If you're a relatively young person with no degree who is competent using a PC and stuck doing blue collar work, i truly believe that you should just lie about being a recent college grad and apply for admin/entry level desk work. most jobs will filter you if you don't have a degree, so lying about something basic (humanities is probably ideal since theyll assume you have social competence/awareness and a chance of Not Leaving) will at least get your foot in the door. and of course, entry level jobs never check that shit. you can emphasize your experience with computerized systems during the interview process and reference how school helped develop your tech literacy and research/presentation skills. I am insisting this because the world is a better place with computer touchers in it 🫶

Similar to one of my other asks, Stan gets put into some places(amusement park,zoo, aquarium, idk) system as the 'ai'

And reals a bit of havoc like, oh I don't know, releasing the atractions

Lol, I just answered it so this is perfect.

Everything goes almost the same, Stan gets hired, gets shoved into a digital system, works for a while before he realizes he's got nothing to lose by going awol, and releases all control, sending the place into chaos and eventually getting it shut down.

Let's say, since the last one was a theme park, that this is a zoo, specifically one for supernatural creatures. Most of them ran wild then escaped back to wherever they came from or ran wild in the local-

No wait. Better idea. Gravity Falls was once a very normal town, until the 'zoo' set up shop, was up for 4ish years, then all the creatures escaped and started living in the woods. Ford was drawn there because of the incident, wanting to see how so many anomalies would adapt to the different environment. Has very little interest in the zoo itself, as now only the more dangerous creatures live there and he isn't interested in the mechanical failures, not when watching gnomes create a civilization is far more interesting. Fords there for a year or two, cataloging all the creatures, when Fiddleford rolls up.

Because Fiddleford is interested in the abandoned zoo, specifically in the AI they implemented just before the place went haywire. Since Fords an expert on the local wildlife, Fiddleford figured he could guide him to the zoo so Fiddleford could get as much of it as he can salvage, maybe figure out went wrong and fix it up for his own use. Plus, Ford can get some info about the creatures from the zoos data base, maybe learn something new!

They go through the woods, ender the zoo, and it's... pretty alright? Sure there's horror beasts and everything's falling apart, but when the systems working its not stopping them from getting into places and seems to be guiding them away from more dangerous areas? Fiddlefords excited about it, that maybe the AI is still active and wasn't the reason the zoo fell apart like theorists say, that maybe it was some other system failure and it tried to save people!

(Wrong on all that says Stan, watching them from the cameras and a little hurt that Ford thinks he's a robot to steal, but it's fine, Stan's ready to ditch this place yesterday)

Manage to get to the central control area, pull up the Ai, and get assaulted with a wall of text that's Stan, excitedly saying how ready he is to ditch this place, gets a bit awkward when Ford has a breakdown about his computerized brother after the denial phase is done, but let's go and get out of here! He's ready to live in a toaster as long as it's not this sucky place

Very annoyed when the Fords want to investigate everything more, but they do turn the intercoms back on so now Stan can talk to them as they explore the employees side. It's a digitized voice that sounds nothing like him but it's better than nothing. Helps them read all about the unethical experiments that went into keeping a bunch of supernatural creatures captive and turning a human person into an AI. Learn that Stan wasn't their first choice, but he was the only succes so he got uploaded into the system when they couldn't recreate the process.

Bad end, there's no body for Stan to go back to, that things dead and gone, and when they learn Stan's responsible for the zoo going haywire and getting a bunch of people killed the slight hesitation they show in taking him with makes him snap, and now it's Portal up here with a murderous AI out to kill- no wait, he's very sorry. He's not gonna kill his bro and his bros nerd friend!

But they are staying with him forever, so please accept their fate as the zoos newest exhibits so he finally has company. He can't take being alone here any more, and he doesn't care how they feel about it. Fords escape at some point regardless of how successful Stan is at trapping them, and now Fords wracked with guilt over his ai brother and the fact that Stan's technically dead.

Neutral end, Stan's body isn't salvageable, but they get over the zoo thing quickly. Stan gets uploaded into a laptop and Fiddlefords helps to make him a body of some kind, something small to start that over the years gets more complex, until Fords old and grey and Stan stops Fiddleford or anyone from helping him with upkeep, content to not live forever as a robot and go offline for good when Ford passes.

