So I'm taking this class called molecular driving forces and it's something like stat mech for chemistry and it blows my mind like every week. Today the professor asked us why heat flows from warm objects to cold objects and everyone was like entropy! Temperature! Equilibrium! and he was like yeah yeah but what's it really about when you get to the bottom of it? And the answer was statistics - because the number of states in which these two bodies are in a thermal equilibrium is much (like, much) greater than the number of states in which they aren't, and so thermal equilibrium is the most probable outcome. And the thing that decks me every time is that it's always statistics, it's all statistics.

So anyway, every week I'm like WHOA THIS IS WHY I CHOSE A SCIENCE DEGREE and if you're also a science student (or used to be one) please reblog and add your moments of awe at the beautiful complexity of our universe pretty please!! I want to read your stories! Science appreciation chain!!

Finals are over, so my first year of grad school is too! I'm still really anxious to hear back about my grades, but it'll be pretty easy to distract myself with all of the things I neglected to do when I was drowning in final assignments, studying, and anxiety (looking at you, giant pile of laundry).

Notes of the day: This log is from some days ago but I still think it’s worth posting it! I have done 2 of my 5 timed exams for this semester and I’m already feeling quite burned out from constant revision and stress. Both my Fluid Dynamics and Electromagnetism exams went strangely well and so I am not certain if I should consider that a good or a bad thing… I have a lot of emails I haven’t checked in regards to funding and research positions I’ll take during this summer, if all goes as planned I’ll be working during the entire summer but I’ll at least have 2 weeks of repose from this academic turbulence… we shall see… we shall see…

I have spent the last decade thinking I could not wait to do research and now that I’m researching for my master thesis let me tell you… this shit’s Not Fun

I love fiction/stories that have a physicist as a character. They're always super smart and put together. In real life we're dumbasses. None of us can do basic arithmetic in our head. No one in my research group has any idea what we're doing in life. We just like playing with magnets worth more than my parent's house and shooting little things at other little things

- Went to a meeting with a researcher to discuss possible projects

- Did some interview preparation

- Went to my Fluid Dynamics lecture and sent some emails to deal with future extracurricular events

Note of the day (finally good news!) : Got my results from last semester back and my average was of a 90%!! For the British system this is a high first class and I’m glad my work finally paid off! Got a 100% in one of my exams and I went to speak with the professor about one assignment where I was retracted 1 single mark for using European mathematical notation rather than the English one which ultimately cause my general grade to drop from 100% to 99%, so I requested him to see if it was possible to revise my grade for that single mark (which amounts to 0.3% of my total grade) to be given back, and he told me it was one of the weirdest request he had ever received but he would look into it! I’m happyish with my results though I think I could have done better in some aspects, now I must work even harder this semester to make sure I can maintain this average!
