuable. Being healthily selfish exists.
10) Be confident.
We unfortunately have to enter spaces that will make us uncomfortable and it will be difficult to be vocal, but it is necessary. In this area, focus on practicing efficient communication methods and building your self-confidence.
11) Confront your own bias.
Everyone is biased in some way shape or form. It is our job to rid ourselves of these biases. Take moral inventory (as they say in 12-step programs) and analyze areas you need to work on.
12) Credit artists and writers.
Being an artist and/or writer should not be a struggling profession. They are an integral part of our society. It’s easy to forget, especially when we take so many screenshots a day, so keep this in mind! I sometimes forget so I can attest it’s not the end of the world but it is a good habit to form.
13) Be anti-A.I.
It is not possible to incorporate A.I. into a leftist environment. It inherently promotes late-stage capitalism.
13) Be a good human. :)
Please comment what I missed! Thank you for reading.

This is the Berserk TTRPG You Need!
The purpose of a tabletop roleplaying game book is to make you want to play it. That’s rule number one. All else can go out the window for all I care. Forget layout, forget gimmicks, forget ad-copy, forget poetry. I don’t care how you accomplish it. The book should ache to be played. If its claws aren’t pulling me from the pdf to a discord group chat and forcing me at gunpoint to type “hey, is anyone free for a game soon?” then I’m afraid it’s not doing its job.
I had to sell all the pretty things on my shelves several years ago to avoid losing my home, and at the moment I sold a beautifully destroyed copy of Berserk Issue 1, I stopped giving a damn about having something cute to put on my shelf. I desire that which demands play.
It’s rare in the realm of one hundred plus page books to find something that does that. Too often you’re inundated with blocks of text describing to you the thing you’re reading. Entire pages detailing the promise of the book instead of, you know, the actual contents of the book. Waxing and waning about hypotheticals. “This book does blank. This game creates blank.” But rarely does the book do either of those things, it just promises you that it will.
Whip pan to Rookie Jet Studio’s “Red Giant.”
Tumblr media
Expletive, expletive, expletive. This book makes me feel alive.
It’s fitting as I’m rereading Berserk right now (slowly buying the beautiful, black-leather omnibus editions as a way of healing, I think). Reading Red Giant made me think back to that beat up copy of Berserk, and to the used bookstore I sold it to, and the power of that made me want to buy a physical copy of Red Giant on the spot. If only it wasn’t print-on-demand. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but I believe the book deserves better.
The layout done by Emanuele Galletto features many deep blacks and cursed reds. It’s clean and elegant, framed perfectly by Juwan Yi’s brutal illustrations. There’s not a chance that Drive Thru could do the colors justice. This is a book that demands. And for printing it demands a professional printer. It demands its own black leather. It demands an embossed red moon on the cover. It demands Corey Burns name in foil on the spine for the excellent world building and mechanic’s-driven writing. Even if he decided to put snobbish philosophy quotes throughout.
Even in that regard, the ones Burns chose to feature within the one hundred and twenty pages add to the bleak sobriety of the world. You’re diving head first into Castlevania territory. You get quotes from Baldwin, Nietzsche, and Sartre. It gave me hints of Kingdom Death and the blood-filled streets of Yarnham. This is a world where deep-voiced narrators talk about hopelessness and nihilism. It’s an edgy, gothic nightmare. The kind of anime you’d love if you were fourteen again.
Tumblr media
The system is where the game hooked me though. It’s where this worldbuilding shines through—not in lengthy blocks of lore text, but in the character creation itself. It’s a simple, four-stat system. The kind you’d be familiar with if you’ve played any other game (video, board, or ttrpg). Along with Health, Spirit (mana), and Sanity (which functions more like Insight from Bloodborne than it does, say, sanity in Call of Cthulhu).
The archetypes are where this takes shape. Stats are assigned to you based on your archetype, and each one comes with its own special skills, much like any dungeon crawler. But it’s the packaging of these things together and the limiting of skills that makes these feel truly special. Harkening to the role-infused Troika! backgrounds, Red Giant prescribes you a piece of the world with each archetype. Simple yet evocative names that range from the kick-ass-driven Slayer to the strange-and-mystical Aegis. You might get the ability to sing a song that controls the weather, or early access to the keyword-based magic system.
Regardless of which you choose, it feels like you’re reaching into a grab bag of Red Giant’s influences and pulling out the silhouette of a legendary character. It ditches the vagueness present in a lot of modern, anime-inspired games and trades it in for specificity. And in that specificity, the world blooms.
Afterward comes my favorite section of the text: the Exchanges. These are bite-sized special traits, like feats or class abilities, that you can choose from. Each one framed as something you can just do. Without rolling! Or any other outside influence on your success! However, each one has its titular exchange. Trading abilities for health, sanity, or spirit. Some limit your exposure to daylight. One turns you into Guts Berserk himself in the fatal heat of combat.
I’m jealous of the Exchanges. I wish I wrote them. It’s a Good Idea. It is the answer to the premise the game promises you. Crafting a strange, devilish world through mechanics. Even if the first few pages tell me what an RPG is and how to roleplay and what Red Giant is, the character creation alone backs it up. It walks the walk where the intro talks the talk.
