Waldo 1.0 basically came together in a single shot. Design, laser cut, assemble, flap mouth. It only allowed me to move my thumb and wrist, and it wasn’t very good at letting me isolate motion, but functioned basically immediately.

Getting the Waldo to this stage, on the other hand, where I can articulate more than just the thumb, and minimize unwanted secondary motion (aka move my fingers without the whole head jerking around) required a complete rebuild of the gimbal frame just to start. I then had to learn 3D printing and surface modeling in CAD, and do maybe 40 prints producing about a hundred parts. I had to radically re-evaluate the entire approach to the hand control design, including the basic premise that a Waldo hand control should be shaped like the interior of a puppet head.

The Henson approach is undoubtedly superior but much much more difficult to pull off. It basically involves placing all the rotary sensors at the exact axis of rotation for all the digits of the hand. Pulling this off has benefits in terms of one-to-one control, but I discovered that it requires incredibly precise placement or else tons of secondary motion is created.

Frustrated, I thought about trackball mice and game controllers and musical instruments. All of these things let you isolate motion by enabling the hand to move the way it wants to. The sensor doesn’t have to care where your joints are and how they move, you just have to be able to reach them.

I re-designed the hand controls to be shaped more like an ergonomic mouse instead of like a puppet mouth, and although it has created a new learning curve for controlling the character, it’s immediately obvious that this approach is worth pursuing and may very well be the winning form.

Heyo, it's Mod N here. I'm a huge puppet nerd (that's how I got onto the team!) and I'm thinking about starting a little series to talk about puppetry on here.

Fogtown uses some really cool tech! All our backgrounds are digital, but are physically displayed behind the puppets using screens. There's a few rare greenscreen moments for key shots, but most of the effect is done in-camera (and aided by our talented lighting team!). Puppetry in film and TV has a long history of being at the forefront of special effects technology, I think it would be super fun to talk more about some incredible works that helped us get to where we are today making Fogtown!

Some of my ideas at the moment:

Waldos & 3D rendering (Jim Henson's Secrets of the Muppets)

Blue screens (Wubbulous world of Dr Seuss, Jim Henson Hour)

Mixing mediums with live puppetry with stop-motion (The Golden Key 1939)

Syncing in-camera animated backgrounds (Vinton's The Adventures of Mark Twain)

Let me know if this sounds fun. I'm also still trying to think of a name for the series / a tag to give it. So I'm open to ideas :D

Alright about that LTWW dream, it's very muddled. It was like I was brainstorming about the overall plot of the dream with some people, while simultaneously experiencing the plot as it was unfolding.

Vague images, I'm on a grassy road overlooking a quarry through the trees, by a pick up truck, discussing a potential good guy vs villain plot with people.

Cut to a basement library, pool table in the middle, the characters of the plot lay upon, three. I am and am not one of them. As we begin, or I begin, to hash out the conflict, they move unnaturally, like puppets and worms on strings, weaving together among other stuff that is not them, strange.

I am fighting, narrative/talking about it, with how the heroes will make it out of the conflict. I seem to be at odds with another who is narrating how clearly the villain has the upper hand.

Cut to a more liminal space, a dark room that breaks away into an endless sky, (kinda like this). As me and another person argue over the scene, I feel myself caught in something and dragged towards the emptiness. I grab onto the edge for dear life, finding I'm entangled in the wool of a sweater arm, white and red. I look down to see Lumpy Waldo behind and reaching. The hand gripping the ledge is both mine and his. I hear myself saying how I'd break free, cutting and unraveling binds, and pulling my own hand out like from a latex glove, folding in on itself.

The Scene ends freezing to a still as I make my way to the solid ground, like a frame in a comic. And that is what it was. Another person (for some reason my dream was saying it was @nami-ramen) had made wood cut print panels of the story as it had been narrated. I was admiring the inky carvings as I woke up.

Looking back, I do not think Waldo had fallen, he had gotten back up with me, and was there grinning from the panels.

I feel strangely reinvigorated with the muse. I guess he wants attention.
