I used to write a bunch for MUDs, and a few years ago, I decided I wanted to try making my own game. I started as a writer/QA/project management for my first few game jams because I was struggling to create something fully on my own.

This hybrid “help as needed” role let me get hands on experience and showed me a deeper look behind the scenes of how games are made, without being overwhelmed by all the setup needed to get my hands in the mess – I had previously been daunted by the basics of just setting up engines and SDKs and CLIs and virtual environments and all that stuff.

We had envisioned something impressive with the player changing the story, but as development continued we learned about scoping and timelines: our coder ran out of time, so I focused on finding us public domain images and twisting together a concept of a thing that would work with the functions we had coded. The result is kinda cute.

From there, I tried out making my own games using a range of different engines which focused on text-heavy development:

Twine: webdev (eg CSS, html) for interactive hypertext

Choicescript: uses very basic scripting for interactive cyoa novels

Ren’Py: uses python for visual novels

Quest and QuestJS: for text adventures

Adventuron: designed to teach children how to code via making text adventures

This is probably insider level information but just in case I was wondering if you have any insight as to the retirement age for ballet dancers in Russia. Ruslan has retired from being a principal and idk if it’s on his own term, or was forced or because he’s passed retirement age he can’t dance anymore(?). Because arnt there dancers over 40 in Russia who are still dancing? I hope he stays at bolshoi in some capacity

The retirement age for dancers used to be around 38, but things appear to have changed since Russia’s recent pension reform. Google tells me that, at the moment, a soloist must have worked for 15 years in order to be eligible to receive a pension, while a corps member needs at least 25 years. Just to be clear, no one is forced to retire 15 or 25 years into their career; dancers are simply eligible to receive their pension at that age and can retire if they choose to. It has to be said that many dancers don’t make it to the “retirement” age and leave earlier, often due to injury or heath issues. Of course, people can also be forced out of a company and the profession if management decides to stop giving them roles. 

There are always exceptions. Diana Vishneva is still performing, Lopatkina danced into her 40s, and ballerinas like Ulanova and Plisetskaya danced well into their 50s. 

The question of when a dancer should retire is an interesting one. Tsiskaridze insisted that no danseur should perform classical repertoire past 40 – because it is a “sad sight to behold”. Also, by staying on past a certain age, dancers can block the way for younger generation (this was partly the reason Plisetskaya, Maximova, Bessmertnova, etc. were fired from the Bolshoi by Grigorovich).

Now, he's back in full steam. Did someone hack his account, or did some copyright thing hit him, or did he just decide to take the videos down for personal reasons? On this topic, is he credible? I noticed he's very opinionated, but I can't help but agree with him most of the time.

No, sorry. No idea. I didn’t even know the channel was down. I don’t really follow russianballetvideos2 because I find that channel toxic. It’s entirely possible that the videos / channel got taken down for copyright violation. That’s what happened to balletflowers and another big channel (can’t remember the name) that was posting videos of the Bolshoi’s performances.

MID-YEAR PROJECT UPDATE! (It’s a long one) YEAH. MID. YEAR. We are halfway through 2020! Just let that sink in for a minute… Don’t know about you, but I feel like time has just been rapidly slipping away. I haven’t been posting a lot of art this year so far but I’ve been busy working on it so I though it was a good time for a project update! First up, the Addicted Animal Series: This year began with the release of the 3rd book in the series “If You Give A Kitty A Cocktail”. The book has been well received so far but it’s release was pretty blunted by Covid. Despite that we are looking forward to Kitty’s convention debut when things get started up again so we can really get the word out! (Tell your friends) In the meantime I’ve been working on the 4th book “If You Give a Dog a Doobie”. I’m about halfway done now and I can tell you it’s going to be one of the best of the 4. Our publisher really wanted us to do another pot related book and I’ll admit I wasn’t super hot about the idea at first because we already did Bear, but Sam Miserendino really made the story shine and took it in a fresh and really funny direction. Dog will be done before the end of the year and I can’t wait to share it with all of you! Next up- Clash Cup Turbo: I get the most questions about this one and don’t worry it’s not going anywhere and it’s more alive than ever. We called the game “done” several months ago and earmarked some features we were working on for future updates so not to delay the release any further. With that I wish I could say next we just have to click the “RELEASE” button but that’s definitely not that easy haha When we set out on this project our primary goal was to release it for consoles in addition to Steam and other desktop services like Itch.io. We knew shooting for a console release was going to be tough especially working on it part time, but it’s taken a significant amount work just to get connected with the proper channels and get setup. I’m happy to say though in the last couple months we finally got on the right track. We are scheduled to submit our first build of the game to Sony’s QA this month. Everything else is in place, so if all goes well and we can stay on top of bug fixes, we are looking at an end of year digital launch on PS4! Unfortunately when it comes to bug fixing I’m pretty useless so send your good vibes to Momin Khan and his genius dev brain to push this thing over the finish line! Comic Strip: I’ve been noodling around an idea for a strip since January, and I’m really excited about it but the question is “How the heck am I going to have time for this?” The answer is I don’t know, but I have a serious itch I need to scratch and that’s getting back to my #1 passion- making comics. I have ideas for the first 10 or so strips fleshed out and I think doing these when I can will be a nice, bite sized way to get me back into to comic and storytelling mode. As I get to these, I will be posting them for sure. Which leads me to my next thing- Graphic Novel: “Why did I decide I want to do this with everything else happening in my life? Isn’t this virtually unachievable with a day job, family, and other projects?” I ask myself that A LOT but this obviously a very long term project and rolls into that whole “I still want to make comics!” thing. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and maybe it’s just a pipe dream, but I kicked it off this year by writing the first chapter and have almost finished thumbnails for it. Sounds like a lot but really it’s about 14 pages. I’m not stressing over it, just letting it form organically. At very least I want to complete the first chapter and put it out there to get some feels on it. Updates on that soon! There’s More! IRS Form 1099 is the IRS form for filing taxes. It is used by companies to report payments made other than salaries, regular wages or tips which are reported through W-2 form. The 1099 form is generated by the payer and must be sent to the payee by January 31st of each year, to reflect transaction amount from the previous year. 

