Ask A Genius 1125: Life and Decline
Rick Rosner: I want to talk about crystallized versus fluid intelligence, which is part of the same broad theories related to IQ. Fluid intelligence is raw problem-solving ability at its peak in young adults. The trade-off is that, as you acquire wisdom—knowledge-based expertise—this becomes crystallized intelligence. As you learn more and your brain ages, fluid intelligence is replaced by…

Charlie and Vaggie: Anima and Animus
There's something that I've been dying to say More than anything, more than anything Need you to know I love you more than anything More than anything
Charlie and Vaggie have intertwined and complementary arcs, which are beautifully explored through the jungian archetypes of anima and animus.
WHAT ARE ANIMA AND ANIMUS?
According to Carl Jung, the anima and animus are parts of the human mind. In particular, the anima is the feminine and the animus is the masculine. Everyone has naturally both, but society promotes specific gender values and drives people to repress traits culturally associated with the opposite gender. So, to fully be complete, a person should integrate the negated part. In stories, this usually happens through a meaningful romantic relationship.
Charlie and Vaggie are two women, but they still exhibit opposite gender traits:
Charlie is a princess, who sings her heart out at every chance. She is focused on words, ideals, feelings and she strongly believes in love. All traditionally feminine traits.
Vaggie is a soldier, who shows pride in her fighting abilities. She is focused on actions, pragmatism, battles and she strongly believes in strength. All traditionally masculine traits.
And yet, things are not so simple. Let's consider Charlie and Vaggie's designs for example:
Charlie usually wears masculine clothes, as she prefers androgynus suits. Not only that, but her name means "free man" and she goes with the gender neutral "Charlie", rather than her given name "Charlotte":
Valentino: YEAH! That BITCH Chuckie or Chandler, or I dunno- Something mannish like that.
Vaggie usually wears feminine clothes, as she sports a short skirt and loose long hair. Even her name is linked to femininity, as it literally means "vagina":
Angel Dust: You're doing great, Vagina.
Even when it comes to Chaggie's The Nightmare Before Christmas's allusion...
Charlie references Jack Skellington, as she is the Princess of Hell and a passionate dreamer
Vaggie references Sally, as she is a run-away and Charlie's level-headed helper
So, Charlie seems superficially more feminine and Vaggie appears more masculine, but their looks and inspirations suggest otherwise. Why?
In truth, even if Charlie is a singing disney-like princess and Vaggie is a badass super-soldier, they don't perfectly fit the typical anima and animus characterization. This is true for their appearances and on a deeper level. Specifically:
Charlie is linked to the anima (feminine), but she is active (masculine) and stronger than Vaggie. Finally, even if she is passionate about feelings, she is often insensitive. For example, she doesn't notice her loved ones' struggles, like Angel's pain and Vaggie's insecurities.
Vaggie is linked to the animus (masculine), but she is reactive (feminine) and very sensitive deep down. Moreover, she is weaker than Charlie in terms of raw power, so her obsession with protecting the princess is misplaced.
Charlie is an anima character with a strong repressed animus and Vaggie is an animus character with a strong repressed anima. They have to integrate with each other to become whole. Still, what should they learn from their partner?
LOVE AND HATE
Charlie and Vaggie have the same problem declined in opposite ways:
Husk: Princess, is a bleeding heart who wants to solve everybody else's problems 'cept her own.
Husk about Vaggie: This one judges everyone and everything because she hates herself.
Charlie wants to fix everyone in an unconscious attempt to fix herself. She loves everyone because she herself wants to be loved.
Vaggie is cold and closed off out of guilt and self-hate. She is suspicious of everyone because she can't really forgive herself.
Both girls have low self-esteem, but Charlie tries to compensate with love, whereas Vaggie tries to defend with hate. These different coping mechanisms stem from their upbringings.
Charlie is the daughter of Lucifer and Lilith, who love her deeply, but are also distant and neglectful. As a result, she admires them, but feels unworthy of their attentions and legacy:
Lute: The only reason you're still here is because daddy gave you and your hellborn kind a pardon from an exorcist blade. How does that feel, to know how little you matter?
She is stuck being the lovable, but useless princess.
Vaggie is brought up in Adam's army, which is an abusive environment, where hate is seen as strength. Vaggie has a place in the world because she kills and is good at it:
Adam: You were on the front lines, I wouldn't forget a bad bitch like you. It's why I named you after the best thing ever. Vaggie. Anyway, you sure fucked up, didn't you?
She is stuck being the ruthless and remorseless soldier.
The path ahead for both girls lies in discovering they are more than just the princess and the soldier. In particular:
Charlie must accept she herself is capable of feeling negative emotions, like pain and anger. She can be aggressive and this doesn't make her mean. It makes her healthy.
Vaggie: Well, I mean… You're the princess of Hell. You don't really use the power that comes with that, which I love about you, but maybe you can… I don't know, command a little more… Authority? Charlie: But that's so mean. Vaggie: It's not mean, exactly. It's… uh, aggressive kindness.
Vaggie must learn to open up to others. She must show vulnerability and express her positive feelings more. She has a merciful and sensitive side, which doesn't make her weak. It makes her strong.
Chaggie have the potential to help each other bloom. Vaggie is the first person to tell Charlie she should be more self-assured in her role of Princess of Hell. Charlie is the first person, who takes care of Vaggie as she is hurt and unable to defend herself. Charlie can teach Vaggie to embrace her inner maiden (love, mercy). Vaggie can show Charlie how to be a real warrior (aggressivity, strength). At the same time, their opposite mentalities lead to some problems in their relationship.
TRUST FALLS (APART)
Charlie: I trust everyone, so maybe you know better on how to build it properly!
Angel Dust to Vaggie: To be fair, do you trust any man? Any men? Men?
Charlie trusts everyone, whereas Vaggie trusts no-one. So, none of them really knows how to trust properly. This becomes obvious in the episode Scramble Eggs, where:
Charlie trusts Vaggie so much she doesn't realize she is putting a lot of pressure on her partner:
Charlie: Oh, come on. It'll be easy! I'm sure you can handle this. Vaggie: Yeah, um, Sure, I can handle this. No problem.
Vaggie trusts Charlie so little she isn't able to confide nor lean on her partner:
Charlie: It's no big deal, Vaggie. You know, maybe I can just help, uh- Vaggie: No. I told you you could trust me, and I'm not going to let you down.
Charlie acts like the damsel and lets Vaggie handle the whole situation. Vaggie plays the knight and refuses to share the burden with Charlie:
So I, I'll be your armor Do whatever it takes, I'll make the mistakes I'll spend my life being your partner
The song Whatever It Takes plays the princess/knight motif straight. Vaggie sees herself as worthy of Charlie only if she can be her knight in shining armor. This may seem sweet, but there is something to be said about Vaggie echoing Carmilla, a mother who is singing to her daughters:
So I, I'll be your keeper Do whatever it takes, I'll make the mistakes I'll keep you safe and keep this secret
It makes sense for a parent to shoulder the burden for their kids' sake. However, a person wanting to do the same for their lover is unhealthy. Especially, when the secret of a balanced relationship is established early on:
Charlie: From the dust of Earth, they created Adam and Lilith, equals as the first of Mankind.
