Roger Troutman (November 29, 1951 – April 25, 1999) was a singer, songwriter, record producer, multi-instrumentalist, and the founder of the band Zapp.
He used the talk box, a device that is connected to an instrument to create different vocal effects. He used a custom-made talkbox—the Electro Harmonix “Golden Throat”—through a Moog Minimoog and a Yamaha DX100 FM synthesizer.
As both band leader of Zapp and in his solo releases, he scored a bevy of funk and R&B hits throughout the 1980s and regularly collaborated with hip-hop artists in the 1990s.
Born in Hamilton, Ohio, he was the fourth of ten children. A graduate of Central State University, his first band was called the Crusaders. His band played in Cincinnati and recorded a single, “Busted Surfboard”/“Seminole”. He formed various other bands with his four brothers, including Little Roger, and the Vels, and Roger and the Human Body. In 1977, he and the Human Body issued “Freedom”, their first single.
He and his brothers were discovered by George Clinton. The original line-up consisted of Troutman brothers Roger, Larry, Lester, and Terry, along with Gregory Jackson and Bobby Glover. Zapp made their professional television debut on the first and only Funk Music Awards show.
He signed with Bootsy Collins and released his self-titled debut ‘Zapp’, which yielded “More Bounce to the Ounce”. The song peaked at #2 on the Billboard Soul Singles chart. The debut album reached the top 20 of the Billboard 200.
In 1981, he cut The Many Facets of Roger, his first solo album. Featuring a funk cover “I Heard It Through the Grapevine”, which went to #1 on the R&B singles chart, the album sold over a million copies. The album featured the hit “So Ruff, So Tuff”.
He became a producer and writer for other artists. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Lady Blackbird - Slang Spirituals EP - bigger arrangements than the stripped-down instrumentation of Black Acid Soul, but her powerful voice remains at the center (there is a full LP out now but it's not on Bandcamp)
In October 2024 Lady Blackbird, producer and guitarist Chris Seefried , Foundation Music Label head and A&R Ross Allen, and Lady Blackbird’s travelling band of Kenneth Crouch (Keys), Tamar Barzilay (drums) and Johnny Flaughers (bass) took a break from extensively touring “Black Acid Soul” to lay down some tracks in Los Angeles. They decamped for a week long recording session to legendary LA studio complex East West (where the Beach Boys cut “Pet Sounds”) to put down tracks that Lady Blackbird and Chris Seefried had been writing whilst on the road… Some magic happened, the bare bones of a record and then some went down. They then moved to analogue whizz Pete Min’s “Lucy’s Meat Market” studio in Highland Park, where synths and strings were overdubbed, taking the basic tracks to the next level and often into outer orbit, with ARPs, Steinways, Mellotron, Hammond B3, Solina, Buchia synth, Bells, Moog, Pump organs, Wurlitzers, Fender Rhodes, Sitars, Clavinet, plus all manner of other cosmic analogue trickery and a string quartet lead by ace arranger Paul Cartwright. The record was taking shape….there was too much music - hence this EP - and it just needed balancing. That job fell to one of the best mixers in the world, Ken Takahashi, a man who engineers and mixes for some of the best around including current production legends Danger Mouse and Inflo.

To say music is a passion of mine is understatment-of-eternety as its one of my biggest loves in my life and here, for you all, are my biggest musical inspirations and yeah, some you may know, some maybe less well known but are still inspirational to me as a wannabe composer-producer-studio only musician!
Tumblr media
Wendy Carlos is seen here in her studio surrounded by the technology she needs to create new compositions on. Note Wendy uses Mac Computers as well as software and varied synthesizers. Note her original Packard Bell computer (yellow mustard colour buttoned one poking out) is still part of her rig. Wendy also designed and made some of the technology like the small mixer behind her middle keyboard as well as various strange e-devices like the Circon controller and she also designed software for her computers to make compositions easier. Wendy Carlos also designed and built her own mixing desk! Wendy Carlos's best known work is 'Switched on Bach' which she originally created using a big MOOG Modular synthesizer, although she reworked it with more modern instruments on an album called "Switched on Bach 2000" she also created ambient music before Brian Eno with her album "sonic seasonings" Wendy Carlos is best known for this 'Switched on' series of albums, although she has created original music for films like the original 1980 Disney computer animated film "Tron"
Tumblr media
Tomita has done music in a similar way to Wendy Carlos, although for his classically inspired work he chose Debussy. Tomita is one who worked with big Moog modular synths to create more 'out of this world' sounds rather than trying to recreate orchestras like Wendy Carlos. His works are original and special. Later in his life he used computers to help create some of his original non classically inspired albums
Tumblr media
Mr Boris Blank (from the group Yello) has been an inspiration to me since the mid 90s with his ability to create warm organic music using synthesizer-samplers like the Fairlight (which he is using in this 1980s picture of him in his Swiss Studio). Allegedly, he has over 1,000,000 Sounds in his sound archive and can select any sound in any of the sound folders in his library. Boris Blank is a 'sound genius'
Tumblr media
Another special musician who inspires my music is Mr Vince Clarke, here seen in a 1980s picture with his friend-producer Eric Radcliffe and a bank of 4 - then popular - Casio CZ 101 Synthesizers and a BBC Micro computer running the U.M.I Sequencer Software which he used after becoming disillusioned by the Fairlight's complicated Page R Sequencer) although Vince now uses Mac Computers and a few software synths, he is well known for his love of Analogue modular synthesizers and keyboards and has a bank of old and new gear in his New York Studio.
