#raph and mikey are empathic with each other

On the topic of sibling dynamics. Like with Leo and Mikey, I noticed Donnie gets away with doing things that annoy Raph, vs. say if Mikey and Leo did those things, he would argue with them. But Donnie, he doesn’t argue. Like how Leo is much nicer to Mikey, and Mikey is nicer to Leo, while he purposely antagonizes Raph and Don, especially Raph. I used to believe he didn’t like Raph with how much he antagonized him, but I see why he does it, but I still feel bad for Raph, lol. I empathize with him being a middle child myself. My youngest brother got away with everything. If I dared lash out at him, I was the one to blame. So Raph is in a tough spot, especially during season 4. Mikey taking Leo’s side like that while being dismissive of Raph and Don’s feelings had to hurt, and Leo got help for his anger, while Raph got a lecture. At that point, Don was the only one Raph had in his corner since he was getting the same treatment. Remember when Mikey set the battle shell onto the lair? Who did Splinter blame? Don, even though it was Mikey’s fault. I am not bashing, btw. I am just saying Mikey gets away with a lot because he’s the youngest. Sorry for this long essay of an ask lol.
Haha my friend lots of loaded statements in here to unpack!
i think for me personally, ultimately i choose to engage with 2k3 in the manner that their biggest enemies are the Shredder/their own character flaws, and their familial relationships are their emotional rock and not a source of pain (which is very different from how i engage with some of my other fandoms).
eg placing more weight on the show portraying that Leo floated into caretaking/leadership as a turtle simply because he loves his family and that is how he expresses his love, that he clearly trusts and loves each brother and his father throughout the show and thinking of them gives him comfort...instead of reading a pattern of unfair blame and over-responsibility, from that one single time Splinter blamed him for not stopping his brothers from coming to the Battle Nexus.
i strongly suspect that one can read any manner of conflict and pain into any of the brothers in any incarnation, depending on their own history.
After all - no familial relationship is perfect, and those imperfections can be read as proof of deeper pain and conflict.
i've seen ppl say 2k3 Don is neglected and overworked and lonely, or that 2k3 Mikey is overlooked and dismissed and lonely, too. Combined with the ones for Raph and Leo - we could alr say that the entire 2k3 family is full of lonely neglected ostracised brothers..but ultimately that's not the direction i prefer to take for 2k3.
(im an eldest child but consider myself estranged from my sibling)
i don't read malice or resentment in Mikey's relationship with Raph and Don from that interaction. Raph softened toward S4 Leo after Mikey's speech in later episodes - he thought about what Mikey said, and agreed. iirc it was Don in earlyS4 who still remained fairly detached from Leo.
also 'Splinter neglected Raphael's struggles with anger and dismissed his feelings' is a stance im not prepared to take.
I don't think Raphael getting too rough one time with an equally-skilled brother (and there is no trust or respect lost there afterwards with them making up) is the same as literally drawing a live blade (the very same blade you used for killing and the blood feud with the Shredder) AND landing a hit on your own parent - especially in a Japanese family, and for someone of Leo's skill and general control.
There was just no bigger taboo for Leo commit, either as a son or as a martial artist.
Leo was simply out of control, gone much farther away from his natural emotional baseline, and dangerous in a way Raphael never even got close to.
Raphael expresses himself directly and honestly pretty consistently, and he's the one who cries the most - he deals with his emotions far better than Leo was managing to in earlyS4.
People keep saying 2k3 Raphael is angry all the time and so violent/dangerous etc but i just don't agree. He's a lot more level-headed, thoughtful and selfaware than some fans claim.
"Mikey gets away with a lot" -> i think there can be smth to be said for this (esp with that FF episode in which basically Mikey gets a makeup test for chuunin despite apparently 'skipping a whole month of strength training sessions' right before the exam)...but ultimately, with how Mikey is consistently shown to be pulling his weight in fights and how his brothers still trust him with their lives?
im reading that episode as a one-time thing and a product of FF's lighter less-gritty-realistic tone: that the whole family is coming together to give an ultimately-deserving Mikey a lil helping nudge - rather than actually taking it seriously as toxic favoritism 😂
That it is meant as a cute quirk of the family like 'oh everyone is a lil bit softer on the heart of the team' than 'youngest sib gets away unfairly with things just coz they're the youngest', LOL.
(Imagine Leo or Raph or Don skipping a whole month of strength training? Portrayed in the more serious tone of S1-5? Leo would (rightfully) be stripped of leadership. Raph and Don would've been grounded at the very least for their own safety. But i don't think favoritism is the point FF is trying to make, and im choosing to not read it that way haha)
That said - i empathise how hard it can be to see bad-faith takes in the fandom (or even just takes we don't agree with), especially when it hits on painful personal history. i've just stopped engaging with those takes i dun even think abt them at all lmao life is too short for that 😂
Thanks for the ask!