I can’t continue to only praise the game though. There are several Exchanges where their mechanical ties are weaker or missing entirely. These are easy fixes but still fixes that hold a good idea back from being perfectly executed. The character advancement feels tacked on, and the text even suggests tossing it out the window, which, if that’s the case, then it should have been tossed out the window and not left in the book.
There are several moments where the text struggles with strong language and opts for weak sentences that mosey around ideas instead of making definitive statements. The advantage and disadvantage mechanics feel like a vestigial limb, added simply because the same thing worked in other games. And over all, the rest of the mechanics outside the character creation feel like cobbled together bits from other OSR-adjacent games the writer liked. Which, if that’s the worst thing I can say? Then you’re doing a helluva job. We are a tapestry of our influences.
Tumblr media
I need to take a moment to give a nod to the game’s use of Sanity too. It suggests you “roleplay the effects” of your depleting Sanity, but it doesn’t specify negative consequences. And in that there’s a cartoonish respect. In other games that try to use Sanity as a measure for horror, you’re often confronted with ableist language and outright disgusting mockery. But Red Giant uses it as another health pool that depletes dramatically as you face Horrors and replenishes slowly afterward. Despite any negative connotations in labeling it “Sanity”, I’m willing to forgive it for the sake of atmosphere when it doesn’t turn its nose down at me.
If you’re picking this game up, you’d be able to run it tonight. It comes with two adventures (called Scenarios) that are at least serviceable, though I would love to see a more fleshed out version of a Red Giant adventure. A Castlevania-esque dungeon crawl, perhaps. And the book boasts plenty of wonderfully horrific monsters for you to pluck out and throw at your weird, little adventurers.
Overall, Red Giant is a good example of what one writer and a very small team can do. Rookie Jet Studio funded this as their second project on kickstarter, raising thirty-thousand dollars. To its benefit, it seems like the book deserved it, and maybe even more.
You can find Red Giant here.
To support writing like this, there’s my patreon or my substack (where you’re reading this). I’m on bluesky as well, for less-words and more-posts.

"Explorers! A PMD RPG": What To Expect - Post 2
Character Creation Part 2 - Stats, Skills and Levelling
Tumblr media
So, you can pick any Pokémon. Now what? Well, it's time to start truly making this character your own. Stats, and the level system, have been untethered from Pokémon species. At the start of the game, your Stats are all 5, and you'll get 30 Stat Points to assign to your Stats, excluding HP. For balance reasons, I wanted the HP stat to come off your Class. There are a few ways to increase it via Items and Rare Qualities, but I digress. At each Level, your Stats will increase by 5, and you'll gain another 30-point budget to assign. Natures have no bearing on your Stats either.
NOTE: There are 10 total Class Levels in "Explorers! A PMD RPG". They represent your competency and strength of your chosen Class. We'll talk more about Classes next time.
I wanted players to choose how their Pokémon's stats are arrayed -- and I'm happy I stuck with the decision. People who want to stay true to a Pokémon's design can do so by emulating a similar stat distribution as in the main games. But what I really wanted was for those who felt their favourites or their chosen Pokémon to still feel as powerful and effective as the rest of the team. Because, let's be honest, not all Pokémon are made equal. But players shouldn't feel punished for their choices. So, make your Pokémon your way!
Tumblr media
Furthermore, I introduced a new stat: IQ. It will govern the majority (but not all!) of the Skills in the game, but often has very few uses in Battle. Those who invest in their IQ stat will find their characters excelling in the social and/or exploration aspects of the game, but have less battle prowess than they otherwise could have.
NOTE: IQ is a homage to the PMD games and has no connection or connotation with the disproven "intelligence metric" in the real-world. There is an expanded note on this in the full PDF.
The IQ Skills are split into 3 distinct subcategories: Social, Exploration, and Intellect.
Social contains the Influence, Deceive and Intuition Skills.
Exploration contains the Tracking, Ecology and Sneak Skills. And
Intellect contains the Memory, Logic and Traps Skills.
The final skill subcategory is the "Stat" Skills. HP has Endurance, ATK has Strength, DEF has Phys. Status Resistance, SP.ATK has Awareness, SP.DEF has Sp. Status Resistance, and Speed has Movement.
Character Creation Part 3 - Moves
Tumblr media
Moves were a big head-scratcher, and took several iterations to get right. At first, I made dedicated movelists for each Class... But then that ended up feeling extremely restrictive. I then briefly considered Movelists based on Type, but that too felt too restrictive.
Eventually, I settled on open Movelists. You can learn practically any Move. Level is your only gatekeeper here (That's right folks, you can have a Bidoof with Roar of Time by the end of a campaign. Truly, as Arceus intended).
At key Levels, you'll be able to gain access to a new Movelist to choose from in addition to your current, and these new Moves will increase in power.
