I'm gonna admit; I'm burned out as hell art-wise from work I've been trying to force myself to do. Doubt I'll finish up any of that ArtFight stuff this month, but that's fine. compiling my headcanons for what video games dungeon meshi characters would like, if they were gamers in modern day

some taken from this post and my reblog additions there. added more characters, with some suggestions by friends/mutuals (marked by *asterisk ).

this can also be a games recommendation list based on your fav/most relatable characters too, if you want

characters that are not are included are bc i dont have ideas for them. if i only list the genre name but not any specific titles, its bc im not familiar enough with the character/genre to pick a specific game.

this list is, of course, biased towards games im more familiar with. feel free to ask me to elaborate on my choices or make suggestions in the comments

Laios' party:

Laios: plays lots of Monster Hunter. loves Spore but he doesnt often play past the tribal stage. likes Pokemon but he's more focused on catching the pokemon than following the story. played WolfQuest and DragonFable back in the day. enjoyed the concept of Bugsnax but wasn't interested in dealing with the NPCs

Marcille: mainly Dwarf Fortress, RTS games, some colony sims. but also sometimes The Sims, and dollmaker dress-up games. i could see her also enjoying Rollercoaster Tycoon and making elaborately-themed parks. might also occasionally indulge in some visual novels if she's in the mood for narrative she has Stardew Valley so she can have something to play co-op with falin, but its not a game she plays a lot of otherwise. when playing with falin, marcille micromanages the farm to maximize productivity, and does the decorations

Chilchuck: puzzle games and hidden object/escape room games as a video game-equivalent to finding/dismantling traps and lockpicking. i think he'd also enjoy Bejeweled.

Senshi: mainly Wii games and Cooking Mama. occasionally plays Snake on his 15-year-old nokia phone. i dont think he would enjoy games like Overcooked or restaurant manager games, because he likes to take his time making food, not stressing about customer service

Falin: some *Legend of Zelda games – she likes the exploration aspect in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, maybe also some of the toon zelda games like Minish Cap or Wind Waker she also plays Pokemon (*Pokemon Go when she's traveling), and i think she would enjoy some indie games, like Penko Park or Chicory: A Colorful Tale. plays Stardew Valley co-op with marcille – falin mainly takes care of the animals, mining, and picking the crops. occasionally makes improvement suggestions that marcille didnt think of

Izutsumi: i could see her enjoying games with parkour mechanics, like *Assassin's Creed, or Mirror's Edge. or maybe something simple but requiring cat-like swipes, like Fruit Ninja. despite her impatience, i think she could also enjoy action games with interesting longer narratives, as evidenced by [this omake] (relevant portion pictured below), so maybe *Final Fantasy 7 – my friend who's familiar with the game said "she’d find Cloud and Vincent relatable"

Kabru's party

Kabru: definitely Crusader Kings. maybe also some rpgs with relationship/faction mechanics, such as *Fire Emblem (one of the older ones or FE:3H) or Fallout: New Vegas (hes maxing out the speech stat asap) i think he would also enjoy mystery games like Pentiment and Return of the Obra Dinn – he would love the process of getting familiar with the many characters and deducing "who did what" in both games.

Rin: she takes pride in being an indie gamer (translating her disdain for upper class magic academy mages -> disdain for AAA games). given her chain-lightning magic in canon, i think she'd enjoy games with AOE-type magic, so maybe games such as Vampire Survivors. my mutual also suggested she might enjoy indie mystery visual novels like *Paranormasight, and that her AAA guilty-pleasure would be *Final Fantasy 14 – that rin is "a hardcore ff14 raider. would join PUGs and shot-call every week. #holm and diya might also play ff14 casually with rin but holm would be fishing mainly"

Mickbell: mainly Bethesda games like Fallout and Skyrim– enjoys the bootstrapper power fantasy in them. the type to go out of his way to pick up all the loot he can, to later sell

Kuro: enjoys the same games as Mickbell, but for the open-world exploration and investigation factors

Toshiro and Tansu's party:

Namari: her interest in fighting and weapons could translate to brawler/fighting games and action games with a focus on weapon stats – so maybe *Street Fighter, *God of War, and/or *Dark Souls. might play *Monster Hunter with laios but for the weapons. i could also see her occasionally enjoying truck simulators