an excruciatingly long ramble about the ‘03 turtles and the enneagram 🐢🧡 pt5 (end)
[ intro + disclaimers post ] [ pt 2 - raph ] [ pt 3 - leo ] [ pt 4 - don ]
mikey, 7 with a 6 wing
intro
we've reached the final entry, lads, but we've still got a lot to talk about. there's also, of course, the chance i might have future things to observe and build on and, if i do, they will be posted and linked as addendums. for now, however? let's blow this popsicle stand.
you might remember way back in the intro post that i said i was excited to talk about mikey because he’s a complicated combination of a lot of moving parts and almost stupidly self-aware. i had a reason i wanted to start this project off with raph and, similarly, i have a reason i wanted to end it with mikey. there’s a chance that some of you might have noticed or caught on, and i’ll give you a moment to think about it.
done? okay cool.
mikey’s 7 is linked to each of his brothers. all three of them have a 7 somewhere in their enneagram web:
raph has a 7 wing. leo’s security number is 7. don’s stress number is 7.
mikey and raph share a lot in common, which is why they both get along so well and also butt heads frequently. i think a detail that may contribute to the latter is that their 7 link is in a wing on raph's end. mikey can see and understand where the 7-wing is influencing and coloring raph's core number, but he himself doesn't share an 8 as a wing. so, when it comes to getting what makes raph tick as an 8, mikey may fall a little short. but if mikey allows himself to chill out enough to access his 5, he might even be able to help raph understand his own temper and process his thoughts objectively.
as for the other two, mikey knows how to coax out leo’s playful side and get him to be kinder with himself and relax, shut his inner critic the hell up. mikey can empathize with don when he’s struggling in silence, bring him out of isolation and back to the present. stress and security numbers are stronger ties than a wing (they will always be attached to that core type, whereas the wing may differ), so mikey can see his strengths reflected in leo when leo's healthy and empathize with don's weaknesses when he's going through a dark spot. mikey would also have a taste of what it's like to live with an inner critic (leo's 1), and be capable of stepping back, slowing down, and being more open to clarity, innovation and insight (don's 5).
bare basics of the 7
7s are one of three assertive types (the others being 3s and 8s), and they’re members of the head triad (made of 5s, 6s, and 7s).
to reiterate: members of the head triad are concerned with anxiety; they carry a great deal of fear and are driven by it. they feel they experience a lack of support and guidance, and because of this they often engage in behaviors they believe will enhance their safety and security. they take in and relate to the world through the mind, and they tend to think and plan carefully before they act.
i’ll also mention again what i said about assertive types in raph’s post: assertives can be described as moving 'against people’. they respond to stress or difficulty by building up, reinforcing, or inflating their ego; they will expand rather than back down or seek protection. assertive types will often have issues processing their feelings.
unlike the previous posts, i think we need to pause here in the basics section for a second. because this is where mikey is different than his brothers.
if you look back to mikey's brothers, each of them have their core number in one triad but their wing in another: raph is in the gut triad, but has a head wing; leo is in the gut triad but has a heart wing; don is in the head triad, but has a heart wing. mikey, however, is fully in the head triad. but wait!: there’s more.
his brother’s core numbers and wings are all the same ‘type’: raph being an 8w7 means he’s fully an assertive type; don being a 5w4 makes him fully a withdrawn type; leo being a 1w2 makes him fully a compliant type. mikey, however, is a 7w6, which makes his core type assertive, but his wing compliant. so while his core number might cause him to inflate his ego, expand rather than back down, his wing’s influence could soften that or even nullify it. remember that compliant types like to be in service of the people around them and move toward others, and they have internalized principles and other dictates they've learned from childhood.
something else i’ve noticed while working on this project is that every triad has one type that seems like they don’t belong in their triad by surface-level observation. 9s are in the anger and gut triad, yet they’re peacemakers, think before they act, and are 'fine' with discomfort so long as everyone around them is happy. 3s don’t appear to be engaged with their feelings despite being in the heart and feeling triad, and they often struggle to connect with those emotions as well as their own identity. 7s are in the thinking and head triad, seeming to be carefree, joyful, and spontaneous in a triad so concerned with fear and anxiety. but where 5s externalize that fear and 6s internalize it... 7s forget it. or, they sure do try to.
a 7’s basic fear is being deprived or trapped in pain
their basic desire is to be happy, satisfied, and to find fulfillment
they believe they’ll be okay so long as they get what they need
childhood take-aways
y’all know the drill. let’s visit that quote from master splinter one final time.
“your path in life will not be an easy one. the outside world will not be a friendly place for you. you four are different in ways the surface dwellers would never understand. to survive, you must master these skills i teach you: the powers of stealth and secrecy. you must become kage, shadow warriors, and you must never be discovered by the outside world.”
it’s not uncommon for a 7’s childhood to be colored by an unconscious feeling of disconnection from their protective and/or nurturing figures, and in response to this 7s choose to nurture themselves. there’s a wide variety of reasons for this perception: another sibling came along and required attention, or there was illness in the family, or the family is living paycheck to paycheck and the protective figures are stressed. but, one way or another, the young 7 unconsciously decides they’re not going to sit around feeling sorry for themselves; if no one will take care of them, they’ll take care of them. this is NOT to say that 7s weren’t close to their protective/nurturing figures, just that on some emotional level they unconsciously decided they had to take care of their own needs.
young 7s will quickly seek out what psychologists call ‘transitional objects’: toys, games, and sometimes playmates. so long as they can find and move toward interesting ideas, experiences, and people, they can repress their underlying feelings of frustration, fear and hurt. where 5s reduce their need to depend on anyone and 6s try to anticipate every possible disaster, 7s create a pain-free world in their mind where they can hang out and think happy thoughts.
like i said back in leo’s post their lives had to’ve been some level of chaos since the word go. master splinter had a LOT to manage and balance and pay attention to, whether it was his own grief/newfound intelligence and change, finding them all a safe environment, or the four boys themselves. we have young leo earnestly doing his best to meet and surpass expectations--going to splinter for advice and approval and more lessons. we have young raph questioning splinter’s authority and glimpses of his temper starting to surface more often. and we have young don choosing to tinker instead of play with his brothers or fully engage in training, and maybe needing a bit more attention during said training because this isn’t the area he’s chosen for his expertise. that’s a lot of attention spread real, real thin. this poor rat is doing his best, man.
while i wouldn’t say this strained or damaged mikey’s relationship with splinter, it wouldn’t surprise me if mikey unconsciously realized he’d need to find the nurturing he wanted elsewhere. much like leo’s 1 would have recognized his protective figure’s responsibilities and expectations, and received them in earnest, mikey’s 7 pulled him toward distractions to better tolerate his own anxiety: toys, trinkets, music, games, comic books, artistic expression. in mikey’s story during tales of leo (s1ep19) we see him wander-dancing around the lair with his headphones on, (allegedly) looking for his gameguy. he pauses to talk to leo, but leo is concentrating and won't engage with him. this leads to mikey deciding to break young leo’s concentration because he, quote: “hates to be ignored”.
mikey as a 7
7s are sometimes nicknamed: ‘the enthusiast’, ‘the generalist’, ‘the multi-tasker’, ‘the wunderkind’, ‘the dilettante’, ‘the connoisseur’, or ‘the energizer’.
7s are masters when it comes to the art of reframing; they can take a bad situation and turn it into a positive light in a blink. it’s a defense mechanism that’s instantaneous, unconscious, and impressive. in his official profile, mikey states that “the other guys seem so down sometimes, they need me around just to lighten things up! life’s a beach!”. heck, there’s a ton of this, here. that happiness is a way of life, life is what you make it, and that "knowing how to take care of yourself in times of trouble is neat... it's like being in a movie”.
if you continue to doubt mikey's place in the thinking/head triad, then you've yet to watch a 7 start to rationalize. should you call them out for acting selfishly or attempt to caution them on making a dumb decision, they’ll defend to the death the reasonableness of their position or provide a million good reasons for doing whatever it is they want to do.
a small example can be found in trouble with triceratons (s2ep2) while the turtles are trying to retrieve honeycutt from the triceratons, resulting in don piloting an alien vehicle while mikey rides sidecar. mikey begins pressing all the buttons--just all of them--and don says “leave the shiny buttons alone, mikey!”. to which mikey responds “but it might be something really good!” (and then he is promptly jettisoned from the car. rest in pieces, king).
a better example could be found in a wing and a prayer (s4ep7). while don, leo and raph are training, mikey's standing by reading a newspaper. leo breaks away from the others to cut through the newspaper in order to get mikey's attention, and he tells mikey. they’re supposed to be training. mikey's quick to say that he is training! he’s doing mental exercises… reading! leo presses “didn’t you learn anything from your battle nexus rematch?”. and mikey has an answer for this, too, in the form of a quote from master splinter about worry, fear and anger... and pin that up on the board--pin it--because we're gonna circle back to that.
much like 8s, 7s don’t like being told what to do. but where an 8 might outright pick a fight with an authority figure, opponent, or leader, a 7 will attempt to manipulate them with charm and charisma. while it wasn't OUR mikey who sweet-talked his way out of sliver's containment in reality check (s3ep19), it was still a version of mikey who pulled it off, and it was our mikey's plan.
7s are crafty lil stinkers. much in the same way they can quickly think to rationalize their wants and behaviors, they will be quick to notice and remember how those around them respond to things, what buttons to press they might need to press to garner the results they want. a prime example of this is his match against raph in the battle nexus.
raph goes into this match confident and eager. he thinks that he’s going to give mikey a life time's worth of get-backs, but… never considers that no one in this tournament knows how to work him like mikey does. ... ... *leans in and lifts microphone closer to my mouth* and we're gonna circle back to that, too.
7s are (for better or worse for those around them) exceptionally bright and quick learners. their minds move fast from one idea to the next, making them fantastic brainstormers and great at synthesizing information; they tend to have excellent mind-body coordination and dexterity. all this can cause them to develop an inflated sense of their own 'giftedness' and cause them to come off as or actually be: arrogant.
i think it’s safe to say that mikey is the most ‘’’naturally gifted’’’ out of the four when it comes to ninjitsu. master splinter draws attention to this in touch and go (s3ep8) when he says mikey has an affinity for the martial arts. but one of the best ‘show-don’t-tell’ examples, in my opinion, can be found in what a croc (s2ep12) where mikey’s the one who holds his ground the longest against stockman’s turtle-bot. and afterward, when they swap weapons, he’s the only one of the four who uses an improvised weapon (two pipes).
it cannot be stated enough times that 7s don’t want to experience unpleasant emotions. sure, no one enjoys feeling frightened, bored, disappointed, sad, frustrated or angry, but emotions like this are downright intolerable for 7s. they want to avoid pain, and they believe they can think their way out of it. things like worry or stress are easier for them to deal with because they can mentally work with them and rationalize a way out, but things like sadness, grief or disappointment are harder. those emotions actually have to be felt to be dealt with. whenever 7s sense they’re getting too close to a painful topic, they might crack a joke or tell a funny story--they're the types who will sneak a wince-worthy pun into a eulogy--anything goofy or distracting to redirect the topic and skirt around those negative emotions. this avoidance can cause them to appear callous or lacking in empathy. mikey? cracking jokes when he “shouldn’t”? maybe coming off as insensitive to the situation around him? more likely than you think.
7s with a 6 wing are sometimes nicknamed ‘the entertainer’. they’re fast-talking, witty, and they're excited by new ideas and highly engaging people with a lot of energy and high spirits. they’re productive, but they can easily lose focus and become scattered. these 7s are sensitive and a bit more anxious than 7w8s, but they’re experts in using charm to disarm. they’re dutiful and loyal to their family and friends, and they’re often funny, entertaining, and highly accepting of others. in healthier states, they’re curious and creative with an excellent sense of humor and a more positive outlook on life than a 7w8. they’re quick-thinking, have cooperative spirits, and organizational abilities that enable them to accomplish a great deal with little effort.
stress & security numbers
mikey’s stress number is a 1, so in times of high stress and downed spirits he’ll begin exhibiting the negative traits associated to 1s. stressed 7s become pessimistic, argumentative, and judgmental. more and more, they’ll begin blaming others around them for their problems, and their thinking will become more black-and-white. they’ll begin to feel the need to restrain themselves but then become frustrated with the structures and limits, and their usual vivaciousness may give way to a grim seriousness.
what enthusiasm they had for their own ideas and opinions will quickly shift into a tendency to critique the views of others; they might become short, impersonal, and impatient--with both themselves and others--attempting to 'teach' those around them why their ideas and opinions are better or correct. and under high stress, their underlying resentment will begin to show. they might begin scolding, nitpicking, and cutting down those around them with withering, sarcastic comments, and they'll adopt a 'hit-and-run' approach to conflict.
the examples of mikey’s 1 could include:
in tales of leo (s1ep19) after mikey finishes telling his story and raph says “if you ask me, leo’s not coming back because he’s afraid”, mikey--quite literally--180s on him and retorts “no one asked you!”
in return to the underground (s2ep13) mikey says don's plan to get the crystal moon back up came from "whackos-r-us", and toward the end when they’re all webbed up and surrounded by monsters, he mocks don and “his big ideas” and does a nasally impression of him
his behavior in most (if not all) of same as it never was (s3ep21); the way he snaps at don right out the gate is radiating with a 1’s anger and, more notably, resentment
in grudge match (s4ep6), he makes a very pointed dig at raph when challenged about his status as the battle nexus champion; i’ll touch on this a bit more later
mikey’s security number is a 5, so when mentally and spiritually healthy he’ll begin to show the positive traits associated with 5s. these 7s grow more comfortable with silence and solitude and are willing to be more serious; they begin to think about the meaning and purpose of their lives. an 'average' health 7 might be creative, but a secure 7 no longer wants to just consume, they want to contribute. 7s on the positive side of a 5 can finally experience satisfaction in the truest sense of the word.
they learn to slow down and quiet the activity in their minds so impressions affect them more deeply, and they become able to stay with their observations and experiences long enough to realize all the amazing things about themselves and the world around them. they can recognize which experiences have real value to them. rather than worry about making the wrong choices or missing out on the best--most exciting--course of action, 7s will simply know what to do. it doesn’t cause 7s to lose their spontaneity or enthusiasm, they just become more free to savor the moment. as 7s learn to quiet their minds and tolerate anxiety that arises, they can access the clarity, innovation, insight, and knowing qualities of a healthy 5.
examples of mikey’s 5 surfacing could include
in the unconvincing turtle titan (s1ep12) after watching the silver sentry interview at the end, while his brothers are asking questions, you can see him just kind of quietly basking in the moment instead of hyping himself or the moment up
in contrast to dipping into his 1 throughout return to the underground, while they’re on their way back home mikey pauses to take a moment to let don know “he may be a pain in the shell, but i’m proud that you’re my bro”. (this back and forth reaction to don's decisions/plans could also be his assertive type expanding in defense early on only for his compliant type to fall back to childhood lessons in doing the right thing, recognizing and appreciating that they've done that here)
in christmas aliens (s3ep1) it’s his idea to go to the children’s home, granting others an exciting and warm holiday experience rather than being concerned with his own. contributing, not consuming.
in grudge match (s4ep6) he takes the time to seek leo out at the end of the episode and thank him
there is an aspect of his 5 surfacing in what he says about leo in samurai tourist (s4ep13) but i hesitate to say that his 5 is fully in the driver’s seat; i’ll get to it when we get there
cardinal sins - 7 and gluttony
once again, as with raph and with don, mikey’s cardinal sin is more than its surface-level explanation. yeah, he eats a lot and enjoys food, but… who doesn’t? i, also, would like pie.
7s embody sunshine and joy and a boundless love for life, always curious, always excited about the next thing to come. but if you scratch those surface appearances off, you’ll find an almost desperate need to avoid pain. the cardinal sin of gluttony isn’t so much about mikey’s passion for pizza as much as it is a need to devour positive experiences, stimulating ideas and fine material things in order to avoid suffering, hurtful memories, or feelings of deprivation. 7s cope by gorging themselves. they jam their calendars with activities and adventures to look forward to, absorb interesting ideas and stories, collect material possession--all in an attempt to fill up an inner emptiness with items and experiences. we all have our ways of defending against pain, and for 7s it’s keeping things lively and positive. they must have more, so they never run out.
one of my books state that 7s are often caught in a cycle of anticipation known as 'the chocolate syndrome'. one of the most exciting things about a box of chocolates is the anticipation of the first bite (you never know what you're gonna get inside, after all). it's often less the experience itself that excites 7s, it's the anticipation OF that experience. a small example of this could be found in the lesson (s3ep13) when young mikey is teaching casey about the importance of having a battle-cry. he hypes up how having a good battle-cry will get foes to flee like cowards, and before casey even has a chance to respond, mikey exclaims "oooOOH, i really wanna see that!! come on, let's try it!". the payoff of this is, obviously, not great. but it didn't lessen the thrill of getting there.
unfortunately, due to their cardinal sin, 7s have a tendency to be the most vulnerable to some form of addiction, both due to their love for anticipation and need of escaping negative feelings. i see a lot of people going to raph when it comes to this topic (especially in terms of substance abuse), i guess because he’s the “problem child”? and his 7 wing might open a vulnerability to that but for the most part… eh. mn.
i bring this subject up in regards to mikey, however, because we actually have a brief example of it in-series.
in the big brawl - part three (s2ep25), raph and mikey pass gennosuke while wandering the battle nexus market. gen is a gambler (it thus needs be remarked that gambling can be as much an addiction as a substance), and he asks them if they want to place a bet on him winning the tournament. raph immediately turns him down and tells him to “find some other sucker” while walking away… but mikey hangs back and asks what the odds on himself are. once he gets those odds he says “i gotta get in on that action!” and asks raph to help him out. raph proceeds to grab mikey by the arm, tell gen to fuck off a second time, and physically removes mikey from the interaction. you might remember me saying back in raph’s post that raph, being an 8, might be the most ‘world-wise’ out of the four. he sees this for what it is, what it could be, and he’s gently peeling mikey away from it.
and as before, let’s look at the other sins in the circle. mikey’s 6 wing, 1 stress and 5 security would give him: fear*, anger, and greed respectively.
*i mentioned in raph's post that seven of the enneagram’s cardinal sins are in line with the traditional ‘deadly sins’; 3s and 6s are the exceptions, with 3’s cardinal sin being deceit and 6’s being fear.
same as it never was with a touch of darkness within
before we dive in, let’s pause to examine 7s at their healthiest and unhealthiest. at their healthiest, 7s can be described as: joyful and satisfied, anticipating and enthusiastic, realistic and productive. at their unhealthiest, 7s can be described as: insatiable and escaping, manic (depressive) and reckless, overwhelmed and paralyzed.
mikey is kind of unique throughout the series in that we don’t really get a lot of heavy episodes with him that would latch onto his more stressed state of mind and drag it out. at least, not in the way that we do with his brothers. sainw, unsurprisingly, is when we get to see a version of mikey in his worst state, and i think there’s a lot of interesting things to examine here with his enneagram type in mind, one of which will carry into the next section.
right off the bat, something to notice about sainw!mikey: he is the ONLY person who doesn’t greet our don warmly. april hugs don. raph also hugs him (that 2 shooting to the surface for a split second). leo’s smiling widely, and he sounds relieved. but mikey? it’s "where the shell have you been?? how could you just abandon us like that?!". it's instantaneous, and he doesn't hesitate to take it a step further, because the first thing he decides to do after is take don to master splinter. that's exactly how he words it, too: "i'm taking you to master splinter". ...--like, i need you to realize how cold of a move this is in hindsight. because script-wise, it's obviously there to do an emotional reveal not just to don but also the audience. but in character context?
this master splinter died after don disappeared. which could mean that his death is information sainw!don doesn't have. but whether it’s our don or sainw!don it doesn’t matter, because mikey presents this information to don much like you drop a bucket of ice water on someone. he takes him to splinter’s grave. it’s not gentle, it's not kind, it’s harsh. as though to say: you left, the team didn’t work, and look what happened. i want you to look at it.
as i said in the stress section--as well as back in don’s post--mikey is leaning hard into his 1. the gang's all here: we got cutting remarks, we got 1’s cardinal sin in anger (resentment), we got blame, we got grim seriousness. i think we can go a bit deeper into the fact that don ‘abandoned’ them, too. for that, we need to look to the darkness within (s3ep14).
jenn (@/plantdonut) brought this to my attention a while ago; i don’t remember the context of the conversation, and i’ve searched our discord chats to no avail--i can only assume she mentioned it during a call. but her point stuck with me, and it will be heavily pulled from in the next paragraph.
mikey’s nightmare in the darkness within features leo joining the lovecraftian entity and attacking him. looking at the themes of each of their nightmares: don’s centers on loss and helplessness, leo’s was about failure, and raph’s was giving into his worst self. mikey’s seems to be about betrayal. it’s an interesting one, because i don’t think the boys have really experienced real betrayal up to this point. their companions have always been their companions, and the people who have 'turned on them' to some degree never fully gained their trust in the first place. but what’s one of the things mikey seeks out when he needs distractions? comic books. superhero comic books. a genre where betrayal is almost laughably frequent and expected to the point of parody. the concept of being betrayed by someone you trust or love is no doubt hovering around in mikey’s subconscious. he already thinks of himself and his brothers as superheroes--he IS a superhero. so, here in this nightmare, he’s experiencing his first "real" betrayal.
and it's not lost on me that... out of the four of them who almost joined the foot? leo. leo’s the one mikey’s having the nightmare about.
take this knowledge and move back to sainw. don disappearing on his family, in a time when mikey needs him most? …that’s a betrayal. sainw!mikey’s world is not only crumbling around him, but if we were to assume that his deepest fear is the same as our mikey’s, then his worst fear has also come true: someone close to him who he loves has betrayed him. don left. the team didn't work anymore. splinter died. raph and leo separated, they "aren't with anyone" anymore.
i think the only smile we get out of sainw!mikey is after don pleads to leo and raph to help him, and leo and raph shake hands. just this... brief blink-and-you-miss-it smile. it's so fleeting.
sainw is probably the most blatant example of mikey’s 1 being active, but there is one specific example we get with our mikey.
mikey beat raph that one time aaaaand uuuh--
originally this was going to be a part of the season four discussion, but it became its own thing. i don’t think i’ve ever seen anyone really take note of this, let alone acknowledge it, either. but me sitting here and putting everything through an enneagram filter while rewatching episodes made a light go off.
for starters, i need to reiterate what i said back in raph's post in the season four section: i don't agree with master splinter when he says that all of the boys except leo have healed from their wounds after defeating the shredder. i know what was more a script-thing to emphasize the journey leo's going on, but i really need to restate that i think all of the boys are on the unhealthy end of their enneagram spectrums. their stress numbers are present and active, and this is going to be one time, i think, we see our mikey lean into his. with intent.
grudge match (s4ep6) feels like the episode where the change in leo’s demeanor is beginning to have an actual effect on the family unit. the first three episodes of the season were more an adjustment and ‘’’healing’’’ period in their post-shredder lives, the fourth was leo and casey, and the fifth episode we can see leo's change isn't going away but the 'ripple effect' hasn't quite kicked in yet. it's grudge match when raph begins confronting leo on his shift in attitude and don remarks on the increased intensity of the training.
between the end of the battle nexus arc (s2ep23-26) and grudge match, mikey will sometimes boast about being the battle nexus champion (as is his god given right), and i think it's fair based on dialogue and his family's reactions that he does it off-screen, too. but.
the only time (i'm pretty frickin sure) he brings up that he beat raph is at the very, very end of the last battle nexus episode (s2ep26) and right here in grudge match. it’s no secret that mikey enjoys playfully antagonizing his brothers from time to time, and that he has a tendency to target raph with shenanigans and teasing. but the exchange in grudge match, both due to context and the energy feels… different.
at the end of the big brawl - part four, raph says mikey won on a technicality. to which mikey responds "um. TECHNICALLY, i kicked your sorry butt in one of the bouts. remember?". the energy and body language behind it is much more passive, playful and, overall, good-natured. raph doesn’t respond to it well and tackles mikey to the ground (this would be the first time leo and don are learning this specific information as well), but i think it’s safe to say the remark from mikey was meant to be more competitive ribbing than it was anything else. in grudge match, though?
before this exchange even happens, raph’s temper is already set off--he’s not starting from a more neutral, calm state like he did at the end of the big brawl. leo's insistence on more intense training has him heightened, angry, and wound up. mikey uses his win as a reason to blow off training, and this just fans the flame. raph challenges mikey's status as the battle nexus champion and states he won on sheer, dumb luck. and when mikey says “well, if i remember correctly, i beat YOU fair and square”, he doesn’t just physically lean in once, he leans in twice and that second lean is to emphasize the 'you'. we don’t get to see how raph responds because master splinter interjects, but given that immediately following mikey’s remark don visibly winces, states “ooh i don’t wanna see this”, and removes himself from the space? i think it's fair to say the result would have been... explosive.
8s are competitive. and when it comes to their competitive nature, it’s important to remember they hate losing more than they love winning. winning is good because it cements their capability, but losing is awful because it risks affirming their basic fear. 8s believe they'll be okay so long as they are strong and in control of their situation. i think raph’s feelings toward his loss go beyond just the fact that he lost to mikey. it’s less that he lost to mikey… and more how he lost to mikey. because mikey beat him not by out-fighting him, but by drawing out raph's temper and letting it get the better of him, wear him out, and ultimately be his own undoing. in a way, raph didn't lose to mikey, he lost to himself. and he did that publicly. this wasn't in the privacy of his own home during a training session, or a one-off with some purple dragons in a dark alley-way. this was public. with thousands of eyes watching. when he realizes he lost in that episode, raph says the line "i'll never be able to live with myself!" and while it's most likely dramatics, i feel like there's just the smallest sliver of truth to it. the fact it was mikey, at the end of the day, doesn't really matter. he lost agency to his temper again.
i’m bringing all of this up to say that: given the atmosphere of ‘the room’, raph’s already heightened state… this was a very bad time to dig the knife in, and mikey did it anyway. much like sainw!mikey chose to break the news of splinter's death to don in a harsh way, mikey’s choosing to defend his status in a harsh way. this could easily be an example of that 'hit-and-run' tactic i mentioned in the stress section; mikey's hitting raph with something he knows will further set him off, possibly as a way to redirect his family's frustration with him onto someone else. but, master splinter sees through it. he interjects and keeps attention focused on mikey before raph has the chance to explode.
now. i think it’s more than fair to say that mikey would know raph hates losing and that his temper is a strategic weakness, considering their fight in the battle nexus showcased he knew exactly how to work raph into being his own worst opponent, defeating him without even touching him. but remember at the beginning of the post where i said there's a bit of a disconnect between them, as their only link in the 7 is through a wing rather than a core number?
mikey may know that this is a dig at raph, but it is possible he doesn't know how deep it runs or that raph losing his temper isn't JUST a strategic weakness, it's directly tied to an 8's fear of being controlled/losing control. mikey may not know it was a bit more targeted than he intended it to be, but he doesn't pause or slow down to consider this. the 5's not here right now, the 1 is.
the first half of season four, for the last time
i’m certain there’s already been some observation about mikey and leo’s relationship throughout the first half of season four, and how--out of the brothers--mikey is the most attentive toward leo’s shift in attitude. it’s also interesting to see mikey’s assertive core and compliant wing sort of swing back and forth. i’m both going to talk about mikey’s interactions with leo, here, but toward the end, also his interactions with raph.
as discussed in raph’s post, in cousin sid (s4ep1) raph at first responds positively to leo’s shift in attitude and goes as far as to make a joke he probably shouldn’t have (ye ol' 7 wing). leo turns on him, but mikey gets between them and shuts the interaction down before it can become anything bigger. and, be it for leo’s benefit or his own, he takes charge of getting raph somewhere he won’t be a danger to himself.
in the people’s choice (s4ep2), mikey’s the one who pauses when he notices leo’s not following them to the mill and asks if he’s coming or not. it's a small moment, but he wanted leo to be included in their fun adventure.
as i said in leo’s post, we get a great exchange between leo and mikey in grudge match. to reiterate the exchange:
leo: …no. like pushing yourself beyond your limits. to a place where there are no limits. to be so focused, so ready that nothing and no one will ever catch you off guard again! mikey: um. …we still talking about me, here?
7s will do almost anything to avoid engaging in painful emotions, so when mikey picks up on the fact that leo’s projecting he points it out indirectly. leo doesn’t engage with this observation… so, mikey defaults to making a joke that he could still forfeit. but, as with this episode feeling like the first time leo's shift is shown to have a ripple effect on the family, i think this is the episode where mikey starts to engage with this shift. both in regards to leo and to his brothers.
in wing and a prayer, as i said earlier, leo tries to tell mikey that they need to train so that they’re ready for anything. mikey retorts by quoting master splinter... kind of:
“worry leads to fear. fear leads to anger. anger leads to worry. …--no, hold on. fear leads to anger. anger leads to hate. hates leads tooooo… a dark and moody leo”.
that pesky 7 of his is once again preventing him from communicating directly, but i do think mikey is trying to communicate here. and not JUST to leo. don and raph are also present, and raph even steps into frame as mikey finishes talking. they are, unfortunately, interrupted. and i hope all those pigeons are okay.
in dragons rising (s4ep10) while leo’s training at the beginning of the episode, he has a brief interaction with mikey (and klunk). mikey tries to ask him “how's it going?” but leo doesn’t respond and carries on. mikey then turns to klunk and states that “leo’s mister personality these days” and that “he’s getting tired of it, himself”. this could be his core's assertive type at play. it's expanding a bit, pushing what leo's going through away for mikey's own protection. but toward the end of the episode, after leo chews them all out and storms off, we see raph, casey and mikey in the back of the battleshell. raph verbally expresses agreement with leo, and mikey… kind of nods. i think he not only listened to leo, but also took raph’s acknowledgement/agreement into consideration. i think raph and mikey value each other's opinions a lot more than they let on. we have direct evidence of mikey looking up to raph (he asks himself "what would raph do?" in christmas aliens), and i'll get to raph in a second. back to mikey's handling of leo.
in all hallows thieves (s4ep12), mikey makes a leo-o-lantern. he could be trying to make leo laugh or smile or just… tap into the nostalgia that comes with halloween for them, but he doesn’t get much of a response.
when we finally reach samurai tourist (s4ep13), we have a small collection of things that have happened: mikey has acknowledged leo was projecting onto him in grudge match, mikey has potentially tried to communicate leo’s position and mental state to the other three in wing and a prayer, and mikey has now heard leo express his frustration that they keep losing and that he feels like the rest of them are treating it like it’s all a game. meanwhile, raph is still keeping leo at an arm’s length and is fighting with him and don still seems to be choosing not to engage with leo if he can avoid it.
at the start of the episode, raph and casey discuss leo's behavior. raph's irritated, and casey's treating the whole thing quite flippantly. likely getting antsy about the direction the conversation's heading, mikey makes an attempt to derail it: he jokes that he COULD be training, but it's free comic book day. ...it doesn't work, though. and the conversation continues. as the camera jumps around, mikey starts to look a little irritated, and this time he speaks up for real:
i think all of you should just lay off the poor guy. i mean, it can’t be fun. always being the responsible one? and we’re the ones who really benefit! raph’s free not to think because leo does all the thinking for him. don’s free to dream. and i’m free to take it easy! all because leonardo is busy being responsible enough for all of us!
i hesitate to say that mikey's 5 is doing the driving because he’s not slowing down to engage with his OWN negative and painful emotions. this is much more his 1 at play, taking the moment to 'teach' the others (and even if it is being triggered from an unhealthy state, he's right). it could also be a bit of that 6 wing, that compliant type, trying to be more directly 'in service' to leo rather than tap-dancing around the problem in wing and a prayer.
he acknowledges that the position leo’s in “is not fun”, which is a simple but important line coming from him because 7s will FLOCK toward anything 'fun' in order to avoid pain. this is a way of saying he knows leo’s in a lot of pain, and he then points out how each of them are benefiting from leo’s responsibility (including himself is some of his 5 engaging, as he’s at least embracing some of this guilt rather than denying it by virtue of expressing it).
unfortunately, we don't get to see the other two engage with this because leo pierces raph’s punching bag with his sword and raph starts to have an outburst. but this moment is also kinda interesting.
mikey shouts “easy, raph!” and helps casey hold him back, but don... doesn't do anything. i know he wasn’t standing close to raph, but we've seen him cross spaces in order to help hold raph back in the past. him choosing to remain where he is (and it's not that he's not animated, he puts his bo staff back in his belt) could be that continued choice to remain distanced and disengaged from this entire ~thing~. i think it’s also worth noting that raph’s 5 is active and, in piercing the sandbag, leo just broke one of raph’s resources. might help explain his aggressive reaction.
moving forward from samurai tourist, i mentioned back in raph’s post that there's a shift after mikey shuts their conversation down with how raph responds to leo’s behavior. i think, given that he values mikey's perspective and opinion, he took what mikey said to heart even if it is kind of too-little-too-late.
mikey calls leo’s outburst in the ancient one (s4ep14) before it happens, stating that he thinks “the cork’s about to pop on that unopened bottle”. this is followed by raph calling leo 'a hot-head' and stating that he hates it when leo reminds him of himself (a much gentler observation and description than saying "leo's gone mental"). …and right after this, we get a parallel to meet casey jones (s1ep4), with leo striking master splinter in place of raph attacking mikey. ( idk where else to put this, but while mikey, raph and don are outside splinter’s room listening to splinter and leo talk, and they turn to look at each other uncertainly? mikey looks to raph.)
after the efforts in samurai tourist, it’s kind of sad to see how mikey refers to leo in scion of the shredder (s4ep15). it would seem that compliant type has stepped back, and the assertive type is at the front of things again. where raph refers to leo as “a bum” (again, much gentler terms than we were getting before), mikey’s the one who asks if leo’s going to come back “normal… or, like… MORE normal. because before he left, he was acting kinda… y’know” and he draws a coo-coo next to his temple. raph promptly smacks him for this. leo attacking master splinter may have not only driven up mikey’s 1 (scathing remarks and judgemental views are active) but also woke up that fear of betrayal.
i dunno. it’s just interesting to see that AFTER mikey brought attention to where leo’s head is at, raph started to back off. and after leo took a step too close to something mikey’s afraid of, mikey’s quick to retreat back into old habits and--for the first time since this arc started--starting to throw insults in leo’s direction (and insults in the same line raph was taking from, no less). that compliant type might have been willing to step forward before and do a service to leo by bringing awareness to his condition… but now the assertive core has moved back into place, expanding to keep danger and pain away.
conclusion
as mentioned in part 1, the two books i referenced and heavily pulled from in the more enneagram-focused sections of this project (the parts where the enneagram itself is explained rather than how it applies to the turtles) were:
the wisdom of the enneagram by don richard riso & russ hudson
the road back to you by ian morgan cron & suzanne stabile
bro i straight up do not know how to top this off. i can’t believe i’m finally done with this after over a year and a half of working on it. <xD absolutely wild. and i just wanna thank anyone who took the time to read all of this, who left me something nice to say, and/or who shared it around. i really, really appreciate it. it’s obviously been a lot of work.
as i’ve said throughout the other posts, should i return with more things to say i’ll make addendums and link them along as i go. but for now: it’s been fun! time to return to art and fic writing. but later. because i'm braindead as all hell right now.