You still only have 4 Moves available to you, of course, but at each Level, you can learn a new Move from the open Movelist. You can also learn a Move from a Move Tutor (your GM will probably have one for you in your local Town), or you might even be able to find TMs that can teach you a Move of a level that you currently can't learn from! In this way, TMs act as rare rewards for players that can increase their power level, much like how magic items can in more well-known fantasy TTRPGs...
And, of course, the game features Pokémon move staples such as STAB and Type Effectiveness (wouldn't be Pokémon without 'em, after all)!
Character Creation Part 3.5: A Word on Physical and Special Moves
Physical Moves in "Explorers! A PMD RPG" tend to have higher power than Special Moves, but have little range, so you'll need to get in close -- and be more at risk of taking damage. There's a great risk-reward factor in that. Special Moves, on the other hand, have slightly less offensive power, but compensate by having higher range, allowing you to KO foes from a distance.
Finally, a unique mechanic implemented into this game is a Physical/Special Split for Status Moves. During early designs and in playtests, Status Moves coming off of one Stat, or none, gave too much or too little weight. So, I took upon myself the strange (and I'll be honest, a little arbitrary) re-categorisation of all Status Moves in the game into Physical Status, and Special Status. Moves that come from these pools will come off their respective Stat to inflict, and subsequently their respective defensive stats for attempting to resist or end the effects. This felt the most balanced and allows Attack, Defence, Special Attack and Special Defence to enjoy equal weight with each other...
...That's all for this time! Next post, we'll be talking about Classes, as well as "What the heck is a Dicepool system?"

The parallels between Kaveh and his mother and what this implies for Kaveh and Alhaitham
(This is an excerpt taken from my Haikaveh essay! If you're interested you can check it out here or as a pdf <3)
When discussing Kaveh’s mother, Faranak, with her old teacher Zaha Hadi in order to discover the password that will unlock Faranak’s journal, “companionship” is given as the password over “understanding”. This is due to Faranak placing more value in the companionship of Kaveh’s father over him understanding her artistry, as despite his lack of understanding, he stayed at her side regardless in order to “support” her. Zaha Hadi states that Kaveh’s father’s support was likely the reason that Faranak chose him over her “many admirers”, which Kaveh then equates to “companionship”:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A romantic connotation is created by the association of “companionship” with the relationship between Kaveh’s mother and father. Although companionship is also assigned to a platonic connection, pictured in Faranak’s journal of the gathering consisting of Tighnari’s parents, Alhaitham’s parents, and Cyno’s adoptive father. Her advice to Kaveh of pursuing companionship, too, falls in the platonic category, as she states for him to: “seek a friend” in order to gain support. Companionship, then, becomes dually used for romantic and platonic connections.
Tumblr media
It is interesting then, that Faranak herself can be used as an allusion to Kaveh. This is emanated in how the two share many similarities, not only in physical attributes, their studying in Kshahrewar, and their shared profession as an architect, but also in their mannerisms and their method of working.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just as Faranak keeps a diary, Kaveh writes in an ‘Old Sketchbook’. Faranak is described as a “perfectionist” who insisted on redesigning drafts, just as Kaveh designs six drafts for a singular client.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She is also described to have a “sensitive and vulnerable heart”, just as Kaveh is described to be “sensitive” due to his empathetic nature.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just like Kaveh, she is said to have gotten into a “heated argument” with a friend, presumably over conflicting viewpoints on art. As an artist, her woes are that of Kaveh’s, stemming from being misunderstood by others.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As she is directly compared with Kaveh and as their similarities are listed, it can be inferred that the two are to be paralleled due to their resemblance. It is relevant then to look to her view of her relationship with Kaveh’s father as it provides a perspective of an ideal companion for a struggling artist:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is interesting in regard to the relationship presented here to that which exists between Kaveh and Alhaitham.
Kaveh and Alhaitham have a mutually deep understanding of each other, which creates a sense of intimacy that they share with no other character. Additionally, Kaveh has the similar struggle of being eclipsed by a “dream” in his heart, as in, his ideals conflicting with his own self-interest. Kaveh’s father, rather than understanding Kaveh's mother's ideals in relation to himself, seeks to support her, “listen[ing] to her joys and share[ing] in her sorrows”. This is a similar statement to Alhaitham’s “listen[ing] intently” to Kaveh’s troubles when meeting in a tavern, calling to question Kaveh’s pursuit of his ideals: “How has realising your ideals gone for you?”
Tumblr media
Where Faranak writes of meeting her future husband for the first time, Kaveh’s meeting Alhaitham is recorded in a similar instance:
Tumblr media
When comparing Faranak’s first impression of her future husband with that of Kaveh’s impression upon first meeting Alhaitham, the two are dissimilar. Kaveh notes that it is rare to meet someone of his intellect, and therefore appears to treasure the bond, whereas Faranak is seemingly indifferent to Kaveh’s father, but he appears to grow on her. In regard to Kaveh and Alhaitham’s relationship history as a whole, however, similarities can be noted.