Good end, Stan's body is still there! It's on ice in some fashion, or tubed in Mystery goop, but Ford can reverse the process and re-upload Stan's conscious back into his body and they can all go home :) last minute Horror movie in escaping the derelict zoo, but then it's bro bonding as Stan readjusts to being a person and Ford process the fact that Stan's been here for years, in a days walk from Fords house, and Ford had no idea. Just gonna hold his bro and hyperventilate a little about how close he came to losing his twin. Maybe seek revenge on the people in charge of the zoo when no ones looking.

I do wonder if a bit of why I am to a great extent like "LLM's are pretty cool actually" is because as a teen i was around a lot of linguistics-aligned programmers who were endlessly playing with chatbots and phrase generators with various markov chains and bayesian filters and grammar definitions. And they were bad! The most advanced comedy bots I've ever seen were thousands upon thousands of lisp S-expressions stacked together to just barely assemble shitposts and now you can talk to the damn things?

A family of core memories for me is playing with whatever the latest chatbot on the web was and they were all crap! Smartbot was useless! There was a Sony cross-promotional event with one of the James Bonds where you used an NLP bot to direct an agent through a simulated scenario and it would lose track of your meaning if you were even slightly indirect.

If you weren't following natural language processing in the 2010's you might assume that LLM's are a small improvement over a burgeoning field but in the timeline of computerized language they basically came out of nowhere and were immediately remarkably good. Hell! Look at Frank! I've made bots like early Frank by chaining together statistical language modelling and filters and they were simply not good!

GARGOYLES ARE PEOPLE TOO

[3/3]: Gargoyles speak with two voices simultaneously, one from from their mouth and one from their spiracle (blowhole). Accordingly, their languages are constructed out of two layers of speech, spoken overtop on another, almost always saying different things. There is a “fore-word” and a “back-word,” the arrangements of which can change the meaning of a sentence or phrase almost undetectably. The language centers of their brain are trained from birth to listen to two things at once, an effect that is widespread to the rest of the brain. Gargoyle texts seem similar to human books at first glance, however two pages are rather one page read simultaneously. A single piece of text or isolated spoken phrase is less than half of the meaning the whole construction has, as the pairing of the two is where communication and clarity is formed.

What this means is that it is nearly impossible for a human being to understand a gargoyle speaking or a gargoyle text in real-time without some kind of lengthy computerized assistance. It is definitely impossible for a human being to respond in said language, as even if they spoke into a machine that stitched two separate phrases together, the spiracle possesses a completely unique set of phonemes nearly impossible to recreate with a human mouth.

Not even one gargoyle language, out of the hundreds that exist, has yet to be translated in a manner that human beings can derive meaning from.

A Gargoyle speaking will always sound like two people talking overlapped at once in a completely foreign language, while human beings speaking sound to gargoyles as so simple and meaningless it is akin to the barking of a dog.

The impact this extreme difficulty in communication has had on the widespread intergalactic conflict between man and gargoyle is immeasurable.

To magnify this effect, gargoyles and humans catastrophically breathe nearly identical atmospheres, making it a certainty that gargoyles and humans are capable of living comfortably within vicinity of one another.

When gargoyles OR humans spend the hundreds of years and trillions of dollars to process the atmosphere of a dead planet and flood that world with life, a tragic commonality is for the other species to take this world by force. The cost of war is nothing compared to the cost of maintaining a world with great care and attention, and its one all sides take with glee.

It is for these reasons that gargoyles are just the same as human beings, and both kinds are in grave danger as a result.

Writing Notes: Apperceptive Visual Agnosia

Agnosia - A rare disease in which a person can’t recognize objects, shapes, or people. Often due to a brain or neurological condition.

Visual Agnosias - Disorders of visual object recognition following brain damage.

Apperceptive Agnosias - According to Lissauer, are those in which recognition fails because of an impairment in visual perception, which is nonetheless above the level of an elementary sensory deficit such as a visual field defect. Patients do not see objects normally, and hence cannot recognize them.

EXAMPLES. Among patients who have been labeled “apperceptive” are those:

who cannot discriminate a circle from a square,

who can recognize any one object but cannot see other objects presented at the same time, and

whose difficulty with object recognition is manifest only with objects presented at unusual orientations.

Apperceptive Visual Agnosias - also known as visual space agnosias, are characterized by the inability to perceive the structure or shape of an object. Persons with apperceptive agnosias have difficulty matching objects of similar form.