*comes into ask how with a shaky smile*
Howdy there Hon. I hope the New Years been treating you alright so far, and I wish that it will continue to bless you with the goodness you deserve ✨🧡
Sorry to bother your inbox again, but this is “Independent Woman” from a request a couple weeks ago and I've had kind of a rough day, and your writing always makes me smile.
If it's not too much to ask, may I request a follow-up on that prompt please? How the Bayverse/Rise boys would react to their stubbornly independent SO having a rough day to the point that they cave and ask for cuddles?
No stress, no worries if you're not in the mood for it. I totally understand. Please take care of yourself first and foremost! Please drink water and know you are appropriated! 🧡✨
howdy anon-chan! 🧡
i'm so sorry that you've had a rough day. i hope at this point it's going a little better and that you're able to get the rest you need. there's a quote that i like to think about when i'm having a rough time: "Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says I'll try again tomorrow." -Mary Anne Radmacher
anyway, i hope this helps you smile!
(here's the other post)
Leonardo
Leo has been waiting for (hoping for, praying for) this, for you to come to him in your time of need. He feels bad, he doesn't actually want you to have a bad time or a rough day, but at the same time he loves to be needed. He already has a plan in place.
Mikey scampers off at his signal, and Leo escorts you to his room. There he encourages you to get under the covers and mess up his bed however you need to in order to get comfy.
Then he climbs in with you and holds you. He doesn't ask about what's wrong, doesn't try to talk to you about anything. He can tell that isn't what you need right now.
Mikey comes in (quietly for once) with some tea. He sets the tray down on the bedside table and smiles at you before quickly leaving. Leo tells you that the tea is there if you want it, then goes back to quietly holding you.
You realize, after laying in his arms for a while, that he is meditating. You try to match your breathing to his, and you see a small smile steal across his face when he feels what you are doing. You fell right into his trap.
The two of you breathe in sync for a while, just soaking in each other's presence.
If you decide to talk about it, Leo listens very closely to you. He's not confident that it will happen, but he hopes that you'll tell him if it's something he can help with. No matter what though, if you just need to vent or need advice or need him to do something for you, he will respect your wishes.
Raphael
Raph's first instinct is to find out who hurt you so that he can go take care of them. Fortunately, he goes with his second instinct, which is to bundle you in his arms and carry you to his room.
Once there, he climbs into bed and rearranges the two of you until you are both comfortable. He makes sure you are completely covered with him, his strong hands rubbing your back. "I've got ya sweetheart. What do ya need?"
Raph isn't quite confident in his ability to comfort you, so he does need some guidance. But once you let him know what you need, he's on top of it.
If you just want to curl up on his plastron and be held, he will stay with you as long as you need. He will rub your back. He will be your own personal weighted blanket. Gentle touches or rough hugs, hell if you need him to distract you he will. Anything for you.
(Raph finds that he wants to give you the gentle touches. He wants to hold you gently, he wants to show you softness. But if that's not what you need, he'll just have to talk to you about it later. This ain't about him.)
If you want to talk about it, if you need to vent, Raph'll listen. He'll empathize. He might growl or mutter as you talk, but he won't interrupt. If you want advice, he'll do his best to give it to you.
Anything you need, he'll get it for you. Drink, food, more pillows? It's there almost before you ask for it. You won't have to lift a finger or do anything if you don't want to. "I'll take care of you princess."
Donatello
Donnie immediately has so many questions, but he sets them aside. You asked him to help you learn how to be cared for, so he's going to do just that.
He takes to the lab, because the bed there is comfier than the one in his room. He puts on some music you like and turns down the volume. He encourages you to climb in and climbs in behind you. He lays down and lets you climb on him however you want.
Once the two of you are comfortable, he asks if you want to talk about it. He realizes that you need to be guided into asking for what you want, and he's prepared to do that. Your answer is the beginning of the mental flow chart Donnie created specifically for caring for you.
If you do want to talk about it, Donnie first asks if you want advice or if you just want to vent. Once that's established, he is an active listener. He asks questions and gives you nudges if he thinks you need it. He'll make those snarky comments that make you laugh. He checks in periodically to make sure that you're still okay. Talking to Donnie will always make you feel better.
If you don't want to talk about it, that's okay too. He'll ask if there's anything you need, then send the drone to zap Raph into getting it for you. Once Raph is gone (rubbing his arm and muttering murderously), Donnie settles in for a nice long cuddle session with you.
If you're okay with it, he pulls up some work. He asks if you want a distraction, and if so he'll start telling you about what he's doing. Donnie works with one hand while the other absentmindedly rubs your arm. He still checks in every once in a while to make sure you're okay and ask if you need anything.
Michelangelo
Mikey, much like Leo, hates that you're upset but is so happy that you came to him so he could care for you. This is a huge step, you're making progress! Now it's his turn to make progress, to show you how he can care for you.
He asks if you need anything first, so he can grab it without interrupting the "epic cuddle session" you're about to have. (Later, when you ask him to get you something, he'll interrupt the cuddle session anyway with zero complaints. He just wants you to be happy.)
Once that's all taken care of, he hustles you off to his room, hand on your back. Thank the pizza gods that Leo had forced him at sword point to clean it the day before. You both get in bed and get comfy.
He holds you as if you are a treasure, a beloved teddy bear. It is hard to believe that Mikey can be this gentle. He wraps you in blankets and props you up with pillows until you are surrounded in softness and him.
Then he starts to talk. He chatters on about anything and everything, whatever comes to mind. His skateboard tricks, their latest encounter with the Foot, Raph breaking his most recent lifting record... you are caught up on ALL the turtle gossip.
Mikey doesn't stop until he gets a smile out of you. When he sees it, his answering smile lights up the room. He asks if you are feeling better. If you are, he starts being silly, kissing your face and tickling you until you are crying from laughter. If you aren't, he asks if you want to talk about it. He'll listen and commiserate with you, and support you no matter what.