Toshiro (Shuro): has the perseverance for soulslikes and other high-difficulty action and/or metroidvania games, but would take his time overthinking item/weapon synergies sometimes. given [his fondness for bugs], i could also see him enjoying Hollow Knight

Tade: would enjoy the cute aesthetics and lighthearted gameplay of Animal Crossing and Katamari. would also like idol anime rhythm games

Kiki: i think she would enjoy horror games such as Resident Evil, but would play it while super chill. i dont have much reasoning for this aside from vibes

Canaries:

Mithrun: plays Doom. got into Hollow Knight but still hasn't finished it because he keeps getting lost. senshi introduces him to Cooking Mama later on, which he finds surprisingly therapeutic

Cithis: plays Hitman and enjoys staging elaborate accident kills. i think she'd also enjoy The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood, with her background as a devious fortune-teller

Fleki: surreal indie games like Hylics. also plays Team Fortress 2, and is a scout main. occasionally joins lycion in Animal Jam

Lycion: active WolfQuest and Animal Jam player. occasionally joins fleki in tf2

Pattadol: plays Stardew Valley – shes comparatively a normie, but on the meticulous side. she would enjoy perfecting her in-game farm

Otta: plays Genshin Impact. the serious reasoning is because of her (earth) elemental magic and how genshin has an elemental magic system (from my understanding. ive never played it). the joke reasoning is how some genshin players play to collect "waifus", and how otta goes through a lot of women in her dating life

Other:

Leed: runs her own guild in World of Warcraft

Winged Lion: god-games like WorldBox or Simmiland. and Darkest Dungeon (this ones mostly a joke)

Thistle: plays the original Plants VS. Zombies. also plays Minecraft and is very serious about it, but hasn't updated his game in years (translating the fact hes a 1000-year-old kid frozen in time -> playing "slightly old" games popular in the early 2010s)

I considered giving Faust her blue eyes but for the sake of being matching besties with Yi Sang and to save me from scrolling through 50 different combinations of light blue, I didn’t.

ps the Yi Sang one is actually fairly old so yes there is a quality difference from Faust’s.

The Broken Mirror

So, Tumblr... I've been working on a Pokemon fangame called The Broken Mirror for the past little while. If you enjoyed the emphasis on exploring Nemona, Arven, and Penny's characters and unfinished arcs and hanging out with them every day that Ham's League Club aimed to have when the base postgame and DLCs of Scarlet and Violet pretty much didn't at all despite giving every indication they would... this is kinda like that, now coalescing into real game form. And I'm so excited to share it someday. (More info under the cut)

What pokemon do you think Orochimaru, Kabuto, and his team would be? 👀

I have a bit of a migraine and have been trying and failing to sleep for two hours and now have another fanfic idea based on this ask. So, answering this now rather than later.

I want to avoid giving either of them the obvious choices so going to avoid the ekans line and seviper.

So, for Orochimaru first since I have fewer thoughts on them. For the most part I think their team would swap around pretty often. They seem like the sort of person who'd just swap around pokemon on a whim, but here's a few I think they absolutely should have somewhere.

The first thing that came to mind was spiritomb because of how it's a collection of ghosts and that reminds me of Orochimaru's body transfer, it's also delightfully rare but not a legendary. I'd give them a rotating set of starter pokemon as well, just for the connection to wanting every jutsu and the starters being rare and varied in types and skillsets. Out of the legendary I vibe the most with giving them Giritina and Ithink Orochimaru should have a legendary. Getting Giritina while looking for Dialga or Palkia, much less Arceus seems like a very Orochimary-type plotline to me. It also has a snike-like form in its otherworldly state which suits them. I think they'd have the entire unknown alphabet in storage, and generally a very wide collection that's always being rotated around. They're the sort to get interested in anything unusual, I imagine their gameplay would be a lot like legends arceus for this, A lot of not exactly being in town but out in the wild cataloguing odd pokemon and happenings, unusual variations in size or aggression while making their own supplies.

