Why You Should Order Proof Copies
Hello fellow writers and creatives! I wanted to reach out to all the self-published authors out there. Self-publishing is probably one of the most creative DIY things you can do, because you do most of the work completely on your own. Sure, you may find someone who can help with illustrating the cover of your book or help with proofreading, but for the most part, you’re doing the work yourself.…

I just re-read some pages of The Fellowship Of The Ring and I don't get why so many people take issue with around-20-y/o Elijah Wood being cast. While Frodo Baggins is indeed canonically about 50 years old, the book specifically mentions how he looks like someone fresh out of his teens because he kept the One Ring for multiple years, which is known to keep their owner young and fresh (at least at the beginning until they rapidly age after getting rid of it) - not to mention that since hobbits age slower than humans, Frodo would only be in maybe his 30s. On one page we are being told that multiple people gossip and wonder about how young he still looks, including Gandalf. So if anything, you could say that Elijah Wood was too skinny or too attractive (though I do think he looks like Frodo is described), but not too young.
And I actually like that he looks young because it not only does it make him look cute and innocent, but we also get the notion of someone who has had a relatively quiet and happy, sheltered life before (aside from the terrible death of his parents) and of someone who is visibly sensitive and innocent and gets taken care of a lot. The BIGGEST reason I like his young looks however, is the parallel to young soldiers who are ripped out of their homes by outer forces, by older men who are the ones who started the wars. Young soldiers whose lives are practically destroyed before they even really begin, just like Frodo's - even if he's already half a century old. He comes back traumatized and sick/disabled having saved the world but having lost so much. Most likely his innocence too.

i actually kind of think that the 2003 turtles are so close that none of them really have "a favourite" brother.
Except for Mikey, who's favourite brother is very clearly and obviously Leo lmao

louis loves lestat, a part of the tragedy was/is that he loved/loves lestat so much and can't STOP loving him, that's why he couldn't fully kill him, why he lets him come back home after the drop, why dreamstat is even a thing during paris and stayed with him for 77 years, even when he tried to let him go he couldn't move on or forget about him because he LOVES him

itll always be at least somewhat amusing to me to remember the “sonic plagiarized dragonball” discourse because the people doing it would always act like it was this grand conspiracy that sonic and dbz shared a lot of elements (seven artifacts, super forms, character tropes, etc) and that yuji naka cruelly tried to steal akira toriyama’s work without credit to undermine the guy because he was a hack who hated toriyama for some reason, and then you look at the actual sonic development notes and they’re like “yeah sonic goes super saiyan because we thought it was cool when dbz did it, yeah silver is directly based on trunks because trunks is cool”