OOooooohhhh, for the imaginary friends idea; instead of Leo and Donnie defecting once it's revealed they, Mikey and Raph were all made by Draxum (as would probably be the expected result,) they try to convince Mikey to come to them.
They'd have known each other for five years, at that point, and Big Brother Feelings have been established, so they want their little brother to be on their side.
With the mindmeld, it'd be a lot harder for Mikey to ignore them, especially since he is pretty much an empath.
This would be really cool iiiif they actually trusted Draxum enough to bring their baby brother to him.
Ok, this is kinda how i see the twins' relationship with Draxum being, beyond mostly non-existant that is.
Draxum, to them, is their creator. They know this. But there is no real emotional attachment to that title. They see him as this large, powerful, intimidating figure that teaches them martial arts basics a few times a week. Who stays in his lab, far too busy fixing it to do much else. They don't know what his work is, nor do they ever feel comfortable enough to ask. But they know they will one day work for him to complete it. They understand this and, for the most part, except it, but, upon meeting Mikey, they know they don't want Mikey to be a part of that.
To them, Mikey is the one brightspot in their normally dull lives. Bright Mikey would never mix with the dark rooms and hallways of their home. (and they're afraid Mikey would get taken from them if they bring him back, at least early on.)
By the time Mystic Mayhem happens, i still don't think they know exactly what Draxum's work is. (Again, they don't ask. and he doesn't realize he needs to explain it.) And maybe they would think about it briefly? But Draxum makes a very big mistake during that episode, he attacks Mikey. and those two's Big Brother instincts are stronger than their loyalties to a cause that was never explained to them, or to a man who's never seen them as anything other than incomplete tools.
Honestly, i don't think they'd go and 'side' with Mikey and Raph immediately? but they refuse to side with a man that tried to hurt their brother.
basically, by the time Mystic Mayhem happens, they are the equivalent of a tired retail employee who couldn't care less about their job but can't exactly give their two week notice. Then shit goes down, and they quit on the spot.
I hope this makes sense. I'm still thinking a lot of this through so if it doesn't you can just blame that lol.
Thank you!