The two partners must be equals, but Vaggie sees herself as inferior to Charlie and tries to over-compensate. In this way, though, she takes away Charlie's agency. Charlie instead knows something is off deep down. However, she does not address the matter because she would need to go deeper into herself, her feelings and her relationships. And Charlie wants to avoid it at all costs.
Chaggie's communication issues are conveyed meta-narratively in Charlie and Vaggie's individual songs:
-Charlie's Happy Day in Hell has our princess sing so loud that she almost covers Vaggie's warning:
Charlie: If I can show them the dream I've dreamed That any soul can change! Vaggie: Those angels' minds are hard to change Charlie: Then they will know everyone can be redeemed From the evil to the strange! Vaggie: They're bloodthirsty and deranged!
She doesn't listen to Vaggie.
-Vaggie's Whatever It Takes is sung by our knight to her princess, but Vaggie has Charlie leave before the beginning:
Charlie: Vaggie, don't say that! You do so much! It's- Vaggie: I'm sorry. I'd… I'd like to be alone for a minute.
She doesn't talk to Charlie.
Eventually the couple's trust exercise is solved positively:
Charlie: No, no, I'm sorry. I'm sorry I put pressure on you. We work as a team. I guess I just thought all this would be easier, but, we'll figure it out, together. I mean, look what your exercise did for them.
Charlie goes out of her way to talk with Vaggie and Vaggie's team-building works. Charlie puts both her and Vaggie's feelings into words, whereas Vaggie builds trust through her actions.
Despite this, Chaggie don't really address their problems, which come back stronger:
Adam: Don't you act all high and mighty Did you ever think your little girlfriend might be a liar? Vaggie: Don't, Adam, please! Adam: What's the fuss? Why hide the fact that you're an angel just like us?
Charlie has been ignoring Vaggie's dark side, so she is devastated when it comes out. Vaggie instead has been hiding the truth from Charlie, so it is revealed in the worst way possible. After this, there is an inversion in Charlie and Vaggie's dynamic:
Vaggie: Charlie, can we talk about this-- Charlie: We can talk later. Right now, we have a job to do. You with us?
Vaggie is the one looking for a conversation, whereas Charlie pushes her girlfriend away. Before they can reconcile, the two girls need to go through individual trips and to find the guidance of two mentors.
A singer
A dancer
SINGING AND DANCING
Rosie and Carmilla are mature versions of Charlie and Vaggie:
Rosie is the Ruler of Cannibal Town, one of the nicest place in Hell. She is good-natured, but respected by her people. Moreover, she runs an Emporium, where she helps her clients with their personal problems. This is pretty much what Charlie would like to do with the Hazbin Hotel. Rosie is also a singer and is inspired by Dolly, from the musical "Hello, Dolly!"
Carmilla is Hell's top weapon dealer, so she specializes in war and is herself an exceptional fighter. However, she is not ruthless and mostly fights to protect her loved ones. She is the kind of person a more balanced and self-assured Vaggie might become. Carmilla is also designed as a ballerina and her two daughters are called after protagonists of famous ballets.
Why do Charlie and Vaggie's adult selves have a singing and dancing motif? That's because Charlie and Vaggie are respectively a singer and a dancer.
Charlie is a singer:
Charlie: My name is Charlie, I like to sing! And when we get to know each other it's the greatest thing!
She always conveys her feelings through songs, like her many attempts to pitch her hotel (to the Sinners, to Adam, to the Cannibals). What is more:
Charlie: But Lilith thrived, empowering demonkind with her voice and songs.
Charlie wants to become like Lilith and to empower people with her voice. Her objective is to grow into an inspiring leader, who changes minds and touches hearts with words.
Vaggie is a dancer:
The problem is that she has yet to realize it. Vaggie struggles with self-expression, which is why she has very few songs in the first season. That said, she shows her devotion through actions, like her determination to fight for Charlie. What she needs to learn is a new fighting style rooted in love. That is dancing, a way to express one-self through the body. This is made clear by the two cut episodes Challenge Day and The Baphomet Ball:
This cut plotline had Vaggie fight proto-Carmilla and lose. Charlie would later cheer her up by inviting her to a Ball. There proto-Carmilla would be impressed by Vaggie's dancing skills. The basic idea is obvious. Vaggie is a fighter, who must evolve into a dancer.
So, once again Chaggie is complementary:
Charlie is linked to singing, words and "soul", as she herself is the Heart of the Hazbin Hotel.
Vaggie is linked to dancing, actions and "body", as she herself is the Arm of the Hazbin Hotel.
As a result, they are given opposite missions to save the hotel:
Charlie must convince the Cannibals to join her army (singing). She must find people, who will help them fight.
Vaggie must discover from Carmilla how to fight the exorcists. This means both learning her fighting style (dancing) and obtaining the angelic weapons.
And yet, to succeed in their respective areas of expertise both Charlie and Vaggie must step into the other's shoes.
Charlie learns to better understand Vaggie and by doing so she realizes the importance of actions:
Rosie: If there's anything I've learned, it's that words are cheap, but actions, they speak the truth. So, what have her actions said? Charlie: That she believes in me, and what we're doing.
Not only that, but she is forced to take a look inside and starts unpacking some of her negative emotions:
Charlie: My girlfriend is an Exorcist angel, and she never told me Rosie: Oh, shit! Quite a secret. How does that make you feel? Charlie: Just, angry, because we share everything, because she always supported me, and my ideas, and-and- and now, I don't know whether or not that was just more of the lies! Oh no that's a horrible thing to think! Do i think that?! Yes! N-no. Kinda?
As a result, she comes up with a song that combines her natural showmanship and charisma with a new resolution to act:
Charlie: For the first time in my life I might have to be ready for this Ready to be the one who's leading from the front Gotta come into my own Gotta come into my throne Gotta take charge and defend my only home And although I kinda feel unsteady Now I need to be ready for this
Charlie steps into the role of leader and is ready to take action:
All: For the first time in our lives We know that we are ready for this Rosie: We'll show Heaven a fight they won't forget! All: It's time to take a stand Charlie: It is time to lend a hand! (Cannibals: Huzzah!) Against the angels and their deadly threat! All: We cannot take it anymore The time has come to go to war Prepare to fight, we're ready for… THIS!
Vaggie inspires the residents of the Hotel to stay and convinces Carmilla to help. By doing so, she shows how much she has grown thanks to her time with Charlie:
Vaggie: What's important now is that we're going to have a fight on our hands. Look, this hotel is about to become the most dangerous place in hell, and we….I, can't guarantee your safety anymore. I still believe in Charlie's dream. I know this place can work. But none of you signed up for this. I'm gonna go learn how we can fight back, and when I come home….Well I'll understand if none of you are here.
