"So all of this to say, I’m not wasting a ton of potential. I don’t have an ocean of productivity and accomplishments inside of me that I could easily, effortlessly access if I just sat down 8 hours a day and worked."
Thank you for this--it means so much.
As someone recently diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, one thing that’s been helping me grapple with the intense shame I have over all my “wasted potential” is accepting that potential doesn’t exist and never did.
This sounds so harsh, but please bare with me.
I procrastinated a lot growing up. I still procrastinate today, but less so. And yet, I got good grades. I could write an A+ paper that “knocked [my professor]’s socks off” in the hour before class and print it with sweat running down my face.
I was so used to hearing from teachers and family that if I just didn’t procrastinate and worked all the time, I could do anything! I had all this potential I wasn’t living up to!
And that’s true, as far as it goes, but that’s like saying if Usain Bolt just kept going he could be the fastest marathon runner in the world. Why does he stop at the end of the race??
If ANYONE could make their top speed/most productive setting the one they used all the time, anyone could do anything. But you can’t. Your top speed is not a speed you’re able to sustain.
Now, I’ve found that I do need to work on not procrastinating. Not because the product is better, even, but because it’s better for my mental health and physical health to not have a full, sweating, panicked breakdown over every task even if the task itself turns out excellently. It’s a shitty way to live! You feel bad ALL the time! And I don’t deserve to live like that anymore.
So all of this to say, I’m not wasting a ton of potential. I don’t have an ocean of productivity and accomplishments inside of me that I could easily, effortlessly access if I just sat down 8 hours a day and worked. There’s no fucking way. That’s not real. It’s an illusion. It’s fine not to live up to an illusion.
And if you have ADHD, I mean this from the bottom of my heart: you do not have limitless potential confounded by your laziness. You have the good potential of a good person, and you can access it with practice and work, but do not accept the story that you are choosing not to be all that you are or can be. You are just a human person.

I love using queer for many reasons, but the main one is that it's a big umbrella with room for aspec (and trans) and other identities that aren't my own but I stand with in solidarity. It's a conscious act of seeing our similarities and saying "yes. we are not the same in all ways, but we have the same heart."
reblog if you fully and intentionally are referring to aspec people as well when you use the word queer to refer to the community

[ID: a set of four gifs of Ed and Stede from Our Flag Means Death. The first is Ed diving from the dinghy in 1x8, and the second is Stede diving from the ship in 2x3; his arms flail and he is notably less graceful than Ed. In the third gif, Ed is climbing over the rail of the Revenge, stopping to advise Stede, and in the fourth, Stede (wet and bedraggled) clambers over the rail of the Revenge. /end ID]

Many operas end like Tosca with the sudden descent of the hero to some nether realm. Don Giovanni, however, (as in Zeffirelli's production for Covent Garden), tends simply to disappear amid whirling clouds of stage smoke as the chorus of off-stage demons promise him worse torments below. In Vienna, however, Cesare Siepi ended his admirable interpretation standing on a stagelift which, as so often happens, stuck halfway down, leaving his head and shoulders visible to the audience but not the rest of him. The technicians' efforts merely revealed the operation of one of the great laws governing opera disasters -- that the most that can be hoped for is to restore the status quo ante -- that is, they merely brought him back up again. Siepi then amazed the public by refusing simply to walk off and with courageous professionalism challenged the lift operator to a second attempt. Of course exactly the same thing happened, and amid the shocked silence of the Staatsoper a single voice rang out -- it is said in Italian -- ‘Oh my God, how wonderful -- hell is full.’
Great Operatic Disasters, Hugh Vickers (x)

In 1876, La Scala audiences flocked to see Amilcare Ponchielli's ‘La Gioconda,’ which remained in the repertory. ‘Gioconda’ was adapted from a play by the Frenchman Victor Hugo. On the surface, Ponchielli's opera had many of the traits of French Grand Opéra: nobles of yore committing murder to preserve honor, religious pageantry, a full ballet in the middle of the proceedings. Yet ‘Gioconda’ had an immediacy (some would call it vulgarity) that was a break from previous tradition. The tenor sings one of the most gorgeous arias in the repertory and then blows up an entire ship. When the title character decides to commit suicide, she does not sing of lofty abstract concepts, but walks to the front center of the stage and cries “Suicidio!” at the top of her lungs. The much derided libretto was a miracle of incisive words and phrases that jumped out at the audience, even beyond the classic “Suicidio!” (Best line:“I love him like a lion loves blood!” The final line is another classic of Italian opera: “And furthermore, I killed your mother!”) In fact, there seem to be more exclamation points in the libretto of ‘Gioconda’ than in all other libretti combined.