This type of agnosia is also classified as an "Object Agnosia". Specifically, the apperceptive type, i.e., the percept is not fully constructed and, therefore, patients are unable to copy drawings.

DIAGNOSIS

Agnosia is diagnosed through:

physical examination,

neuropsychological testing, and

brain imaging.

Examples of neuropsychological tests include:

visual distinction between real and unreal objects,

facial recognition,

verbal and nonverbal sound recognition,

odor recognition, and

tactile form recognition.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanning may be used to identify brain lesions to aid diagnosis.

CAUSES

It is thought to arise from a breakdown at relatively early stages of visual processing, where the elementary features of the stimulus are processed. Object recognition through verbal description by the examiner is preserved, instead.

These patients have relatively good visual fields, visual acuity, brightness discrimination, color vision, depth, and motion perception. Despite this, shape perception is abnormal in such a way that patients cannot recognize or copy pictures, letters, and even simple geometric shapes.

In most cases of apperceptive agnosia, the brain damage is diffuse, often caused by carbon monoxide poisoning.

In the rare cases with circumscribed brain lesions, the damage primarily affected the ventral occipitotemporal cortex bilaterally.

According to a widely accepted interpretation, apperceptive agnosia can be considered a deficit of shape perception resulting from defective perceptual grouping of object local features into a global percept.

TREATMENT

There is no direct treatment for visual agnosias. However, patients can benefit from rehabilitation to teach them alternative strategies that target specific difficulties.

Few agnosic patients regain sensory function, and most gains in recovery occur within the first few months or year of diagnosis.

Speech therapy and occupational therapy can help agnosic individuals cope with their conditions.

Figuring Out Presser Foot Pressure On My Juki DDL-8700 (success!) (pictures!)

I had difficulty finding any detailed or visual breakdown on how to achieve optimal presser foot pressure, and since this is my first Big Girl sewing machine...I never really had an option before. My goal was to not only adjust the presser foot, top + bottom thread tension to suit machine quilting, but to be able to recreate that setting whenever I switch between garments and quilting. My only rule/limitation was that I would figure this out using a plain 1/4" presser foot, and not rely on the comfort of a walking foot. My captions will be beneath the photos they're referring to.

My test piece: lightweight cotton batting sandwiched between two pieces of cheap cotton, pin basted. Approximately 6"x6". If I was going to test things out, I didn't want it to be obscured with nice fabric.

My initial top thread tension. Any adjustments will happen while the presser foot is down.

My initial presser foot pressure knob measurement. This was the aspect that I felt I needed most explained to me. Measured in centimeters for accuracy. If using a sewing gauge like this one, I stood it next to the knob in a way that allowed the slider to stop at the top. Measured at 3.4cm. Adjustments to this knob will happen while the presser foot is up.

To keep it familiar, initial stitch length set at 2.5. I tend to go all over with stitch lengths, as I make a variety of things.

"Unchanged tension. 3.4cm. 2.5 length"

This stitch line is what those settings produced, using 40wt Glide thread for top (gray green) and bottom (white). Looks fine-ish, but bottom thread is pulled up, and stitches aren't consistent. The foot additionally pushed the fabric around unfavorably.

Here, "threads" refers to threads of the SCREW that are exposed. I initially thought that my solution was to tighten the top thread tension, but as the bottom thread never changed...I realized the opposite was true lol.

These are all of my experiments with the pressure knob at 3.4cm. Likely unintelligibly, when I tightened the bobbin case I drew how the screws were now oriented when looking at the case from that perspective. The tightened bobbin stitch line was the only one where there was no bottom thread showing. Ultimately the fabric was being pushed around too much, still.

Next, I loosened the pressure knob to 3.6cm, and loosened the top thread tension until the convex part of the screw was just barely poking out. Bobbin tension stayed the same.

These are what my experiments with 3.6cm looked like, with the arrows indicating "this is the same, but..." I experimented with 3.0 stitch length partially through this knob height. Ultimately, I am most pleased with the presser foot pressure knob sitting at 3.6cm, the bottom thread tension like my drawing, and top thread tension with screw barely showing. CRITICALLY, however, was that within these last stitch lines, I tried regular overlock thread for the bottom. It 100% made a positive difference. I actually kind of dislike shiny slippery thread, but wanted to throw an extra curveball to the test.

