Golden Cheese's impromptu expedition to Beast-Yeast ends in catastrophic failure: beaten, broken, and clamoring for freedom as Burning Spice dangles her over the edge of a cliff, ready to deal her the final blow. But before he does... he stops. As does the wind. As does the spice storm whipped up by their frenzy. Everything, everyone, completely frozen in place... all except for her, and for the strange woman in strange clothes that suddenly pops out from behind her assailant, armed with an obnoxiously whimsical attitude and a pair of gigantic golden scissors.
The stranger, with an eerie smile and a twinkle in her one remaining eye, remarks that she has been watching Golden Cheese's little adventure with great interest, and is really rather displeased that the great battle against her nemesis had to end in such a way. She offers Golden Cheese not only an escape from Burning Spice's clutches, but a chance to start their clash over on... more equal footing, or so she describes it. When Golden Cheese rightfully demands answers - how, why, who even are you, what the hell is even going on - the stranger insists that she is but a good Samaritan seeking to liberate both her and her oppressor from their current circumstances.
Not knowing what else to do, Golden Cheese accepts her offer, albeit begrudgingly - but the moment she puts her hand in the stranger's own, she's wrenched from Burning Spice's iron grip and sent flying through a glowing portal filled with bizarre images of melting clocks and whirring cog wheels. She falls, and falls, and falls, until she finally falls out of this mind-melting void and onto solid ground - quickly realizing that she is still in the Land of Spice, just in a different location.
Shocked, confused, and consumed by righteous indignation, she is found and rescued by none other than Burning Spice - but not the one she's come to know and despise. This Burning Spice not only looked different, but behaved differently as well: this one was jovial, good-natured, eager to come to her aid simply because he saw her in need of it.
Well... that, and... because he thinks she's pretty.
Now Golden Cheese is stuck in a distant, idyllic past; a time long before the Beasts fell from grace, where they were still loved by the world and hailed as forces for good. She's taken in by the Wild Spices, whom are likewise shockingly friendly and accommodating towards her, even despite her initial hostility. Her mission is thus to somehow find a way back to where and when she came from (that crazy woman won't just take her back herself, she refuses to) while grappling with the personal and cultural clash between her and the Wild Spices, her crushing sense of anxiety and loneliness born from being trapped in a time and place entirely unknown to her, and - perhaps worst of all - the so-called Herald of Change coming to see her and flirt with her constantly, for his mission now is to court her and win her heart.
Meanwhile, in Golden Cheese's time, Burning Spice - her Burning Spice - knows full well that she is missing. Where she went, and how she managed to escape him, he does not know - but he will. He will spend every waking moment tracking her, hunting her down, gathering whatever information he possibly can to discover her where(when?)abouts. He will have his Soul Jam back. He will have the fight he is rightfully owed. He will have her, one way or another. If she wants to play this game with him, then fine; let this be his greatest, most entertaining hunt yet. One that will inevitably end with him catching and devouring his delicious prey exactly the way he's always wanted to, as was always meant to be, for there is nowhere his little bird can hide where Burning Spice will not find her.
Here's the first chapter haha. Hope you all enjoy it. And I hope you stick with it, the story is far from over. Also the summary on AO3 is cooler than this one. I'm sorry this one is so cringe
Also, everyone please give a round of applause to my wonderful and wonderfully talented friend @pythoticusbingle for making both the cover art and all the illustrations in the fic! I couldn't have done this without them, I consider them my right hand in this endeavor and they're behind just as much of the story's potential success as me

It's not even about the vindication of calling a ship, okay. It's that the supposedly anti woke studio wrote about 3 million words of medieval fiction centering the relationship of the two main characters who are in most ways (or in all ways if you follow the obvious canon momentum of the story) meant for each other, as counterparts who help each other survive the great travails of their lives and who challenge/complete the other to become fuller, braver, kinder people. It's so clear these two people are soulmates, platonically or romantically, something observed consistently by the world around them and by themselves.
Except their society (feudalism, Catholicism) dictates that they are intended to be completely incompatible by nature and divine law. Not just for the obvious fact they are both men, but they are separated by what is arguably an even steeper chasm of social class. Their existence even as friends utterly spites, interrupts, and threatens feudal order right down to its theological and philosophical roots. They should not see each other as human and yet.
It's the fact that they do. The fact that the entire story has been about this--that these two protagonists fit together, undeniably, and grow to love each other fiercely (a love that deepens superbly from their knee-jerk playful puppy-friend-love in kcd1 to something selfless and mature by the end of kcd2). And they do so despite the immense opposition by their world, their social circles, their faith, and indeed their fandom.
And yes, it really does fucking matter that all of this culminates into a deep onscreen romantic love (if you get out of the way and allow it to) between two fandom-beloved male main characters (not just side characters rammed in for an optional gay romance but THE main characters of the duology; the "you" as in the player character and your erstwhile dick-jokes bro you have perhaps grudgingly at first been invited as the audience to love) in a historical fiction story that has been wrongly touted by the worst of our contemporaries as the holy grail of cultural conservatism.
Holy shit. Warhorse -- y'all. I'm sorry I doubted you. So few game writers understand how love works and indeed how people work, let alone translate it so well onto the screen.
Calling this an "optional romance" is not technically incorrect, I suppose, because it's true you can opt out and choose to remain platonic friends. But this language feels like a disservice, as if Henry & Hans's romance is a typical RPG wham-bam fanservice makeout with a minor fan fave character who never interacts meaningfully with the player again. Or as if it's a Bioware-style "give this NPC the right gift and do their side quest and you get to see a jankly ugly-bumpin' montage" situation.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance is so very much not that. The "main, optional" romance scene in question is just one consummation event of two people who have been growing up and falling in love in front of us over the course of some 200-300 (or god knows how many) hours. The fact these protagonists openly love each other is very much not optional.
This is, sincerely, groundbreaking storytelling in this medium and this genre. How fucking cool that we all got to see it now.