Tumblr media
Klaus Schulze is a musician who, later in his career, ditched all the stupidly over used samples and went more classically inspired. He created rhythmically sequenced music and performed his ambient electronic music live for the last time in 2010 before retiring from live performing and he became more a studio only musician. Klaus Schulze is a big personal inspiration to me as a "Wannabe musician"

Ok, if you're knowledgeable about modular synths and/or circuits in general and you have the time to help me troubleshoot unstable pitches on multiple oscillators, I'd really appreciate it. Info below the break due to having a lot of context from prior troubleshooting to go through. So anyway here's the sich:
Behavior:
- Pitch is wobbling back and forth at varying speeds. Sometimes trending upwards, sometimes staying within a certain margin. Usually the wobble is very small (changing at a rate of around 0.1Hz/s) but sometimes its much more noticeable. Even when unnoticeable at first, everything is of course still slowly being detuned over time.
What is exhibiting the behavior:
- Instruo Ts-L
- Pittsburgh Modular Local Parks
- Makenoise Maths (only tested when turned up to audio frequency)
- Moog Mother 32's oscillator
- Moog DFAM's oscillators
Setup:
Local Parks, Ts-L, and Maths have been together in a a Tiptop Audio Mantis, using its built-in power supply and provided power brick. A sticker on the back of the Mantis says "13v", and while the power brick is 12v, it had been working up until now, and did come with the case. The Mother 32 and DFAM have been in their provided cases from Moog, and have been powered via the provided DC adapter. A 4ms Pod64x was used in troubleshooting as well, which has been using its built in power supply and the provided 15v power brick.
Circumstances:
Testing has been done on a Mordax Data. The Local Parks, Ts-L and Maths have been plugged into the same case for some time now. That case has been consistently plugged in but powered off. After several months of hiatus, I booted it up and noticed an audibly unstable pitch. There were several thunderstorms in the weeks prior, resulting in the power going out a couple times. The two Moog simi-modular synths had been unplugged for those several months until I plugged them back in for testing this problem.
Data points from troubleshooting:
(Testing was done using the Mordax Data's tuner and voltage monitor features.)
- Wobble persists after moving the three non-moog modules from the Mantis to the Pod64x, testing together as well as one at a time
- Persists after changing the ribbon cables
- Persists after changing which header in each case they were plugged into
- Persists across multiple power outlets in different areas of the house.
- Persists when testing the Ts-L in an outlet in another house.
- Persists across multiple wave outputs on each oscillator
- The attenuverters on Maths and the "mix" (attenuator) on the Mother 32 both output a constant voltage
- Using the v/oct input transposes the pitch correctly, but the wobble doesnt go away.
- If i let the pitch drift and then power the case off and back on, the pitch will return to its original tuning before the drift
- As emphasis: the two Moog synths were in no way connected to my main eurorack case. Neither by power or patch cables
- Yesterday I tried unplugging the Data, but the change in pitch at the time was too small to be noticable (showed on Data as changing every half second in increments of .01Hz.)
Im kinda at a loss at this point. I asked about it in the r/modular subreddit, and someone said they had the same issue with their Mother 32 when it was underpowered, but i know for sure that the Pod64x and Moog synths are sufficiently powered. I tried two different houses, but they both use the same utility company? If the problem is the utility company for the entire area, I feel like I wouldnt be the first person to learn about this. Idk man im stumped. If anyone has any insight, I'd be really grateful. I just wanna make (in-tune) music again, man.

MARKET DYNAMICS
MARKET DRIVERS
Increasing Adoption in Aerospace Applications to Drive Market Growth
The aerospace industry represents one of the largest application areas for Electro Hydrostatic Actuators (EHAs), with their adoption growing steadily across commercial and military aircraft programs. These actuators provide significant advantages over traditional hydraulic systems, including weight reduction of approximately 30-50%, improved energy efficiency through localized power delivery, and enhanced reliability due to fewer mechanical components. Recent technological advancements in power electronics and servo controls have further improved EHA performance metrics, making them indispensable for critical flight control surfaces like ailerons, elevators, and rudders. For instance, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner utilizes EHAs for its spoiler system, demonstrating the technology’s reliability in modern aircraft architectures.