As for what pokemon they'd turn into? I'd again say Giritina for a legendary, the cast off member of a trio who has to operate in a mirror world and changes form just suits them so well. If we're going by mystery dungeon logic though and it can't be legendary? I think dragonair for its serpent-like appearance, rarity, and shed skin ability. I feel like the ekans line is the more obvious answer and it's a bit of a shame giving Orochimaru a dragon over Kabuto, but I do like the mythical vibe and think it suits them.

Overall I think Orochimaru would originate from Sinnoh, it suits their vibe just too well for me to put them elsewhere, the focus on history while keeping an eye on the future, the locations from Sunyshore and its' technology and inventions to Celestic, Mt. Coronet as well. The mixture of these very modern cities with icy mountains that are treacherous to reach. I like the vibe.

Kabuto: If Orochimaru's pokemon are just wildly varied and always being swapped around, then I think Kabuto's should be more focused. Since spies don't seem to be as much a thing in pokemon in the same way, and I want to preserve his curiosity and need to learn, I think him having a team focused on capture and exploration makes the most sense.

So, for that, a golbat that hasn't evolved due to his treating his pokemon more as tools than friends. It gives him flight and some poison attacks that'd be useful for wearing things down. Joltik as well, it's smaller and found in caves, I imagine it could be useful as a light source, plus the electroweb for capturing or holding things still. I'd like to think he has a mismagius, a lot of its dex entries focus on hallucinations either of torment or joy, and while that suits Itachi well, Kabuto is also very proficient with genjutsu and the dex entries conflict about whether it brings joy or terror which suits Kabuto's being someone who heals enemies as quick as he hurts. Mismagius can learn a lot of tricky sorts of moves as well, which makes it suitable to turn around tricky situations depending on context. I would love to throw him a Kabuto too or at least some fossil pokemon due to his bringing things back from the dead and because I can't resist a pun. I could put cubone for the backstory similarities but I feel like that's a very obvious pick, but worth mentioning if I'm giving Kabuto a kabuto.

As for what pokemon he'd turn into? I really like the idea of zuroa. It's a transformation based pokemon that has a sort of center it can return to. A couple of its dex entries also refers to it turning into a silent child, as well as having a timid disposition, outright called cowardly. One even references this nature in connection to it transforming to look like other people, from the pokemon X entry "This Pokémon has a cowardly disposition, so when it's not around friends, it basically always stays transformed as something else." which just has a very 'kabuto' vibe to me. For sage Kabuto I'd say mimikyu though, something horrible and unsightly disguised in something more lovable and popular.

I think Kabuto would be from Unova. More vibes based than Orochimaru's. I don't think he's lived there very long though. I picture him as never really sticking around in one place long enough to get to know it.

Ok this is just in response to the "characters who want to die but get to live" and "character whose plans are an elaborate suicide" but regarding the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers reblogs those always get, I really don't get why Grovyle has the reputation on this site as the suicidal one and Celebi as the one who is very mentally healthy and willing to essentially die for noble non-suicidal reasons when it's really closer to the other way around. Grovyle has his whole motivation speech which makes it clear that he does think life is valuable and doesn't want to die but, knowing that devoting oneself to escaping death only works in the short run he'd rather focus on something even more valuable than that which has a deeper and more lasting meaning. Of course such motivation could be interpreted as hiding suicidality, any type of self-sacrificial mentality could, but he is literally saying something quite different. Meanwhile Celebi is the one with the line about how if they succeed they will be spared the agony of the future, which with the later context of what will happen if they succeed is very explicitly suicidal. But it feels like the fandom ignores their explicitly stated motivations in favor of focusing on their outward demeanors (Grovyle acts serious so he must be deeply miserable about life, Celebi acts more playful so she must be happy and mentally healthy and not putting up a front at all).

Also I just plain think it makes Grovyle and Dusknoir's dynamic more interesting if they mirror each other, where Dusknoir wants to bond with and help the Pokémon of the past and save their world but ultimately prioritizes his life, and Grovyle wants to live no matter how horrible the world is but ultimately prioritizes creating a more hopeful world, rather than just making it so Grovyle is lying to himself and is really just looking for an excuse to be erased from time.