Moreover, she learns to fight in a new way intertwined with music (Charlie's passion and world):
This fighting style is focused on defense and survival, rather than attack and killing:
Carmilla: Angels attack quickly, viciously, and without mercy. You'll need to defend better than that.
Carmilla: Well, look at that. You might just survive this.
It is based on love:
Carmilla: I see you're driven by your detestation Your every step is stoked with animus You need a different type of motivation Or there's no way that you can handle this I know you're thirstin' for vengeance, Vaggie You're out for blood But you'll only stand a chance if you're out for love
By the end, Charlie and Vaggie meet each other in front of the Hazbin Hotel. Charlie leads the people (soul) and Vaggie has the weapons (body). They have also grown enough to better understand each other. Charlie empathizes with Vaggie and forgives her lie. Vaggie realizes how much Charlie cares for her and is ready to value herself more:
At the same time, Charlie faces some of her repressed "aggressivity" and makes an important step as Princess of Hell:
Rosie and Alastor: She's bound to pass the test as Princess of Hell Like her Daddy, she is madly power-fell!
Vaggie instead learns some "self-love" and makes progress into becoming a true angel:
Carmilla: You're gonna fight without gloves And when that push comes to shove Yeah, you just might rise above Long as you're out for love
These changes are fully embraced and tested in the final battle.
FINALE: DEVIL AND ANGEL
The fight against the Exorcists is where Charlie and Vaggie's integration is on full display, starting with their designs:
Charlie wears a mini-dress with a heart decoration and wields a shield.
Vaggie fully covers her body with an androgynous and practical attire. She fights with her signature spear.
The usually masculine looking Charlie appears feminine. The usually feminine appearing Vaggie looks masculine. Their outfits also fit their respective fighting styles. Charlie is defensive, whereas Vaggie is aggressive. Wait... isn't something wrong? Shouldn't Charlie grow more aggressive and Vaggie more defensive? Yes and this is precisely what happens as the battle progresses...
Charlie is overwhelmed by her anger and grief over Sir Pentious's death and unlocks her full demonic form. She goes from defense (shield) to offense (pitchfork) and injures Adam. Finally, she transforms her arm into a claw and stops the First Man in his tracks.
Vaggie is attacked by Lute, loses her spear and is forced on the defensive. She protects herself from Lute's relentless assault until she reveals her angelic wings and traps her opponent. Eventually, she has pity of Lute and lets her live.
Charlie's climatic moment is a show of strength, whereas Vaggie's is a show of mercy.
In other words:
Charlie appears more feminine, but acts more masculine
Vaggie appears more masculine, but acts more feminine
In comparison to their usual dynamic, Chaggie go through a complete inversion. This development is conveyed also by a small detail: their hair. Charlie lets hers loose, while Vaggie ties hers.
Charlie's hair usually covers her horns and is tied because she represses her demonic side. The moment she gives in to her inner demon, the horns come out and the hair gets loose, just like her feelings are untamed.
Vaggie: I'm not used to fighting with long hair.
Vaggie's hair is an attempt to hide her past and vulnerability. She has it grow after her abandonement to mask her scars (her eye and missing wings). In the finale, she ties it to fight freely. In this way, her brand new angelic wings can come out in all their beauty.
So, Charlie embraces her demon side, while Vaggie has her inner angel emerge. The twist is that Charlie the demon teaches Vaggie how to be a proper angel. Vaggie the angel instead shows Charlie that there is value in demonic traits. They integrate with each other to become the best versions of themselves. This shows also before and after the fight.
In the Finale, Charlie expresses all her self-loathing:
Charlie: He did it for us, the ultimate sacrifice He gave me his trust, and look how we paid the price This bloodshed could have been avoided If I convinced Heaven to work together I took a hotel and I destroyed it I know I could have done better Better, instead of letting you down
Thanks to this, her loved ones come to her side and support her. What is more, she starts to back up her words with actions:
Katie Killjoy: Charlie Morningstar managed to fend off the angelic attack with more than just nice words.
In More Than Anything Reprise, Vaggie conveys her love to Charlie through words and is there for her in a moment of self-doubt and weakness:
Vaggie: You've already done so much So many lives you've changed So many souls you've touched And in the end, if it's only me you've saved
She shows her sweetness and sensitivity.
By the end of season 1, Chaggie are together and stronger than ever. They have made the first steps into integration and tapped into their respective potentials. Both as individuals and as saviors of the universe.
THE MYTH OF EDEN
Charlie: Drawn in by Lilith's fierce independence, Lucifer found her, and the two rebellious dreamers fell deeply in love.
The series starts with a retelling of the myth of Eden, which is set-up as the heart of the series:
Plot-wise all the characters are living with its consequences
Theme-wise it shows the birth of love between the first man and the first woman...
The twist is that the first couple isn't Adam and Eve, but Lucifer and Lilith:
Who are foils to Charlie and Vaggie:
Both couples have a demon and an angel, who fall in love against the odds.
Both Charlie and Vaggie foil Lucifer in different ways. Like her father, Charlie is a wide-eyed idealist, who doesn't fit in her kingdom and wants to change it. Like the devil, Vaggie is a fallen angel, who is let down by heaven and finds love in hell.
Both Charlie and Vaggie are set-up to foil Lilith. Charlie is a demon full of love, who wants to empower others with her voice. Just like her mom. Vaggie is an angel hidden in hell, who keeps secrets out of a misplaced wish to protect others. Lilith is a demon hidden in heaven... wanna bet that she is keeping secrets from her husband and daughter to protect them?
Why is there such a juxtaposition between the two couples? Two reasons:
Charlie is gonna deal with her complicated feelings for her parents through Vaggie. Her partner is gonna challenge her to grow into her own person (microchosm).
Lucifer and Lilith unwillingly broke the world, but Charlie and Vaggie are gonna fix it (macrochosm)
This is why the two couples are immediately juxtaposed:
After Charlie ends her retelling of The Story of Hell, Vaggie arrives to check on her.
Lucifer and Lilith destroyed the status quo:
Charlie: But this gift came with a curse. And with this single act of disobedience, evil finally found its way to Earth. With it, a new realm of darkness and sin. And the order Heaven worked to maintain was shattered.
Charlie and Vaggie will bring a new and better one:
Charlie: We'll make a difference, wait and see Charlie and Vaggie: We're gonna do this, you and me

DeepSeek’s Disruption: What It Means for the AI Industry and Its PR Challenges
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/deepseeks-disruption-what-it-means-for-the-ai-industry-and-its-pr-challenges/
DeepSeek’s Disruption: What It Means for the AI Industry and Its PR Challenges
DeepSeek‘s sudden rise has reshaped the AI field, where American tech giants like Nvidia, Google, and OpenAI once held clear dominance. Their success questions existing ideas about technological advancement, affects investor faith, and brings new considerations about AI’s direction. For both major corporations and smaller companies, this situation presents a chance to rethink their approach to market changes and public perception.
