I think writing fanfic of the the vampire diaries definitely changed my view point on the characters, by a lot, because you stop thinking the actor and think the character, and who they are, and what they are supposed to be. And I think the ages of the characters than soak in and the relationships and the supposed internal thoughts, the trauma, the logos and the pathos, and then these characters whom I hated (Elena) I start to love so so much, and characters whom I loved (Damon) I start to utterly hate, all because I think I start to see the story differently. The show stops being this CW show of hot 23+ year olds, and you start seeing these characters for what they are. And it also made me love Caroline, Klaus, Stefan, and Bonnie all so much more, and I didn't know that was possible.

you’re mad/ashamed/horrified you actually kind of like

Bamon. I hate that man and Bonnie deserves so much better but I think, in a vacuum, they're interesting and have great chemistry. It's the only relationship Damon has that has any real potential for value and growth in my opinion. Ironically and unfortunately I think that's because of jplecs blatant racism. Because she refused to acknowledge Bonnie as a romantic prospect for anyone of importance to the fandom she accidentally built a relationship between Bonnie and Damon that existed outside of Damon's usual pattern of pinning all his insecurities on a relationship and using his romantic interest as some kind of moral obligation.
that being said fuck him. fuck his soul. wish she burnt him alive but the fics slap and they're hot together.
part of canon you found tedious or boring
the season five doppelganger development. Katherine, Elena, and Tatia are SO FUCKING FASCINATING. The endless cycle of being sacrificed for a male character's growth (Tatia to Elijah, Katherine to Klaus and the Salvatores, and Elena to all of them) and the way the memory of each of them influences and affects the way the future doppelganger is treated and viewed,,,, miraculous and underappreciated.
They're a tragedy that's already been written, specifically for Elena and Katherine, their fates are sealed the second they're born, and the way each of them chooses to fight it. (Elena's technique being determined by Katherines before her). It's so cool. And also something I think a lot of fanon refuses to acknowledge. Not just stelenas (refusing to acknowledge that Katherine was his main motivator for pursuing Elena) or delenas (refusing to acknowledge the effect Katherine and Damon's relationship had on his mistreatment of Elena) but I think Elejah's don't address it enough either. Elijah (imo) has a lot of unjustified anger towards Katherine and (while I understand why we don't always get into it because it's a lot) I think it's something it would be really fun to discuss how that affects his treatment of Elena and how she'd feel about it in a self-aware post-Salvatore world.
so yeah long way of saying the doppelgangers were interesting enough and I found the whole Silas/Stefen thing to be a really cheap uncreative way of derailing that when there was so much to explore already.
part of canon you think is overhyped
The love triangle. Damon and Stefan in general. I don't care about them or their pain. I think Damon's dad should have hit him more.
give me Bonnie's backstory, where the fuck is her dad? has she ever had a pet? what's her favourite movie? forty minutes of her painting a wall, idc. anything.
thank you so much for the ask @sevensistersofsussex

EVERY FUCKING TIME!!!
And the sad thing is there was no reason for Bonnie not to be there!! There was no reason why she shouldn't have been sought after-- especially considering Mama Orginal's ( all the original ) connection to Bonnie's ancestors. It was yet another example of dummy plec and crew sacrificing good storytelling, for cheap placating to a particular group or in plec's cause - able to self-insert & live through a character that... let be real didn't do much of anything ( and I love care and matt but legit ... what did they contribute to this ? !) Bonnie and the whole Bennett line were used to fix mistakes the writers made. They made no real effort to make these characters three-dimensional. They were used as plot props to prop up characters that didn't do a damn thing and it's sad and infuriating and a prime example of LAZY FUCKING WRITING THAT MOST PEOPLE ATE UP CAUSE THEY DIDN'T KNOW ANY BETTER!! The only peace I get now so far removed from that dumpster fire of a show is that Bonnie stan and Bennett stans have made some bomb ass content that honestly is ten times better than what I forced myself to watch for all those years!
Reblog if you’re still pissed that Bonnie didn’t get invited to the Mikaelson ball.