Where Kaveh and Alhaitham fell out due to differing viewpoints and their inability to effectively communicate, Kaveh can be seen to not “think much” of Alhaitham’s perspective. When the two meet again in the future, this perception of Kaveh’s has the potential to become applicable only to a “younger [Kaveh]”, as Alhaitham is the only person whom he has formed an “intimate bond” with. Although Alhaitham will not be able to understand him in terms of empathy, Alhaitham can provide companionship, just as Kaveh’s father did for Faranak, which in turn, caused their relationship to develop into that of an “intimate bond”.
A parallel can be drawn between the bond Kaveh’s mother and father had, and the bond between Kaveh and Alhaitham. As although Alhaitham cannot understand Kaveh’s artistic struggles and his personal struggles of empathy, he supports Kaveh in trying to alleviate Kaveh’s suffering and his willingness to listen.
As Kaveh’s mother specifically highlights that it is not understanding which will help Kaveh, it is companionship, which draws strong links to the identified message in A Parade of Providence. As Alhaitham states that he knows that Kaveh will never understand Alhaitham’s way of thinking in regard to his own ideals, but that their relationship is not based upon who is right or wrong. A more in-depth analysis regarding this can be found here.
Tumblr media
Alhaitham and Kaveh cannot understand each other in the sense that they can properly empathise and relate with each other’s way of thinking, but they can support one another in the progression of self, and ultimately be a constant source of support for the other. This is demonstrated in the elaboration of the bond between Kaveh’s mother and father, and the parallels drawn between Kaveh and his mother. Companionship is a solution for Kaveh’s mother just as it is for Kaveh.
This can be seen in Faranak’s drawing of a gathering and the picture obtained at Kaveh’s Hangout ending, ‘Leisurely Gathering’. The player is prompted to draw parallels between the people in the picture and the characters the player has met:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The photo shown parallels the ‘Leisurely Gathering’ ending route picture, as Kaveh is positioned where his father sat, and Tighnari, Alhaitham, and Cyno placed in accordance to where their fathers are placed. Rather than being turned away from Alhaitham, like Kaveh’s father is to Alhaitham’s father in the drawing, Kaveh and Alhaitham are centre frame, and their focus is on each other. Companionship then, whilst being this particular group of friends, particularly refers to that of the bond between Kaveh and Alhaitham. The dual meaning assigned to “companionship” means that both a romantic and platonic interpretation has been generated to apply here - another example of methods used to queercode Kaveh and Alhaitham's relationship.

HOW I PERSONALLY ORGANIZE MY DIGITAL ZINE MASTERCOPIES!
Hey zineovators, hello every'all. I am here to note down how I (PERSONALLY) fix around and assign my digitally-made zine mastercopies for easy access. This isn't meant to be a guide and it surely isn't the "correct" way to file zines, nor is this necessary, it might even be redundant for a lot of people, but this is just the way I do it. I have some really crappy guides throughout my yap session, BUT I will provide a REAL example using my own zine at the end! anyhow, let us begin! WHY DO I BOTHER?
because it makes my personal zine creation process more manageable
organization makes it less daunting for me to actually go through with the creation process
It tickles my fish brain to file and sort things, and it makes me happy to do so
so yeah, it all boils down to personal preference. I like making my digital process cleaner and a bit more streamlined, but you really don't have to follow me or use me as a standard. I just do what I do best.
That aside... TERMS I COINED AND WILL BE USING AND EXPLAINING (LIST) (yes this is based off of A/B/O but also coding)
ALPHA Mastercopy (A-Copy, Alpha copy)
BETA Mastercopy (B-Copy, Beta Copy, Physical Mastercopy)
OMEGA Mastercopy (O-Copy, Omega Copy, Assembled Mastercopy)
PRELIMINARIES!
A master copy in my own words is the original mother version of your zine that you can use to duplicate or create more copies for distribution purposes. You usually do not give a master copy away especially if you plan to make more prints of a specific zine design in the future! Also, I'm using the classic 8-page mini-zine format as an example here because...I specialize in mini-zines, lol. With that in mind, here is the portion you are waiting for.
ALPHA MASTER COPY (i.e.. RAW DIGITAL FILE)
Tumblr media
The Alpha copy is the version of your zine that you made/scanned into a digital format. Typically I would use a PDF along with the zine design that I pre-formatted for this due to the clarity and easy access of PDF files. I avoid .png or .jpg because flattening my zine files tends to crush the text quality, by a LOT.
The Alpha copy doesn't have to just be the formatted version already. It can be individual panels, single pages, artwork or scanned pages, etc. That's also an alpha copy, but in its own way. The version I'm talking above is print-ready copy that is already prepared.
Tumblr media
^ THIS counts as an alpha copy as well.
Now down below is an example of my own alpha copy in PDF format, featuring my DAVID SYLVIAN zine (I'll try to upload it on an archive soon, it will be completely free! Pls tell me in advance if you'd like to reproduce and distribute it irl since I dont want to get sued </3)
Tumblr media
btw the tagline "be seen, make a zine" was taken from brattyxbre on YouTube. I would gladly recommend her for zine resources, discussions and zine-related topics, especially if you are a beginner!
