I was thinking about Undertale, which happens very intensely sometimes.
I really do want my S/I to just be plain ol' human me. Because, becaaauuuse, there's something so very real and very me about finding acceptance and love in a group of monsters where I've only found it in a handful of humans before.
I'm very lonely irl. I don't feel like I fit in with humans as a mass, I often say I'm a dragon or some other non-human creature at heart to ease my own discomfort.
And like, I know, I could just make a monster S/I. But I want to be accepted as me by the UT cast. They mean a lot to me, and I've spent most of today thinking of my dynamics with the non-MTT "main cast" (ig) of Undertale.
Alphys and I surprisingly take some time to arrange our boundaries! We don't dislike each other, but we energetically wear each other out with our similar interests and how we express them clashing at first. But one night I stay longer than usual and we get into talking boundaries instead of anime and fandoms, and we start vibing at similar frequencies. At least, we start feeling comfortable flagging the other down when our batteries are low.
Undyne intimidates me in a one-on-one setting for a very long time. She's fit and energetic and I'm very much not?? In a group setting I think she's swell! But alone, I feel self-conscious and nervous that I'm not meeting her energy. That said, I love her and Alphys as a couple and cheer them on very openly.
Frisk and I get along fine, though since I hc Frisk as mute and using sign language, I don't ever interact with Frisk without an interpreter because I don't pretend to know any form of sign language. Frisk is a busy child in this headcanon post-game world, though, what with the super-shared custody and also being ambassador between the monsters and humans.
I think my S/I would be as conflicted about Asgore as I am irl. On one hand, child killing. On the other hand, he did feel bad about it. On yet another hand, didn't stop him from doing it multiple times. On fourth hand, he had a limited data set. On fifth hand, he's kind of pathetic about Toriel. That shouldn't be part of my hands but it is.
Toriel and I would be dangerous in that she is wholly too sweet and she'd bake me a pie and I'd cry from her baking me a butterscotch pie because I love butterscotch and then she'd feel bad for making me cry and then I'd feel bad for making her feel bad and have no way to make up for it. I need crispy Deltarune Toriel, but also I don't want the Deltarune versions of any of these characters because they're all sadder.
I don't count Flowey in this headcanon world because he would not try to interact with humans besides Frisk, probably? If he did, I dunno, I think I'd just call him an asshole. Everyone would explain the whole story to me, I'd nod and process everything, and be sad for a while for the poor thing... then still call him an asshole.
I left Sans and Papyrus for last for a very good reason.
[In real life, it's important to note, I have a closet comfort cosplay of Sans. Complete with a cloth mask for his grin.]
I want to be so comfortable and close with the skelebros that I'm practically an honorary skelebro myself. I want to have a heart-to-heart with Sans where I say "I wish I was more like you." and he gets uncharacteristically somber and says "Don't say that, Rem. You don't wanna be like me." And he's looking away and on the far wall I see a blue glow as if he's emitting light a mere foot away from me. I want to make human-style pasta and have Papyrus crash through the door only to go "Why aren't you screaming? You should AT THE VERY LEAST be screaming"
Like, I'm highly considering adding Sans and Papyrus as familial F/Os after all the thinking I've done today because it just feels so comforting to be like "they're like brothers to me :)"