TMNT: Fusion Michelangelo Bio ✌︎
Fun fact: Did you know Painted turtles like to bask in logs? It helps rid them of parasites. Mikey especially loves basking under a head lamp given to him by Donnie. They all would have cuddle piles when they were younger.
Some Random info about our creative orange-clad turtle:
Karai taught him how to do makeup shortly after they head to the farmhouse. They paint their nails together with April and Shini. Karai and the siblings are cousins in my AU. I wanted to build the concept of Saki and Yoshi actually being brothers. Mikey is just the most accepting of welcoming them into the family, even though they tried to kill them for almost a year and a half.
When the siblings team up into duos Mikey and Donnie are the main duo until Leo becomes co-leader. Then it’s usually Mikey and Leo when team split-ups happen. Mikey and Leo is such an underrated duo too but they are both very supportive of each other.
Gets babied a lot at the beginning from their siblings so they like to show off and win practice matches to prove that he can handle themself. Mikey has the most raw talent for ninjitsu, he just doesn’t put in the effort for it out of fear of being responsible over his siblings. It ends up with them showing a lot of respect for Raph being leader as time goes on.
When Raph got his lip pierced Mikey wanted to join in but chickened out. He ended up piercing his mask and liked how it turned out! Instead Mikey is the cosmetologist person for the siblings. Donnie is most likely to try makeup though.
Helps Donnie with paint jobs on some of their inventions. Mikey’s most notable paint jobs are Metalhead and the Shellraiser
Cooks with Raph a lot of the time. Mikey and him will find recipes to try out. Mikey prefers baking but is the best cook of the family besides Splinter. Mikey also really enjoys cooking shows like Hell’s Kitchen and Rat in the Kitchen
Mikey has ADHD like in canon, and also has very good empathic abilities. Plus they’re also prone to the most injuries. Mikey is the most acrobatic of the siblings, hence the kneepads.
Bonus Full Body reference :)

I think the reason I like 2012 more despite thinking Rise is objectively better is that 2012 has bite. 2012 has Anger Issues and Body Issues and People Not Understanding Each Other and Messiness and so much imperfect about it.
I can't turn to Rise if I wanna see someone being really fucking pissed. I turn to 2012 Raph, and watch him almost kill Casey when they first meet, and watch him be made fun of for just trying to apologize and get rightfully mad about being made fun of. 2012 has Donnie, however inconsequential the scene is in the long run, snapping at Leo for always passing the buck onto him and not even thanking him for it. 2012 has Donnie ready to fucking murder a man for trying to hurt him. 2012 has April cutting contact with them when they mutate her dad. 2012 has catharsis.
I can't relate to Rise Raph. He is sweet, and adorable, and feels the pressures of being an oldest sibling, and I can empathize with him. But I can't relate.
I can relate to 2012 Raph. I can relate to his outbursts and his regretting his outbursts and his family not respecting his boundaries and purposefully antagonizing him all the time. I can relate to Donnie needing to constantly tell Mikey to Stop and Mikey knowingly refuses to stop making him upset until Donnie explodes and then Mikey acts like the victim for it. I can relate to Raph getting mad at reasonable things and being treated like a crazy person for it.
It's so much more messy and people do things they can't explain and feel things they don't know how to verbalize and experience things they don't know how to share and I need that

Character analysis: Rise Season 2: Mikey
I think season 2 was a hit or miss with Mikey. See, in this season, if Mikey wasn’t doing stuff with his brothers and saving New York, he spend his time reforming Draxum. (Even though it was only like 2 1/2 episodes). I had hope in season 2 Mikey would works on his powers, and talk to his family about his feelings. Did I think those things happen? Kind of. While Mikey did unlock his Ninpo, I for the love of me, can’t figure out what his new power is. Raph can make copies of himself, Leo can teleport himself and others, and Donnie can make any weapon out of magic. So what’s Mikey’s?
But I think this season, and his character arch, is him helping others. He is a supporter. He and April help Draxum, he had to work together with his family to save Todd (episode 2), he also had to work together with Meat Sweats to save New York (episode 11).
He’s optimistic, creative, competitive, and most importantly, emotional. He has 3 Dr persona; Dr Delicate Tough, Dr Feelings, and Dr Postive. (4 if you’re counting Dr Slightly Dissapointed). Each of his personas deal with his emotions. Dr DT is his blunt and anger, Dr F is is emotional intelligence, and Dr P is his optimistic and well, positive.
Emotional intelligence (otherwise known as emotional quotient or EQ) is the ability to understand, use, and manage your own emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges and defuse conflict. I find it interesting that Mikey, the youngest brother, is the one so in tun with his emotions. But it make scenes when you think about the core topic of Rise; it’s about family. It’s about loving your family, about not being alone, about letting people help you and overcome your burdens. Raph is the leader, he doesn’t let anyone help him, gets so anxious and stress out. Donnie can’t figure out his emotions in a healthy way, and Leo bury a his emotions, only being serious in times of need. And Splinter, he can’t dealt with his emotions and issues. So who has to be the one to deal with that? Mikey. His the family therapist, wither intentionally or not.
While I love Mikey, and the fact there more to his character then being the annoying little brother or him being treated like a infant, I wish they can have him not be that emotional support. Yes they showed us having funny and being goofy, and be angry. But I wish they let his character grow, to learn that not every needs to be help, that it’s ok to put yourself above others.

ROTTMNT Fantasy AU: The Messenger, The Hunter, The Prince, and The Thief - Mikey and Raph’s story
----------------------- EDIT: I’ve started writing for this! Start reading here or on AO3!
Also, we now have a blog here on tumblr! Give us a follow if you’d like! ------------------------
So @tiramisu-art created this Fantasy AU idea that takes place in a magical world. The the turtle bros are separated at birth and raised by different people.
The Messenger, Mikey - Raised by Toddrick the Druid. A courier. Has empathic abilities.
The Hunter, Raph - Raised by James Jupiter. A bounty hunter. Has dreamwalking abilities.
The Prince, Leo - A “ward” of Big Mama. Prissy rich boy. Has illusory and healing abilities.
The Thief, Donnie - Raised by the Mud Dogz with Leonard as a father figure. Thieves with honor. Has levitation abilities.
For this AU several artist and writers have gotten together and created some great stuff! But we were lacking in the Mikey and Raph side of things, so I figured I’d pop in and do some story building for them. Mikey was raised mostly in a forest and among animals, so he’s pretty sheltered and naive to the world. His empathic abilities give him insight into other’s feelings, but not their intentions. Meanwhile, Raph was given a very skewed sense of right and wrong based on the vigilante, James Jupiter’s (Jupiter Jim), teachings. JJ, being a rather narcissistic and manipulative man, also gave Raph a sense that if he made one wrong move he could become one of the very criminals and monsters that JJ fights. The two turtle boys meet up and end up learning from each other.
To see the Leo and Don side of things or just check out more fics and content I suggest reading:
The Twilight Thief , The Thief and The Orphan, and Beauty - By @undercoverwizardfanfiction
Shared Star - By @fraymotiif
The Favored Son By @tmntlovingleo
All fic content can be found in this AO3 collection.
Other big contributors to this AU whose work and designs I heavily referenced making these include @amberamyhaunter, @dovelydraws, @doesromandoart, @painted-arachnid, @unichurro, @void-inked-pen, and @frasierverse over on twitter.

sooo kind of a downer and if you wanna skip it i totally understand 💖 thank you for doing these !! but how do you think the bayverse turtles would react to their afab reader s/o not being able to get pregnant? like maybe they’ve been dating awhile and the boys keep mentioning how its gonna be when “they can finally start a family” and the reader has to break the news that they cant? i found out a few years back that i’ll never be able to give birth annnnd its been a process learning how to talk about it with anyone really. thank you again💙💜
Oo, this one will be interesting…
I’ve been off my posting game today- sorry fam
Warnings: Explicit mentions of infertility and diabetes
Incarnation: Bayverse.
Extra Info: Fem!Reader
Leo:
You two had been together for about six years, nearly seven
You were dating for about three years, then had an official/unofficial wedding officiated by Chief Vincent herself
You two had often talked about getting married, which led to that moment
But recently, Leo had been open about his want for children
You had held back the information that would prevent you from having children
You didn’t want to tell him
You were scared
You were still trying to wrap your head around accepting it, even though you’ve known for years
This night, Leo was thinking out loud as you two lay side-by-side in bed
“I just… Imagine it, y/n. A little creature that we would have created. I hope they’d have your personality, though. I can get a bit too aloof sometimes, and you’ve always been the one to point that out and stand up to it-”
“Leo…”
You looked at him as he quieted
He looked back at you, eyes full of love
It broke your heart
“What is it, Love?”
You looked back to the ceiling
“I’m infertile, Leo…”
You felt tension fill the room
You closed your eyes, not wanting to see what would happen
You felt him shift beside you
You felt an arm drape around your torso
“Y/n, look at me, please,” he whispered
You squeezed your eyes tighter
“Y/n, please…”
You released a long breath and opened your eyes
“How long have you known?”
You bit the inside of your cheek
“Since… Since we started dating. I was scared to tell you. I can’t even…”
You hated how you’re voice was starting to crack
“I’m struggling to accept it myself, and telling you…”
You closed your eyes again, letting out a small, pathetic whimper
Leo laid back down and pulled you to his plastron
“Me talking about it wasn’t helping, was it?”
You shook your head
“I’m so sorry, Y/n. I’m sorry…”
Raph:
You two have been dating for about four years
You had met him five years before, and finally started dating after months of fluttering around each other
And now, he kept talking about a future with you
You love it
You often talk about it while in his bed late at night
He always holds you close and thinks out loud
“Just picture it, Y/n. You and I… Married… I can’t believe I let myself think that sometimes, but I can’t help it when I’m lucky enough to be with you…”
You kiss him softly
“What else do you think of?” you ask
You were expecting something along the lines of ‘I can’t wait to call you my wife’
But that’s not what you got, not exactly
“I mean, I’ve always seen a future with you. You know, ‘husband and wife’ sorta deal. And like, y’know, one day maybe… Children. I’ve always imagined having our own one day…”
He seemed almost embarrassed by this, but you could sense how genuine he was being
The gentle tone in his voice gave you a pang in your chest
“Would you ever want to have children, Y/n?” he asked you
You couldn’t look at him
“I want to adopt.”
“What about having your own children, though?”
You closed your eyes
You remained silent for a while
Raph got up on his elbow and looked at you
“Y/n, what’s wrong? Did I say something wrong, or…?”
You shook your head, still unable to open your eyes to look at him
“Then, what’s wrong?”
“Raph, I…”
You took a deep breath.
“I can’t have my own children.”
There was a long pause
He was incredibly confused
“But, Y/n… What are you talking about?”
You opened your eyes and looked at him
“Raph, I’m trans.”
He became even more confused
“I fully transitioned before I met you, but… I was born a guy, Raph, and I don’t have a uterus.”
Raph looked away from you for a moment, then back at you
He smiled a bit
“So… You’re a woman?”
You beamed
“I love you.”
“I love you, too, Y/n. Um… Can I kiss you?”
You pulled yourself up to him and pressed your lips against his
Once you two pulled away, he held you to his plastron
“You know, we could talk to Vincent about adopting if you want.”
Donnie:
He had always wanted children of his own
Especially after meeting
You two were newly weds after dating for two years when he brought it up
“I’ve never felt so lucky to have someone in my life. Now I get to spend it with the love of my life and our family…”
You tried to imagine your family as just you and him, and maybe a pet
But he always implied that he wanted children
It always hurt you to hear him talk about his hopes for how your children would look and act
He always hoped they would act like you because you were always honest with him
You felt guilty after hearing this
So, you sat him down
“Honey, what’s going on? Is everything alright?”
“I, um… Yeah.”
What a lie…
“You know I have diabetes.”
“Of course- I remember when you first told me and I made that whole meal plan to help balance your sugars.”
You smiled weakly at the memory
“Why do you bring it up? Is something getting worse?”
“No, no.”
You put your hands in your lap and looked at them for a moment
You took a deep breath
You looked at him
“I talked to my doctor.”
You saw the worry fill his expression
He was about to speak, but you stopped him
You blinked slowly, but kept eye contact
“Donnie… You keep saying you want children, and I get that, I just… It’ll kill me if I have children.”
You saw the gears click into place in his head
His expression filled with guilt
“Y/n… I… I’m sorry… I should’ve known…”
You hushed him and looked away
“You’re just excited-”
“But I know the risks, and yet I thought selfishly.”
“Donnie, listen to me. It’s not your fault I inherited diabetes. It’s not your fault I can’t have children.”
“But it’s my fault I kept bringing it up.”
You stood and held him close to you.
“It’s okay. We can figure this out.”
Mikey:
You had been dating for only a few months when the topic of becoming a family started conversations
He always lit up when he talked about Little Mikeys and Little Y/ns running around
And honestly, you did, too
Until you were having a conversation with your mother about your family tree
She told you that your aunts were all infertile, and that- out of her sisters- your mother was the only one who was able to have children
All of her sisters were infertile
She was afraid the gene skipped her and passed to you
You didn’t tell this to Mikey, of course
You didn’t want to worry him
But he, being a total empath, immediately noticed something was off
You just told him you were going to be going to the doctor to get some stuff checked out
Which wasn’t a lie
It was just… a half-truth.
So, a few days later, you found yourself in your doctor’s office explaining the situation
After you left, you went to your apartment instead of the Lair
You felt like you needed to be alone with a pint of ice cream
You felt bad for ignoring Mikey’s calls, but you didn’t have the emotional strength to face him right now
But what does he do?
He comes to your apartment
“Angel! What happened?! You’ve had me worried sick!”
He engulfs you in a hug, careful not to smush your credit cream
When he lets go, he borrows your spoon and takes some ice cream
You chuckle dryly
He sits next to you, suddenly much more serious than he usually is
“Talk to me, Y/n.”
You take a deep breath, wanting to disappear into your couch
“I’m…”
You can’t prevent tears from following
“Angel cakes, come here…”
He wraps an arm around your shoulder and pulls you next to him
“I’m infertile, Mike…” you manage to whisper
“What?”
“I’m infertile. I can’t get pregnant…”
He nods slowly, processing the information
It clicks, and he gasps slightly
Your cries turned into sobs
He moves the ice cream away and holds you impossibly closer
“I love you, Y/n. I’m not going anywhere…”

