I needed a brain cleanse and reset this weekend. I knit but I can knit and think at the same time, so I went for something that needed a little concentration. So I got out my beads and a video tutorial and made a peyote stitch beaded mask lanyard. It took some experimenting to set on the right color combo.

My mother in law made our masks and I wanted to match my favorite. Eventually I went with the solid black, transparent pearl, and silver-lined cobalt. I use beads in my lace knitting so I had plenty to choose from and some of these have been in my drawer for years. I already had beading needles so all I had to purchase were clasps and beading thread.

It took a minute to get in the groove because I haven’t done any peyote stitch in a good while, but it went pretty fast once I got on a roll. I attached some big lobster clasps (because that’s what I could find in a hurry) to the end and now I have something pretty to keep track of my mask when I don’t need to have it on but want to have it handy.

It was exactly what I needed, and now my maker brain is listing all the people I can make one for. I made this one a little over 12 inches; 15 would probably be a little better, and I’d like to get clasps with a swivel at the base. Now that I know I can do it I can work on the details.

~ How To Make Feather Earrings ~

You Will Need :

metal feather charms x 2, 6x4mm crystal rondelle beads, colour 1 x 2, 6x4mm crystal rondelle beads, colour 2 x 2, 8mm metal snowflake spacer beads x 2, 25mm eye pins x 2 and the earring wires of your choice.

Instructions :

1. Thread your beads on to the eye pins in the order shown.

2. Turn a loop at the top of each eye pin using round nose pliers.

3. Add your earring wires to the top loop and your feather charm to the bottom loop of the beaded eye pins using chain nose pliers.

Options :

Substitute the charms of your choice for the feather charms.

Substitute glass pearl, crackle or druk beads for the crystal rondelle beads.

This design is infinitely customisable!