A a a I'm trash and I love the way u write todochako so uh,ig a cute prompt would be idols! (I love idol aus so much and I love idol ochako even more) I love ur writing so so much!! I hope you have a good day!!
Awww thanks so much beb!!! Thanks so much for your request! This actually helped me reorient myself in a Todochako mood again so I can keep on working on my other fic hehe :)
Urabitii hasn’t felt this nervous for a long time, and ironically it doesn’t happen on stage, where thousands of her fans gather to watch her newest flashy performance. Nor does it happen during in a talk show, where multiple cameras are poised on her face while a TV host asks her a variety of nosy questions about her private life.
“Uraraka-san, are you ready?”
No. It doesn’t happen in public. It doesn’t happen under anyone’s admiring or scrutinizing gazes, not in front of those who really has a say on which direction her career as a pop idol goes.
She nods, swallowing as subtly as she can. “Yes. Anytime, Todoroki-san.”
Todoroki Shouto nods back with a small smile. Without another word, he faces the piano and plays out the opening notes of his new song.
Ochako struggles to count the beats in her head, almost in desperation, as she watches his long fingers fly across the keys with an ease and finesse she hasn’t appreciated on anyone else playing the instrument before. Very mesmerizing, but not as mesmerizing how his eyes look as he plays–focused, calm like ice but somehow holds a fire burning low, the flow of music from within him unstoppable.
She decides ultimately to close her eyes to keep herself focused on his music. She opens her mouth and lets his words out,
Like stars across the twilight, let me burn for you.
The song is less upbeat and more melodic than anything she’s recorded before, the words less cute and more intimate. Less kitschy, as is her trademark. More melancholic, somehow.
She doesn’t know why the former-pop-idol-turned-award-winning-songwriter would write such a song with her in mind. Even Manager Iida was surprised when Todoroki’s management suddenly contacted him and discussed the possibility of a collaboration. But while flustered, both of them decided to jump at the chance, Iida because it isn’t in his nature to turn down an opportunity as this, and Ochako because of the same reasons as Iida…
Like the cold blue of midnight, let me surround you.
… and also because the pop idol Shouto of five years ago is one of her main inspirations, perhaps one of the solid reasons why she’s here in the first place. When she was a nobody in Mie-ken with a guitar, a bad camera phone, and a Youtube account, she sang one of his lesser-known songs (Patchwork Calico, an autobiographical song about isolation according to the fanbook, one that’s a little too heavy for many fans but resonates with her the most). It was early in the morning, the sun rising behind her head and over their tiny front yard, just her voice and her guitar.
She doesn’t know how it happens, because the lighting is so poor and the sound only just cleaned with her poor sound editing skills, but that gains her a million views in a week and a lot of followers and a lot of expectations that she fulfills somehow. Soon, real offers come in, and she meets the tenacious Iida Tenya, and the rest was history.
Like smoke from the hearth, let me float to you.
And history continues to happen, as the song ends and she opens her eyes and focuses on him.
She doesn’t understand his stare at first. His heterochromatic eyes look turbulent for a few short moments that she wonders are even real. A small smile slowly and undoubtedly makes its way over his mouth, though, forcing her heart into a crazy rhythm that almost hurts her chest.
She takes a deep breath–she doesn’t realize how breathless she is at that point–returns the smile as best as she can. “Is… this okay, Todoroki-san? I feel like I was flat at some parts–”
“No. You’re perfect,” he says easily, infuriatingly so. Ochako feels like dying at that sentence and almost misses his next words. “I think the words could use some work though.”
“You think so?”
He hums, shifts to the side of the bench to give her room to sit. She does so, as coolly as she can, as impossible as it is to keep her blush down.
He doesn’t pay it any mind, if he notices at all. Likely he hasn’t. From the past two sessions of them working on the song, Ochako has learned that when it came to his music, Todoroki tended to shut everything else outside of the sound of his instruments and her voice. She can go there wearing nothing but a potato sack during their sessions and he wouldn’t notice, as long as she sings.
He’s a professional after all. He might have offered the collaboration because he saw a potential in her voice that he wanted to exploit, and nothing else apart from that. The thought keeps Ochako sane, somehow, keeps her from imagining that their time together is anything more than–
“Uraraka-san, how does the song make you feel?”
She blinks thrice. “Oh… me?” she sputters dumbly.
He nods, waits for her answer quietly in a sincere silence while her brain is on the verge of malfunction. Why would he ask, why would he care, what is she gonna say except ahhh it makes me want to melt because it’s you and I really idolize you and here you are making a song for me and–
Now that she thinks about it, she has been singing the words, but not really absorbing what they mean. She taps her fingers together as she rushes to understand the meaning.
“Well… because it’s you, Todoroki-san, performing the song makes me really happy.”
She flinches internally, realizing that she’s using her ‘idol voice,’ a measured cute one reserved for fan meets and TV appearances. Todoroki might have noticed, judging by the way his eyebrows raise.
She bites her lower lip in the next moment, forces some honesty in her words. “It’s… really melancholy, though. The words, and the melody. The songs I write and others write for me are usually about feeling giddy and head-over-heels and this is way different. Probably more genuine than anything I can come up with, and…”
His stare doesn’t go away. She swallows hard, the blush coming on mercilessly. “I don’t know… I feel a little afraid to sing it, to be honest. Like, finding a way to someone’s side that I won’t ever reach. I wonder if I feel what I’m supposed to feel when I sing the song.”
She feels quite stupid admitting it, because the song’s words are vague, quietly poetic. Todoroki probably doesn’t mean to put in the stupid pining she feels when the words come out of her mouth.
Yet, he is oddly captivated as he listens to her rambling. Eyes never leaving her, he says, “So that’s why it sounds different.”
“Different?” She can’t help the nervous giggle that escapes her. “I know, I know, I probably ruined the song, I’m stupid for saying so, and–”
He shakes his head. “It’s not stupid. The song is… different than expected. Your voice made it better, but the words are mine. I don’t think it does justice to what you can do for the melody.”
“Oh,” is all Ochako can say, without blubbering herself into oblivion. Trying to recover, she says, “You don’t mean that, Todoroki-san! I mean, I’m just another pop idol, my range isn’t that magical, and–”
He seems amused by her expression. “Uraraka-san, do you know why I asked to collaborate with you?”
She stops mid-ramble to stare at him dumbly.
It seems to take him a few moments to gather his thoughts. She’s worried about the turbulence that appears briefly in his mismatched eyes, floored by the tenderness that comes after. It’s hard reading Todoroki Shouto. She always feels like she’s on the verge of cardiac arrest when she looks into his eyes and tries to figure out what he’s feeling any given moment.
“I… saw it. Listened to it, I mean,” he tells her with an odd sincerity. “When you sang Patchwork Calico on Youtube.”
Oh. If her face was warm before, now it’s hot, her blood searing lava through her capillaries. She squeaks indignantly and hides her face in her hands. “Oh my god this is embarrassing, you of all people should not have seen that–”
The sound of a low chuckle disarms her momentarily. “Please don’t be embarrassed. I enjoyed it.” She feels a cold hand over her arm, making her look up at his eyes, suddenly so close to hers she sees the amused gleam of sapphire and onyx at a blinding frequency. “I loved it, in fact. I didn’t think my song could sound like that.”
“Like what?”
“Like… a sunrise.” She makes it obvious that she doesn’t understand, and again he chuckles. “It’s not only because you sang it as the sun rose. I mean… “
He exhales, as if deciding how much to say. In that moment, Ochako tries to remember the words to Patchwork Calico, the feelings of loneliness, of brokenness. Of scars that won’t heal.
She wonders why the song resonates with her so much, because it really is heavy. She doesn’t think that she has any of Todoroki’s struggles when he wrote the song. But like many kids she has had to deal with loneliness, of fear because of how unstable her family was then, of a broken heart when the boy she has loved for years never loved her back.
Still, she’s surrounded by love. Her parents love her, her friends love her. And she thinks she knows how to love back. She thinks of them when she feels tired and broken. She thinks of them many times when she’s on stage and offers her voice to the crowd.
Finally, Todoroki speaks up, utterly surprising her. “… it sounds hopeful? That there’s something beyond the isolation.”
His eyes are on hers again, unwavering. “I never thought that anything I wrote could sound like that. It’s… captivating.” One hand goes to the piano, playing out the notes to his song again, somehow sounding different this time. “I… wanted to see if you could do that again.”
“That…”
He smiles softly. “Change the music.”
In the way that only you can. She inhales, suddenly breathless once again.
“All right,” she says, returning the small smile. “I’ll do my best, Todoroki-san.”
They speak in low, intimate tones. Pen scratches along paper, hands press on the keys in broken melodies. Ochako sings his notes and her notes in an honest way she’s never tried before. She knows she doesn’t imagine the captivated look in Todoroki’s eyes as she does, and it makes her heart go into overdrive.
They compose the song successfully, and release it days later, filmed from the intimate setting of Todoroki’s home studio. Her honesty gains her some fans, and her melancholy makes her lose some, but it’s certainly a memorable performance that has people talking for weeks after that.
Needless to say, it isn’t the last collaboration between the pop idol and the songwriter.