Alaric's character went downhill from Season 6. First of all, Alaric from Season 1, would've never dreamt of getting together with Caroline. Alaric was a father figure to Elena and Jeremy, and Caroline was Elena's best friend. Why on earth would he want to get together with her? Plus, she was his student at one point too. It just doesn't make sense for him to have romantic feelings for her.
And he was just such an asshole? He told Caroline that she wasn't the twins' mother, even though she raised the two girls and literally birthed them. He then proceeded to kill Damon even though he knew that Damon was under the Siren's influence and forced to turn of his humanity switch -> ie, not in control of his actions.
In the Legacies, he had a prison world for the "bad" students. Which once again doesn't make sense for him to do. Why would he trap them there instead of helping them? He did start the school to help supernatural kids. The Alaric from Season 1-5 would've done everything in his power to help them.
Now, I'm trying to take into account that he experienced loads of traumatic things, and that's bound to change someone, but, I don't know. . . his character didn't sit right with me.
Imo, he was so out of character after Season 6 and the directors did a real disservice to his character. It's a pity - he was a great character before - funny, smart, kind, helpful - and they threw that all away.

A TVD what if I would like to write a fanfic about: the Bonnie/The Bennett edition after rewatching the show, starting from S3.
- Abby's reason for leaving has to do with her daughter/family not Elena/ Gilberts. Everything Abby did was for/because of Bonnie/her mother/husband. I might keep the complexity of Abby not wanting the responsibility of being a witch cause I can understand her POV, but she would've been a better mom and taking her responsibility that she has a child, cause why could she do it with Jamie (he does not exist in my fic and Wilson is an alias while she was on the run/in hiding) and not Bonnie? I think it is possible to separate being a witch and a mom.
Speaking of being a witch, I'd even say Abby had to sacrifice her magic to desiccate Mikael then after 14 years it would return as a sign that Mikael was freed by his compelled (vampire) minions, which makes it so Abby returns to MF to protect her family once more. She finds out her mother isn't alive and get a scene with her visiting the Bennett family graveyard with Bonnie.
-Abby and Bonnie's relationship while strained would've been mended as time went on. They would definitely agree/disagree on how to protect MF and put a halt to Bonnie's borderline selfless that gets herself killed. Abby would put her daughter first like how Elena is put first by the others, especially by Damon and Stefan. In that regard Abby would be more self preserving which would cause friction with the others, but would give Bonnie more agency.
- Abby and Rudy would actually interact as estranged husband and wife (cause the show acted like Rudy didn't exist until S4). Rudy would cope with Abby's return by being a workaholic. Abby would give space until he was ready to talk.
- Lucy would definitely return in my fic, cause she said she'd see her again and the show did her dirty.
That's all I have for now that part.
I do have some other ideas based on the first 'Bennett' witch who arrived to the New World with the Mikaelsons family through Ayana. I'd even introduce her child(ren). After the creation of the Original vampires Ayana and her famjly were force to flee, because a witch created the vampires. They werent safe, Esther got killed by her own child, and the villagers/villages around them would probably have an aversion to witches.
Ayana and her kids could either stay in the New World there or go back to North Africa (excuse the lack of specific country) since historically there was some Viking influence there through raids and plundering. It is the only explanation that makes sense to me as to why she was with the Mikaelson, a Viking family, in Europe in the first place. To briefly touch a bit on Africa in the medieval times : there was (slave) trade between West and North Africa. But that is to flesh it out and have it make sense given the lack of depth the writers gave us in the show.
Don't introduce a character if you can't even make the effort to expand on Bonnie's ancestry other than being a token/relevant for the plot and then retcon or never mention it again in your continued lore (cough, cough Esther in the Originals and the total lack or mention of Ayana). Cause people in fandom are acting dense on purpose when it comes to Ayana and the Bennett influence in TVD and the Supernatural world. But again, if the writers can't show the decency then fandom is gonna follow them.
I would possibly even sprinkle some romance here and there (cause yes, I love my "crack" ships and romantic touches in a story in general c). But my main focus would be the Bennett line and fleshing out their history cause we could've gotten soooo much more and it was such a missed opportunity.
Inspired by the many rants I read in fandom about Bonnie/the Bennets, the fans and a few pro Bonnie/Bennet blogs I started to followed such as @cancerian-woman whose insights I read on repeat together with some other talented writers on here