There are many types of 1099 forms, the one used to depend on what the payment was for. 

Who gets the IRS form 1099?

The most common form a company issues IRS Form 1099-MISC. A business is required to fill it out for anyone they have paid $600 or more in a calendar year who is not an employee. For example, if a company has paid 50 different contractors over $600 then they are required to fill out and provide form 50.

The use of FIRE is required by law when a company files 250 or more information returns form for a calendar year. Paper is still an option if you are filing less than 250 forms, however the IRS encourages the use of FIRE for all filers. 

When filing for IRS form 1099, companies must also fill out the form 1096. The form 1096 consists of a summary tax report to show the total number of forms being submitted, total amount being reported and the total tax withheld. 

Form 1099-QA applies to people with disabilities with an ABLE (Achieving A Better Life Experience) account and it must be filed on paper.

Cardano [ADA] updates amidst the two testnet launches

The much-awaited updates concerning with the currency in the community of Cardano [ADA] are finally released this week. Having been scheduled from last week due to the occupancy of the two testnets and their Chief, Charles Hoskinson addressing various technical conferences by representing IOHK and Cardano around the world spreading their vision and presenting their research papers.

Hows the party life in Yale?

It’s okay, I guess. I had a party earlier this year, ‘to start this new year greatly’, but it turned out it wasn’t really that much fun. But my friends are sometimes forcing me to join and they really enjoy it and I love seeing them happy. However I am currently very busy with my study and I want to concentrate on it, so I can’t really party at this moment.

I did enjoy it one time, but when I almost kissed somebody to forget it all, it all came back. So I’d rather avoid it, so the studying is a wonderful distraction.

Do you know anything about Zakharova’s daughter and if she trains at a high level in rhythmic gymnastics and if she’s done any big competitions etc and if Zakharova has ever mentioned plans of putting her into ballet or VBA?

Anna Repina trains at the Irina Viner’s Rhythmic Gymnastics Centre. Let me repeat that, Irina bloody Viner. At the moment, she’s training for five hours a day, six days a week. So, yes, it looks like she’s pursuing the sport professionally and regularly takes part in competitions. I don’t know why she chose sport over ballet for her daughter, but I know that Zakharova loves rhythmic gymnastics, and Anna’s obviously a fan too.

I don’t know a great deal about salaries either, but principal dancers form the Mariinsky and the Bolshoi should be comfortable. Diana is one of the most thought-after dancers in the world, and she’s had a long and extraordinary career, dancing with several companies all over the world. I think it’s safe to assume that she’s accumulated considerable wealth. Plus, she married a very well-off man.

Re the Russians vs Americans with a barre at home - I feel like American dancers do more cross-training, so working out at home might involve other types of exercising and less actual ballet.

Do you know what happened to Margarita Frolova by any chance? Sorry if obscure. I believe she was in the Mariinsky corps a couple years ago. I see people discussing her from time to time on forums and comment sections, but her page on the Mariinsky site doesn’t say whether she is still with them or not.

Sorry, no. I tried looking into her, but there isn’t much info out there and her social media pages are private. She’s still listed in the Mariinsky website though.