Granj is an artist and performer who has recently releases a brand new project, BRYCEBEATS S1.
May 2021 - Granj is an artist and performer who has recently releases a brand new project, BRYCEBEATS S1. He was born in Flushing, Queens (NY), but was raised in Cutler Ridge, Florida. Throughout the span of his music career, he’s had the opportunity to develop a distinctive sound, which is in equal parts atmospheric and energetic. The new release features 9 songs, each setting the bar higher and bringing new ideas to the table. Ultimately, this album is a perfect example of what it’s like to produce great hip-hop music with an open-minded attitude.
The record begins with the song “CITGO,” featuring NYciTi which has a heavier, darker sound that still has a laid-back quality to it. The next song on this release, “Glacial Frequency,” is actually a fantastic production, which combines experimental atmospheric sounds with a slightly lo-fi beat. The track is an instrumental with a relatively bare and minimalistic sound, allowing enough space for the kick to truly pump and the snare to hit with a lot of depth, without getting lost in the most atmospheric components of the mix. The next track, “Long Way (Reign’s Song), begins with a long, subtle introduction synth swell, only to dive into a deep, powerful beat. The build up is really excellent here. The song starts incredibly bare-bone at first, but as you keep going, more instruments creep in and there is even room for some vocal samples and unique chopped loops, adding so much texture to the mix. The fourth track, “Stay,” is undoubtedly one of the highlights of this particular release. The song’s rhythm is inspired by trap music, especially in how the snare has a more clap-like tone as opposed to being deeper like on some of the other tracks. The hi-hat pattern is very sophisticated as well, adding so much detail to the groove of this instrumental. The drum machine tones in general are amazing on this track, offering a cool analog flavor. I also love the chopped, delay-drenched melodic patterns, which really fill the space beautifully. The next track, “Dye Yung” is perhaps one of the darkest on the album. The song has a bit of an ominous texture in the melody, which gives the beat a post-industrial feel, very cinematic and intense. When I close my eyes, I can picture the dark, urban landscapes of films like Blade Runner, but with a grittier take on it. I really love that big swell-like break that leads to the second part of the song a little under two minutes in. The pattern has a lot of tension both rhythmically and melodically, with those huge movie-style drums adding more size to the mix. The following song, “Wholelife” is one of the most experimental compositions on this particular release. I love the resonant, metallic sounds of the synths and the fact that the beat starts off with a kick-only pattern, before breaking out into a full-on blast with fast-paced hi-hats and deeper 808s. Next up is a song titled “Deadliest,” which also features some dark ambient sounds. The intro to this track reminds me of a dark space-age ocean and it feels like the tide is carrying me away with every passing bar. The nocturnal, dark and heavy atmosphere of this beat is truly awesome, and I think this would be super-interesting reworked as a full song with the right vocalist to match the texture! The eighth track on the album is named “Steinway St” and it features a more traditional trap influence over an experimental soundscapes with drones and various vocal ad-libs and samples. Last, but definitely not least, the final track on this release is a song named “Up Here.” This particular tune is a perfect conclusion to an exciting record, and it sets the bar higher in terms of how everything comes together stylistically. The vocal parts are melodic and really offer a great contrast with the lush soundscapes of this composition.
One of the most distinctive traits of this release is certainly the variety of the material, and the drive that fuels the production of the artist. The beat feel very nuanced and rich, an obvious sign that this producer is actually genuinely connecting with his work, in a much deeper way than simply slapping some loops to a grid and load some presets and call it done.
In addition to the personable and edgy performance value, this release is also quite distinctive because of the sheer quality of the production. The mix is balanced and very detail-oriented, making for a lively, edgy and stark sonic approach. In other words, there are many subtle nuances in this release, which really add to the richness of the track when summed up together. The frequency spectrum of the mix is also very balanced, with a tight, yet deep low end working wonders along with a smooth top end, which adds a sense of clarity to the music.
BRYCEBEATS S1 stands out for its modern sound, but although the production is quite polished, it is never overproduced, allowing a lot of wonderfully organic  and “human” elements to really add liveliness to the mix.
Ultimately, I’d definitely recommend giving this one a shot, particularly if you are a fan of artists such as Frank Ocean J Dilla, Flying Lotus, Kanye West and Odd Future. This is the kind of track that will surprise you for it sonic variety, and it will keep you on the edge of your seat due to its catchy, yet unpredictable arrangement. I always love to hear from artists who set the bar higher and push the envelope when it comes to their productions: this certainly appears to be the case!