BETA MASTER COPY (i.e.. PRINTED TEMPLATE)
Tumblr media
Your Beta copy is a version of your zine that is printed on paper with the proper formatting for folding/cutting already. The only difference with this version and omega copy is, well, you DON'T fold or cut this copy.
The primary purpose of a B-Copy is to check:
print quality (text visibility, color vibrance, ink bleeding, etc.)
graphic size and an overview of your zine's general physical appearance.
And the other, marginally vital role of your B-Copy is to serve as:
the physical print that you can use for XEROX (photocopying) or other copying services and tools
scannable output that you can scan/copy for distribution, especially if the person who wants your zine would like to assemble it themselves, if you do not have a final version of your zine on hand to share, or you yourself do not have your A-Copy for reproduction.
A printed copy that you can catalogue or archive, especially if you are the sort of person who retires zines, or are just deeply sentimental (like me, lol!).
Down below is the B-Copy of my example zine. Ignore the fact that this is literally my omega copy that I just dismantled because I don't have my Beta in hand lol. But approximately this is how it looks like.
Tumblr media
I personally store B-copies (alongside O-copies) inside a dedicated clearbook or binder to safeguard against weathering or chemical ink deterioration, alongside some information and stuff about the zine itself. This is useful especially if you want to showcase zines and zine content to others, apart from safekeeping purposes.
I might make another longform infodump about digital and physical zine storage and archiving processes (because as an aspiring librarian I feel it is my duty to rant about that) but that will be for another time.
OMEGA MASTER COPY (i.e., FINAL EXAMPLE PRINT)
Tumblr media
Okay this is kind-of self explanatory, but I will elaborate regardless.
If you are the sort of person who handcrafts zines (aka make, draw, write or assemble them traditionally) you likely know what the O-Copy is, because your original finished zine is what I am referring to as the Omega copy. That is, the ACTUAL "Master Copy" itself.
Omega Master Copy is what most zinesters and zine creators refer to as just the master copy. But seeing from this post, you KNOW I had to make it fancier (read: unnecessarily complicated)
The Omega copy serves as your first official print, and you can use this version to store or show around. The only difference is, if you end up using my organizing format (good luck!), you'll end up using the O-Copy more as a finished product display to show how it looks when finished as an assembled copy, and the B-Copy as the actual thing you use to reproduce or duplicate your zines for distribution.
Here is the example of my O-copy for my example zine. (again you will be able to access this through an archive soon, maybe I will announce it later on or just post about where I store them digitally.)
Tumblr media
I used the software development jargon ALPHA, BETA & OMEGA because it kind of fits(?) lol. I am not a coding aficionado but I know loosely enough to utilize the words. But also, live laugh omegaverse. hopefully this helps(?) but also if you reached to this point, hi. I'm glad you indulged in my little rant. EDIT: here's the Internet Archive Link for the specific zine featured in this post! Have fun! Communicate, create, zineovate! Until next time.

how to build a chair........... director's cut ∠( ᐛ 」∠)__ this is about to be a very long very self-indulgent post where i just talk about my own writing. i also doodled on all the pages i think it makes the whole thing more fun to go thru. welcome to my ted talk
Tumblr media
SIKE before i begin. credit where credit is due, this post was the start of it all. it changed my brain chemistry my jaw was dropped i was in awe i was obsessed and before i even finished it i knew that i would eventually have to make something similar for the commander or else i would be cursed to think about it for the rest of my life. and i Was cursed for like two years every day i would just be like........ is today the day i sit down and draft the commander chair fic of my dreams....... maybe tomorrow......
and then i got accepted as a writer for the gw2 zine ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ the chair idea was actually my backup option in case my first idea didn't pan out, and thank god it didn't, bc this one worked so much better. (still working on my initial idea, just turning it into a full fic! it was wayyy too long to be a zine submission.)
this is the chair i used. i downloaded the assembly instructions and tried out a bunch of different free pdf editors until i found one i liked, which ended up being sedja. if anyone's interested in doing something like this, i recommend printing out the pdf and writing directly on it! it was a lot easier for me to just figure out everything on paper first and then digitalize it after :P here's a picture of my physical copy
Tumblr media
okay actually getting into it for real this time !!!!!
1. yeah i could've just erased the ikea logo and left a blank space but then i realized i could turn it into an in-universe joke. and then i ran with it.
Tumblr media
2. i ripped this straight from the product description on the website. thanks ikea
Tumblr media
3. i'm not sure if anyone went and looked it up, but it's a real item code!
Tumblr media
hehe :3c
Tumblr media
4. if your commander willingly goes to therapy i'm happy for them but TO ME? you'd have to drag the commander kicking and screaming. it's not that they don't know that something is wrong with them, they know, and they know YOU know. you're just never supposed to talk about it. they don't look at their own psych eval results bc that's none of their business.