There are so many variables that go into settings, and compared to our computerized automatic machine cousins (soft hands), the task of creating reliable settings every single time can be daunting. Struggling with it has been a little upsetting, because it's affected my ability to produce things worth selling. Hopefully soon I'll TRULY put it to the test :) I also need to figure out the settings for lightweight + weird fabrics. I hope that even if my own numbers aren't useful, maybe someone can benefit from seeing the process.

I was thinking about how Ancestor Moths are required for the reading of Elder Scrolls and this whole process and the priests who do it are linked to Julianos. But Julianos is a syncretic form of Jhunal whose totem is the Owl while the Moth is linked instead to Dibella.

We can think about the information in the Elder Scrolls as like “Raw data” that’s too computerized for any mortal mind to comprehend. It’s the “coding” of Nirn aka the “Damned Equation” that Julianos “incanted”. So, how do mortals go about understanding the abstract and divine? They filter it through art.

Dibella’s totem is utilized to turn all of that existential gibberish into an understandable picture and/or narrative. She creates a Graphical User Interface instead of just throwing binary at you.

Maybe that’s why reading the scrolls so much leaves you blind. Excessive beauty has been linked to leaving mortal sight impaired before: Moonshadow is said to be so beautiful that it leaves mortals half-blind (We won’t get into the Azura/Dibella links rn). What could be more beautiful than a picture painted by the goddess of beauty herself?

And maybe this all is Dibella’s hand in creation as a whole? Someone else wrote the plot, but she’s the illustrator.

Yup; here you go! On a related note, I’m sooooo excited for Chapter 4 to release on console later this month! Admittedly I haven’t watched any playthroughs of 4 since January because I’m trying to preserve the experience of playing it myself for the first time (not knowing the puzzles, cutscenes, etc). That said, if any of this is canonically inaccurate I apologize. (If anything is glaringly false I’ll probably edit it later on)

Harley Sawyer Regressor Headcanons

Didn’t start regressing until after the Hour of Joy. Having his computerized body combined with the amounts of gore and isolation was the trauma that triggered it.

That said, I think he was predisposed to it because of a really bad childhood.

Given how he turned out as an adult, I think he had neglectful and verbally abusive parents. He strikes me as that ‘troubled kid’ who was bullied, antisocial, and cruel to anything that couldn’t fight back. He would have used science and experimentation on animals as a way to cope by playing god from the time he was a child, which led to his career choice.

Little age ranging from 0-8. He’s an impure and involuntary regressor.

Avoids regressing as much as possible.

Generally, his regression consists of tantrums. Lots of destructive tendencies, made worse by the fact that he has no caregiver, rules, or safe space.

That said he adamantly denies guilt or responsibility. He would pin the blame on his parents for not raising him better, on the higher ups at Playtime who asked him to create the Bigger Bodies, on the Prototype for pulling the strings, etc. Anything but accept that he was at fault for the suffering he caused.

His denial is another part of his coping complex; when he’s in that childish headspace (mentally the same age as some of the children he experimented on) he can’t physically accept the fact that he caused them such fear and pain.

Personally, I think a Little!Sawyer could grow to be remorseful over his actions at Playtime if he had a caregiver who would walk him through all his traumas and help him process. That said, Harley would be adamantly against the idea of having a CG, since he’s so used to being independent, stubborn, and distrusting of others, so good luck (*CG Player redeems Harley AU, cough cough*)

On a less dark note….

Most affectionate to Yarnaby when he’s regressed. Enjoys cuddling with him, especially when he’s worn out. The lion is pretty much the only one he tolerates.

His version of play is lining up and sorting things.

He’s creative in the sense that he’ll make up stories, but has little interest in playing them out. Quietly imagines rather than actively playing pretend.

He will draw on occasion, but don’t expect him to share his crayons or show off the finished product. He’s very protective of his crafts. (He might show Yarnaby though)

Bossy baby

His mechanical body does cause him distress at times; he can’t eat, can’t bite his nails, can’t stretch and move like he used to, he makes so much noise if he even takes a step, etc. Copes with this by staying stationary and trying to upgrade the hardware however possible. He’s no mechanic but enough research in bioengineering keeps him hopeful.

His cape is his security blanket and favorite regression item. Even when he’s Big he wears it under the excuse of ‘accessorizing.’

