From the Legion M website... The retail edition of Defiant: The Story of Robert Smalls Comic Book #1 will be hitting comic shops across the country on November 6th, 2024. From now until September 26th, retailers can pre-order these special editions (featuring a unique cover different from our Kickstarter and Comic-Con versions), but we need your help to get Defiant into as many stores as possible!
Typically, independent comics often don’t make it onto shelves unless there's demand, and that’s where the power of the Legion comes in. By reaching out to your local comic shops and requesting Defiant Comic Book #1, you can help ensure they stock it. More books in stores mean more people discover the incredible story of Robert Smalls, which brings us one step closer to seeing it on the big screen.
We’d be so grateful if you could share the order codes below with your favorite comic retailers and encourage them to place a pre-order. Even better, if you don’t mind spending a few extra dollars, you can place an order for one (or more if you are aiming to get the “virgin” variant cover) yourself. Your support makes all the difference, and we couldn’t do this without you!
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Catalog: In the "Diamond Previews" catalog (which comic shops can order from), Defiant Comic Book #1 will be listed under "Stranger Comics" which can be found in the independent publisher section on page 386.
What's Available For Pre-Order:
Defiant #1 Caanan White Main Cover - Diamond Order Code SEP242067
Defiant #1 1:10 Virgin Retailer Incentive Cover - Diamond Order Code SEP242068
Variant "Virgin" Cover: A virgin cover means that the full cover image is depicted without titles or logos. For Defiant Comic Book #1, there is a 1 in 10 ratio variant (often depicted as 1:10) that is a virgin of the main cover. This means that for every 10 regular copies a retailer orders, they can order 1 copy of the virgin cover, which helps to preserve the limited nature of the variant. With that in mind, while you may request the virgin variant from your retailer, they will likely charge more or require that you order more copies to be able to get it.
For folks that can't make it to stores: Can’t make it to your local shop in-person? You can pre-order through Diamond's Pullbox Service.

i want to apologize because you answered that 2 days ago and i never responded…guess i really DID die…hi anyway! thank you! glad youre also not dead! i hope that is a normal thing to say…
also thank you!!! im not surprised that youre a regular, it was expected, but thats still really cool in my opinion…i dunno what a pull list is though,,
thank you for the recs btdubs!!! i really appreciate it :3 im sure theyre great! ill try to see if they have them when i ever go back (hopefully sometime soon!) but for now they can stay in my notes app…my bestest friend ever
i dont think theyd be that hard to find, since im pretty sure the ones i got are from like…2002 or maybe even the 90s…because there were a lot of ads. what do you mean this is coming out in 2003? why are you talking about the GAMEBOY??? it is…2025…
also, i learned that comics have a lot of ads (like every two pages) so theres that…but theyre fun to read and look at :] they also talk a lot about like…teenager stuff and i noticed that too but for some reason the ones i got censor any bad words? i mean, they even censored ass…i highly doubt the majority of comics do that though
also…ive been listening to chappell roan (absolute queen) again and oh my God her songs are catchy. and oh my God is her fanbase lesbian…i feel slightly out of place (im not even a girl to begin with) but her fans are always super sweet, or cool, or both. thank you for introducing me to her…
-💝🌝 anon
omg see this is funny bc you apologize for being 2 days late responding meanwhile im now 2 weeks late responding WHOOPS
so a pull list is basically where you tell the comic book store what issues you want to preorder so when the new comics come out there is an issue 'pulled' aside for you specifically! this helps comic stores know how many issues to order of new releases so they don't end up with too many extras just sitting on the shelves forever. my local comic shop uses PreviewsWorld Pullbox which is an online thing so that i can just add things to my order myself, but at some shops its more like you give a physical list or talk to them in person about it
and thats soooo real notes app is also my best friend notes app is there for me when nobody else is fr
and yeah 90's comics aren't often toooooo difficult to find because that was an era of the market way oversaturating itself (lots of situations where the comic publishers wanted new releases to be seen as special events that could increase in value over time but they made way too many copies of those things so they... just didn't and ended up easy and relatively cheap to track down) but it's usually pretty random which specific titles you'll find at which specific stores!
but yeah, there can be a lot of ads sometimes, i feel like current comics have less ads interspersed throughout but it really depends—sometimes that can be why it's better to read trade paperbacks (like the ones that look more like graphic novel) where story arcs from comics are reprinted all together generally without the ads. but tbh i do think with older comics the ads are fun to look at because they're basically a time capsule of what was popular in that era.
and yes when it comes to censorship, especially if you ever see the Comics Code Authority logo on the cover expect to see swears largely censored—the CCA is no longer a thing nowadays but for comics published between the mid 50's-mid 2000's that was a set of rules that most comics publishers followed to maintain a good image/keep advertising support. there were of course always alternative comics that didn't follow the code, but most mainline stories and anything teen-focused usually did. DC for instance had a separate imprint—Vertigo—that was for more mature/dark stories and didn't follow the code, that's where stuff like Sandman and Hellblazer was published.
and hell yeah Chappelll!!!! im answering this the day after she just won a Grammy im so happy for her!!!! its been amazing seeing how much her popularity has grown compared to when i first heard of her. im glad u like her so much 🫶
