SHORT PROSE | What do you do when the person you value the most says things that tear you apart, but holds your hand like they mean every whisper they make?

It was one thing to be ignored, and another to be torn apart.

Oh, but perhaps it was the same? I could only ponder uselessly as word after word from the person whom I thought I could trust during my moment of vulnerability stabbed deep within my heart. Try as I might, I cannot simply ignore their words nor do I drone them out. They are my most precious person. They are there on my highs and lows, perhaps, with a bit of a dismissive attitude. But who wouldn't be dismissive whenever I tend to focus on myself more?

It was just a... phase. Yes. This is just a phase of theirs whenever I become too much.

Everyone else has them, don't they? People have their bad days, where they ignore or lash out to other people. Things like that do happen, that I know. It just so happened that theirs was a near daily occurrence, and I'm mostly at fault, anyway.

I was not pretty, not social, and most certainly not charming. No, no. I was not any of those. Rather, I was seemingly standoffish, awkward, and self-absorbed. Some of my acquaintances may beg to differ, going as far as pointing out things that made me pretty, funny, or how I can light up the whole room with my laugh—they must be lying. My most precious person tells me sometimes that it was better for me to not be there at all because I ruin the atmosphere with my awkwardness and lack of social grace.

And when everything dies down, when only the two of us are left, they will hold my hand and stare at me with their radiant eyes with something I can't quite name.

"Trust me, I know you best," they'd murmur as they traced patterns on the back of my hand. "Believe me. Nobody cares about you more than I do. You know that, don't you?"

And I find myself nodding at their words, despite the fact that something within me seemed to crumble.