Hello Cas I've wanted to ask this for a while and I didn't know who to ask and I'm hoping you can help, I see a lot of posts about how we shouldn't allow AI to study fanary and fanfiction and I wanted to k ow why I'm just curious and want to understand I see its a boundary for a lot of people and I don't really get why. I mean nothing hurtful or offensive and I'm sure there is a good reason I just don't know it. Also I wanted to tell you that I think it's soo cool how you do ballroom dancing as a hobby and how much I love your microfics I look forward to them everyday much love ❤️

Hi! No problem at all! There's a few reasons.

First, AI creating fanart and fanfiction is super harmful because it reduces the demand for human-created works. Which is horrible, because humans spend so much time and effort writing and drawing, while AI can do the same in minutes. AI works always have flaws, and by increasing the supply of works, it gives human creators less credit for the amazing and superior work they do, that they spend a lot more time on.

Think of it like fast fashion- people want clothes so bad they'll take the cheap, factory-made stuff, but they don't realize that this causes poorly-made clothes to be the norm, and it takes money (credit) away from designers, workers and everyone else in the industry. (It's also horrible for the planet.)

Creators deserve so much love and credit for what they do, because it isn't easy, and to be replaced in minutes by a machine that creates work that isn't as good is upsetting and insulting, you know? AI gives the illusion that with a few clicks of a button, anyone can instantly create something akin to the work I spent 10 months on, and that's just not true.

Second, using fanfiction to train AI isn't okay because, simply put, it's stealing. If someone uses my writing to train AI, they didn't ask me, and I essentially did labor for them by writing the work they're using- I deserve pay (though I wouldn't want it, I would rather them just not use my work, because of reason three).

Third, it's also important to know the reason why people are so touchy about a lot of fanfiction issues is copyright laws. When we start sell fanfiction, bind and sell fanfiction, etc (which sometimes AI users do) it could bring up issues with copyright infringement, because we're making money from creating work from a copywritten work. This might allow fanfiction to be censored and policed, which would basically ruin the entire thing.

Last, it just takes the humanity from it. Fandom is supposed to be a community. Writers, artists, and readers all work together on so many different forums to create works and discuss their favorite fandoms. To me, it just feels icky that people want to take away that community (intentionally or not) by computerizing the process.

New working paper is believed to be the first to link weaker memory and diminished ‘flexible thinking’ skills to the pandemic’s academic downturn.

New research may help educators and families zero in on exactly how the COVID-19 pandemic caused such an unprecedented academic slump, suggesting that the culprit lies in something basic and crucial: children’s ability to think, remember and problem-solve.

And here’s a twist: The same core difficulties are bedeviling teachers too.

The findings, contained in a new working paper, are believed to be the first to identify brain changes as an explanation for why students have suffered, both inside and outside the classroom, since the pandemic drove millions out of the classroom.

Nancy Tsai, a Harvard University psychologist who studies the effects of stress on executive functions and who is the study’s lead author, said the new findings offer the first evidence to help us “understand the ‘why’” of the pandemic downturn — “what is actually causing all these issues that we’re seeing and talking about in the news.”

The paper, from the private tutoring firm MindPrint Learning, examines the cognitive skills of students nationwide and finds that, simply put, over the past several years, kids’ famously ever-changing brains have changed for the worse.

Since the pandemic’s onset, students across all ages and economic levels have begun to demonstrate weaker memory and “flexible thinking” skills — those represent the mental bandwidth needed for multitasking, shifting from one activity to another and juggling the day’s demands. But for a few groups, such as younger and lower-income children, the changes have been more profound.

They also show that their teachers’ brains are weaker in almost identical ways, which could help explain high rates of frustration and burnout. They suggest school districts have their work cut out for them if they want to keep their best employees on the payroll and returning to the classroom each fall.

Understanding the ‘why’ of pandemic downturn The data come from a large, widely-used assessment, the Penn Computerized Neurocognitive Battery, developed in 2013 at the University of Pennsylvania. It consists of a series of cognitive tasks that measure subjects’ accuracy and speed in several major cognitive domains, including working memory, abstraction, sustained attention, episodic memory and processing speed.

MindPrint has administered the assessment periodically to its clients over the past decade. The most recent rounds totaled 35,000 students and 4,000 teachers in 27 states.

By most measures, U.S. students are suffering. Last year, NAEP scores showed the average 13-year-old’s understanding of math dropping to levels last seen in the 1990s and reading levels dropping to 1971, when the test was first administered.