Industrial Automation Trends Fueling EHA Demand
The ongoing Industry 4.0 revolution is creating substantial demand for high-performance motion control solutions like EHAs across manufacturing sectors. Unlike conventional hydraulic systems, EHAs eliminate the need for centralized hydraulic power units, reducing energy consumption by 40-60% in industrial applications while improving positional accuracy through closed-loop control. This is particularly valuable in precision manufacturing operations such as automotive assembly lines, semiconductor fabrication, and heavy equipment production. The growing emphasis on predictive maintenance capabilities in smart factories further enhances the appeal of EHAs, as their digital nature enables easier integration with Industrial IoT platforms for condition monitoring.
MARKET RESTRAINTS
High Initial Costs and Limited Awareness Impeding Widespread Adoption
Despite their technical advantages, EHAs face significant market penetration challenges stemming from their substantially higher initial costs compared to conventional hydraulic systems. The premium pricing—often 150-200% higher than equivalent hydraulic actuators—creates substantial resistance among cost-sensitive industries. This price differential primarily reflects the complex integration of high-performance servo motors, precision hydraulic pumps, and advanced control electronics within compact EHA packages. Many potential end-users remain unfamiliar with the life-cycle cost benefits that can outweigh the initial investment through energy savings and reduced maintenance overheads.
Technical Limitations in Certain Applications EHAs demonstrate superior performance in medium-power applications (typically 1-50kW range) but face physical constraints in very high-power industrial scenarios exceeding 100kW, where traditional hydraulic systems still dominate. The technology also requires careful thermal management in continuous-duty applications, as heat dissipation from integrated electric motors can challenge packaging constraints. These technical limitations restrict EHA adoption in sectors like heavy construction equipment and large-scale material handling operations.
MARKET CHALLENGES
Supply Chain Vulnerabilities Create Production Bottlenecks
The global EHA market faces mounting challenges from prolonged lead times for critical components, particularly high-performance permanent magnet motors and precision hydraulic components. Many manufacturers report component delivery delays extending beyond 6-9 months due to concentrated supply chains and specialized material requirements. For example, rare-earth magnets essential for high-torque-density servo motors remain subject to geopolitical supply risks. This situation forces EHA producers to maintain inflated inventory levels or redesign products around available components—strategies that erode profitability and delay time-to-market for new applications.
Regulatory Compliance Complexities Certification requirements for EHAs in safety-critical applications involve rigorous validation processes that can consume 18-24 months in aerospace and energy sectors. The lack of standardized qualification protocols across regions further complicates global market expansion efforts. Recent updates to functional safety standards such as ISO 13849 for industrial machinery impose additional verification burdens on EHA manufacturers.
MARKET OPPORTUNITIES
Expansion into Renewable Energy Systems Opens New Growth Avenues
The renewable energy sector presents compelling opportunities for EHA deployment, particularly in wind turbine pitch control systems and hydroelectric plant governors. Modern multi-megawatt wind turbines increasingly adopt electro-hydrostatic pitch systems to replace hydraulic designs, attracted by their higher reliability in harsh operating conditions and reduced maintenance requirements—a critical consideration for offshore installations. Industry estimates suggest retrofitting existing wind farms with EHAs could deliver operational cost reductions of 20-30% over remaining asset lifetimes. Similar benefits are being realized in hydropower applications where EHAs improve grid frequency response through faster governor actuation compared to traditional oil-based systems.
Technological Convergence with AI and Edge Computing
The integration of EHAs with emerging technologies creates transformative opportunities across multiple industries. Embedding AI-powered predictive maintenance algorithms directly into actuator controllers enables real-time wear monitoring and failure prediction, potentially extending service intervals by nearly 40%. The transition to distributed digital control architectures in industrial automation also favors EHA adoption, as their networked interfaces simplify connectivity with edge computing platforms. These technological synergies position EHAs as key enablers for next-generation smart machinery and autonomous systems.
ELECTRO HYDROSTATIC ACTUATOR MARKET TRENDS
Increased Demand for Energy-Efficient Motion Control Systems Drives Market Growth
The global electro hydrostatic actuator (EHA) market is experiencing significant growth due to rising demand for precise motion control systems across industries such as aerospace, energy, and manufacturing. EHAs, which combine hydraulic power with electric motor control, offer superior energy efficiency compared to traditional hydraulic systems—reducing energy consumption by up to 60% in industrial applications. This efficiency is particularly valuable as industries face mounting pressure to meet sustainability targets while maintaining high-performance standards. Recent advancements in servo-valve technology and compact pump designs have further improved EHA reliability, making them attractive for mission-critical applications where precision and uptime are paramount.
Other Trends
Adoption in Aerospace and Defense Applications
The aerospace sector accounts for approximately 32% of global EHA demand, driven by the need for lightweight, reliable flight control systems. Modern aircraft increasingly utilize EHAs for primary flight surfaces because they eliminate complex hydraulic piping while providing redundant fail-safe operation. Military applications are adopting EHAs for unmanned systems and next-generation fighter aircraft where power-to-weight ratios and stealth characteristics are crucial. Recent contracts worth over $1.2 billion for advanced actuator systems demonstrate the defense sector’s commitment to this technology.

ARP Odyssey
Tumblr media
youtube
Tumblr media