We also had the opportunity to catch up with the artist for a cool interview: keep reading for more!
I love how you manage to render your tracks so personal and organic. Does the melody come first, or do you focus on the beat the most?
Answer: Melody always comes first; I have to find the why & the melody is the narrative. With that said, I probably spend the most time on the beat though, melodies come easy & I find it harder to sustain moments than to create them.
Do you perform live? If so, do you feel more comfortable on a stage or within the walls of the recording studio?
Answer: I have but being reclusive by nature, I spend all my time in the studio just taking my time to further evolve my songwriting process. When my song is on though, I’m comfortable wherever I am.
If you could only pick one song to make a “first impression” on a new listener, which song would you pick and why?
Answer: I would choose the 1st track on my new album “Citgo”, this track goes from 0-100 & is both hot & cold. It really is one of my most passionate tracks to date & the melody during the chorus feels innovative & forward thinking.
What does it take to be “innovative” in music?
Answer: I feel it’s having a wide variety of tools/techniques under your belt, being exposed to a decent amount of elite level work, grabbing from unrelated sources, & grafting a process that sets you apart from your contemporaries.
Any upcoming release or tour your way?
Answer: We’re dropping new custom merch & many many singles leading up to my debut album “Adolescent Presence”. There may be another beat tape on the horizon as well. *winky face*
Anywhere online where curious fans can listen to your music and find out more about you?
Answer: My latest project Brycebeats S1 is out on all platforms but you can catch it here with a nice little visual on YT