okay along the lines of my last reblog because i've been thinking....alright. i am a big disliker of aa5/aa6 for their complete character/storyline annihilation alone. if you've been on this blog for like a day it's probably obvious. that being said! i'm one of those people who's just like. welp. whether i like it or not it IS canon and i just gotta work with what i'm given. it is what it is.
now! that being said. i fucking love the complicated relationship between phoenix and apollo. i think it's fucking awesome and i hate how badly it was nuked in aa5/aa6. so one idea i love to play hot potato with in my head is that while apollo is in khura'in, thalassa finally gets her shit together and she and phoenix break the news to apollo and trucy that they're related. and the main thing i'm really fixated on is the idea that phoenix withholding information from apollo, AGAIN, after phoenix seemed to be getting better and things weren't like they were in aa4 anymore, kind of moves apollo more towards the idea of bouncing back and forth between khura'in and the states once everything calms down, as opposed to being gung-ho for completely settling back down in the states one day like he said he would at the end of aa6.
and i think this change would come as a result of the difference between apollo in aa4 and apollo after aa6, which is that apollo now has options—in aa4, apollo is completely and utterly on his own, with the exception of clay (who wasn't even in the game. and there's only so much a best friend can do). he spent two months unemployed because he literally didn't want to ever see phoenix wright ever again after the disaster that was his first trial. he said it himself:
Apollo: Two months have passed since Mr. Gavin's arrest. My first trial, and I lost both my mentor and my job. Yeah, I'll admit it. I was screwed. But even when I hit bottom, I told myself I'd never come here. Honest.
he was desperate and STILL didn't want to go there. he only came to the wright talent agency because phoenix literally called him on the phone (And Still Did Not Tell Him A Damn Thing Except "Help! We're in big trouble here at the office! Big!"). but in aa6, he has his own law office and he's reconnected with his long-lost brother, who cares about him, wants to work with him and is also A Literal Prince. even if everything in his life were to explode at once, apollo now has the forever option of fucking off to khura'in and just hiding in the palace for the rest of his life (not that he would do this. but the option is There). he's in a far more comfortable position than he was in aa4 to sort shit out, and phoenix hiding the knowledge of his mother from him is something different than the shit phoenix was pulling in aa4, because. well. it's personal!
the shit phoenix pulled in aa4 can be rationalized; for example, kristoph was the killer in 4-1, but they absolutely needed a piece of conclusive evidence and apollo just so happened to be collateral. which sucks, but phoenix had trucy to think about, and i think he would understand that even if he's still rightfully pissed at phoenix for pulling a move like that (side note: apollo would not have had any legal papers when he got sent to america. i think about that a lot. the entirety of his paper trail background is a lie). but it's one thing to be getting jerked around like a puppet on a string for the greater good—it's another to make an effort to put the past behind you and believe that your boss is doing it too, and for everything to calm down for years, only to discover that he's been hiding the secret of your own fucking mother from you this entire time (regardless of whether or not he actually wants a relationship with her, but that's another post). which just gets worse after aa6 because phoenix was right next to apollo when he was breaking down on the bench about dhurke being dead. like. it's personal this time, and it's even more of a backstab because they're supposed to have moved on from this by now! things were better! everything was fine! and then the rug was pulled out from under him, again, and it's not necessarily a final nail in the coffin because phoenix's daughter is his half-sister (and he cared about her despite that. i don't think it would even really change anything) so of course he's going to be back, but. it's something damn close to it.
so...i think apollo's priorities would shift. i think he would stop planning to come back and properly work at the WAA unless they really needed him for something, like Big One-Off Dramatic Cases or whatever (because athena and trucy are still his friends). i think he'd start to lean more into the fact that he has a foot in both worlds. but i just cannot see apollo going back to working under phoenix after something like that gets dropped on him, because again—being jerked around and stumbling in the dark in aa4 sucked, but at the VERY least, apollo and phoenix weren't that familiar with each other at that point. it sucked but they could only go up from there. and, in line with canon, they did! and then phoenix and thalassa dropped the bomb. and. well. apollo is no longer at rock bottom and out of options. if phoenix tried to pull another phone call trick like he did in aa4 on him i'm fairly certain he'd just get punched again.

guess who wrote a 798 word story on how scroll and quill met 🔥🔥
its very long so
Scroll sighed. He didn’t want to go to whoever's party this was.
“Chin up, sweetie.” His mother didn’t turn around, yet could tell he was sulking.
“Can’t I stay home?” He pleaded, once again.
“You need to make some friends, Scroll. This is a good opportunity!”
He sighs again as the car pulls into the venue. He wishes he had denied his mothers wishes and taken Fuzzy, his beloved cat plush, with him.
“It’ll be fun!” She promises. Scroll doesn’t believe her. He just wants to go home.
As they walk in, he sees a lot of people. Too many people. He grabs onto his moms leg, not wanting to stray far from the one person he knows. She walks over to various people, having short conversations, but Scroll doesn’t say anything.
He clings tighter to his moms leg the more people notice him. He doesn’t know any of these people, so he doesn’t see why he should talk to them.
He glances over, across most of the parents, spotting a few kids running around. Around his age, it seems. Some of the kids are a pencil, an ink pad and a scruffy looking feather. A quill, maybe? Feeling his mother begin to move, he reverts his attention back to his mom, moving onto a container of fish food and exchanging a few words.
The fish food leans down towards him. “Hello there, little guy!”
Scroll leans away. Even though the fish food chuckles at this, he thinks it makes it clear he wants to go home. He thinks.
“Sorry about him, he’s not… social.” His mother apologizes. Why does she need to say sorry..?
Then his mother walks up to a pen. Scroll, being 5, struggles to read the label. He doesn’t bother to listen to the conversation, and looks back at those kids he saw. The feather seems… intimidating, honestly. He watches as they run around, one or two fall, but his attention snaps back to his mom and the pen when he hears his name.
“Scroll’s not the most social, but I’m hoping at some point he’ll talk to some other kids.” His mother sighs.
“My son’s pretty friendly, but ends up scaring off his friends. He’s… chaotic.” The pen glances over at the kids that are running around.
Scroll looks back to see the quill biting someone. The pencil was trying to drag them off, a packet seeming to yell, and an ink pad… also biting them. Any of those kids could belong to the pen, they all seemed chaotic.
The pen and his mother converse for a bit, but he doesn’t pay much attention. The group of kids running around seemed… interesting. His focus wavered between the conversation and the kids, but he didn’t say anything.
“We’ll just have to see if they get along, I guess. I’ll bring him over if you want?” The pen proposed, pointing over at the group of kids.
“Sounds like a good idea, thank you!” His mother smiled, glancing down at Scroll. “Try to make some friends, okay?”
“...where’s she going?” He ignored what she asked, and instead countered with a question about the pen.
“Well, Gel Pen wants to see if her son and you can be friends!” She smiles awkwardly, glancing back up.
Scroll sees the pen— Gel Pen— walking back with the feather. Him? He thinks, worried about how the feather will act. I don't want to talk to… that!
As they approach, he begins to hear their voices fade in.
       “...so no biting.”
       “Awwh, okay… but can I-”
       “No, Quill.”
“You didn't even let me speak!”
“I know you well enough to know what you were going to say.” Gel Pen smiles, looking up to wave at his mother. Scroll kept holding onto his moms leg tightly.
Gel Pen introduced Quill to his mother and they started to talk, but Scroll didn't quite pay attention. He silently analyzes Quill, seeing how he seems confident with himself.
“...and paired with how much he bites, he tends to scare off his friends.” Gel Pen sighs.
“No I don't!! My friends are my friends because they like me!!” Quill interrupts. With his expression and slightly whiny voice, Scroll can't help but laugh.
This catches Quill's attention, who looks over at Scroll. “Oh, hey, do you want to play tag with us?” Quill smiles, gesturing to the other kids he saw.
Scroll glances back up at his mom, who's avoiding eye contact with him. “Uhm, sure…?”
He can hear his mother sigh with relief. Quill grabs Scroll's wrist and pulls him over to the other kids, dodging all the parents standing around.
Scroll stumbles over his own feet, but he can't help but feel excited to meet those other kids.