PR Challenges for US Tech Giants: Nvidia’s $600 Billion Signal
Nvidia‘s recent $600 billion market value drop shows just how much DeepSeek has influenced the industry. While Nvidia built its reputation on leading AI hardware development with advanced chips, DeepSeek demonstrated that significant advances can happen without massive computing resources. This achievement challenges the long-held belief that hardware superiority determines market success.
The financial decline goes beyond numbers – it marks a fundamental shift in how investors and the public view progress in AI. US companies that seemed to be dominating now appear open to competition from quick-moving rivals. For Nvidia and similar companies, rebuilding market confidence demands they re-prove that their premium chips are still relevant.
This situation impacts more than just Nvidia. Industry giants like Google and OpenAI, despite their vast computing resources, now face pressure to prove they can adapt. Their communications strategies must go beyond raw computing strength, effectively showcasing DeepSeek’s achievements while emphasizing the unique value of their approach – doing ‘more with less.’ Given the nuanced and complex nature of deep tech, simplifying its value proposition requires both expertise and strategic storytelling. Companies that fail to evolve risk becoming obsolete in an increasingly dynamic field.
Shifting Narratives: Innovation Beyond Hardware
DeepSeek’s achievements have altered how the industry thinks about advancement in AI. For years, the field centered on increasing computing power, working under the assumption that more processors meant better results. DeepSeek proved that smart thinking and focused solutions can succeed without massive infrastructure investments.
This shift creates an opportunity for companies to change their message. With a great deal of fatigue in the media surrounding AI, the focus can no longer be just on technical capabilities. Instead, companies need to highlight real results and practical benefits that cut through the noise. US tech leaders must now strike a balance between technical excellence and clear communication that resonates with various audiences, from investors to everyday users, ensuring that AI is seen as a valuable, tangible asset rather than just another overhyped innovation.
Opportunities for Smaller Players
While large companies work to adjust their strategies, smaller AI firms can position themselves as capable competitors bringing fresh ideas to the table. DeepSeek showed that small teams with clear goals can compete successfully against industry giants, opening doors for others to follow.
For new companies, this means showing they don’t need massive resources to make meaningful contributions to AI development. Their message should focus on clever solutions and determined work, demonstrating how they’re carving out their own space in a field traditionally dominated by large corporations.
Small companies can set themselves apart by showing their ability to move quickly and solve problems creatively. Their size allows them to react faster to new trends and market needs while larger companies take time to adjust their direction. This speed and flexibility can become a significant advantage in today’s fast-moving tech sector.
Branding Challenges for US Firms
US companies like Nvidia, Google, and OpenAI must fundamentally change how they present themselves to the world. They can no longer take their position for granted and need to actively work to maintain their relevance in the changing AI and AI PR landscape.
These companies need to prioritize overarching communications strategies. As questions arise about their methods and effectiveness, they should be clear about their goals and approaches. Showing specific achievements and addressing concerns directly will help shape positive public opinion.
Finding the right tone in their messages presents another challenge. Being too confident could alienate audiences, while appearing uncertain might damage their standing in the industry. The sweet spot lies in projecting confidence while acknowledging and respecting competition.
Clear internal communication proves equally important. Everyone within these companies needs to share and understand the same vision. Mixed messages through public announcements, statements, or investor updates only create more doubt about their leadership abilities.
Communicating Across Markets
DeepSeek’s success highlights the need for messages that work across different cultures and regions. While US companies traditionally shaped tech discussions, DeepSeek proves that good ideas can come from anywhere in the world.
To stay competitive, US firms need to develop campaigns that connect with various audiences worldwide. They must realize that one message doesn’t work for everyone – companies must understand and address what matters in different regions. Being well-known isn’t enough anymore; companies must actively engage with markets on their terms.
DeepSeek gained international respect by focusing on results rather than location. US companies would benefit from following this example, making sure their message appeals to broad audiences across different cultures and markets.
The success of DeepSeek shows that AI development happens everywhere, not just in traditional tech hubs. US companies must show they value expertise and partnerships globally. Failing to recognize the importance of international collaboration could limit their reach and access to markets.
Adapting to a New Reality
DeepSeek’s emergence marks a turning point in AI development. US tech leaders must rethink their strategies and messages, while new companies can learn valuable lessons about challenging established practices and making their mark in the industry.
As the field continues to evolve, how companies communicate their story will become increasingly important. Success will come to those who can communicate effectively, stay adaptable, and build connections with people worldwide.
The future belongs to companies that can demonstrate real results and speak meaningfully to different audiences. DeepSeek proved that past rules don’t determine future success – creating new approaches does. Every company, regardless of size, must prove their worth at AI’s forefront through concrete actions rather than just words.

BigQuery Omni Cuts Multi-cloud Log Ingestion, Analysis Costs

What is BigQuery Omni?
BigQuery Omni is a multi-cloud data analytics solution that lets you use BigLake tables to perform BigQuery analytics on data kept in Azure Blob Storage or Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3). It offers a single interface for analyzing data from several public clouds, removing the need to relocate data and allowing you to learn from your data no matter where it is stored.
Many businesses use several public clouds to store their data. Due to the difficulty of gaining insights from all of the data, this data frequently becomes siloed. To evaluate the data, you need a multi-cloud data tool that is quick, affordable, and doesn’t contribute to the costs of decentralized data governance. With a single interface, BigQuery Omni helps us to lower these frictions.
Connecting to Amazon S3 or Blob Storage is a must for performing BigQuery analytics on your external data. You would need to establish a BigLake table that refers data from Blob Storage or Amazon S3 in order to query external data.
Additionally, data can be moved between clouds using cross-cloud transfer, or it can be queried between clouds using cross-cloud joins. One cross-cloud analytics option that BigQuery Omni provides is the freedom to replicate data as needed and the ability to examine data where it resides.
Google BigQuery Omni
Operating hundreds of separate applications across multiple platforms is not unusual in today’s data-centric enterprises. The enormous amount of logs generated by these applications poses a serious problem for log analytics. Furthermore, accuracy and retrieval are made more difficult by the widespread use of multi-cloud solutions, since the dispersed nature of the logs may make it more difficult to derive valuable insights.
In contrast to a traditional strategy, BigQuery Omni was created to help solve this problem and lower overall expenditures. We’ll go over the specifics in this blog post.
Log analysis includes a number of steps, including:
Gathering log data: gathers log data from the applications and/or infrastructure of the enterprise. A popular method for gathering this data is to save it in an object storage program like Google Cloud Storage in JSONL file format. It can be prohibitively expensive to move raw log data between clouds in a multi-cloud setup.
Normalization of log data: Various infrastructures and applications produce distinct JSONL files. The fields in each file are specific to the program or infrastructure that produced it. To make data analysis easier, these disparate fields are combined into a single set, which enables data analysts to do thorough and effective studies throughout the environment.