Neonatal Cow Milk Sensitization in 143 Case-Reports Role of Early Exposure to Cow's Milk Formula
Authored by  Arnaldo Cantani
Tumblr media
Abstract
Objective: Cow's milk (CM) allergy (CMA) is a disease of infancy, usually appearing in the first months of life. Symptoms triggered by CM at first introduction are not completely defined. The evaluation of infants for possible CMA is one of the more common problems encountered by pediatricians. Purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of severe reaction to CM and clinical manifestation triggered by CM administration in the nurseries.
Materials and Methods: The series includes 143 prospectively studied CM-allergic babies.
Results: At the first introduction of CM, at the age of 1-8 months (median 4 months) all infants had immediate symptoms the babies were probably sensitized during the first days of life. Particularly sensitizing appears to be the exposure to CM formulas in the neonatal nursery.
Discussion: Little doses of allergens are more sensitizing than larger ones. We provide clear evidence of the immunological effects of oral antigen administration during the neonatal period, and discuss the possible critical allergen trans-mission to the nursing baby via breast milk (BM).
Keywords: Cow's milk allergy; Neonate; Neonatal nurseries; Severe reactions; CM sensitization; Breast milk
Go to
Introduction
A major cause of sensitization to CM in genetically predisposed neonates is the (in) advertent administration of CM in neonatal nurseries. Neonatal care should include 49-100% of such infants given supplements of CM or hydrolysate formulas (HFs) during the first 3-4 days of life [1-5]. Among these babies CM allergy (CMA) was more frequent [6], until to 100% of infants, none of them had symptoms at the first CM administration [3]. Im-mediate reactions at the subsequent CM feeding bring into focus a delayed effect of the "hidden bottle" [2]. H0st et al [3] documented that the 40-860 ml of CM received from 39 neonates during the first three days contained 0, 4-7,4 g of fê-lactoglobulin (fêLG). Feeding half of babies with a CM formula and half with HFs for 1-4 days and then with BM, if necessary supplemented with HFs until the third month, total IgE titres were at the 5th day signific-antly related to the dose and frequency of supplements received (200-500ml) [7], maintaining significances until 12 months [8] especially in at-risk babies.
In at-risk children, prospectively followed-up from birth during 18 months [9] and re-evaluated at age 4-6 [10], the cumulative prevalence of atopy was 18% in CM-fed or 33% in wholly BM-fed babies, and in at-risk children the incidence was as high as 11 or 61%, respectively [9]. Newborns with 2742 week gestational age and 2 SDs (standard deviation) below the mean normal weight at birth correspond to prematures responding in a different manner to sensitization and onset of atopic manifestations. During the follow-up, the prevalence of atopy was nearly similar in both groups, yet skin prick tests (SPT) positive for CM significantly correlated with RAST only in CM-fed infants [10]. We have also studied four additional at risk infants who were exposed in the nursery to a first HF dose during their first days of life, and elicited acute allergic symptoms when fed again this HF at the end of an exclusive breastfeeding (data not shown).
Healthy newborns accidentally exposed to CM in a nursery develop a modest and transient antibody production (primary immune response). Such initial responses are self-limited and gradually resolve due to development of tolerance despite unremitting allergen exposures. At the second encounter, CD4 clones from non-atopic infants have a Th1 profile, whereas in atopic infants provide help for IgE synthesis (secondary immune response) [11]. Remarkably, there appears to be a consensus that BM-feeding for at least 4-6 months will delay, if not prevent allergy [12-48], although a case of apparent sensitization via BM has been reported [48].

Materials and Methods
We have prospectively studied 143 CM-allergic babies, 79 males and 64 females aged 4-8 months (median 5 months) with IgE-mediated CMA, who attended between June 1997 and December 1999 the Allergy and Clinical Immunology Division of Rome University "La Sapienza". The diagnosis was based on SPTs, all positive to CM, and oral food challenges (OFCs) done in a hospital setting which were positive to CM in 74 babies, to egg in one baby, and to a HF in 50. In total, 125 out of 143 babies (87.4%) were positive to OFCs. Parents of each child gave details of their allergic disease (if any) and their informed consent. The babies were defined at risk of atopy when at least one parent had or had had diagnosed and treated atopic disease. Data were statistically analyzed using the Student t and the X2 tests.

Results
At the first introduction of CM, at the age of 1-8 months (median 4 months) all infants had immediate symptoms, as follows: anaphylactic shock (9 cases), urticaria-angioedema (37 cases = 25.9%), skin rash (13 cases = 9.1%), diarrhea (25 cases = 17.5%), vomiting (19 cases = 13.3%), respiratory manifestations (wheezing or rhinitis) (18 cases = 12.6%), and worsening of atopic dermatitis (AD) (59 cases = 41.2%). Several children had more than one allergic manifestation. All children but twelve (82.8%) had positive family history for atopy (p = 0.0001). Only 10/143 infants (14.3%) were fed CM since birth; the other 133 were BM-fed for 3-8 months (median 4.5 months). Two children breastfed from birth were probably sensitized to CM proteins present in BM since their conditions improved when the nursing mothers followed dietetic restrictions. Analysing the clinical charts of the infants and interviewing the parents, we learned that 133 (93%) of the CM-allergic babies were fed a CM formula in the neonatal nursery in the first days of life. (p = 0.0001)

