Ok I don’t normally do this kind of thing on this blog but I don’t think it’ll show up anywhere otherwise, so:
Is this a thing outside Hawaii? I have no idea and I want to know!

"...Pineapple is tart, not sweet, which makes it good to pair with certain things. Although baking it can bring out its sweetness, when paired with the marinara sauce, the mozzarella cheese and pepperoni? Baked properly? It's a delicious sort of pizza that one can't get enough of."
Tumblr media
"Also, tomato is a fruit and yet it goes best with vegetables, can be cooked into sauces, made into a topping for hamburgers and is very versatile. If you don't like what's made, just.... don't eat it?"

These people take their potluck seriously
It's a bit excessive. Then again, they might have invented the Shame Cage specifically for Hop Pop, they hope it'll inspire him to get better at cooking. Alas, to no avail

No wonder he's making no progress
He's still making food from the hunger years

and erm pineapple juice is also good most of the time. had a smoothie thing or something once that fuckign sucked that had pineapple in it i think. pineapple mango i believe? fuck dairy queen for giving me water with slight not even good flavoring eugh
anyway sometimes it makes things taste gross though. like why but its also flavorful though so it gets a free pass. apparently its good with this one alcoholic drink you can mix but shhh its not like ive tried it i just drank the excess juice. and boom thats my opinion on pineapples summed up i think theyre pretty cool its awesome that you can buy them from your local grocery store

On a recent Bob's Burgers episode, the burger of the day involved quince. I've never eaten it, but it got my attention because I am a weirdo who likes putting fruit on stuff. I did some research, and it looks like it shows up in a lot of lamb dishes in a few countries, so OK, I guess it's gonna be a lamb burger. I like that sometimes. But then Dave told me he didn't remember what the burger was called, and neither did I. So I looked it up, and it was Everything Everywhere All at Quince, so now it's gonna be a lamb burger on an everything bagel?!? I'm still hashing out the details otherwise.

That's so valid! I think plenty of folks actually do have a strong aversion to pineapple in general, and perhaps specifically the combination of tastes/textures created when it's placed on pizza. Some people additionally are allergic to pineapple and don't realize it's not supposed to be physically uncomfortable to eat.
I think the question is more, why is pineapple the one we always seem to be hearing about? I know multiple people who straight up won't eat a pizza with onions on it, or mushrooms, sometimes green peppers, sometimes olives. These are all seen as incredibly "normal" pizza toppings, but the aversions are still present, and at least anecdotally, more numerous.
I remember being a kid and seeing all the kid media suggesting "Blech! Real kids all hate brocoli," and wondering, how did they land on that specific vegetable? Broccoli looks like little trees and tastes good with cheese. Why not the far inferior lima bean? Why not celery?
Why was there a bacon craze a decade ago? Why not sausage or ham? Why not beef jerky? It's interesting to think about this stuff.
So, why is pineapple the current point of pizza contention? I remember years ago anchovies were the topping one "had to" dismiss. Maybe in the future it will be something else. What shapes these positive or negative food trends?
According to The Economist:
In December 2009 a Facebook page named “Pineapple does NOT belong on PIZZA!” was launched. According to Know Your Meme, a database of internet culture, this page started the online chatter.
If that's the case, I wonder what seemingly arbitrary inciting event precipitated other trends. I remember tons of kids ordering hamburgers without pickles when previously they were pickle neutral, after a Burger King Kids Club commercial had a 90s cool kid ordering a burger "his way," with no pickles. I'm not sure if the Facebook group is a step up or a step down from that....
I refuse to believe anyone actually has a visceral reaction of disgust to pineapple on pizza. As far as “weird foods” go that’s one of the most tame examples and pineapple is probably the least offensive fruit to put in a savory dish. Pineapple antis are on some performative shit like the people who pretend to be really uncomfortable with the word “moist”

ok so this is actually a fascinating topic. pineapple on pizza is so divisive, i think, because it tends to take up a lot of space flavor profile wise and, on pizzas that already have a lot going on, tends to clash. there are certain genres of pizza, like proper chicago deep dish, that pineapple would be absolutely disgusting on. that stuff has enough Pizza Oomph just in its crust to make it an interesting dish with just cheese or cheese and sausage chunks. pineapple on that would at best be superfluous and at worst clash with the other ingredients and make for a subpar experience. lesser forms of pizza, however, such as california style flat crust, the kind of pizza that is so thin you have to fold it in half to get it to your mouth without it flopping over, is basically nothing on its own. it is entirely reliant on the toppings to give it flavor and make eating it worthwhile. if you go to a pizza place where a large is 35" in diameter and ask for nothing except sauce, cheese, and sausages, it will be incredibly plain and boring, and your friends will rightly label you a square. pineapple on such pizza is not only acceptable, but i would argue necessary to give the dish any flavor and any worthwhile qualities at all.
what i am trying to say is that pineapple chunks are the pizza equivalent of ketchup, and that people who say it has no place on steak and the people who say it has every place on hot dogs are both correct. it is unfortunate that despite our language having so many different words for various meats, the vast variety of culinary art forms that involve combining bread and tomato sauce are all simply lumped under the umbrella of "pizza", thus leading to much confusion
You must choose.

To the uninitiated to this hell discourse, imagine if the anti-pineapple faction accused everyone that didn't openly mock and bully people for liking pineapple pizza of, like, forcibly trying to shove pineapple pizza into the mouths of people with allergies. And also told us to kill ourselves for 'ruining pizza'.
Thats where we are at.
