Part 1

Mithra : Master Sage, you can interview me now.

Akira : Hum... Can I let go of your hand for a moment so I can write in the journal?

Mithra : That won’t do. Remember what we said and write it down later. Don’t forget your priority is to help me sleep.

Akira : Of course…

In order to update the Sage’s manual, I asked the wizards if I could interview them again.

Earlier, Mithra called out to me and took my hand to lead me here.

Akira : Then, let’s start the interview.

Owen : No, this is weird. Why is Mithra trying to sleep in my room?

Mithra : I heard that changing your environment can help you sleep, so I came to try it. Master Sage said they wanted to interview me, so I thought it was a good opportunity.

Owen : What’s with that logic? This is not good at all. And you, don’t go along with this so easily. You want to get killed?

Akira : S-sorry.

Mithra : Master Sage has the important role of making me fall asleep. I would kill you before you can even touch a hair on their head.

Owen : Ah… This is so stupid. I can’t stand this.

Akira : ...A-, Owen! There he goes... Mithra, do you think we offended him?

Feeling guilty, I glanced over at Mithra, who was lazily scratching the back of his head.

He suddenly grabbed my arm and muttered his spell.

Mithra : Oz, let’s fight. « Arthim »

There was the sound of an explosion and a large hole appeared in the wall.

Akira : Whoa! W-what are you doing?!

Mithra : I thought that doing some exercise would help me to sleep.

Oz : ...Mithra, co out.I’ll knock you out as you wish.

They both jumped out from the window and started fighting in the sky.

Mithra : « Arthim »

Oz : « Vox Nox »

Oz repelled Mithra’s ferocious attack with even more power.

Every time their magic collided, the blue sky flashed violently like if they were trying to pierce through it.

Mithra : You call that exercise? Please take this seriously.

Oz : This is not necessary.

Mithra : So annoying... Today, I’ll steal your spot as the strongest for sure.

Mithra’s usually tired green eyes were shining quietly with excitement.

He looked like a fish in the water as he merrily fought against Oz.

Akira : (I’m worried about the situation, but Mithra looks so lively.) (At first, he seemed uncomfortable at the magic manor. But now, he seems to be feeling more at ease.)

Part 2

A few days later.

I was heading to Mithra’s room to try to interview him once again.

Akira : Good evening. Mithra, are you there?

Mithra : I am.

Rutile : Good evening, Master Sage.

Akira : Oh, were you two in the middle of a conversation? Sorry, I’ll come back later.

Mithra : Why are you leaving? You can just come in.

Rutile : Of course. Come join us, Master Sage. I got something I thought would suit mister Mithra well, so I came to give it to him.

Akira : Is that… a dried lizard? Wow, it has eight legs!

Rutile : It’s apparently a rare lizard living in the marshlands in the East that can be used for magic tools. Mister Faust told me that it’s useful for sleeping spells, so I thought maybe mister Mithra could use it.

Mithra : He brings me all sorts of things. Well, I’ll take anything, but nothing is very useful.

Akira : (Now that I think about it, the eye mask that Mithra uses was a present from Rutile.) (He also made that crescent moon body pillow together with Chloe.)

As I looked at the sleeping aids scattered around the room, I remembered something Rutile told me before.

When he lost his parents and was left alone with Mitile, Mithra’s presence became a source of support for him.

Akira : (Rutile’s desire to heal Mithra’s injury from the Calamity might be his way to pay him back.)

Mithra : Well, the body pillow was nice and the dried lizard can be used for various other spells, so keep bringing things. What you give me is useful sometimes.

Rutile : Mister Mithra... Yes, leave it to me! If I find anything else, I’ll give it to you.

Mithra : Aah...

Mithra : It’s noisy everywhere, it’s the worst.

Mithra glanced at his surroundings, seemingly fed up.

I took a look myself and saw the other wizards having a tea party and laughing together, the sound of their voices echoing all around us.

Mithra : I could hear it even from my room. I thought it would feel nicer here in the breeze, but it’s still noisy after all. I don’t think I can sleep… Here.

Mithra extended one hand, asking me to take it. I held his hand with my free one. His fingertips felt slightly cold.

Mithra : Your interview seems boring too, so I might fall asleep while we talk.

Akira : I want to let you sleep and I want to talk with you too... But I’ll prioritize what’s best for you.

Mithra : In that case, let me sleep. If you talk to me instead of singing me a lullaby, I’ll reply when I feel like it.

Akira : So, onto the next question.

Mithra answered my questions at his own pace, as if he was trying to catch butterflies that popped up in his mind.

Akira : (As time passes, I’m witnessing more and more surprising sides of the wizards.) (Mithra was very capricious from the start and my impression of him didn’t seem to change much...)

As his hand gradually warmed up, Mithra’s eyes narrowed from drowsiness.

A soft breeze made his red hair sway gently. Even that color that burned brightly in the snowy fields of the North could somehow look calmer under the shade of the trees.

I would have never imagined seeing him like this when we first met.

Akira : (It didn’t seem like things changed, but maybe they did after all...)

When he’s with Oz, Rutile, or even me, he’s a bit different compared to how he used to be.

I felt like the distance between us was little by little, one step at a time, but steadily shrinking.

Akira : ...Ah, sorry. My next question is... Mithra…?

Mithra : … Zzz...

The area was still filled with the constant laughter and voices of the wizards.

Amidst the noise he had previously complained about, Mithra had closed his eyes and was sleeping peacefully.

Akira : (This too might be a different side of him...)

As I grasped the warmth in my hand, I thought I felt a little bit happy.

Akira : A curse…? Ah, you mean the one that goes “Fall asleep~ Fall asleep~”?

Mithra : Yes, that one.

Akira : (He told me it sounded like a curse before too.) But there are lullabies in this world too, right? I saw wizards from other countries sing some to you before.

Mithra : There are some, but I’ve never seen them work. Rutile and Mitile sometimes fall asleep while singing though.

Akira : Hahaha, how cute. They put themselves to sleep.

Mithra : This is no laughing matter. They were singing for me. Ah, now that I think about it, the other day, the Western wizards came to tell me they wrote a great lullaby. They brought instruments, sang loudly and even started a play halfway through… It was so noisy, I couldn’t sleep at all.

Akira : That sounds more like a musical to me…

Mithra : Well, they sang different kind of songs... Weirdly, sometimes, I feel like listening to your lullaby.

Akira : Is that so…? Well, I’m honored.

Mithra : But I wonder why so... I guess because it sounds like a curse after all...