TVD characters =)
Elena Gilbert
Pros:
? Sorry, couldn’t come up with any (besides season 1 and 2 Elena, but that was ruined with her so-called character “development”) So, I’m at a blank here =/
Cons: Selfish, egocentric, self-centered, codependent, immature, whiny, impulsive, manipulative.
In a nutshell:
Tumblr media
In Greek mythology would be Narcissus:
...Seeing his own image in the water, he fell in love with it. But each time he bent down to kiss it, it seemed to disappear. Narcissus grew ever more thirsty, but would not leave or disturb the pool of water for fear of losing sight of his reflection. In the end, he died of thirst.
Tumblr media
Stefan Salvatore
Pros: Loyal, sensitive, self-aware, vulnerable, passionate, honest, sarcastic,
Cons: Addictive, obsessive, permissive, evasive.
In a nutshell:
Tumblr media
In Greek mythology would be Icarus:
Good-hearted and trusting, but against all warnings, decided to fly just a bit too high...
Tumblr media
Bonnie Bennet
Pros: Selfless, courageous, independent, fearless, strong, loyal, intuitive, passionate, intelligent, sassy, curious, adventurous, caring, resourceful, passionate, sensitive, sense of humor.
Cons: Needs to allow herself to be a bit more selfish at times; self-preservation!
In a nutshell:
Tumblr media
In Greek mythology would be Athena:
Goddess of wisdom, poetry, art, and war strategy ... The one and only Queen!
Tumblr media
Damon
Pros: Passionate, direct, fearless, unapologetic, blunt, sense of humor, determined, protective, intelligent, practical, persitant, devoted, persuasive.
Cons: Abusive, possessive, obsessive, dismissive, controlling, insecure, impulsive, self-destructive, manipulative, condescending.
In a nutshell:
Tumblr media
In Greek mythology would be Dyonisus:
God of wine, fruitfulness, parties, festivals, madness, chaos, drunkenness, vegetation, ecstasy, and the theater... Irresistible, and crazy AF!
Tumblr media
Caroline Forbes
Pros: Determined, passionate, vulnerable, straight forward, caring.
Cons: Stubborn, controlling, insecure, demanding.
 In a nutshell:
Tumblr media
In Greek mythology would be Selene:
Goddess of the Moon. Sometimes referred to as Luna and the ‘mother’ of vampires. Bitches better recognize!