I actually love lester's name so much
it's the way apollo(n)'s main cognates seem to be Destroyer (apollymi) and Assembly/City center/Walled fence (apella)
and Lester means "fortified place", "city" or even "camp"
it preserves and remains faithful to one of his meanings
and I can see how zeus arrived to this meaning and where his gross miscalculation was, he wants to defang apollo so he erases the Destroyer, it's meant to "humble" him
but like,, that's exactly who apollo wants to be. someone who builds and preserves, the core of civilization. he destroys too but that's not his preference and zeus cannot see it because he's too tunnel visioned on violence
so like it's like a microcosm of the whole situation, zeus is so scared of apollo's potential for violence that he goes too hard on the other direction and ends up reminding him of his actual core self (bad if you want to opress him!!! self actualization is power in a god's world!!!! you're missing the forest for the trees!!!!!!)
so like, of course apollo accepts the name and reclaims it as his own and makes it a fucking epithet when he starts self actualizing, that's literally what he does every time when in forced proximity to an opposing force, he conquers its concept and takes its name

Graham Chapman was heading for a career as a doctor until he met John Cleese at Cambridge University in the late 1950s. The duo were both members of the Footlights theatrical club, where they began writing comic skits. This partnership eventually led to the creation of Monty Python’s Flying Circus in 1969.
Chapman was considered the most subversive of the Monty Python members. When he was asked why he parodied authority figures, he said:
"Because they don't know their fucking business."
Tumblr media
Chapman said that when he realized he was homosexual, it was "an important moment in my life". He met David Sherlock, his long-term partner, in Ibiza in 1966. When they returned to London and soon lived in together. The next year, Chapman came out to friends John Cleese and Marty Feldman.
Tumblr media
In 1971, Chapman and Sherlock met John Tomiczek, a 14-year-old runaway from Liverpool. They later spoke with Tomiczek’s father, who agreed to let the pair become his legal guardians. (In later years, Tomiczek would become Chapman’s business manager.)
Chapman was a vocal supporter of Gay Rights. In 1972, he publicly supported the UK Gay Liberation Front and helped fund the pioneering newspaper Gay News. The same year, Chapman became one of the first British celebrities to come Out to the public - during a television chat show (although some say he was drunk at the time).
Chapman drank alcohol heavily most of his life. He once described it as:
“(It) was for relaxation. But it became more of a necessity. Four pints of gin a day is really hitting the juice.”
In 1973, while on tour with Monty Python, Chapman missed cues to go on stage and suffered from DTs (shakes, shivers, and confusion), which could last days.
In 1975, the Python Team began developing the script for “The Life of Brian”. Chapman had been considered by the team to be the best actor of the bunch, so he was cast as Brian. At Christmas 1977, Chapman became increasingly concerned that his drinking would impact his performance as Brian, so he quit drinking and remained sober for the rest of his life.
After the film opened in 1979, Chapman said:
“I'm still rediscovering myself. I don't really know who I am.”
Chapman took up pipe smoking at 15, which became a lifelong habit. It would have serious repercussions. In 1988, Chapman had a routine dentist appointment. The dentist discovered what appeared to be a small tumour on one of his tonsils. He had a tonsillectomy, but a year later, it was discovered that the cancer had spread into his spinal column. He underwent chemotherapy and other procedures, but it was determined the cancer was inoperable. Chapman died in October 1989, survived by his partner, David Sherlock, and his adopted son, John Tomiczek.
Chapman died the night before a planned Monty Python 20th anniversary celebration on the BBC. Python member Terry Jones called it "the worst case of party-pooping in all history".
At Chapman’s memorial service, close friend and writing partner John Cleese said:
“I guess that we're all thinking how sad it is that a man of such talent, of such capability for kindness, of such unusual intelligence, should now, so suddenly, be spirited away at the age of only forty-eight, before he'd achieved many of the things of which he was capable, and before he'd had enough fun. Well, I feel that I should say, nonsense. Good riddance to him, the freeloading bastard. I hope he fries! And the reason I feel I should say this is he would never forgive me if I didn't, if I threw away this glorious opportunity to shock you all on his behalf. Anything for him, but mindless good taste."