Typing the Turtles (ROTTMNT) Part 2 - Donatello
This started out as an investigation into the turtles’ insecurities, because one thing the show does so well is demonstrate that they are still teenagers. And being a teenager is a confusing experience - there’s angst, drama, exploring one’s identity, a lot of growth, and overall figuring out who you are. That’s a messy process, too! And we see this mess in our turtles: they mess up, they’re learning, they self-doubt, they have fears and insecurities, but they’re also discovering their strengths and how to overcome their inner obstacles.
So after thinking about all this way too long, here’s my psychological breakdown of each turtle (I’ll be referencing MBTI and the Enneagram, but will include links for more general information on those if you don’t know what I’m talking about).
Donnie: INTJ, 5w6
The Architect, the Investigator, the Problem-Solver, the Observer
Firstly, getting into this analysis means that we have to step away from the stereotype that all INTJs are cold, aloof, and unemotional. INTJs, especially Turbulent ones, do express emotion, and we’ve all seen Donnie’s dramatic ‘theatre kid’ side. I’m not going to ignore that. He manages to be both thanks to the INTJ’s tertiary function Introverted Feeling (Fi). Extroverted Feeling (Fe) really allows one to connect and empathize with others’ emotions. Fi, however, is a more internal experience of feelings, and has trouble connecting with others without having been in their shoes. I happen to think Donnie is in a strong Ni-Fi loop, as well, which would make sense because fighting bad guys every day while trying to save the world after discovering a Mystic City which upbends everything you ever knew is pretty stressful. https://www.psychologyjunkie.com/2017/06/21/intjs-loop-understanding-ni-fi-loop/
And it’s super interesting that he often expresses his emotions by literally saying them. “Evil laugh! Relishing chuckle! Gasp!” (Mind Meld) and, one of my favorites, he literally says “Sad face emoji” in Many Unhappy Returns.
So while we DO see Donnie experience and display his own emotions, we also DON’T see him all that affected by other people’s emotions. He’s still pretty stoic in Mystic Mayhem after the delivery guy gets mutated, cracking a joke about imitation crab. He’s unaffected by Todd’s puppies in Repo Mantis, and the only one immune to Warren Stone’s sob story in Warren & Hypno Sitting in a Tree. Pizza Pit shows it best when he’s unaffected when Mikey’s favorite pizza place collapses until the same thing happens to him. Fi at work vs Fe.

As for Donnie being a 5w6, keep this core motivation in mind: “[Fives] Want to possess knowledge, to understand the environment, to have everything figured out as a way of defending the self from threats from the environment.” https://www.enneagraminstitute.com/type-5
Donnie at his Worst: Donnie vs. Witch Town gave us this gem of a line: “Because I’m the science guy! If mystic powers can do everything I can do, but better, then why would you guys even need me?” And while people have pointed out his need to be needed, I argue it’s a little more accurate to say he has a need to belong. His role in the group is the Brainiac, the Science Guy, the Smart One, and so his very identity is tied into fulfilling that role. A 5’s core fear is of being useless, helpless, or incapable. Mystic powers rendering his tech redundant, and thereby him useless, would be a pretty big threat to the security of his role in the group (that 6 wing kicking in). And remember a 5’s core motivation: to understand the environment as a defense. And he still doesn’t understand mystic energy. It’s pretty infuriating, so he’s pretty insufferable about it.

[Note: seeing mystic power as a threat probably didn’t kick in until their fight with Shredder in Many Unhappy Returns. Prior to that, his brothers were still learning how to use their magic weapons, but Donnie already understood his tech well enough to use it effectively (see their first fight against Baron Draxum in the pilot). But against the Shredder… all his tech was useless. Only the hanky, the hanky, was even marginally effective. His brothers’ weapons were now way more capable than anything he had to offer… core 5 fear. And to cope? Learn all you can about your fear/threat. Except he still hasn’t figured it out; we see even in Air Turtle that he calls Draxum for the mystic expertise instead of formulating his own hypothesis].
We’ve seen this insecurity about his place in the group before. In Mind Meld, as his brothers become more like him, his role is challenged. “Hey, you’re trying to get rid of me, that’s what I do to you!” “But, I thought purple was my... my thing.” When he first meets the Purple Dragon he immediately wants to join them because he sees them as tech peers. In Man vs Sewer even though he professes that it’s his day off, he doesn’t react well whenever Leo does ‘his thing’: analyzing the situation and drawing a conclusion. His self-worth seems to be tied to what he has to offer the group, and we hear that even in his song in The Mystic Library about proving himself.
Besides his insecurity, Donnie is practically allergic to blame. (Interestingly enough, he’s more okay with being wrong and others being right sometimes… sure he’ll deflect, but it doesn’t seem to get under his skin the way being at fault does). He will repeatedly deny fault and shift the blame to someone else when something goes wrong. He denies creating AlBearto in Al Be Back, says the incident with the Purple Dragons in The Purple Jacket is entirely April’s fault (she is not amused) and puts the blame for ditching Todd off on his brothers in Todd Scouts. The one time we see him own up his mistakes is in Mind Meld when no one (except Shelldon) is around to see it. “Yup. I beefed up.” This is definitely an area he needs to work on.
Average Donnie: Donnie cares for his brothers, but that doesn’t always get across in the best of ways. Take the episode Donnie’s Gifts, for example. Donnie never actually got a chance to explain how the gifts work, but we can see protective elements in each of them. Raph: please use your head and don’t just blindly rush in! Mikey: ohmygosh that is so dangerous, please be careful and don’t get hurt! Leo: stop poking the bear, Leo, it only makes him angrier! It makes sense that a 5 who has external fears of the world and has their own protective equipment (the Battle Shells) would extend that to his brothers. And Donnie was able to recognize that even though his brothers got the wrong message, he could move past that and call for a group hug. In the Purple Game he is super anxious to make sure his brothers are okay and not mostly hurt. Insane in the Mama Train also reveals the invention of the Panic Button… and who designed that?

Donnie also seeks a lot of validation. He takes pride in his work, and when his work is appreciated he gives that appreciation back tenfold [such as when he shows off the Turtle Tank to his brothers (Fast and Furriest), or when Splinter says he’s proud of him (Turtle-dega Nights: the Ballad of Rat Man)]. The flip side is that when he’s not getting the validation he needs from others he’ll create it himself, which comes off as arrogant and egocentric. See Smart Lair, when Sheldon 1.0 plays messages of Donnie’s self-worth all night, and is programmed to favor him. Or when he takes full credit for defeating a bad guy: the silverfish in Donnie’s Gifts, and scaring Draxum away with his disco ball in Shadow of Evil. When he gets the recognition for all his hard work from the right people, though, it inspires him to do great things. There is danger in getting validation from the wrong people, however, as we saw in Big Mama’s case in Bug Busters.
Donnie at his Best: Donnie’s at his best (and most relaxed) whenever he’s learning or building something. He gets super excited and happy attending April’s school (The Purple Jacket) or going to the library (The Mystic Library) and wants to attend college someday (The Mutant Menace). The INTJ/5 seeks to absorb information and he’s constantly energized by it.

He’s also energized when he can put that information to use, such as when building something. Did Albearto need a total tear-down in War and Pizza? No. But Donnie had fun making him ‘dazzle!’ How did Donnie cope being in the woods in Todd Scouts? By building an impressive tree fort. Donnie’s projects actually relax him, because he’s exercising his strength and capabilities.
This also works for his method of attacks and plans: Know Thine Enemy. He studies Warren Stone in Newsworthy when they meet him and is the only one who remembers he regenerates by Warren & Hypno Sitting in a Tree. Donnie and Mikey are able to successfully scam Repo Mantis in One Man’s Junk because they know how he thinks. Donnie thwarts everything the Purple Dragons do and can bring Shelldon home because he knows how they operate (The Purple Game, Breaking Purple). He can restore his brothers to their rightful minds in Mind Meld because he knows himself.
Also: music. The fact that one of his Battle Shells has a music mode (Mascot Melee), that he remembers things in song form (The Mystic Library, Donnie vs Witch Town), and that he likes to dance (Stuck on You) is so pure and adorable.
Donnie Relationships:
(while Donnie does see his brothers as dum-dums at times, he admits they’re fun and pretty great to have in Mind Meld)
Raph: We really need a Donnie and Raph episode, but even without one there’s some moments we can look at. I already discussed in Raph’s analysis their general similarities. Donnie doesn’t think Raph always has the brightest ideas, but still has soft moments with him such as giving him $20 at the end of Mind Meld, designing the ‘captain’s chair’ of the Turtle Tank to Raph’s lumbar settings, and appreciating Raph’s pirate accent in Snow Day. They are both protective of their brothers, Raph with his fists and Donnie with his tech. It’s interesting that (I believe) they’re the reverse of each other on the Enneagram: Raph is a 6w5, and Donnie a 5w6. So they both understand the risks involved in what they do (mostly: Donnie still ate poison and Raph still goes on ‘smashcapades’). I really want to see a team-up between them.

Leo: I’m all for the Disaster Twins trope, but to me an episode that epitomizes that isn’t one like Lair Games, where they’re at each other’s throats, but Operation Normal. They’ve apparently done the grandma-getup before. They wind up playing as good cop, bad cop in Fast and Furriest. Sure, one’s high-strung, and one’s laid-back, which can get on each others’ nerves, but there’s also a lot of making up. Brotherly betrayal passes back and forth between them, but never crosses a line. And the numerous times they unconsciously mirror each other can be found with a simple search of the Disaster Twins tag. I’m interested to see more episodes where they work together, even in the background, just because they can get up to wild shenanigans.

Mikey: Mikey’s probably the turtle Donnie most gets along with. They’ve had several episode team-ups: Repo Mantis, One Man’s Junk, Turtle-dega Nights: the Ballad of Rat Man, Breaking Purple, etc. Donnie may be the team academic, but Mikey has strong emotional intelligence. They get along pretty easily, making plans together (One Man’s Junk) and protecting each other (we see Donnie protect Mikey in Repo Mantis and Bug Busters, but we see Mikey protect Donnie by pulling him out of the way in Smart Lair). Donnie helps Mikey focus on the goal at hand, and Mikey helps Donnie communicate better with others. They’re a good team with a pretty solid foundation.