Motherland: Fort Salem’s Witches are Superheroes in All But Name
https://ift.tt/2WXAZd4
Witchcraft on television has a longer history than most of its sister genres and has so far shown no sign of going away. In any given year there is at least one series exploring the pros and cons of the craft, whether it’s sisters who happen to be witches (Charmed), sidekicks coming up with a world-saving spell at just the right moment (The Vampire Diaries) or, as with new addition to the canon Motherland: Fort Salem, witches as a coordinated, terrorist-fighting machine.
The show, now available to stream in the UK on BBC iPlayer, comes out of the gate hard with an alternate world in which the Salem witch trials were averted by volunteering all future generations to fight the world’s wars. As we enter that reality, it’s the turn of three young witches all with different attitudes towards the cause. While one is eager to get started, another is plagued by the expectations of her legacy family, and the third is still grieving for family members who died in the same war.
Departing from the old stereotype of warty noses and pointy hats, modern screen witches are almost always young and beautiful. Blame some of that on network casting and some on the idea that the modern witch is not only trying to survive demon attacks and spells gone awry, but also being a young woman in a world built to suppress them. The late 90s saw this notion come into its own, with Charmed following in the footsteps of shows like Buffy in using the supernatural as a metaphor for real-world struggles.
The secret identities that come hand in hand with both wanting to save the world and have a normal life stick these narratives firmly in the same category as more traditional spandex and cape superhero stories, even if that’s not always how they’re seen by audiences.
Fort Salem (as it’s known in the UK) takes it several steps further than other shows of its kind, creating a fleet of witches fighting for humanity completely out in the open, as well as a group of rival witches explicitly painted as international terrorists. The lack of hiding their noble intentions, and fighting against villains that represent extremely contemporary fears, could be a symptom of the Marvel Cinematic Universe completely dispensing with its characters’ own alter egos for the most part. Everyone knows Iron Man and Tony Stark are one and the same.
For the women in Fort Salem, witchcraft isn’t a fun perk that can be used to create various weekly hi-jinks, but an ancient and non-optional calling that almost certainly means an early death for the young women involved. It’s dangerous and is in direct opposition to pursuing the ‘normal’ life that was so central to shows like Charmed or even the 1960’s trailblazer Bewitched.
Of course, being magical isn’t always painted as a positive thing, with Buffy the Vampire Slayer notably using it as a stand-in for addiction. Willow’s descent into dark magic spans across multiple seasons, and we’re shown that Giles’ own teenage rebellion also involved the misuse of magic. This is a take that hasn’t really followed the genre, with most stories equating power with just that – power.

Why Charmed Deserves to be Celebrated
By Caroline Preece
Still, the persecution of magic during the witch trials is often used by television writers as a handy metaphor for the persecution of other minority groups, and that continues in Fort Salem. It’s heavily implied that some of the witches involved in the original army were there not of their own free will, but because they happened to be enslaved at the time.
It was an idea that The Vampire Diaries flirted with but never committed to in any meaningful way. Starting with Bonnie Bennet, almost every magical character to be introduced was black, and it was implied that high society vampires had benefitted from their magic as well as the atrocity of slavery. New Netflix drama Cursed also shows that the ‘Fey’ kind are routinely viewed with fear, their camps raided and their people murdered.
Perhaps because of this parallel, today’s witches are almost exclusively created in the ‘social justice warrior’ mould, with a mixed bag of results. In a lot of ways, it makes complete sense, given that comic books have always presented these larger than life heroes like Superman and Captain America as fighting for so-called ‘SJW’ concepts like truth and justice. It’s just that in 2020, punching Hitler has become fighting more complex terrorist threats.
To see how modern witches differ to those we were delivered in the 90s look no further than the recent Charmed reboot. While the promise that this Power of Three would be ‘more feminist’ than their 90s counterparts may have rubbed fans of the original show up the wrong way, in reality, it’s an update that has seemingly been focus-grouped like mad to appeal to today’s young women. A generalisation, but one that the new Charmed seems to subscribe to.
Supergirl and Batwoman go for similar things with their depiction of two heroes who are fighting as much for their own rights as they are for the safety of others. While Supergirl certainly began in a different era and thus with a sunnier attitude, it grew to resemble its darker counterparts in subject matter while still holding on to its own tone.
But Motherland: Fort Salem takes the heroine witch concept further into the superhero realm than perhaps ever before, combining the persecution angle with the duties of sisterhood and the muddled moral grey area and grind of fighting for a moral cause in a world that seems hell-bent on showing its worst side. It’s the #resistance, wrapped up in a nice fantastical package.
The various cinematic universes and adjoining shows may have struggled in the past (Wonder Woman and Birds of Prey excluded) to properly present a female perspective within the superhero genre but with shows like Fort Salem, Cursed and others, maybe TV’s witches are doing just fine on their own.

I hate how the directors of TVD glossed over Tyler's death, and made it out to be that the characters didn't care?? When we all know that Caroline, Bonnie and Matt would've been absolutely devastated. They had like, one sad scene and then, that's it. Everything's back to normal. Tyler died? Oopsies, barely an inconvenience.
