Meet Massachusetts-based Artist Kara Patrowicz

KARA PATROWICZ is a Maynard, Mass.-based visual artist, specializing in fibers, painting, and drawing.

CATHOLIC ARTIST CONNECTION (CAC): Where are you from originally, and what brought you to Maynard?

KARA PATROWICZ (KP): I was born in Brooklyn and grew up on Long Island. I went to Boston University and later returned to Boston to complete my Master of Fine Arts at MassArt. I stuck around to work, met my husband several years later and now live in Maynard, MA, in prime apple orchard territory. Overall I’ve been in the Boston/Cambridge/Somerville area about 15 years — I love the manageable scale of the city, full of universities and academic types. 

CAC: How do understand your vocation as a Catholic artist?

KP: My understanding of this vocation was strongly influenced by JPII’s “Letter to Artists,” and I still feel that he summarized it best as a search for “new epiphanies of beauty.” I love this reminder to seek fresh expressions of authentic beauty in the world, knowing that it is all an overflowing of grace from the Lord. When I use the term “beauty” I mean it in the fullest sense of the word, as an experience that can be both transcendent and deeply inward, pleasurable and painful, overwhelming and subtle, not simply a fleeting feeling of satisfaction.

I regard myself as a Catholic and an Artist but don’t often introduce myself as a “Catholic Artist.” Perhaps this is due to trepidation about how this label can be misinterpreted. But it’s also because I see these two parts of my life as naturally interwoven. My faith and my artistic calling grow out of each other. To be creative and develop my talents to their fullest potential is to be truly Catholic. To be religious and interested in the spiritual nature of things is intrinsically Artistic.

Lately I keep thinking about Flannery O’Connor. I really admire how her work bridges both “spiritual“ and “secular” realms. She was both devoutly pious but not afraid to engage with modern writing innovations and her resulting work spoke to both worlds in truly unique ways. I think this opened up overlooked (or even avoided) avenues for dialogue in the contemporary cultural sectors of her day. The scope and impact of my work is smaller, but I hope that it contributes similarly to this mission in my local communities.

CAC: Where have you found support in the Church for your vocation as an artist?

KP: The main support I’ve received has been encouragement from spiritual directors, friends in the young adult community, a wide range of priests, religious and laity. Many devout Catholics are interested in the arts and see it as a part of their spiritual heritage, and want to see these connections renewed. I’ve also particularly enjoyed following the development of groups like Catholic Creatives. 

CAC: Where have you found support among your fellow artists for your Catholic faith?

KP: I know a handful of fellow Catholic artists but most of the artists I know aren’t Catholic. When my faith has come up, more often than not, they are intrigued. This was especially true during my time in art school. Over the years I had some professors and classmates who wanted to discuss and debate topics of faith and the Church which was unexpected and refreshing. I find that if my tone and demeanor make it clear that I want to have a conversation rather than a fight, it helps things enormously.

CAC: How can the Church be more welcoming to artists?

KP: I think it would help if the Church had more art-related initiatives and truly engaged with young, contemporary artists. From a visual arts perspective, it would be wonderful to see more artist residencies based at Catholic churches (I actually tried to start one of these but didn’t get sufficient support), exhibits of contemporary work that engages the Catholic faith in a variety of forms, more vibrant art departments at Catholic universities, etc. I know this takes money and manpower that may be hard to come by. But I feel like I’ve seen glimmerings in some of the Catholic arts groups that I follow.

I also think that the Church could be even more welcoming of a wider range of art styles and approaches. Artwork and objects used in a liturgical context certainly need to follow essential norms. But “Catholic Art” isn’t restricted to liturgical art. Artwork created by Catholics can explore a huge variety of subjects, media and processes. Sometimes it feels like “Catholic Art” is expected to look a certain way, such as neo-Renaissance copies of Raphael or the sort of pseudo-modernist stained glass in many American churches. It’s good to remember that Catholic Art can have many manifestations, from traditional icon painting and folk crafts to abstract painting and video art. 

CAC: Where in Maynard do you find spiritual fulfillment?

KP: I moved to Maynard about a year ago and am still getting to know local Catholic communities. My husband, our newborn son Paulie and I attend Mass at St. John the Guardian of Our Lady in Clinton, MA. It’s a beautiful Church (we were married there too!) with wonderful, reverent music and great preaching.

CAC: What is your daily spiritual practice?