Ultimately, Donnie’s an inventive turtle who wants his brothers to be safe but is still wrestling with a lot of insecurities and unhealthy stress levels. I’m excited to see how he grows into real confidence and utilizes his strengths as an integral member of the team.

Gift exchange - TMNT fanfic
Yet another slice of life fanfic with @sassatello 's original character and mine, set in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles universe (2k3). You can read the first part here.
Click here for info about : Adrian (Sassatello’s OC) and Mizuiro (my OC) Words : About 2260 /// Type : Fluff, as always! ~
Gift Exchange Unfolding the small piece of paper in his hand, Donatello smiled awkwardly at the name appearing on it. He noticed how wiggly the initial was, followed by five succinct and well-rounded letters. As he felt a small rush of blood in his cheeks, he was more apprehensive than he should have been.
This gift exchange was a great idea for everyone in their group to receive something special. However, as soon as he had noticed the “A” on the white stationary, his mind was filled with doubt. For some reason, he had thought of a possible gift for everyone in their group: A comic-book shelf for Mikey; a portable radio for Mizuiro; relaxing bath salts for Raph; a French-press tea infuser for Leo... well, for everyone except Adrian. The common agreement in their group -considering the lack of funds from most- was that the gifts would either have to be handmade or recycled. Donatello could create a lot of things easily. He knew more than anyone that making things was his specialty. Nonetheless, he was now completely in the dark as to what he could offer to their terrapin friend from outer space. How could he find an original gift for someone who has access to an inter dimensional portal? Adrian probably could find whatever he wants, whenever he felt like it, right?
The ever so resourceful mutant turtle was already running out of ideas. It took him days to admit it, but he was at an impasse. Eventually, he decided to ask Adrian’s closest friend. She was the only one aware of their relationship so far. After all, only three weeks had passed since they had their first kiss.
~
Today, the turtles’ lair was being prepared for their annual Christmas party. While Adrian was helping Raphael hanging decorations around, Mizuiro was untangling fairy lights in the living room. Michelangelo was writing down the ingredients they would need for cooking and Leonardo was decorating the tree with their father. Meanwhile, Donatello was making sure that the electrical panel could handle their future power usage. Noticing how his task involved being physically close to Mizuiro, he thought it might be an occasion to ask for advice. Fortunately for him, loud festive music was playing at their place, thanks to Michelangelo. Nobody else would hear what he was about to ask.
“So...” Donatello started innocently, grabbing Mizuiro’s attention. Have you already thought about your gift?”
“I did.” His friend sighed after letting go of a knot she has been working on untangling. “But it’s not done yet.”
“Right.” He paused. “There isn’t much time left before Christmas.”
She hummed in agreement, keeping her concentration on the many wires laying around.
“To be completely honest,” Donatello continued, “I don’t have a clue of what I could give.”
He shyly scratched the back of his head, hoping for a reaction from her friend. Eventually, Mizuiro looked up, witnessing his doubtful expression. The brow bones behind his purple mask framed his eyes in a downward curve. He was implicitly asking for help.
“Whose name did you end up with?” She asked curiously.
“Adrian...” he mentioned in a lower voice.
Mizuiro looked around to check if anyone heard him. Seeing they didn’t, she got up and approached him slowly. Still hearing loud melodies playing around the lair, she relied on them to cover their conversation.
“What’s wrong, Donnie?”
“I really don’t know what I can give him”, he repeated, “and I don’t want it to be something that’s too obvious either. I don’t know if my family is okay with us being more than friends.”
“But,” his human friend interrupted him, “what makes you think they wouldn’t approve?”
“I don’t know.” he sighed, fiddling with his own hands as usual. “It’s not really a subject we talk about in our home. I’m sure you understand, since you must’ve thought about it, too.”
His friend’s shoulders subtly became stiff.
“Adrian told me.” Donatello shrugged, empathizing about these awkward feelings that weren’t easy to put into words. “Your secret is safe with me though, I promise.”
Without saying anything, she stared at him with a worried glance. After another quick look around, she finally let out a few words, in a much lower voice.
“I understand,” Mizuiro sighed, asking herself how long she would be able to keep her feelings secret at this point. “Why don’t you focus less on your intimate knowledge of him… and more on what other people know?”
He moved his right hand to his chin, not sure what she meant.
“For example,” his friend continued, “he introduced himself as a traveller, right? This alone must surely give you ideas.”
His eyes expanded after hearing this, realizing the answer has been right under his nose all this time. Well, his beak, in his case. Only a few seconds after, they were surprised by Raphael’s voice coming from the other side of the lair. He had his hand on the sound system volume, where he had adjusted the tuning knob to be heard.
“When you two geeks are done discussing electrical power and whatnot, could you give us a hand with this?”
As he pointed the top of the Christmas tree, they both noticed how their traditional star-shaped topper had yet to be functional. Immediately, Donatello smiled and walked in direction of the tree.
“What is it? You didn’t connect it on the garlands?” he inquired.
“We didn’t want to make anything explode.” Raphael retorted, half-joking.
Mizuiro admired the way Donatello could change subject so easily, not showing any sign of his previously stressed state of mind. She went back to untangling the lights on the floor, a well-known black hand with red spots appearing in front of her. Adrian offered his help while sitting next to her.
“You told him.” Mizuiro whispered after a minute of silence.
“What?” her friend breathed back.
“About… our secret.”
“Oh!” Adrian exclaimed, way too loud for his friend’s taste.
She put her finger in front of her mouth.
“I’m sorry!” Adrian justified himself, back to an undertone. “The guy is a genius. It was only a matter of time until he figured I was hiding something from him. It slipped out.”
His friend sighed again, trying to concentrate on the task at hand.
“I don’t want to ruin Christmas with all of this… drama.” She said softly.
Her terrapin friend placed a hand on her shoulder.
“I’m sure it wouldn’t ruin anything, but I’ll be more careful in the future.”
“Thank you, Adrian.”
He gently hugged her before untangling the last two wires. He felt the need to stand in a victorious swing, both his hands showing off the now precisely arranged lights on the floor.
“We did it!” He said out loud, trying to cheer his friend.
“We?” Leonardo stepped in. “Mizuiro did most of the work, didn’t she?”
She shrugged while getting up, Adrian winking at her with the most obvious smile. This guy just didn’t know subtlety like she did, apparently.
~
On December 25th, Adrian appeared in the middle of the lair. Their gift exchange has been planned for 3 PM, but the portal user came by an hour earlier. He could never determine New York’s exact time after the Daylight-Saving date. On other planets he visited, most of them agreed on a global time management solution. At least for once, he was in advance instead of being late.
“Hey, Adrian!” Michelangelo greeted him with a smile. “You’re early!”
“Apparently?” he smiled back after noticing the time on the kitchen clock. “Hey, where should I put my gift?”
“Right here, my dude!” Michelangelo pointed their Christmas tree.
He noticed that six gifts were placed there, all indicating their names.
“Wait, is Mizuiro here already?”
“Uh yeah, she’s with Donnie, in his lab. I think she’s working on something with him.”
Adrian noticed the television was on, the weather forecast announcing snow in their area.
“Oh, can we go outside after our gift exchange!?” his friend asked with an enthusiastic voice. “Is it okay for us to go out in the day like that?”
“We could, yeah! There aren’t many humans outside during Christmas anyway.”
Michelangelo drew the attention at them.
“Hey guys! We can start early. Adrian is here!”
Raphael and Leonardo stepped out of the dojo while two heads peeked outside of the laboratory. Splinter had risen up from the couch and sat next to their Christmas tree. The seven of them formed a circle, Adrian making sure to sit next to Donatello.
“So, who’s first?” Splinter asked. “Should I just pick one since I am not biased?”
They all agreed to follow his suggestion, and he carefully gave the gifts to everyone. One by one, they opened their gifts and thanked each other. Adrian had found a cool-looking extraterrestrial dagger for Raphael during one of his travel, who then gave a knitted scarf to Leonardo. The latter gave a bracelet to Mizuiro, mentioning he had looked for trinkets all around the city to make it. Michelangelo received a pair of harem pants made by Mizuiro, which he tried on immediately. He proceeded by giving his gift to Donatello, which was a homemade “Do not disturb” sign to put on the door of his lab with cupcakes he had cooked. Last but not least, Adrian received a water bottle from Donatello. A confused look appeared on his face.
“Please, open the bottle” Donatello insisted. “There is a filter inside that should allow you to drink water wherever you find it!”
“Oh, that is so cool!” Adrian beamed. “Thank you, honey!”
Completely oblivious to his words, he kept examining the bottle and the craftmanship of it. Eventually, his attention got back to Donatello, whose face was now as red as a mutant turtle could be.
“Honey?” Michelangelo broke the silence.
“Did that just slip out of your mouth?” Raphael asked, an awkward smile appearing on his face.
“Oh.” Adrian softly winced, realizing the situation he had just created.
He looked around and saw everyone alternating their attention between Donatello and him. The conclusion was evident, seeing how shy and silent both of them suddenly were. Mizuiro put her hand in front of her mouth to hide her subtle smile. Unfortunately, someone did notice it.
“Wait,” Leonardo addressed her. “You knew?”
She was about to justify herself when Adrian disrupted the general uneasiness. He casually went sitting next to Donatello and put an arm over his now official “boyfriend”.
“I guess there’s no way of denying it now, is there?” he joked, avoiding their stares by looking at his partner.
Even if he didn’t want to admit he was embarrassed, redness had also appeared on his cheeks.
“I am happy for you, my son.” Declared the turtle’s father, whose reaction was unexpectedly calm and collected. “You didn’t have to hide it from us.”
“Since when!?” interrupted Michelangelo.
Donatello, however, couldn’t say anything. It was not how he had planned to announce this to his family. Actually, he didn’t even have the chance to think of a better alternative. At least, Adrian had made it easier to swallow the pill by saying it nonchalantly.
“Erm well… Adrian, didn’t you want to go outside?” Donatello suggested, wanting to escape this uncomfortable situation as much as possible.
“Yes!” he remembered. “Let’s go now, how about that?”
Adrian got up and took Donatello by the hand, walking in direction of the lair’s entrance. Michelangelo wouldn’t accept the change of subject so easily.
“Don’t take it badly, I’m really hyped for them! I simply wonder why he didn’t tell us!”
“Love is complicated, Mikey.” Insisted Raphael. “Let them be. I’m sure Donnie will answer our questions later. Let’s just go outside for now, yeah?”
“Make sure to come back before 5,” mentiond Splinter. “That’s when I asked our guests to visit. Be careful, and don’t taunt him with your questions so much.”
A synchronized “Yes sensei” formally escaped the mouth of the three remaining mutant turtles. They all went in their respective rooms to find winter clothing. Donatello came back with other garments destined for Adrian. Snow has always been a source of joy for the traveller. Even if he had witnessed many different climates and meteorological phenomena, nothing could make him feel as giddy as Earth’s own frozen vapor. The fact that he had associated the sight of snow with Donatello’s presence might have been a good indicator of why he liked it so much.
~
Outside, while their little group were making a snow sculpture, Donatello had asked Adrian to take a walk far from the others. Holding his special someone’s hand along the road, Adrian felt proud to be with him. Despite the shy nature of his partner, he showed much more confidence. His smile was growing by the second, not having to hide himself from anyone. Well, he still had to avoid humans, -and the cold- hence the snowsuit he was wearing.
“I had something else to give you, Adrian.” Calmly said Donatello.
“Oh? You didn’t have to!”
“I insist. The water bottle was easy to make. I wanted you to have this.”
He handed him a booklet out of his pocket.
“This is a portable photo album with pictures of our group. I asked Mizuiro to help me print it.”
Adrian briefly looked at the pages in the book, but he decided to hug his partner for the moment being. He placed a delicate kiss on his forehead, hugging him even tighter.
“You’re absolutely precious, do you know that, Donnie?”
“Ah… come on.” He shyly scoffed back. ~

I know you’re more centered around Donnie boy but I’m curious, any thoughts on Mikey? Like I know he’s the goof ball but I can’t help but wonder what are some serious moments for this lad where the comedy takes a back seat. Maybe involving his s/o, what are some Mike being a serious bf moments?
Sorry for posting so much about Donnie dfsbbdasjdbash I do like the others too, I swear 😂
In general, I often headcanon Mikey to be very in-tune with emotions - that he’s an empath. Sure, comedy can be a good remedy, but sometimes it’s best to talk it out and he will 100% be there to listen and support. He sees each and everyone’s differences as a strength and he will love to be his family’s and s/o’s cheerleader whenever they feel down about some aspects of themselves. In general he prefers to get into any conflicts, but if it can’t be avoided, he can be serious and even a bit stoic, only to break down later when he’ll be alone. He wants to be so strong for everyone and carry their burdens on his shoulders, while he should remember to give some of his in return.
Mikey is a serious boyfriend when it comes to discussing the future. What are your plans regarding school, your career, or even this relationship? There’s no need for definitive answers, but sometimes it’s good to put everything on the table and discuss them. Hard times may come, but a good dialogue is prefered over screams and tantrums (he and Donnie are similar on that point - hence why they both hate when Leo and Raph get into arguments).