Indexing and storage: To lower storage and query expenses and improve query performance, normalized data should be stored effectively. Logs are often stored in a compressed columnar file format, such as Parquet.
Querying and visualization: Enable enterprises to run analytics queries to find known threads, abnormalities, or anti-patterns in the log data through querying and visualization.
Data lifecycle: While storage expenses persist, the usefulness of log data declines with age. A data lifecycle procedure must be established in order to maximize costs. Archiving logs after a month (it is rare to query log data older than a month) and deleting them after a year are usual practices. This strategy ensures that crucial data is always available while efficiently controlling storage expenses.
A common Architecture
Many businesses use the following architecture to apply log analysis in a multi-cloud setting:Image credit to Google Cloud
This architecture has advantages and disadvantages.
On the Plus side:
Data lifecycle: By utilizing pre-existing functionality from object storage solutions, data lifecycle management may be implemented really easily. For instance, you can provide the following data lifecycle policy in Cloud Storage: You can use the following policies: (a) delete any item older than a week, which will remove any JSONL files that were available during the Collection process; (b) archive any object older than a month, which will also remove your Parquet files; and (c) delete any object older than a year, which will also remove your Parquet files.
Minimal egress costs: By storing the data locally, you can avoid transmitting large amounts of unprocessed information between cloud providers.
From the negative perspective:
Normalization of log data: You will code and manage an Apache Spark workload for every application with logs you gather. In a time when (a) engineers are in short supply and (b) the use of microservices is expanding quickly, it is wise to steer clear of this.
Querying: You can’t do as much analysis and visualization if you spread your data over several cloud providers.
Querying: Using WHERE clauses to prevent partitions with archived files requires human error and is not a simple solution for excluding archived files created earlier in the data lifetime. Managing the table’s manifest by adding and removing divisions as necessary is one way to work with Iceberg Table. However, it is difficult to play with the Iceberg Table manifest by hand, and using a third-party solution only makes things more expensive.
A better way to address all of these issues would be to use BigQuery Omni, which is shown in the architecture below.
This method’s primary advantage is the removal of several Spark workloads and the need for software engineers to code and maintain them. Having a single product (BigQuery) manage the entire process, aside from storage and visualization, is another advantage of this system. You gain from cost savings as well. Below, we’ll go into more detail about each of these points.
An streamlined procedure for normalizing
The ability of BigQuery to automatically determine the schema of JSONL files and generate an external table pointing to them is a valuable feature. This function is especially helpful when working with multiple log schema formats. The JSONL content of any application can be accessed by defining a simple CREATE TABLE declaration.
Once there, you may program BigQuery to export the JSONL external table into compressed Parquet files in Hive format that are divided into hourly segments. An EXPORT DATA statement that may be programmed to execute once every hour is shown in the query below. This query’s SELECT statement only records the log data that was ingested during the previous hour and transforms it into a Parquet file with columns that have been normalized.
DECLARE hour_ago_rounded_string STRING; DECLARE hour_ago_rounded_timestamp DEFAULT DATETIME_TRUNC(TIMESTAMP_SUB(CURRENT_TIMESTAMP(), INTERVAL 1 HOUR), HOUR);
SET (hour_ago_rounded_string) = ( SELECT AS STRUCT FORMAT_TIMESTAMP(“%Y-%m-%dT%H:00:00Z”, hour_ago_rounded_timestamp, “UTC”) );
EXPORT DATA OPTIONS ( uri = CONCAT(‘[MY_BUCKET_FOR_PARQUET_FILES]/ingested_date=’, hour_ago_rounded_string, ‘/logs-*.parquet’), format = ‘PARQUET’, compression = ‘GZIP’, overwrite = true) AS ( SELECT [MY_NORMILIZED_FIELDS] EXCEPT(ingested_date) FROM [MY_JSONL_EXTERNAL_TABLE] as jsonl_table WHERE DATETIME_TRUNC(jsonl_table.timestamp, HOUR) = hour_ago_rounded_timestamp );
A uniform querying procedure for all cloud service providers
While using the same data warehouse platform across several cloud providers already improves querying, BigQuery Omni’s ability to perform cross-cloud joins is revolutionary for Log Analytics. Combining log data from many cloud providers was difficult prior to BigQuery Omni. Sending the raw data to a single master cloud provider results in large egress expenses due to the volume of data; yet, pre-processing and filtering it limits your capacity to do analytics on it. Cross-cloud joins allow you to execute a single query across several clouds and examine the outcomes.
Reduces TCO
This architecture’s ability to lower total cost of ownership (TCO) is its last and most significant advantage. There are 3 ways to measure this:
Decreased engineering resources: Apache Spark is eliminated from this procedure for two reasons. The first is that Spark code can be worked on and maintained without a software developer. By employing standard SQL queries, the log analytics team can complete the deployment process more quickly. The shared responsibility concept of BigQuery and BigQuery Omni, which are PaaS, is extended to data in AWS and Azure.
Lower compute resources: The most economical environment might not always be provided by Apache Spark. The application itself, the Apache Spark platform, and the virtual machine (VM) make up an Apache Spark solution. In comparison to Apache Spark, BigQuery uses slots (virtual CPUs, not virtual machines) and an export query that is transformed into C-compiled code during the export process can lead to quicker performance for this particular operation.
Lower egress expenses: BigQuery Omni eliminates the need to transfer raw data between cloud providers in order to get a consolidated view of the data by processing data in-situ and egressing only results through cross-cloud joins.
What is the best way to use BigQuery in this setting?
BigQuery has two compute pricing models for query execution:
On-demand pricing (per TiB): This pricing model charges you according to the quantity of bytes each query processes, but it does not charge you for the first 1 TiB of query data handled each month. Using this technique is not advised because log analytics tasks use a lot of data.
Capacity pricing (per slot-hour): Under this pricing model, you are billed for the amount of computing power that is utilized to execute queries over time, expressed in slots (virtual CPUs). This model utilizes editions of BigQuery. Slot commitments, which are dedicated capacity always available for your workloads, are less expensive than on-demand, and you can use the BigQuery autoscaler.
In order to conduct an empirical test, Google assigned 100 slots (baseline 0, maximum slots 100) to a project that aimed to export log JSONL data into a compressed Parquet format. This configuration allowed BigQuery to process 1PB of data daily without using up all 100 slots.
In order to enable the TCO reduction of Log Analytics workloads in a multi-cloud context, it proposed an architecture in this blog post that substitutes SQL queries running on BigQuery Omni for Apache Spark applications. Your particular data environment may benefit from this method’s ability to minimize overall DevOps complexity while lowering engineering, computation, and egress expenses.

How Many Jobs Are Available in Oil Refining and Marketing in 2024?