KP: I pray daily with the Mass readings and reflections from the Blessed is She newsletter, and my husband and I say a prayer together every evening before bed. I also have a personal prayer that I wrote to say each time I work in the studio. I had a spiritual director in Boston until moving recently, a priest who was a campus minister at my college who I reconnected with. I still email him and another prior spiritual director from time to time for guidance and it’s a big help!

CAC: What is your daily artistic practice?

KP: To be honest, I don’t often work daily (especially since I have a newborn baby right now). Even without a newborn, I typically worked other jobs and used my days off to work in the studio. I find I work best in this manner, rather than a short spurt once a day. Since my artwork tends to be labor intensive it is hard to have a sense of progress after working for only an hour or so; it’s much better to work for a longer stretch. I also find it really challenging to get into the right mediative, attentive mindset that my work requires if it’s only for a short period of time.

With my newborn I am cramming in bits of work where I can and finding babysitting so that I can work for longer stretches. I primarily use short bursts of time for tasks like applying to exhibits, updating my website, etc. I’m also figuring out how I can adapt my artwork to fit my new lifestyle -- as much as I enjoy meditative, labor intensive embroidery, I may need to work with materials and methods that are quicker and come to a resolution more easily.

My main advice is to find what brings about your strongest work. For some it’s working a little bit everyday, for others it’s consolidating time to work for longer stretches, or a mix of both (or something else entirely). 

CAC: How do you afford housing as an artist?

KP: My husband is thankfully very supportive of my work and is our main source of income. Until we married I lived in a million different apartments around Boston, all of which were cheap for the area and had multiple roommates. I found them all through local Catholic communities. 

CAC: How do you financially support yourself as an artist?

KP: Right now I’m a newly full-time mom, but before I worked a variety of different job situations. I’ve worked as an adjunct professor, museum desk receptionist, nanny, administrative assistant, part-time, full-time, multiple jobs at once, etc. I did a lot of job hunting through Hireculture.com and other sites, and also word-of-mouth. Massachusetts Cultural Council’s Artsake blog has been a big resource for exhibits and residencies, along with too many other sites to name. Right now I’m focusing on how to make more money from my work directly through building momentum on social media, experimenting with pricing models and selling prints and cards of my work.

CAC: What are your top 3 pieces of advice for Catholic artists post-graduation?

KP: Seriously prioritize creating a financially sustainable living (take classes in entrepreneurship, be rigorous about budgeting, etc.). Maintain strong connections with the artistic and spiritual networks you’ve formed, even when time is tight and energy is low. And required reading: Jacques Maritain’s “Art and Scholasticism,” Thomas Merton’s “New Seeds of Contemplation,” and Flannery O’Connor’s letters to “A” (compiled in “The Habit of Being”).

We call collusion, and we can’t imagine his Captain would be too happy about it, either.”

ON CAMPUS:

With the fun of Halloween behind them, the Foxes return to practice: if they want to keep themselves in Championships contention, they need to start stringing wins together, can’t afford to slack off for one game—or, as their Coach and Captain would have it, for one practice.  

It’s a rare double-header for Palmetto State Athletics: not since homecoming have both the football and Exy teams been scheduled to play at home on the same weekend, and the town is bustling more than usual with orange-clad fans. Despite the buzz, the Foxes stick to their familiar routine: a short practice in the morning on Friday, November 9, followed by a full day of classes.

For both teams, it’s an important weekend: the football team’s place in their own playoffs is far from secured, after their strong start to the season turned into a losing skid, just as the Foxes are starting to build momentum.

The results of the game against the Hornets will be posted on Friday night and, in order to put it together, there are a few things I need from you:

Due to the size of the roster, there is a chance that not every player will get to play in every game, so if you want your character not to play in the game (for reasons that could be related to being late to practice, poor performance in practice, mouthing off to Wymack/Grant/Claudia, or any other reason you can think of!) please let me know. While you can still let me know if you want your character to get a red card during the game, no one is required to be benched for this game: with our current roster and the number of red cards and injuries, I’m pretty sure I’ll be able to play everyone!

If there’s anything exceptional you want to take place during the game (fights, red cards, injuries, exceptionally poor play, etc.) please let me know, and I’ll do my best to work it in. This will work on a first-come-first-serve basis, if the game is getting too packed with details, you might have to wait for the next one;

After each game, two players will be selected to answer questions from the press. If you want to volunteer your character for press duty, please message me! This will also be on a first-come-first-serve basis. And if you volunteer for press duty, please only do so if you expect to be able to play out the thread with your partner in a timely fashion. Press duty slots for this game are already filled, so hang on until next time!