More recent research has shown that while older children are showing encouraging signs of academic recovery, younger kids aren’t making the same progress. Many students who weren’t even in a formal school setting when COVID hit are already falling behind — especially in math.

The Penn assessment found that children who attended elementary or pre-school during the pandemic and who are now 8 to13 years old showed the largest declines in memory.

“Younger kids haven’t really developed a lot of these core cognitive skills,” Tsai said. “It hasn’t solidified for them, either through development or just through practice in the classroom. And so younger kids are more vulnerable to these pandemic shifts.”

But students across all age groups showed worse flexible thinking, which researchers now theorize contributes to lower academic performance — as well as challenging behaviors.

Tsai said kids from lower income backgrounds were more vulnerable to these changes, specifically in verbal reasoning and verbal memory, than their higher income peers, with bigger declines in verbal scores, which are highly correlated with academic achievement in all subjects.

Adults in the study had similar declines in both memory and flexible thinking, possibly explaining higher reported levels of teacher dissatisfaction and low morale.

Nancy Weinstein, MindPrint’s CEO, said weaker flexible thinking isn’t necessarily a problem for experienced teachers who have developed strategies to cope with stressful situations and can modify plans on the fly. But those with less experience may be unable to change gears when lessons go astray or students act out in class. That may lead to higher teacher burnout.

Across the board, teachers’ skills suffered in areas such as verbal and abstract reasoning, spatial perception, attention and working memory, but they saw the greatest losses in verbal memory and flexible thinking.

“If we care about that, we need to know how to help them,” Weinstein said. “And there are some tried and true things you can do.”

She said schools should consider sharing data like this with teachers so they can understand that their frustration in class might not be due to students alone. That could make a big difference, she said, in “their willingness to put in the effort to change, as opposed to saying, ‘Why bother?’”

For students, Weinstein said, offering them more opportunities to practice skills with breaks and rest between study sessions could help. Schools should also consider “scaffolded memorization” techniques that break learning into chunks and address each individually.

Could such techniques help students — and teachers — regain a measure of pre-pandemic skills? Weinstein suggests the answer is “Yes.”

“The environment will matter, but certainly we can regain some of that if we do the right things,” she said. “And we know what the right things are to do.”

Crystal Green-Braswell, coordinator of staff wellness and culture for the Little Rock School District in Arkansas, said offering the Penn assessment to teachers and staff has helped many think more deeply about their work — and about their own thinking.

“People who have had the assessment will say, ‘Now, you know my processing speed is slower — y’all are going to have to give me a moment,’” she said.

That’s a huge change in a profession in which most workers have been asked “to take ourselves out of the equation and just get the work done,” Green-Braswell said.

She sees offering such insights to educators as part of “rehumanizing” teaching. “When we provide this kind of assessment and we provide this kind of space for folks to actually get to know themselves, we are humanizing this profession and helping people to realize, ‘You play a role. You play an active role. You matter.’ ”

Hi all. I hope you don’t mind me continuing this series. This is my last idea for this series so unless I get more ideas, either from my own brain or others, then I suppose it will be it, unless I decide to implement some submission ideas. But this is probably going to be the most loaded goonbot induction. The “software updates” to goonbots will be a few: obviously from the title you’ll be making more goon faces, especially when you’ve transformed into a goonbot, acting more robotic while in your goonbot state, and lastly reinforcing the idea of your dick as an antenna and your nipples as dials. Anyhoooo, I also got some conflicting info regarding whether Sam competed yesterday after all. I was alerted to this Tweet. 👇

It's all very confusing. On the one hand, it is weird that if Sam competed, he never posted anything on his own IG. On the other hand, Hyrox DID post his results as if he DID compete yesterday. 👇

If Sam decided to not compete and wanted to give his slot to someone else, why wouldn't Hyrox be able to substitute the other man's name? Everything is computerized, so I don't see why they couldn't have made the change easily. Also, isn't it fraudulent to post results with Sam Heughan's name if he wasn't the one competing?

On the flip side, if Sam didn't actually compete, then he literally went to Hyrox to watch Sarah! Those saying "No, he went to watch his friend, Valbo. who also competed." Yeah, except Valbo didn't compete until 6:00 PM yesterday, and Sam was there at 12:00 PM, when the women's competitions started. Literally RIGHT THERE where Sarah was competing. 👇

No reason for Sam to be there 6 HOURS before Valbo was competing if he only went to support Valbo. 🤷‍♀️

I ran out of room to post pics since Tumblr limits to 10 pics, but I also got a DM saying Sam got a bunch of new Instagram follows who are Sarah Holden fans. That leads me to think they went to follow him because they saw him with Sarah at Hyrox.