Discussion
In this prospective study we learned that as many as 133 newborns were fed CM in the newborn nurseries, and this data tallies well with previously alluded to studies. As a result of OFCs, a larger proportion of babies (41.2%) had a worsening of AD symptoms, however it is remarkable that 12.6% presented with respiratory manifestations. As previously reported, there is a large consensus that BM-feeding for at least 4-6 months will delay, if not prevent allergy [12-48]. A note of caution is their unmatched results owing to methodological differences. Given that CM and egg allergens are present in BM, it was also thought that a maternal diet excluding the above allergens may be important in atopy prevention [13,34,42]. A typical case was reported by Lifschitz et al [48], an anaphylactic shock due to CM protein hypersensitivity in a newborn who was mistakenly fed BM that had been expressed before CM products were eliminated from his mother's diet, as it is correctly shown in the title [48]. More than 70 years ago Talbot documented that AD in a fully breast-fed infant could be related to chocolate ingested by the mother, and that AD cleared up when the nursing mother avoided the offending food [49], a phenomenon recently confirmed [3]
However, IgE-mediated sensitization through BM is rather rare: 0.042% [50] or 0, 28% [3]. Therefore, inadvertent exposure to CM appears to be far more important than the very low CM amounts transmitted via BM [51]. A note regarding a study based on HFs for allergy prevention [17]: the frequency of BM- feeding was high (98%), and in 232 not randomized such babies the incidence of CMA was 1.3%. The study is far more important because newborns who received a CM formula in the nursery were not included into the program [17]. We have stressed the negative effects of the maternity wards. To avoid the possible risks it should be clearly stated that giving any formula in the first few days of life is strictly forbidden unless prescribed by a pediatrician or de-manded by a mother who is unwilling or incapable to breastfeed her baby [41].
A new front was unexpectedly opened up by the significant report that a 22- week-old fetus responds to a great variety of oral and inhalant allergens including CM ßLG, and egg ovalbumin [52]. That is why reducing intake of highly allergenic foods in the last trimester has not been found to be worthwhile in atopy prevention in at-risk babies [51,53-55]. In conclusion, as early as in 1935 Ratner [56] recommended that isolated CM feedings to BM-fed infants should be avoided during the newborn period.

junior year is officially over!
it was really hard (evidenced by the frequent hiatuses from tumblr) because academics, friends, and extra curriculars were becoming way too... smothering. but at the same time, i’ve gotten a lot more grateful. i wrote thank you letters to all of my teachers for the first time, ever. next year i’ll try to get them actual presents haha, but i guess i have more realistic (aka lower) expectations for how life is like. there’s just a lot of pain out there!
(this post is not that personal so i don’t mind ya lurkers lurking!) (the break is just so it doesn’t clog anyone’s dash)

Human spit is actually a great cleaning solution (and other award-winning scientific finds)