Oil Refining and Marketing is an enormous industry. Every barrel of crude oil or natural gas produced today must first be refined before being made available for consumption. Many jobs in this sector involve technical roles like geologists and drilling engineers. Other positions focus on sales and compliance; those with strong problem-solving abilities can quickly rise through the ranks. 1. Chemical Engineer Chemical engineers are responsible for designing and implementing chemical-based industrial processes, making them essential in creating many of the products we rely on every day. Their role may range from developing affordable medications that are safe, effective, and produced safely; creating innovative food processing techniques so more is available to people; to energy technologies that reduce pollution for a greener tomorrow for all. Chemical engineering is an exceptionally rewarding field that offers incredible career possibilities and salary potential. A Bachelor's degree can open doors into manufacturing, energy production and use, finance, science, and medicine; additionally, it could open doors into research and development roles in academia. Chemical engineering degrees cover an extensive array of subjects, such as applied maths, thermodynamics, chemistry, fluid mechanics, and energy transfer technologies. Students also usually learn principles related to plant design and construction and chemical reaction kinetics. Many chemical engineering graduates find jobs in the oil and gas industry, either as petrochemical engineers or plant technicians. Their roles involve working with petroleum products to meet customers' needs. If your ambition is global networking and career expansion, working abroad could provide invaluable experience in different professional environments and cultures. It is wise to research companies thoroughly before applying, to make sure their values match your own. 2. Petroleum Engineer Oil will always be necessary in today's globalized world; it provides fuel for transportation and heat in homes and businesses alike, as well as being used as raw material in producing plastics, rubber, detergents, pharmaceutical drugs, cosmetics bubble gum, and paints. Recognizing and recovering our world's oil resources are paramount; petroleum engineers play a pivotal role in making extraction safe while being environmentally sensitive during the extraction process; keeping fuel prices affordable as they contribute towards energy independence and energy independence. Petroleum engineers design equipment to extract oil from reservoirs - deep pockets of rock that contain crude oil - while also analyzing geologic and engineering data to optimize drilling and production operations. Their work takes them around the globe wherever there is oil or natural gas production; from Arctic regions, jungles, oceans, or even American shale formations where they could find themselves extracting oil. Petroleum engineers typically require a bachelor's degree in engineering. Many schools offer cooperative education programs to allow students to gain practical experience while earning academic credit. The median annual wage for petroleum engineers was $131,800 in 2022, and their employment is expected to increase 2 percent by 2032 - roughly in line with all occupations. Due to global demand, salaries and job prospects for petroleum engineers tend to increase during economic expansions; however, they can decline during slowdowns or when oil prices decline significantly. Furthermore, petroleum engineering is one of the few professions with mass layoffs during oil price decreases; when this occurs it can be challenging to find new work within their respective industry but the skills learned as a petroleum engineer are highly transferrable. 3. Marketing Manager Marketing managers are responsible for overseeing the creation of quality content that draws traffic to online platforms and ensures product positioning and branding. Furthermore, they play an integral part in raising the profile of their company across various social media channels while simultaneously overseeing marketing campaigns effectively and testing innovative marketing solutions while troubleshooting any that don't perform to standard. Refining is an integral component of the oil and gas industry, where raw crude oil is processed into various petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel, and kerosene for sale to end-users such as commercial stations or airports. Refineries typically belong to integrated oil and gas companies; however, independent refining and marketing companies also exist. The global oil refining market is being propelled forward by rising investments in building, expanding, and upgrading refineries. Furthermore, growing regulations regarding carbon emissions as well as positive projections in aviation and road transportation sectors also serve as major catalysts. Refineries are capital-intensive businesses that take between 10-20 years to break even, making them susceptible to cyclicality, with supply and demand fluctuations leading them down both paths of expansion. Growth beyond 2022 proved challenging. 4. Technical Director Technical directors are key members of any company's senior leadership. They oversee its engineering department and oversee the development process; coordinate with other teams and departments to ensure projects are completed; assess risks; and mitigate them accordingly. Technical directors are ideal leaders when they enjoy taking charge of large-scale projects and possess a high degree of self-motivation. Technical directors tend to be very organized individuals, possessing outstanding interpersonal skills necessary for liaising with senior team members as well as the ability to convey technical expertise so others understand it better. Technical Directors require at least a bachelor's degree in an appropriate discipline such as computer science or engineering, while in some instances master's degrees may also be necessary. Furthermore, these candidates should possess experience managing engineering companies successfully as well as the ability to make swift decisions and adapt quickly in changing circumstances. Oil and gas industries are vulnerable to economic fluctuations and geopolitical events, which may sway hiring practices and investment decisions. Yet the industry still offers abundant job opportunities for those with appropriate credentials - from drilling operations in the Permian Basin to roles supporting sustainable and renewable energy initiatives. Technical directorship can be an ideal position for those with leadership abilities and an interest in cutting-edge technologies. As technical director, your main responsibilities will include making sure company products are developed on schedule and budget as well as communicating your vision to a team of engineers working for the organization. 5. Executive Account Manager Executive account managers (EMs) play an essential role in understanding client needs and fulfilling them effectively, but their job doesn't end there: in addition to this primary duty, AMs also coordinate any potential problems and address any that arise; identify opportunities for upselling/cross-selling services to customers to maximize total revenue generated from a customer relationship; discuss contract renewals with clients as necessary and manage renewal processes as necessary. As part of your duties in this position, you will collaborate closely with other team members in the department. Your colleagues could include sales administrators, project managers, and telemarketing representatives; your daily responsibilities could range anywhere from evaluating customer needs to making personalized recommendations to them. Your duties could also involve working closely with the marketing department to develop and deliver new products and services, becoming familiar with several software programs, and participating in preparing company reports. Your pay will depend on both your level of experience and firm size. Oil and gas industries are highly competitive fields with multiple positions available for qualified individuals. To succeed in this environment, exceptional communication skills and lifelong learning must be your priorities if you wish to advance in this industry. Staying abreast of changes to the energy landscape will also aid your career advancement; flexible career planning strategies such as strong professional networks will enable you to overcome monetary slumps more easily while finding suitable roles will prove key in finding their role within this dynamic sector. An Epidemic of Sleeplessness
The pitfalls of getting insufficient shut-eye
Back as college students, we may have taken great pride in getting by with only five or six hours of sleep per night. Staying up late studying, waking up early to get a head start on that lab report… Some of these practices may have stayed with us up to this day. Evidently, insufficient sleep does not only impair your creativity and productivity at work, but also negatively impacts your cardiovascular system, immune system, reproductive system, metabolism, cognitive abilities, emotional stability, and genetic material. In brief, insufficient sleep is a perfect recipe for a shortened, lower-quality life.
Interestingly, over the span of a century, human beings have abandoned their biologically evolved sleep habits that took Mother Nature 3.4 million years to instil. Industrialization led us to wake up unnaturally (through factory whistles and later alarm clocks) and also stay up for much longer due to the advent of incandescent light bulbs, delaying the trigger signal that leads to the onset of sleep. As a result, our society is now in a silent sleeplessness epidemic that has catastrophic impacts on our health, life expectancy, safety, productivity, and education.