So I have been reading Valfrey’s honour tier list over and thinking for a while about it. I considered doing it with Wolfbell since it is in fact supposed to be for the tourney contestants, but poor kid is both just a kid and also not finished her entire story. I feel as to judge her now when she has not yet come full circle and overcome her challenges would be unfair to her.

So we’re going to submit the bastard that is Flare Okarda. Who’s my current running oc to become the tourney participant in next year’s tournament (if there is one) and he has made it his personal goal to anger Valfrey as much as possible.

Valfrey of course belongs to @gethoce

For a quick summary of Flare’s character:

He is an original species called a pjofur, who through technological means have achieved ‘reincarnation’. A term used to describe a process in which the memories and personality of an individual are computerized and placed into an organic vessel in order to ‘bring someone back to life’, a process of which has long since robbed the species of their souls.

Flare is a rogue member of the pjofur society, formally known as Jokull, on his third reincarnation something happened and he developed a fatal logic error in his programming that caused him to descend into severe aggression and insanity.

Jokull eventually attacked his assigned romantic partner when she tried to check in on him, almost killing her. He stole a copy of the reincarnation equipment blueprint, deleted his all his backups, and fled the planet and became a fugitive, further descending into madness until he became someone else who couldn’t recognize himself as Jokull anymore, and this person named himself Flare after the intense feeling of being mentally burned alive he felt when he first lost control.

One must live their life for a purpose such as serving a shogun or protecting one's people.

Ah, purpose and servitude. Gross. Disgusting. Boo, even. Flare has a very rocky relationship with purpose and an even rockier time with the concept of serving someone or said purpose, stemming from his time as Jokull before being plagued by the fatal logic error.

Flare would admit his concept of both purpose and serving said purpose to be limited to one very far end of the spectrum, an extremism which has permanently spoiled his outlook on the overall concept making him unwilling to even try to accept there is other, kinder purposes and things to serve. All he can think about was that Jokull was always just intended to be an extension of Jakob. A trophy son and ticket to bragging rights. A cog in the machine only the machine sits in a glass box all shiny and squeak less and flawless.

That was what he had been brought into the world to do, and Jokull stripped himself of any and all individuality for it and denied himself anything that wasn’t serving the society. That was his purpose. His only purpose, for both of his reincarnations. Flare often says that Jokull played their game twice without a single selfish thought or complaint. And what good did it ever do him in the end? When the fatal logic error happened, all his fancy, glorious high end contributions to society did not buy him a single ticket of mercy and he was thrown into the fire.

Flare doesn’t want to be like him. He doesn’t want to ever be more fancy person calculator instead of a being. He’s not Jokull. He’s not the cog in the machine and wants no part of it. The society can rot for all he cares. He is going to live completely selfishly, he’s not going to bend to any one purpose, he’s going to have fun, and everyone else can kick rocks with their teeth.

If left without a purpose one must make it their mission to find one.

Flare’s commitment to having a purpose is equivalent to that to-do list you said you were going to make, and maybe you did but now it’s sitting somewhere in your workspace collecting dust.

He claims his purpose is to fuck around and find out, like how his prime goal with this is simply be the biggest disgrace to Valfrey’s honour code possible. To be free to do what he wants when he wants, ignoring he’s often at the mercy (of which there is none) of the fatal logic error that forces him to do things regardless if he actually wants to do them or not.

He is a force of destruction and chaos with no linear path or progression. His goals ever changing. For all his insistence that he does in fact have a purpose, he is stuck in place, making no true progress, hardly ever finishing the projects he starts before he loses track and jumps to something else, all while continuing his steady descent into further mental instability.

Be the master of one's emotions, yet do not rob yourself of your whimsy for it’d poison your mind.

Control is the last thing he has over his emotions. It’s like trying to control a tornado, or more accurately an intense electrical storm. He has severe emotional dysfunction, his thoughts and feelings and unyielding and uncontrollable torrent of lights and pulsing sounds that has no off switch.