Tumblr media
5. i normally avoid specifying the commander's race when i write them bc i enjoy the challenge, but for the zine i was assigned to write about a norn commander! as a human main i was uhhhh very ill-equipped. but that just meant i had to study up on my norn lore (•̀ᴗ•́)و i spent hours on the wiki, then went around interviewing norn mains for their opinions, which was great fun :D it all helped me narrow the focus of my piece: joining the war on commander objectification on the side of commander objectification (ㅅ´ ˘ `)♡ and no one self-aggrandizes quite like the norn commander!
and to balance that i knew my narrator had to be patronizing as shitttt. they've clearly been following the commander since the beginning and seem to know a lot of intimate details about their life, despite not thinking very highly of them. wonder who that could be :3c
Tumblr media
6. i can't stop making references. so the original part number is actually #122620 in the manual but i've changed it here (and on the previous page!) to #082812, as in 08/28/12, the date gw2 was released! no real reason for it, @dalennaugw suggested it for funsies and i liked it. if you're my pal and i show you a wip and you have a cool idea for it, chances are i Will put that shit in. hi dale if you're reading this
Tumblr media
7. another thing about me. i loveeee repetition. here the word "over" is repeated four times to match the picture. honestly a lot of the creative process for this piece was just staring at the pages and figuring out how to tie the pictures to the commander in ways that weren't extremely corny or trite. idk why i enjoy writing like this when i could be frolicking in the beautiful prosaic meadows of a word doc instead but. it's like i see a tiny little restrictive box and i'm like OH BOY can't wait to think inside of that thing!!! i like when the format matters just as much as the content and in some cases informs the content. am i making any sense here. well all you need to know is that i'm a virgo and my favorite book is house of leaves
Tumblr media
7. aw fuck just realized i wrote 7 twice. whatever i'm not changing it this is 7 part two now. the theme of my piece is glory, what it means to the norn commander, and how far they're willing to go for it.
Tumblr media
8. does norn culture place emphasis on seeking individual glory Yes are norn also very community-oriented Also Yes. i think it's common to see norn kids napping together in a big pile, usually after they've worn themselves out playing games outside. it makes sense practically (apes together warm) and socially (pack bonding good) but that's just my hc. growing up i used to share a bed with my cousins all the time so it's normal to me.
a young, naive not-yet-commander, with no real combat experience, has no point of reference to compare a "blaze of glory" to. but the way everyone talks about it, it must be a good thing. a wonderful thing. a reward fit for a life well-fought and a legend hard-earned. so they imagine it must feel like falling asleep surrounded by the people they love, who love them in turn.
Tumblr media
9. .........i was playing a lot of ace attorney when i wrote this page. i wish i was joking 👍🏼
Tumblr media
10. ohhh shit the truth come OUT this whole chair thing was all a ploy just so i could write about the departing. again.
Tumblr media
will i ever stop thinking about her. reply hazy, try again later.
11. out of all the pages, this one has the most emphasis on text placement, like comparing the enlarged picture of the screw to a sword, the numbers counting the screws, and "up up up" being arranged to mimic a wisp of smoke.
i also wanted to lean into the viking/norse mythology influences with my word choice.
Tumblr media
12. more nods to norn culture. i didn't know they referred to the six human gods as "spirits of action" until i was doing the research for this piece :O
and the domain of the lost is called a hall of ghosts....... cause valhalla.....
13.
Tumblr media
i'm sorry this so funnyyy. SAYS the guy who literally clawed their way back to life for a rematch.
me when i'm in a sore loser competition and my opponent is the COMMANDER!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
14. arms as in "limbs" and also arms as in "armaments" :•]
15. haha get it because the picture makes it look like there are two mirrored speech bubbles while the text paints two opposing interpretations of the norn commander. one that's selfless and humble versus one that's selfish and vainglorious.
16. and the best part is IT DOESN'T MATTER which one is true bc at the end of the day no matter what their motivation, balthazar is dead by their hand. ofc i'm of the opinion that the most compelling interpretation of the commander is both, simultaneously. contradictions are good for the soul.
Tumblr media
17. i could've name-dropped kas, the only person present that would do something like that, but i felt it was better to leave it ambiguous.
18. low-hanging fruit. the metaphor was so obvious here but i had to do it. for the culture
19. the alternate title for this piece was "THIS COULD BE GLORY". "how to build a chair" was only supposed to be a placeholder title til i figured out a better one, but the innocuousness of it grew on me. also i came up with the other one too late and had already advertised under the chair title lol
Tumblr media
20. my first instinct was to end it with something more reassuring, like "what you have built so far is enough" but that would've been an ooc switch-up for a narrator who has been nothing but snide and detached this whole time. gotta stick to my guns
21.