Sleep is governed by a variety of biological and chemical factors, the onset of which is determined by the release of melatonin. However, the two main factors that govern wake and sleep are 1) your circadian rhythm and 2) sleep pressure, represented by the build-up of adenosine in your brain while awake. Once asleep, adenosine levels rapidly decline, resembling the discharge of a capacitor. The greater the distance between the adenosine levels (high) and the circadian rhythm (low), the greater the urge to sleep (see figure below).
Sleep can be broadly divided into rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep and non-REM (NREM) sleep. While NREM sleep seems to be important for memory consolidation, REM sleep plays a vital role in integrating those newly formed memories into existing ones as well as nurturing emotional, social, and creative capabilities. Interestingly, during NREM sleep, the themes you experienced while awake seem to be replayed in an autobiographical fashion, only much faster, as can be seen by investigating the brain waves during this period. As Walker writes:
When it comes to information processing, think of the wake state principally as reception (experiencing and constantly learning the world around you), NREM sleep as reflection (storing and strengthening those raw ingredients of new facts and skills), and REM sleep as integration (interconnecting these raw ingredients with each other, with all past experiences, and, in doing so, building an ever more accurate model of how the world works, including innovative insights and problem-solving abilities).
It is worth noting that, apart from information reflection and integration, NREM and REM sleep are integral for a much wider array of restorative tasks. However, these tasks are well beyond the scope of this article.
Throughout this book, Walker emphasizes the importance of sleep and how detrimental a lack of it can be, for all parties involved. Here is a brief summary of the most sobering findings:
The cognitive abilities of people being awake for 19 hours are the same as those of people being legally drunk (.08% blood alcohol). Bear that in mind when getting behind the wheel.
Vehicular accidents due to drowsy driving exceed those caused by alcohol and drugs combined.
The event of daylight savings time in the spring (losing one hour of sleep) leads to a spike of heart attacks the following day. Conversely, the same event in the fall (gaining one our of sleep) leads to a dramatic decrease of heart attacks the next day.
If you are dieting while under-slept, 70% of the weight lost will come from lean body mass, not fat.
We know that the circadian rhythm shifts forward in teenagers. Yet, the early school start times of the current educational system forces them to wake up at these ungodly hours, knowing very well that this leads to severe underperformance due to the cutting short of REM sleep, which occurs in the early morning hours.
Sleep deprivation not only leads to more caloric intake (typically around 300 more calories compared to well-rested individuals), but also to much unhealthier choices (more carbohydrates and sugars instead of leafy greens and proteins).
Just one short night of sleep (four hours) sweeps away 70% of natural killer cells circulating in your immune system. These cells are responsible for killing malignant (cancerous) tumor cells.
Well-rested employees perform much better than sleep-deprived ones. Yet, many companies overvalue under-slept employees, thinking, erroneously, that these “hard-working” individuals get more done and thus create more value for the company.
Sleeping pills do not induce natural sleep, but rather put you into a mild state of anaesthesia, which does not have the restorative capabilities of natural sleep.
Surgeons who only slept six hours the night before the operation are 170% more likely to make a grave surgical error than their well-rested counterparts who got eight hours of shut-eye.
According to Walker, a healthy seven to nine hours of sleep per night is the cheapest medicine there is and can prevent many of the harmful consequences outlined above. In his own words:
It is time for us to reclaim our right to a full night of sleep, without embarrassment or the damaging stigma of laziness. In doing so, we can be reunited with that most powerful elixir of wellness and vitality, dispensed through every conceivable biological pathway. Then we may remember what it feels like to be truly awake during the day, infused with the very deepest plenitude of being.

“Raymond Cattell, who in the early 1940s introduced the concepts of fluid and crystallized intelligence. Cattell defined fluid intelligence as the ability to reason, analyze, and solve novel problems—what we commonly think of as raw intellectual horsepower. Innovators typically have an abundance of fluid intelligence. It is highest relatively early in adulthood and diminishes starting in one’s 30s and 40s. This is why tech entrepreneurs, for instance, do so well so early, and why older people have a much harder time innovating.
Crystallized intelligence, in contrast, is the ability to use knowledge gained in the past. Think of it as possessing a vast library and understanding how to use it. It is the essence of wisdom. Because crystallized intelligence relies on an accumulating stock of knowledge, it tends to increase through one’s 40s, and does not diminish until very late in life.
Careers that rely primarily on fluid intelligence tend to peak early, while those that use more crystallized intelligence peak later. For example, Dean Keith Simonton has found that poets—highly fluid in their creativity—tend to have produced half their lifetime creative output by age 40 or so. Historians—who rely on a crystallized stock of knowledge—don’t reach this milestone until about 60.
Here’s a practical lesson we can extract from all this: No matter what mix of intelligence your field requires, you can always endeavor to weight your career away from innovation and toward the strengths that persist, or even increase, later in life.”

The WWE bubble
From the rundown of WWE’s 2018 financial report in this week’s Observer:
From WrestleMania to the end of the year in 2016, [WWE Network] subscribers fell 51,000. In 2017 that decline was 190,000. In 2018, that decline was 280,000. That explains why this year WWE will not announce the subscriber number after WrestleMania, so such a decline won’t be able to be tracked.
Don’t kid yourself by thinking this decline doesn’t matter. People joke a lot about wrestling fans saying they’ll “leave forever” and then coming back, but this is evidence of fans leaving a whole lot faster than they’re coming back. Just like the TV ratings that have inched downwards for years.
Now, the talking point I keep hearing from the Wrestling Observer guys is that the money Saudi Arabia paid for Crown Jewel more than makes up for the people who quit the WWE Network that month. The implication being, whatever protest there was over Crown Jewel had no effect on WWE’s bottom line, so the effort was pointless. It’s not.
Whether the reason is Crown Jewel, Brock Lesnar, or bad booking in general, subscriber numbers are steadily declining. If the trend continues, at some point the Saudis are going wonder why they’re paying tons of money for WWE to make them look good on shows that almost nobody watches. Along the same lines, the enormous sum Fox paid for Smackdown assumes WWE is a live TV ratings powerhouse. If more and more people DVR Smackdown or skip it entirely, Fox is going to decide it bought a lemon. These giant revenue streams could suddenly evaporate if live viewership reaches a tipping point. So the audience has leverage here, even if nobody wants you to notice that.
The nightmare scenario would be if WWE suddenly loses Saudi Arabia and Fox while hemorrhaging Network subscriptions and posting record low ratings. Stock prices would tank and the value of their TV rights would drop. The entire “WWE doesn’t have to sell tickets or draw ratings to be profitable” model would collapse.
Don’t mistake this for a rah-rah “AEW will save us” speech. If WWE’s bubble bursts, it’ll cause damage to the industry that AEW can’t stop. It may even limit AEW’s ability to take off. And of course, AEW could possibly get their heads up their asses and forming the same kind of “fuck the fans/get paid for having loyal fans” bubble. This is not an issue you solve by defeating WWE.