Thoughts on Raph's anger issues
2012 applied the "tough with a soft heart" trope for Raph but they couldve done more for Raph and show why he has anger issues. Does such a bad temper come out of a vacuum? Well Im not a psychologist so I dont know but if they provided a reason why hes angry, it would give him more depth. Most of his inner conflict is "i should stop being angry" instead of "why am i so angry?" so i pieced together a reason for why that might be and how his development followed that.
Based on what weve seen in canon, his anger issues might come from resentment that Splinter favors Leo more than him. Donnie and Mikey have other passions outside of ninjutsu but to Leo and Raph, ninjutsu is their world and it seems that Leo beat Raph in that area according to Splinter.
Resentment towards Leo and Splinter
Splinter may love his sons equally but he trusts Leo more. Theyre a very small family and prior to meeting April and the rest of their new friends, Splinter never imagined there would be others to take care of his sons. When he leaves, he expected them to be on their own. So hes preparing ahead for who is going to lead them next and that is Leo. Because Raph focused too much on his skills but didnt develop his character into one like a leader.
But Raph is very young and he might have misinterpreted Splinter's passing of responsibility to Leo as loving Leo more. And he feels frustrated and inadequate and those feelings turn into anger issues.
Isolation made his negative emotions fester
Raph is facing emotions he cant talk to anyone about. Leo and Splinter are the reasons for it and Mikey seems to be more immature than he is to understand complicated feelings like that. Theres a risk that Donnie might scold him if he opens up, personally i dont think he would, but its scary to open up to someone like that and youll come up with worst case scenarios if you think about it. And its very likely he doesnt want to acknowledge these feelings because its painful to admit he holds resentment for family who loves him dearly.
As for Mikey, Raph underestimates him a lot and hes not the type to unload his burdens on his younger brother. Its also implied that he feels protective over Mikey so as a protector, he wouldn't want to bother Mikey with his issues.
Being isolated for most of their lives and only having each other for company isnt the best environment to grow in. I think we all realized that during this quarantine. Its amazing the turtles turned out so well. And Raph developed issues because of it but thats normal considering his situation.
His love for pets
The writers might have put his soft spot for pets just to contradict his tough guy character but if we look at it in the context of his issues, it could be the product of isolation and his wish to connect with others outside of his family. He feels he cant open up to Leo and Splinter because of his resentment, theres a risk Donnie might be "too logical" and point out the flaws in his feelings instead of empathizing, and Mikey is out of the question for him. So he connects to pets instead because they won't judge him and he feels less lonely with them.
How Donnie and Mikey would've helped
Personally i think Donnie wouldve understood him and explained to him what Splinter's intentions are. Like Leo, Donnie has a burden no one else can carry, which is being the brain of the team. And the ones who gave him that burden are his brothers themselves, always counting on him to figure things out. Donnie knows they dont do this because hes their favorite brother but simply because of his capabilities. Just like Splinter gives burden to Leo because of his leadership skills.
Splinter, as their father, only has the right to appoint the role he has, and that is his position as the leader of the family. He cant dictate what the others choose to be anymore and if Leo refused him, he cant force him so its a good thing Leo is willing. But the rest of the brothers fell into place easily. Donnie the brain, Raph the muscle and Mikey the heart. Since Raph values Donnie and Mikey for what they bring to team, then he should also value himself despite not being the leader.
I also think Mikey wouldve helped him. Mikey is wise and has high emotional intelligence. He can concisely put into words what Raph needs to hear. There are some things you know but cant seem to believe in, for example, you know your friends love you but sometimes you dont feel it. But Mikey has no such disconnect, he believes in everything he knows, so assurance coming from him would be very effective. You know if he says something, he means it and hes not just trying to make you feel better.
Embracing the protector role
Since he realizes hes not cut out to be leader, he embraces the role more suitable to his skills which is the protector. He tells Splinter that he can risk his life easily but he cant do it to his brothers. Instead of fighting for Leos position, he finds his place in the team and i think that helps him come to terms with Splinter's favor towards Leo.
Summary
Raph develops resentment from Splinter's favoritism towards Leo and has no outlet for his emotions. he's unable to express that frustration in a healthy manner, turning into anger issues.
His love for pets also implies that he longs for connection and for someone to understand him without judging him.
If he had opened up to Mikey and Donnie who arent involved in the cause of his issues, his temper might not have gotten this bad because Mikey is empathetic and Donnie has a logical understanding of the situation.
He does come at peace with his emotions and he gets calmer as the seasons go by as he had given up on being the leader and favored student and accepted his role as protector.

@dysfunctional-doodle @sacredartist33013 let me know if you want to help.
Random snippet from Chapter 5 of 2003 fanfic 'The Brightest Fire'
-
Out of all of them, Donatello looked the most ready to kill. Michelangelo found that bizarrely funny for some reason and fought to hide the tiny, wild giggle that threatened burst from him. Sensei could probably feel it.
Don't give a shit about Sensei right now, the thought came, his own thought, and he had to stuff his fist in his mouth. He hadn't meant that. Had he? Or was it one of those darker, subtle subconscious thoughts that had kept rising from someplace deep for months?
Controlling his breathing, Mikey kept his eyes on Donnie. His brother was glaring at the Ancient One in a way that Mikey had rarely seen.
"You're just trying to antagonize us now," Donnie was saying in a low voice.
"I am sorry if you feel antagonized by the truth," the man on the other side of the portal shrugged. "I see no harm in it."
"Naturally, you wouldn't," Donnie scoffed, folding his arms. "All you see are tools, weapons, agendas. I can't imaging you would consider Michelangelo's emotions in any of this."
"Should I have? His emotions shouldn't be in play, only his abilities. Emotionally compromised abilities are uncontrollable, even dangerous."
Truly, if Donatello were inclined, he would have physically lunged into the portal at the man. In fact, Raphael would have done exactly that had Leonardo gripped his bicep hard enough to bruise.
Mikey blinked. All three of his brothers were snarling, lips curled back to display the unusually sharp eye teeth the mutation had given them. He ran his tongue over his own teeth thoughtfully. He'd never seen his brothers so upset over him.
It was like living in a soap opera.
"Dangerous," Donnie echoed with a rumbling growl. "Do tell."
The Ancient One gave a slow, lazy smile. "I could show you. Other timelines. Realities in which my point is proven." His sharp gaze fixed on Mikey. "Would you like that, little kumquat? Seeing what might have been had you been allowed to run free with these powers? The harm you might have caused the world? And your family?"
Mikey shivered so hard that Leo pulled him close and clutched him.
"You don't have to," Leo murmured in his ear. "He's just baiting you."
Sighing, Mikey kept his gaze locked on the Ancient One's smug grin. "I'd rather see," he said clearly, "So we know."
Donatello leaned past Raph and stared at him. Mikey sensed a wavering sort of horror from him. Followed by sad determination. He recalled that conversation two years ago where Donnie had opened up about where Ultimate Drakko had sent him and knew Don had been holding back. Well, that was fine. Mikey had held back too. They still didn't know Sliver's real identity.
Sliding his gaze to Donnie, Mikey gave a lopsided smile and pushed feelings of calm until Don hesitantly smiled back.
It will be fine, Mike thought at him.
Donnie's eyes narrowed. They all knew better. But it was Mike's job to find silver linings. He sent a thought to all three brothers about his and Donnie's time in the worlds Drakko had sent them to, and felt Leo and Raph growl. Haha, now Don had no excuse to hide his details either. Donnie just gave the briefest of nods. Mikey nodded back.
When he looked back to the portal, the Ancient One was holding what looked like a frame containing swirling energy.
"I can channel other realities through this," the man was saying. "You will see other versions of yourselves and you can make your decisions. But I am confident that you will agree with me, in the end."
Michelangelo straightened up and hoped he look as confident as he wanted to be.
"Do it," he said. His voice rang hollow in his ears.

What is Splinter’s opinion on the girls?
Oh dayum, that’s a good one.
Jocelyn started off as a very intense personality that, at once, he could see worked well with Raphael’s similar traits. She was mostly polite and well-spoken, too, which were all good points in her favor. The only times he caught her talking back were in situations where it was reactionary and warranted, and he never once saw her get into a fight. If anything, he’s seen her actively stopping herself from getting into a fight when she clearly wanted to.
It was impressive, really. He’d long wondered and worried that Raph’s first (or last) girl might be abrasive and argumentative, and he’s relieved that Jo isn’t. He doesn’t want any girlfriends (or boyfriends ;D) getting between the brothers, and Jo doesn’t. He finds her affable and easy to talk with, too, and has noticed how much she tries to befriend everyone she meets. She’s just…good, and he absolutely approves.
More than anything, though, he especially loves her because she manages Raph so well. She understands him in a way Splinter and his sons could never quite get (even Raph himself, tbh), and she can calm (or incite) him whenever needed, it seems.
He’s just also a little surprised and uncomfortable by just how brazen and shameless she is. More than a few times he’s caught her…petting Raphael in a clearly intimate manner, in plain sight no less, and she easily straddles him or slaps his ass. Worse, she’s got him doing the same things to her, and let’s just say Splinter would prefer not to think of his son like that. 8′D
Lisa is, in a word, adorable. She’s incredibly shy whenever meeting someone for the first time, then turns right around and becomes a lively part of any given event. She’s super talkative (he learned this firsthand very recently), highly energetic, very creative, and above all, empathic to a fault. When paired together with Mikey, the two of them get lost in each other, and Splinter finds it too cute for words.
The thing that really makes him the most happy, though, is when he realized how impressed she is with Mikey – constantly. It warmed his heart to see, because he knows as well as anyone just how much of a show-off Mikey is; give him the freedom and the youngest will absolutely jump headfirst into a spotlight just for the attention. Thanks to Lisa being his captive audience Splinter can now breathe a little easier, knowing that at least Mikey won’t be endangering his bros by brazenly walking the streets just for the stares.
She’s a perfect balance to Mikey, a receptacle for his focus and affection while also returning it, though Splinter…worries. The one big difference he’s noticed between the two is that Lisa isn’t so easily placated. Whereas Mikey is happy with incomplete comic book series and knock-off game copies, he can see that Lisa isn’t. Whereas Mikey loves the home they built underground, Lisa…doesn’t.
And as perfect as they are for one another, Splinter knows that living together is a far greater challenge than anything else a couple can face. If they can’t reasonably get along under the same roof – or concrete, as it were – he fears they might not recover.
Cassandra is…a concern. She’s a very sweet and gentle soul, and Splinter feels she could make anyone happy, but what little he knows of her relationship with Leo is worrisome. They don’t seem to share any hobbies or interests and they hardly spend time together. Compared to Raph and Jo, for example, Leo and Cassie are all but strangers.
They seem to get along, which is good, but that’s all they seem to have. Splinter hopes, of course, and more so because he feels both Leo and Cassie deserve to be happy, but he can’t shake the feeling that neither of them are really trying with one another. That’s not a very good sign.
It’s a shame, too, because Splinter does like her a lot. The limited interactions he had with her showed him that she’s soft-spoken, understanding, supportive, positive, and eloquent. If that isn’t a good match for Leo, what is? But, admittedly, simply being a good match isn’t enough to make a good couple.