Human spit is actually a great cleaning solution (and other award-winning scientific finds)
The annual Ig Nobel awards, given for real scientific research that also makes you laugh, are a festival of hilarity. Prior winners have included a doctor who cracked only the knuckles on one hand to test whether it caused arthritis (it didn’t), an entomologist who voluntarily got stung by insects in order to create a pain index for them, and two researchers who explained why woodpeckers don’t get headaches.
It’s silly, yes, but it’s also a wonderful celebration of the essence of science. It’s purely about discovery and learning, and the joys of investigating questions. Some of the research is just for fun (though it’s still published in academic journals), but some of it also serves some greater purpose.
In that spirit, we rounded up the 2018 winners and explain why the heck you’d want to know this stuff:
Medicine: Riding a rollercoaster can help people pass kidney stones
The winners: Marc Mitchell and David Wartinger
The research: Mitchell and Wartinger took a biologically accurate model of a kidney (or at least the parts that matter for passing a kidney stone) modeled on a particular patient, inserted three stones of varying sizes that the patient in question had passed, and suspended it all in urine. They then took this contraption on a roller coaster that lasted 2 minutes and 30 seconds (with no inversions, but several sharp turns and drops) to see whether the motion would dislodge the stones. They did this 20 times (and all, it should be noted, with the permission of the Guest Services team at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom).
It turns out that sitting in the rear car did kind of help the kidney stones get moving, though they note people with large kidney stones probably won’t benefit. They also note that regular roller coaster riding could genuinely help those who have already passed a stone, as it would facilitate the movement of microscopic stones before they can build up.
The why: More than 300,000 people go to the emergency room every year with kidney stones, which are (anecdotally) one of the most painful experiences a human can have. Maybe if we all rode more roller coasters we’d have fewer problems. These two originally got the idea because of reports of spontaneous kidney stone passage on roller coasters and while bungee jumping, so it’s not so crazy.
Anthropology: Chimps and humans imitate one another about as often, and about as well
The winners: Tomas Persson, Gabriela-Alina Sauciuc, and Elainie Madsen
The research: These cognitive scientists went to their local zoo (the Furuvik Zoo/Lund University Primate Research Station in Sweden) and watched a group of five chimpanzees to monitor how often humans imitated them and then how often the chimps imitated the humans back. After 52 total hours, they found that both species imitate each other about as often—and about as accurately—as the other.
The why: Imitation is an important way for young humans to learn, as any parent of a toddler can tell you. Apes are known to imitate, but not necessarily in a social context—they may learn how to eat certain fruits by imitating another chimp, they just haven’t been known to imitate for social or communication purposes. The authors wanted to test whether that was really true, since it indicates an important aspect of how an ape mind might be like ours.
Biology: Wine experts can identify a fly in a glass of vino just by smell
The winners: Paul Becher, Sebastien Lebreton, Erika Wallin, Erik Hedenstrom, Felipe Borrero-Echeverry, Marie Bengtsson, Volker Jorger, and Peter Witzgall
The research: A bunch of fly researchers realized that, since only female Drosophila melanogaster produce the pheromone Z4-11AI, they could distinguish the males from the females just by sniffing them. They wanted to know whether other experts could do the same, and so asked a panel of eight wine aficionados to smell some glasses that had previously contained a fly (marinating time: five minutes) of one sex or another. Apparently, these folks can also distinguish the differences between male and female fly scent.
The why: Lots of animals communicate with smells, both within and between species. Maybe fly scent tells humans something—we can’t know unless we know whether we can detect it. This particular pheromone is part of the blend of chemicals that make up the characteristic clementine scent, and D. melanogaster loves citrus fruits. Perhaps this family of odors is also related to mating or social signals. Or perhaps not. But at least now we know we can tell a lady fly from a dude.
Chemistry: Human saliva is a pretty good cleaning solution
The winners: Paula Romão, Adília Alarcão, and César Viana
The research: These researchers decided to test whether spit-cleaning was really effective, but rather than test it on household items they went for 18th-century gilded sculptures (we explain why below). Since saliva contains amylase, an enzyme that breaks down starches, it turns out to be quite an effective cleaning agent.
The why: Conservators have apparently been cleaning old paintings and statues with their own spit for years. They’ve always found that it can clean an artifact without breaking it down, and these conservation scientists wanted to test whether that was actually true.
Medical Education: You can totally give yourself a colonoscopy
The winners: Akira Horiuchi
The research: A gastroenterologist took it upon himself, literally, to see whether you can give yourself a colonoscopy using new, smaller-diameter endoscopes. He found that it was totally possible by holding the controller knob in his left hand and the tube in his right. On his four attempts, it took him 4, 5, 3.5, and 4 minutes to complete the procedure. He noted, however, that you’d probably need a special chair to facilitate the process.
The why: There’s apparently something of a stigma against getting colonoscopies in Japan, and Horiuchi reasoned that if you could give yourself one you might be more willing to get one. Given that colonoscopies are highly effective at preventing colon cancer, this might actually save lives. Colon cancer begins as a benign polyp that is easily observable on camera (that’s why colonoscopies are effective), and though we’d needwe’dneed to train people how to do this without perforating their own intestines, it might just work.
Literature: Nobody reads the manual
The winners: Thea Blackler, Rafael Gomez, Vesna Popovic, and M. Helen Thompson
The research: It may seem obvious to you, but apparently the people who write manuals weren’t sure—no one had ever bothered to study it. These researchers not only confirmed that no one really reads manuals for new products, they did an in-depth investigation as to the various reasons why. You should read the (very long) study if you’re curious, but one of the more interesting highlights is that not only do people find manuals overwhelming and confusing, they think that they shouldn’t need to read the manual. A product should be well-designed enough that the owner doesn’t require written instructions on how to use it.
The why: Silly as it may seem to you, those responsible for designing manuals should be informed as to the potential challenges associated with them. If all these people are just writing manuals for no one, we should maybe rethink how to best inform consumers of various risks and instructions.
Nutrition: Humans are low in nutritional value
The winners: James Cole
The research: Cole found nutritional compositions for every part of the body, from the liver to the muscle, and worked out how well a human body would fit into a proper diet. Turns out, it wouldn’t. Humans may have a similar nutrient profile than other mammals of our size, but we contain significantly fewer calories than the large mammals that Paleoliths would have had access to. It’s worth noting that the values he found were only for adult males, as he writes that “data for females and sub-adults are not available within the published literature, and the collection of primary data of this nature was outside the ethical (and legal) scope of this study.”
The why: Some of our paleolithic ancestors were occasional cannibals. The question was why. Maybe human meat is good for you, and would thus have been a valuable source of nutrients in an era when you had to literally fight for all your food. Cole notes that there were clearly other reasons to eat other humans back then, including ritual practices and just “meat for meat’s sake.”
Peace: People have a lot of road rage, but the reasons and effects vary
The winners: Francisco Alonso, Cristina Esteban, Andrea Serge, Maria-Luisa Ballestar, Jaime Sanmartín, Constanza Calatayud, and Beatriz Alamar
The research: This paper measures the frequency, motivation, and effects of shouting and cursing while driving a car. You may be extremely familiar with this kind of behavior, but as with a lot of common experiences, it’s been little studied. Some Spanish researchers decided to survey drivers to see why they were so angry and what could help them be less aggressive.
The why: More than a million people die in traffic accidents every year, and some of those are certainly due to aggressive driving. Perhaps if we understood more about why people drive angry, we could prevent it. For instance, these researchers found that drivers were more likely to have road rage in urban settings because they were following behavior that has been deemed acceptable. (They should also win a prize for science that confirms the obvious).
Reproductive medicine: Stamps are a cheap, effective test for nocturnal erections
The winners: John Barry, Bruce Blank, and Michel Boileau
The research: By creating a ring of stamps around the base of 22 potent men and 11 impotent men, these researchers were able to find a way to test whether their subjects had experienced nocturnal erections. These particular stamps had perforations holding the strip together, and so easily break apart when enough strain is applied. It turns out the force exerted by an engorged penis is enough to break the performations (seven of the men woke up from the sensation of the snapping ring), and it’s just as accurate as other standard tests for nocturnal erections.
The why: Some men with impotence have the organic form, meaning they can’t get erections while awake or asleep. Others have psychogenic impotence, in which the problem isn’t a mechanical one but rather is a psychological issue—these men can and do get nocturnal erections. Urologists need to test for this since the treatments will vary. The standard test is a mercury-filled strain gauge, which requires patients to sleep overnight in the hospital. The stamp method can be done at home, and as the researchers point out costs only 30 cents (in 1980, when the study came out) for three nights of testing versus $500 for the in-hospital version.
Economics: Harming a doll and imagining it’s your boss helps you feel better about their abuse
The winners: Lindie Hanyu Liang, Douglas Brown, Huiwen Lian, Samuel Hanig, D. Lance Ferris, and Lisa Keeping
The research: In two related studies, these researchers found that employees who have unfair or abusive supervisors can have their sense of justice renewed by hurting a doll version of their boss instead. It was pretty simple: they basically asked people to imagine their supervisor as the doll and then gave them tools to harm it. Then they asked them a bunch of questions about how they felt about their boss.
The why: Keeping employees happy is a crucial part of maintaining a productive company, which means managers should be paying attention to ways in which they can ensure their subordinates’ emotional well-being. When those employees feel they’re being treated unfairly, something needs to be done to address it. Dolls may not be the right option, but they note that “subordinates who receive perpetual mistreatment from their supervisor may benefit from harmless acts of symbolic retaliation against their supervisor.”