Tumblr media
obligatory chair joke as the last line. for realsies though it’s meant to be an earnest appeal to the commander to take a break, to have a seat, but it’s also a challenge. are they willing to lean on their friends? are the bonds they’ve forged strong enough to hold their weight? are they willing to put their faith in someone else’s hands? are they brave enough to try? well. only one way to find out.
also guess what that wasn’t even the real last page of the manual. it's THIS
Tumblr media
but no way i was letting this be the image we ended on. IT LOOKS LIKE A DICK AND BALLS!!!
and on that note, THANK YOU if you made it this far!! a very special shout-out to @hawkepockets, my lovely boyfriend and beta reader, without whom this piece would not be nearly as polished. i would bring him pages to look over and he would say Scrap half of those lines you can do better than that. kill your darlings. i would complain and argue for a few minutes then we would revise. rinse and repeat until we had honed this thing to perfection. i can't stress enough the importance of having a second pair of eyes on your work throughout your creative process, even better if it's someone who challenges you. i don't even pay him 🫶🏼
and if there was anything i didn't cover that you still have questions about, please feel free to shoot me an ask! (ㅅ´ ˘ `)♡ thanks for reading! see u later dudes ;P

Production Update
Hello everyone! It's time for a production update on Finding Home: A Chiss Ascendancy Zine!
The Zine: The zine itself is ALMOST ready to order our sample for quality control. It's laid out (we're using InDesign), all text has been checked and edited for consistency in formatting across the project, and all final art pieces are in and assigned their places. The last thing we are currently waiting on are page templates for the text pages, but those should be done soon! Once we order the sample and are happy with how the zine looks in said sample, full production will be ordered.
The Merch: Digital merch is all complete and some of the physical merch has been ordered (and even delivered!). Bookmarks are in as are the "Visit Csilla" postcards as well as some of the 4x6 prints.
The 'Making of' PDF: Is in it's final stages. All participating artists have had their designs submitted and laid out. Participating authors have submitted their pieces and will be added to the PDF this week.
Once we have the zine sample in-hand (and approved by the mods), we'll come back with a solid update on dates, but that shouldn't be too much longer. STAY TUNED!!

Writing a "Perfectionist" Character
Tumblr media
Perfectionism
The tendency to demand of others or of oneself an extremely high or even flawless level of performance, in excess of what is required by the situation.
It is associated with depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and other mental health problems.
Traits & Symptoms of Perfectionists
While there are several ways to define and describe perfectionism, most theories identify the following 3 features (or traits) of perfectionists (Antony & Swinson, 2009):
Adopting standards that are extremely difficult or impossible to meet.
Setting expectations so high that they damage, rather than enhance, their performance.
The presence other mental health problems, including depression and anxiety.
Symptoms of Perfectionism
Unreasonably high standards and expectations can be harmful throughout our lives, damaging enjoyment and performance and preventing engagement across many situations, including (Antony & Swinson, 2009):
Career and educational performance. Perfectionists at work and in school settings often set overly strict standards for themselves and others, leading to too much time measuring and assessing, and resulting in delays and missed deadlines. Perfectionist managers may become angry when an employee arrives late, even when they complete extra hours later in the day. Students who set themselves too high standards may feel depressed unless they are at the top of the class.
Neatness and aesthetics. Extreme neatness and cleaning may leave perfectionists with little time for other activities or may hold them back from beginning an activity if it may leave a mess. An excessive tidiness focus can lead to upset and disagreement at home and outside.
Organization. As with neatness, if things are left disorganized or not set out in a particular way, perfectionists may experience anxiety or react angrily. They may spend hours planning and making lists, yet still failing to engage in the task.
Writing. Sending emails, filling in forms, completing assignments, and even writing in a card may be delayed due to fear of making mistakes, making the process of writing tortuous.
Self-consciousness in speaking. Perfectionists may be overly self-conscious regarding what they say and how they say it, and may be unduly concerned with incorrectly pronouncing words.
Physical appearance. People with perfectionist standards can set impossibly high standards regarding their hair, clothes, weight, and body image. Individuals may be late for work, prioritizing their time on finding the perfect outfit.
Cleanliness. Perfectionist behavior may focus too much on health and wellbeing. Health-obsessed individuals may be concerned about touching anything or eating something they haven’t prepared, and frequently visit the doctor.
Ultimately, for people with impossibly high standards, only the impeccable can be accepted. Failing to reach this level can be so devastating it may not be worth trying to succeed at all (New Scientist, 2019).

QnA for Volume 2
Are there any requirements for signing up as an artist?
Basic requirements are ability to create a full piece with colored background, no AI art, and all contributors must be above the age of 16
If acrylic key charms are selected fir merch, will contributors be allowed to design them?
Merch contributors will be allowed to create merch, while page artists will be limited to only creating art for the physical zine
Could a vol1 reprint be a possibility?
No, a Volume 1 print at this time will not be possible. It started as a PDF zine and has remained one ever since. In the future we may print it for a charity, but currently it will stay as a PDF.
How many artists will be allowed to participate?
We are looking at 25 page artists currently, with 5-7 merch artists. The merch will have a first come first serve policy on what type of merch people can create
Will artists filling out an application have to have previous work specifically of rescue bots, or is general tf artwork ok
General Transformers art is acceptable, however we would love to see your Rescue Bots art as well
What is the deadline for submission?
Deadline for pieces will be September 20th
Hypothetically if there were physical copies, could this ship internationally?
Yes! There will be extra costs for shipping, but we are planning on international shipping
Is there currently a date being planned for when applications would open?
