Powernap review

Someone linked me Powernap a few days ago and I binged it over the course of yesterday and today, and since it's rare enough to find webcomics that are completed and still freely available I figured I'd collect my thoughts on it.

From what I can tell it ran from 2011 to 2020, it's made by a pair of Mexican authors, and it's available in print for $40 or pdf for $10. The premise is that they invented a drug that takes away the need for sleep so everyone now works 16 hour days except for Drew, who's an office drone allergic to the drug and thus a bit of a second-class citizen. But the entire world giving up sleep is fucking up the balance of the oneiric plane somehow so Drew gets recruited to a squad of monster hunters to kill dream monsters in his sleep so that they don't cross over to the waking world.

The worldbuilding is pretty barebones, with nothing in the physical world being of particular importance. There are fully immersive 3D holographic advertisements that are just used to explain how monsters in the real world don't cause instant panic, and there are brain chips inserted by those Matrix-esque freaky organic robots that are just used to... actually I don't remember, but it doesn't really matter.

The tone is whimsical and irreverent throughout and the few deaths that happen aren't really taken seriously, so in that sense it's like a comedy although it never really made me laugh. There's a few jokes, but not many. The art style is very much suited to the physical comedy aspect, with exaggerated proportions during dynamic poses and such, but still not ha-ha funny. Very well executed though!

It accomplishes what it sets out to do with some good moments of tension and plenty of weird hallucinatory dreambeasts and some magic dream logic moments that I couldn't really wrap my head around. It's only about 230 pages total so it's perfect to read over the weekend. Plus it's got the traditional comic book layout rather than the all-panels-in-one-long-strip mobile-optimized webtoon thing that grinds my gears so much, so check it out!