NASA information: Space agency confirms asteroid EXPLODED over Moscow in Russia
The shiny area rock was noticed on June 21 over a number of cities – together with Lipetsk, which is southeast of Moscow.
The quick fireball produced a tremendous smoke path that remained seen for a number of minutes.
NASA’s sensors detected that the area rock produced an explosion equal to 2.8kilotons – making it essentially the most explosive asteroid entry measured to this point in 2018.
The US area agency stated the occasion occurred at 1.16am UTC.
The explosion dimension corresponds to the disintegration of a small asteroid of about 13ft (four metress) in diameter.

CAPTURED: The shiny fireball was noticed in Russia final week
That dimension is in distinction to the estimated 65ft (20 metre) asteroid that exploded in the air over Chelyabinsk, Russia, in February 2013.
That explicit blast injured round 1,500 individuals, and broken over 7,000 buildings.
There have been no reviews of harm from the blast, however some eyewitnesses reported listening to a loud sonic growth, in response to the International Meteor Organisation.
“That was beautiful,” one witness wrote on Twitter.
Another stated: “Sounded like a sonic boom”.

Infrasound sensor detectors registered the low frequencies produced by the explosion of the area rock because it entered Earth’s environment.
Although intense friction with the air would have brought on a lot of the area rock to disintegrate, it’s doable that small fragments could have reached Earth’s floor.
NASA estimates the meteor was shifting at about 32,200 miles per hour (51,800 kilometres per hour) when it exploded about 16.7 miles (27 kilometres) above the floor of the planet.
Fireballs are a comparatively common incidence, typically coinciding with meteor showers.

The Chelyabinsk fireball from 2013 was by far essentially the most highly effective such occasion recorded in the final 30 years, however an much more highly effective impression is believed ti have occurred in Siberia in 1908.
NASA lately unveiled its newest plans to defend Earth from probably hazardous area rocks.
It stated there are 1000’s of asteroids that also haven’t been detected.
To date, astronomers have found greater than 18,000 near-Earth objects (NEOs).

Only this 12 months practically 500 such objects have been recognized.
The area agency is busy getting ready for the arrival of the huge asteroid Bennu.
That area rock is claimed to be the scale of the Empire State Building.
It would have devastating results on civilisation as we all know it if it have been to crash with Earth.