Aaaaaaalll-RIGHT, sportsfans! I spent six hours on Friday finally slapping together the first version of my Interdimensional Traveler costume so I could give it a trial run at Indy PopCon. I got some GREAT reactions/feedback, and now I feel ready to show ya’ll! Meet my new Cosplay character, who I am calling Riv for the moment. Read below for the deets!

The Story: No one really knows where the mysterious Riv originally comes from, or even what species she is. All that’s known for sure is that she's an adventurer and explorer with the power to visit alternate universes and dimensions. Each item she carries is significant, being a souvenir, memento, or trophy of one of her many adventures. She especially enjoys visiting dimensional hubs where people from multiple universes tend to congregate (read: Comic Conventions), although recently it’s as much because she’s trying (rather sheepishly) to find that one specific Captain America whose shield she accidentally took when visiting his world. It wasn’t her fault, honest, and she’d really like to give it back, although good GRAVY just how many alternate timelines does one universe NEED?!

Since I kind of slapped the last of this together in two days for the sake of doing a trial run, there’s definitely some pieces that need to be upgraded.

I need to repaint my KP grappling gun; I didn’t do it right the first time and it’s chipping badly.

Repaint the DP thermos; I didn’t have time to glaze it before the con so the lines are wearing away already. Honestly might just spray the whole thing over and start again when I have more time to be detailed.

Create proper Corellian Blood Stripes that aren’t just ribbon marked up with badly-bleeding black marker and taped onto my jeans. XD; They were peeling after only a few hours, no surprise there. 

Add either Triforce or Game Symbols to the Zelda Potions, no one knew what they were supposed to be. 

The patches are held on with magnets so I don’t ruin a perfectly nice jacket, but if I find a more effective way of holding them on, I’ll use it. They work great when I’m wearing it but I nearly knocked them off a couple times while putting the jacket or the backpack on.

ANYWAY, that’s the rundown for anyone who’s interested! I had a TON of fun with this on Saturday and definitely want to keep working on it for future cons! Special thanks go to my brother Caleb for helping me orient everything for maximum coolness, and to @ami-ven for suggestions the Corellian Blood Stripes because that really pulled the pants into the outfit and finished the look. :D

And then I started to think “Who else would fit into a role from KP?”. Granted, Matt as Hego is mainly for the fun factor of Hego and Shego being siblings. Will as Josh is also more of an amusing fit - though he really would fit the character, I think. And Isaiah as the Coach... I just really want him to do the funny part. He’s the only one of the grown-ups I could imagine being this perfect mixture of dunny and serious.

The only thing that bugs me is that I can’t seem to find a role that would fit Harry Shum Junior. Ma-aybe - and that’s a stretch - the old, wise-ass sensei? It would have a hilarity factor to have him be young and hot.

I really need to control my random thoughts. I just want to see Kat do the Kimmy pout and Emeraude be a hot badass super-villain. They do have great chemistry together, after all.

