Continuing our own Machete order rewatch of Star Wars (Andor, Rogue One, IV, V, I, II, III, VI), my sister and I watched Empire Strikes Back and, yeah, it still holds up. Although, after the Battle of Hoth, there's not much Rebellion stuff in it. It's more focused on developing the main characters from the previous film. So, we see Luke's flaws while training with Yoda, Han and Leia's prickly romance, and, Vader ruthlessly choking any incompetent Imperial officer.

Interestingly, without its high command, we also get to see the Empire in its bare bones, just an old guy, his right hand and three ships filled with nervous space nazis. We finally meet the Emperor ("and his name is Palpatine!"), but he's not angry about his Death Star exploding, instead, he gleefully talks about making Luke to join him. This brings to mind a thought I had while watching Andor Season 2, inspired by Carro Rylanz saying the ISB was running a shadow government, not at all false. We do know Palpatine rules the Empire, but actually he doesn't care about the hows and whys, he just wants results (and more power). Of course, he's the big dictator, but, as we saw many times in Andor, all the oppression, racism, colonialism, torture, abuse, genocide, didn't just come from him. It came from the people that chose to do those things. All the moffs, generals, soldiers, etc, the Empire gave them a pass to be evil, and they accepted it.

I think it's important to acknowledge, like in any fascist regime, it's not just one person taking control of everything, they have followers. Like Syril, people that follow their Empire thinking it's righteous, but that somehow fail to see their crimes. Or Tarkin, who knows the Empire is evil and relishes on their acts of destruction.

And then there's Luke. He doesn't support the Empire, but learning Vader is his father, it's a huge blow to his identity. He realizes he's connected to the oppression of the galaxy, and even receives the offer to rule it with Vader. In despair, he lets himself go, choosing death (he doesn't die, but still).

Personally, it's always a bit wild to me to see commentators interact with the Hunger Games franchise as if Collins were writing science fiction stories instead of essays with faces. She's just not that interested in fleshing out side characters or digging into the details of the worldbuilding. These characters are concepts and symbols before they're people. There's an almost mathematical precision to who and what she explores and how deeply she does it. This is a step or two away from pure allegory. If she were writing a couple of centuries ago, she'd have named her characters things like Innocence and Anger and Watch-Carefully-Your-Soul-Lest-Ye-Be-Damned, but since she's writing for modern audiences, she has to settle for puns and allusions. If she has another essay to write, she'll assign some faces to it; she's not going to look into backstories or other eras just for the sake of storytelling, and it's not a failing as a writer that she doesn't.

Anakin works in sanitation at a marine research facility and falls in love with a captive mermaid. Obi-Wan is standoffish at first, but Anakin eventually gains his trusts and breaks him out! Obi-Wan doesn’t make it easy for him though.

I’ve always liked the idea that Mace Windu was the Jedi to find and rescue Obi-Wan from Stewjon, just adds more interesting layers to their friendship (honestly I don’t even know if Stewjon is a hostile planet or not, canon and fanon really blur the lines in obis backstory)

We always see Mr Super Serious head of Jedi Order Windu, there’s not enough enough of Windus soft side out there (he would be GREAT with kids don’t even lie) 💜

God tumblr really nerfed the quality so bad 😭

The hallway echoed with sharp footsteps and silence between them—an execution march.

Obi-Wan’s grip clamped tight around Anakin’s arm, dragging him like a disobedient cadet down the temple corridor.

“Obi-Wan—”

“Not a word.”

The chamber door slid open.

Empty. Cold. Secluded.

He shoved Anakin inside. Hard.

Anakin stumbled—then Obi-Wan’s hand snapped forward, yanked him by the front of his tunic, and threw him to the ground.

“On your knees. Now.”

Anakin froze.

“I said now.”

He dropped—hard, gasping as his knees slammed the floor.

Then—fingers in his hair. A fist in his curls. Holding.

“You want to scream at the Council like a brat ?” Obi-Wan’s voice was low, lethal. “Then you’ll kneel like one.”

Anakin said nothing. Couldn’t. The room itself was pressing down on him.

“You disrespected Master Windu. You shouted over Master Yoda. You dismissed Master Kolar like he was a senator’s errand boy.”

Obi-Wan circled him.

“And then you looked at me. Like I’d fix it. Like I’d clean up your mess.”

He stopped in front of him.

“Look up.”

Anakin didn’t move.

Obi-Wan yanked his hair—just enough to make him obey.

“I said look up.”

Anakin lifted his eyes, trembling, wide.

“You will keep them there,” Obi-Wan commanded. “You will not look away. Do you understand?”

“Yes, Master.”

Obi-Wan crouched down. Calm. Measured. Scathing.

“You haven’t earned a voice. You haven’t earned command. You’ve earned this.”

He gestured at the floor beneath Anakin’s knees.

“Say it. Say you don’t know your place.”

“I…” Anakin’s voice shook. “I don’t know my place.”

“Louder.”

“I don’t know my place!”

Obi-Wan stared at him for a long, silent moment. Then stood.

“Oh, but I do.”

He turned away, just slightly—just enough for the words to hit harder.

“And this…?”

A pause. Cold.

“This is where you belong.”

His voice turned razor-sharp.

“Crawling. Kneeling. Against my boots.”

Then—finally—he released his grip.

Anakin whimpered. Quiet. Raw. But he didn’t break eye contact. Couldn’t.

“You wanted consequences? This is your consequence.”

Obi-Wan’s tone turned lethal.

“You will kneel here. Until I return. No matter how long that is. You will not speak. You will not move. You will not so much as blink unless I permit it.”

Obi-Wan walked to the door, slow and final.

“If you're still here when I return,” he said without turning, “we begin again. If you aren't…”

He let the silence finish the sentence.

The door closed.

And Anakin remained exactly where he was.

Kneeling.

Trembling.

Eyes fixed forward.

Chest rising and falling like something was still burning inside him.

He should have felt shame. Humiliation. Regret.

Instead—he was shaking.

With something hot.

Dark.

Addictive.

Something that curled in his gut and whispered that he wanted this.

Wanted more.

Wanted to misbehave again.

Just to be dragged back.

Thrown down.

And reminded of exactly where he belonged.