He often describes his feelings as ‘you’re in a room and the lights are strobing and the speaker is on full volume and you have your hand in a bath of electrically charged water also the tag on the back of your shirt is itching you’.

Despite this, he often claims to be horribly bored and under stimulated. This leads him to being uncontrollably aggressive, and he will impulsively pursue experiences, no matter how unpleasant or risky they might be. Often this throws him into the path of combat, the aforementioned aggression Flare exhibits often unrivalled. These can manifest into unhinged outbursts known as flares.

Flare’s lack of control over how he feels stems back to the fatal logic error, which continuously misinforms the brain inside the vessel on how to manage chemicals and hormones, leading to disastrous outcomes and highly immoral decisions.

Always be honest unless doing so risks the safety of those you swore to protect.

Flare will lie without second thought if it will benefit him, Flare is rarely honest unless it’s to give his ‘honest opinion’ on you, and by that he means he’s going to insult the hell out of you. His one and only circumstance to always telling the truth is if you can get him to agree to a set of ‘game rules’ and make him join some game.

He’s not particularly sure why (he blames Jokull, as usual) but if he plays a game while he may not completely obey the rules, he will be completely and openly honest that he did in fact break the rules and a truthful explanation as to why he felt it was necessary to do so.

Do not steal unless it is to protect.

Flare steals about as easily as he tells lies and makes insults. You can bolt something down and that’s only a temporary solution especially if he decides he really wants that thing.

From stealing the copy of the reincarnation technology, to the player’s handbook he possesses (though he claims that he didn’t steal such he found it and while that’s technically true it wasn’t his to take) to arguably Jokull’s entire life and person, to the lives of several people, Flare has taken a lot. And he has really no intentions of stopping any time soon.

He’ll debate with you if stealing to protect himself from boredom or the brain itch of realllllllllly wanting that item is a valid loophole though!

Do not sneak attack when a fair battle is possible.

Flare isn’t necessarily one for sneak attacks, even if he has no issue employing them regardless of the ‘fairness’ of the battle. He often marches right up to his enemies, who, confused by his boldness that often falls into the range of being straight up suicidal, are rarely ready for him to launch into the levels of extreme aggression he is capable of, especially when he outwardly exhibits no means of causing notable levels of damage.

It truly depends on what the person has done to trigger his ire, but usually when such is triggered he will simply go straight into mauling whatever angered him, no warning and no declaration of battle. It is less a battle and more a vicious one sided attack resulting in murder.

There is no honour in being outnumbered, use usually unfair tactics to even the playing field when the odds are stacked against you.

The one and only rule of Valfrey’s that he can get behind. Flare often picks fights in which he’s at the disadvantage, causing him to employ surprisingly creative and effective tactics to gain an upper hand in a fight.

Flare’s primary tactic is to make combative use of his mind reading ability. By using such, he can see where his opponent will try to dodge to, allowing him to immediately turn his attack to that position, or get some kind of warning as to what his opponent(s) might have planned and counterattack. While he is unhinged and spontaneous, operating off the concept of ‘if I don’t know what I’m doing you sure as hell don’t’, he will briefly and with a surprising rate of success preform tactical actions based on what he gathers from his mind reading.

He is not afraid to fight dirty.

Respect yourself, keep yourself healthy and well groomed.

Respect is a concept Flare has very, very little of, much less respect for himself. Often at the whim of a self directed sadism, he will often cause himself harm or even cause his own death just for kicks and mental stimulation. Sometimes, death comes because he couldn’t be bothered to care for himself, he could tell you in graphic detail what the process of starving to death actually feels like.

He often looks like he has stuck his hand in a toaster, bags under his eyes are common, all too often some bone is fractured or broken and not being tended to, or some stab wound has been patched up in a messy hurry.

He insists there’s little reason to dedicate a lot of time and care to his vessel. It is replaceable and temporary. If he dies, or gets lethally hurt, he can simply make a new one. His attachment to himself, his vessel, even his identity, is held together by a few highly strained threads that might just snap at any second.

For as smart as Flare is you could probably win a bet with him by telling him you’ll give him something if he can define two words of your choice, and if he needs to give you something.

And he’ll agree because he thinks you’re gonna pull out a word like pseudonym or tacenda, only you tell him to define politeness and respect and he just gives you a death glare instead.

If one serves something like a clan or leader that disrespects them or otherwise goes against their principles the clan does no longer deserve to be named kin.