ich wollte noch ein paar abschließende worte finden, aber wusste garnicht wo ich anfangen soll?! also zurück zum jahresanfang: Nachdem ich mir am 23.Dezember 2015 meinen schwarzmatten ML zum Geburtstag geschenkt hatte, ging es am 8. Januar direkt topmotiviert los mit dem Video zu "PROLLZ".. Es schlug ein wie eine Bombe, obwohl "Ebbe & Flut" schon lange draußen war! Danach direkt mit Raf (den ich so gut wie garnicht persönlich kannte) und Shaho (den ich garnicht kannte) ab nach Jamaika,10 Tage Video drehen für "Geschichte"..Weedplantagen..Krokodile..Weisser Rum & Boom.. Wir waren um eine Erfahrung reicher, hatten ein krasses Video im Kasten und haben uns besser kennengelernt.. Zurück in Hamburg direkt ein Video zu "Ghettotourist" gedreht, weil es schon lange an der Zeit für ein neues Sa4 Brett war! Am 21.Februar hatten wir dann einen Auftritt in der Columbia Halle, mit Xatar und vielen anderen Rappern für einen guten Zweck. 10.März --> Cover Shooting für das Juice Magazin, mit einem unterbelichteten Fotografen. 18.März --> Optimal Video Dreh und Ende März dann 2 Wochen Marokko gechillt mit Cousin und Hamudi.. Am 7.April dann Echo Verleihung aber nichts gewonnen..trotzdem Spuren hinterlassen, bei einer Veranstaltung die sich anfühlte wie 10 Stunden Schlaf. Einen Tag später hat Capi uns mit seinen Jungs bei Jambeatz besucht und "paff paff & weiter" entstand.. 11.April --> Video Dreh "Intro". 15.April --> Zusammen mit Raf sein Release im Logo gefeiert + Gastauftritt in seiner Show. 17.April --> Backspin Interview zu "High&Hungrig2" 20.April --> Die ZusatzTour mit AK Ausser Kontrolle startet.(ausverkaufte Tour und wir haben uns alle super verstanden) Am 27.Mai haben wir dann "High & Hungrig 2" released und sind, obwohl wir nur 2 gammelige Videos hatten (Intro und Optimal) dann eine Woche später auf der 1 gelandet!(vor farid;) Weil wir so gut gelaunt waren, sind wir dann am 1.Juni mit Cabrio durch Hamburg's Bezirke gefahren und haben über Facebook eine Art SchnitzelJagd gestartet, wo wir Boxen & CD's verschenkt haben. 4.Juni --> "Rock am Ring" mit Raf. Ende Juni mit Raf,Farido,Bobby und Shaho dann nach Barcelona geflogen und das Cover für "Palmen aus Plastik" geschossen..ganz Barcelona zugebombt mit Bobby im Suff und noch ein paar Szenen für "Mörder" gedreht..(geile zeit gewesen) 5.Juli --> VideoDreh zu "Palmen aus Plastik", mit gefühlt 1000 Polizisten als Kulisse,Krokodil und Rabe.. 8.Juli --> Frauenfeld OpenAir Schweiz,es folgte "SPLASH mit Raf & 187..,"URBAN ART" und die "Altonale".. Am 18.Juli presentierten wir euch den goldenen CL (wie versprochen), eröffneten unser eigenes Tattoo Studio mit großer Autogrammstunde und meine Tochter wurde 4! 30.Juli --> "Helene Beach" zusammen mit Kontra. 6.August --> "Cherry Beach" Am 8ten dann der Bosnien/Kroatien Trip mit Raf,Farido,Sale,Agic,Hany & der Strassenbande! Video drehen für "Ohne mein Team", "Attackieren" und "Mörder" (Gzuz Part) 13.August --> FanTreffen mit den Gewinnern des Foto-Wettbewerbs..(frische Burger essen, Fifa zocken, Alkohol, Weed und DJ MIGHTY MONCH) 15.August --> VideoDreh zu "Baller los" in FFM. 19.August --> "Loud Festival" mit Kontra und AK 20.August --> "TrailerPark Open Air" 27.August --> "All Area Festival" (einen tag vorher hab ich mir bei Silberberg meine erste Goldkette gekauft!)..Danke nochmal Syn! 3.September --> UNSER ERSTES EIGENES 187 FESTIVAL!! AUSVERKAUFT MIT 6000 MENSCHEN!! ..an LX Geburtstag !! mit LX auf der Bühne!! (danke an alle die da waren!) 6.September --> Sucuk gekauft für meine Tochter;) 9.September --> "Palmen aus Plastik" RELEASE!! (wann wir die Lieder gemacht haben? KP!) 17.September --> Mit Raf in Barcelona da auf unserer Treppe Kokain auf unserem Platz 1 Award gezogen & einige Cocktails getrunken! ManagementVertrag bei Raf unterschrieben..(JA!Raphael Ragucci ist für die nächsten 3 Jahre mein Manager & ich manage den Rest der Bande!!) 2 Wochen später ist "Palmen aus Plastik" dann nochmal auf die 1 gegangen, weil wir nochmal Cd's hinterher geschoben haben!!(voll schlau aber) KRASS ..zweite 1, ganz ohne Boxen.. Dann bisschen in Berlin geprobt mit Live Band (ich liebe jeden einzelnen!)und wieder auf Tour mit Raf & Bausa als Support..alles ausverkauft und krasse Show! Am 22.Oktober einen Auftritt in Berlin, zusammen mit Tommy Lee Sparta und am 27.Oktober erfahren, das die Single "Palmen aus Plastik" Gold gegangen ist..wir haben uns zu diesem Anlass zwei Goldringe mit Palme anfertigen lassen..währenddessen stirbt Carlos fast in Hamburg in der IntensivStation (1 Woche Koma zum mitnehmen biddeeee) 6.Novemer --> Carlos Zustand ist stabil! Raf & ich beschliessen dem ganzen nochmal die Krone aufzusetzen und wir drehten das Video zu "Palmen aus Gold". 12.November --> Ich lass mir aus langeweile ein Mercedes Stern tattowieren.. 14.November --> Wir fangen an zu Proben, für die "High&Hungrig2 Tour" (zum ersten mal mit Proberaum, auf professionell) Und am 17ten November ging es dann auch schon wieder los.. Alles ausverkauft, bis auf Hannover..und Capital als Support..wieder 17 DATES !!! 24.November --> "Palmen aus Gold" Video kommt raus und hat heute (genau einen monat später) 7 Millionen Aufrufe.. Am 29.November nutzten wir auf Spontan die 2 Tage TourPause, um in die Schweiz zu fliegen und "An ihnen vorbei" zu drehen..(vielen Dank nochmal an die Mama von Raf, für die ganze spontane Organisation!)..mit dem Flieger zurück, direkt zur 1 Live Krone!;) (danke nochmal an alle, die gevotet haben!) 16.Dezember --> "Tannen aus Plastik" RELEASE!! Alle Boxen waren lange vorher ausverkauft! (gestern auf Platz 2 gechartet!) Wann wir die Tracks gemacht haben?! Irgendwann zwischen "Tour & Angel".. Am 17.Dezember war dann der TourAbschluss in der Columbia Halle/Berlin, mit Goldverleihung und Goldregen!! (Onkel geht dieses Jahr mit 3 x Platz 1 und 4 goldenen Schallplatten für die Singles "Ohne mein Team" & "Palmen aus Plastik" sowie 2 x Gold für die Alben "High&Hungrig2" & "Palmen aus Plastik" nach Hause! Ansonsten bin ich gestern 31 geworden und hatte einen schönen Geburtstag mit all meinen Freunden & Familie!! Hab mir ne DayDate in vollgold gegönnt und krasse Geschenke bekommen wie zB. einen goldenen MercedesStern in Originalgrösse von meinem Cousin für meine Kette;) Es war das krasseste Jahr meines Lebens! Ich danke Gott das wir alle gesund & frei sind, das sich der ganze Scheiss jetzt auszahlt, das ich Raf und viele andere tolle Menschen kennenlernen durfte und das IHR alle dabei seid und mit uns diesen Traum verwirklicht! One Musicfest 2019 was One Big Ode to Southern Hip-Hop