Idk if it’s just coincidence that I’ve encountered it quite a bit in the last few months, but recently I’ve come across quite a few websites (and a couple of apps) that are grammatically poorly written but also just like… repetitive. Content doesn’t match the title, overly-broad stuff. Like if I am browsing for a border pattern for crochet I don’t expect the page to start by telling me what a border is and why they’re good and then that there are lots of them and then only give me one, which is the absolute default border, followed by two separate sections on how to weave in ends.
And I don’t know if it’s bc the content is genAI or if it’s just that the writer isn’t very good. And I kind of care, bc if it’s genAI, then okay it’s just shit; the writer doesn’t care about this content and I shouldn’t trust the instructions. They could just make zero sense because a robot wrote them. If a person wrote it I can at least assume an intent to convey something meaningful. So if an instruction doesn’t make sense, it’s probably because it’s badly worded. But if I sit down and work through what it could mean, then I might be able to get it to make sense. At the very least I could contact the author and ask for help.
And with apps (specifically games)? Like. If it’s a human who wrote it and it’s got grammar errors, I might put up with them bc even if their grammar is bad they could still have a really good story to tell. If a robot wrote it then I have no reason to sink time into it finding out if the story is good or not because I have absolutely no reason to assume that it will be. Because robots don’t know how to write compelling stories because they cannot think.
This is not the shit that the robot is good for and not what it should be used for. :/

you gave your views on ai, which I completely agree with. What would you do if you suspected a writer was posting works made by AI? I know myself and a few other authors in a smaller fandom have all been accused of using AI and it's so frustrating - two have english as a second language, but myself and another speak english natively - so I was wondering how you'd approach that as it's so easy to be accused of it. our fics always come through with AI detected through most AI checkers.
i am against ai as adamantly as i am against accusing people of ai
i shared my thoughts on this a little in academic contexts, but i think that accusations of ai are always biassed and can be marginalising. people accuse "too good" and "too bad" writing of being generated, both of which can be explained by a variety of reasons such as writing in a second language, being a perfectionist, having adopted writing styles from classics, etc. to immediately assume ai and pointing fingers can be so disheartening and discrediting. don't be inhumane in your attempt at keeping fanfiction human!
you don't know if someone has used ai and not, and if they have, there is frankly nothing you can do about it. approaching them would either result in an innocent writer feeling awful or an ai-user doubling down. no one will be enlightened with you intervening, no one will stop using ai bc you accused them of it. so in my opinion, you can only ever cause harm with accusations.
if you see a work you think has been written with ai, just don't interact with it. don't interact and maybe even block them if you feel the need. if it is attention they want, take that from them.
going on smear campaigns against writers you think might use ai or sending someone else's fic through ai scanners is quite frankly insane behaviour to me. we are not employed to go on a witchhunt against ai users and will be actively demolishing what should be a safe place if we start pointing fingers left and right.
if you get accused of ai, i would honestly consider just deleting the ask/comment and not entertaining it. there is no great way to handle it or make it stop, other than not using ai and being prepared that accusations like that will most likely fly in for people all around.