April 8th
If there are a lot of people doing art/fics for certain characters, will there be a 'cutoff' of sorts so that way more content will be created to focus on other characters?
We may explore this possibility, as during your application you will give us 3 different pitch ideas. We will from there assign those to the accepted artists so that we can plan on having a wide arrange of characters
Do all art/fics have to include all characters and if not, is there a minimum for how many should be included?"
You are allowed to choose as many characters as you like for submissions. Whether it is 1 character or all, that is up to you
What's the likelihood of this zine becoming something?
Very likely! We will be ordering zines and merch based off of preorders, which will happen during the production period from August to December. We do not have a set date as we will need to get pricing and the shop set up, but we will announce those dates as we get closer to the preorder dates

Surprising Find! The (Old) Marvel TTRPG Is Pretty Dang Good!
The 2003 Marvel Universe Roleplaying Game* is written with a weird and menacing tone. It threatens 72 hours of consecutive roleplaying. It expects you'll play it as a pvp skirmish game. Half of the book is just statted out Marvel characters that it thinks you'll play instead of an OC.
And it's still somehow an incredible rpg.
To be clear, I have played and enjoyed other superhero rpgs. A lot of the big ones try to give you the freedom to pick whatever powers you want, and they do this by being very numbersy---which is fun, but they run a little slow every time those numbers get involved.
Marvel Universe dodges this problem by having you collect rocks.
Your character in Marvel Universe is a pool of stones that you can assign to different actions. You can even spam rocks on a bunch of actions at once---trying to stop the train and conceal your secret identity and ask that guy to prom---but you're usually able to spend them faster than they regenerate, so going big and loud and heroic in one scene usually means you're recuperating in the next.
There also aren't any random elements here. The effect of your action is purely equal to the rocks you spend. No dice. No cards.
And despite this, you still feel like you're pushing against something when you take action.
It's a bafflingly elegant design, and I think could work just as easily for settings like Werewolf or Exalted.
Now, the bad news is that, to my knowledge, no one is currently publishing this game. There's some used copies floating around ebay and the like, but there does not (as of 9/7/23 and according to my limited research) appear to be a rights holder actually selling pdfs or physical books. As best I can tell, it's abandonware.
So in order to get a copy a person would have to do something like google the name of the game and see if a pdf was being hosted anywhere---a transgression against social order that I could never personally condone. Still, if you do manage to find a Legitimate Copy, it's a cool read.
And who knows? This strange rock-hoarding game could become your favorite superhero rpg too.
*There is also a Marvel *Multiverse* Roleplaying Game which was published much more recently, but it's completely different and does not involve building little cairns on your character sheet.

Interest Check!
Have you ever wondered what types of ‘paperwork’ Papas and Cardinals are always doing in fics? Or what kind of homework do siblings receive during classes taught by the clergy?
Well now is your chance to create your take on those assignments.
Whether it's an academic-style paper for Secondo’s History of the Ministry, a piece of art for Primo’s Drawing 101 class, or a condition report of a ministry relic, it can be submitted here. Terzo’s poetry or photography classes can also submit their works.
Your work is important regardless of your role as a sibling in the ministry. Here we can showcase all your hard work.
Don’t have a ‘research’ topic that comes to mind? No worries, we can have a brainstorming session to point you in the right direction.
“What if I don’t want to work on this alone?” I’m sure some others feel the same way and will be eager to connect over mutual topics.
Don’t you think you can commit to a full research-style piece of writing? We will accept ‘write-ins’ debating a made-up ‘previous’ article. Or even a short incident report that describes encounters or conflicts between siblings and ghouls.
If it feels like something that might come across a Papa’s desk, then it is welcome.
More info under the cut:
Theme:
The loose theme of this is academia. This should be a fun ministry lore-building exercise. You get to build a new perspective into the inner workings of the ministry. Not all of the views might match, do not worry, every ‘branch’ works a bit differently. After all, this is a ministry-wide collection of works.
These should be written from an ‘in-universe’ point of view. Meaning that these should feel like they come from a sibling/clergy member’s hand. The potential discussions about magic or ghouls are limitless.
(Because of the potential for Explicit content this will be an 18+ Zine.)
"Why the academic style?"
This comes from my urge to write an academic-style paper again. I miss doing visual analyses on pieces of art and think it might be interesting to attempt that with the different pieces of cannon art for Ghost (i.e. the stained glass backdrops, papal portraits, or even t-shirt art)
I also feel like Ghost fans love finding the hidden meanings of everything. This is a chance to fully compose those thoughts in a long-form piece of writing for others to enjoy. This means bringing in as many citations as you feel you need to completely defend your stance.
Format:
This will be compiled into a PDF for all participants to enjoy, share, or even print to have a physical copy.
This is so there is no money being exchanged and creators are able to do whatever else they wish with these pieces.
Potential items:
incident reports (can be written in 3rd or 1st person)
research papers
Clergy member or previous papal biographies
ministry wide memos
flyers/ads for clubs within the ministry or for ministry outreach.
Condition reports
art pieces