More than 40,000 showed up for Atlanta’s premium hip-hop festival.

The first ONE Musicfest went down in a parking lot next to the King Plow Arts Center in Atlanta. About 2,000 people were in attendance.

This year was the 10-year anniversary ONE Musicfest, now known as Atlanta’s premium hip-hop festival. And more than 40,000 showed up at Centennial Olympic Park for the two-day event.

The festival went down on Saturday, September 7h and Sunday, September 8th. And despite some confusion and mishaps — aka a bunch of artists were late for their sets — the festival was a successful ode to southern hip-hop. The festival was star-studded: day one was headlined by a bunch of Florida rap legends, including T-Pain, Uncle Luke, Trick Daddy, and Trina. Also on the bill was Gucci Mane, Three 6 Mafia, Rae Sremmurd, and more.

Day two was headlined by Dungeon Family legend KP the Great. His set included all legends, from Usher to Youngbloodz to Young Joc to Lil Nas X to Monica. Other standout performances included sets from Wu-Tang Clan, Raphael Saadiq, Ari Lennox, and more.

Kontak Perkasa Futures - Emas menahan gainnya karena imbal hasil obligasi turun menjelang rilis laporan pada Rabu (13/10) yang diperkirakan menunjukkan inflasi AS tetap tinggi.

Pedagang sedang menunggu data indeks harga konsumen untuk menilai tekanan inflasi dari kenaikan harga energi dan mengukur prospek kebijakan moneter. Presiden Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta Raphael Bostic mengatakan Selasa bahwa lonjakan inflasi tahun ini berlangsung lebih lama dari yang diperkirakan para otoritas.

Bullion telah berjuang untuk mendapatkan arah akhir-akhir ini karena investor menimbang tekanan harga, mundurnya stimulus era pandemi serta risiko terhadap pertumbuhan ekonomi. Dana Moneter Internasional (IMF) menyatakan keprihatinan pemulihan ekonomi global telah kehilangan momentum dan menjadi semakin terpecah, walaupun sudah diprediksi akan mengalami rebound yang kuat dari resesi Covid-19.

Harga emas di pasar spot stabil di $1.760,80 per ons pada pukul 8:21 pagi di Singapura, setelah naik 0,3% pada hari Selasa. Indeks Spot Dolar Bloomberg sedikit berubah. Perak datar, platinum turun, sementara paladium stabil.(yds)
