Shout out to @raliciel who posted a really cool piece of art pointing out that the Twins' Sprites from BW (Emmet's specifically) aren't expressive like their BW2 ones.

Their Art made me think about how the Twins were actually designed, and what part of their features actually registered them as 'Emmet and Ingo' rather than two random dudes, especially when drawing fanart and such (and also what made them stick in the mind so well).

It can't just be the smile and frown, because they're still identifiable without them. Can't just be the sideburns either, because everyone has a different opinion on how to draw those too.

I can't figure it out, but I did go in and cannibalize the twins actual art to alter what I think are the initial stand out features to be more generic and see what it did.

The Results of my Experiment:

I just altered the eye shape and the mouths to be neutral, to match a lot of the general pokemon character art. The twins normally have these super interesting eyes that are absolutely flat on top and super rounded on the bottoms, they're actual half circles as opposed to everyone else's either completely round, or rounded rectangle type eyes. Not to mention the amount of whites showing or their size compared to the relative size of their faces. That and the way you can almost always see all of their irises, and their very obvious pupils gives them a super focused stare.

Do I need to talk about the Muppet Men's mouths? No. Will I? Yes.

Their expressions take up their entire lower faces, these guys mouths are drawn maybe three times the size of their character contemporaries. They clearly don't have lips. Maybe don't have teeth. Even their smaller expressions take up most of their faces (hello Ingo's kitten smile from the Manga!) If either of the twins smiled with teeth I think I would run away screaming, it would look terrifying.

They barely have noses. Do they have noses? They do it better than Voldemort anyway.

I personally think it's these factors, added to the side burns, that really makes the twins, but if y'all have a different interpretation that's cool! I'd love to hear what you think makes the twins the twins design wise!

(Yeah this does mean mason fails to flirt with him Paul, half because he knows he's a cryptid ithink. Paul probably turns into a blue minotaur maybe. As for Darlene, she's probably just a super frequent ad mascot)

(the axolotl is called wades! Bc of this change, at the end of the summer Mason doesn't get his memories back immediately- it takes a few months)

Zombies // Gnomes

(I thought flipping the premise of the first episode would be fun, plus, tiny sentient zombies and tall garden gnome like cryptids that kinda stand there sound COOL)

I've really been enjoying @derinthescarletpescatarian 's Child of a Wandering Star, an amazing first encounter story from the POV of the aliens, and the image of an astronaut being read as a baby star-god was so delicious to me so I had to draw the "hatching" scene.

and because im normal i was like well if im drawing the aliens I need to hunt down mentions of their physical appearance so I can know exactly what they look like and model them after real arthropods. obviously

Was pondering how Mark’s rigid ass mask/lens is prob a Budget Thing (since squishy, bendy lens are pretty much a mandate for all hero animated series, like JL, BTAS, TNBA, Spider-Man, etc), and then I was slapped with a vision of Mark in a more JL/BTAS-ish style and I had to see it through.