My point (and I do have one) is that WWE doesn’t want you to think you control them, but you kinda do. They didn’t send the McMahons out there on the 12/17 Raw because there isn’t a problem, and they didn’t kiss your ass because you’re not part of the solution. They know they can’t sustain their bubble without your support. They know you matter to their bottom line. Feel free to act like it.

How to Scale Your Business Using Data Analytics
How to Scale Your Business Using Data Analytics
Scaling can be scary if you don’t have the data to back it up. Every entrepreneur who is backed by investors can scale their business overnight, but doing it right so that you don’t lose money while doing so, is tough. Data analytics is visualizing raw data that’s collected from your business operations, customers, and vendors to analyze and predict future trends to scale your business accordingly. Here you can learn ways to using data analytics to scale your business: Productivity Improvement Companies often suffer from a lack of efficient internal process management which keeps them from scaling. Not having enough employees and lacking in logistics can be the issues that an expanding company faces when trying to achieve its goals. Each stage of your business operation is a data point and a potential bottleneck. If you don’t have enough data on your warehouses, inventory, shipping, and especially complaints, analyzing them for optimizing the operations won’t be possible. By having data analytics on every point of your operation, you can gain better knowledge about your inefficiencies. And get a better view of what needs to be done. Bottlenecks not only restrict your operations but also hinder customer satisfaction. They can also impact your potential to scale by restricting the production or customer onboarding. With ample data on every point, you can identify the points. And find where performance isn’t optimum and find out why the issues exist. You can become more active in solving issues with data. Customer Personalization Data is driving today’s competitive world. A company that still isn’t using data to drive its business and marketing strategies, might already have been left behind by its competitors. To understand what the customer thinks, what they like, and what they want, data is the most important element. As poor data costs the US economy $3.1trillion yearly, each company that has the resources and ability to peek into the customer’s life, set up multiple data points for each customer to give them personalized recommendations. The data points can vary from store inventory, previous purchases, to even their choice of commute. Depending on the product the company sells, these data points may include more unconventional elements that are required to analyze each customer. These data analytics are used to personalize each notification, recommendation, and email the client receives. Some organizations also customize their websites to fit each customer better. The introduction of AI and machine learning has also helped companies achieve scaling goals with help of data analytics In the future, where customers will have a massive number of solutions for every issue they incur, having a personal touch with them will become a necessity. Saving on Resources to Gain More Revenue By Using Data Analytics Despite the promise of growing revenue, scaling your business can be expensive. In most cases, the expense directly correlates with the number of additional employees and resources you will need. Although scaling is about committing more assets to generate more revenue, the curve shouldn’t be linear. Every business tries to generate more revenue without investing an equal amount. Business analysts help tackle the problem that most entrepreneurs face. They think that they need to keep spending more to generate more revenue, which saturates or even declines their profit. Deep diving into your data points to cut out extravagant expenses will considerably improve your cash flow and leave you with a better return on investment. Your data analytics also helps you determine which demographic has the highest potential to spend on your product. Many of the companies–after utilizing their data–have enjoyed manifold growth by targeting the correct demographics without spending equally. Re-Developing Your Product You can’t produce the perfect product in the first go. Even if you do, the changing market scenario would soon deem your product obsolete in no time. Scaling your business with a product that’s not relevant anymore, will be challenging. Data analytics help incorporate market feedback in your product by exposing the elements that the customers like and dislike. With the information, you can either tweak the product, change the marketing strategy, or even re-develop the products as per your convenience. Having data analytics by your side, you’d also be able to analyze the predictive cost of re-developing and re-marketing your product. Which would help you make informed decisions about the operational aspects of your business. Scaling With Data Transparency More than using data to analyze the business, this strategy is considered by companies to market their brand using statistics. Most public companies have to publish their financial and business data to their shareholders for the sake of transparency. As their growing profit margin helps pump the stocks, your flattering stats can also help market your brand. Positive stats will not only build trust and loyalty in your customers but will also help you scale your company by obtaining new leads parallelly. Cybersecurity and Scaling Server breaches are destructive for any scaling company. As nowadays every company stores data of their customers. And as the customers know about it, a data breach can be disastrous or even crippling to the company. Whereas, a company with no history of data breach and robust cybersecurity measures gains the trust and loyalty of their customers to scale their operations even more. It has even come to this. Investors and customers want to do business with companies that have a healthy security system in place. Data analytics are helpful for proactively determining the best approach in the event of a breach. Talent Acquisition Strategies Without employees whose interests and talent go in parallel with your company’s goals, scaling might become challenging. With AI, data analytics, and machine learning, the companies are acquiring and retaining talents that they deem valuable for their future endeavors. Using data analytics to recruit employees might still be a stigma. Because of the absence of emotion and human touch these systems lack, major companies are using data in their recruitment process to locate the best talents in the market for particular roles. Although it still isn’t worth taking the risk to use data analytics for the whole recruitment process. You can try giving it a shot for finding the candidates that your company needs and then take the help of human resources to identify the best one. The Bottom Line Data analytics can help you gain and retain customers and aid you to scale your business. From productivity improvement to talent acquisition, from customer personalization to resource-saving measures... Data analytics are helping businesses take discomfiting scaling decisions comfortably. Scaling isn’t spending more to generate more revenue, it’s about generating more without spending an equal amount of money. Take the assistance from data analytics to achieve that and grow beyond expectation. Read the full article

The Unsung Power Of Phosphatidylserine
It is amazing to me how little credit we give phosphatidylserine (PS).
This simple phospholipid has the power to support brain cell formation and to regulate proper brain cell cycling.
Its benefits have been demonstrated beyond a reasonable doubt. Scientific study after scientific study have been publishing attesting to its immense potential as a cognitive enhancer.
So many studies have found the same thing that I have no problem telling people that it definitely works – unlike so many other substances, PS actually supports brain function.
It is relatively easy to get hold of, and it is seemingly very safe to consume – even long-term.
Yet only a minority of people are using this stuff.
Many people could benefit from PS supplementation, but by and large these people have no idea that this is the case.
So let’s take a look at phosphatidylserine and see why this stuff really deserves to be in everybody’s stack.
A Look At The Science
I don’t make any claims about supplements unless I’m able to back them up with empirical evidence.
I don’t just regurgitate the claims made by manufacturers.
I don’t look for bloggers who back up what I want to believe and use them as references.
That’s a totally irresponsible way to approach brain supplementation. Doing that will inevitably see you losing a lot of money, and might even put your health at risk.
If you limit yourself to the latest scientific research, you’ll be in a much better position to make good decisions.
Thankfully, phosphatidylserine has a lot of hard, independent scientific backing.
First of all, let’s look at ameliorating cognitive decline.
This study found that 300mg of PS supplementation was able to significantly reduce the memory complaints of older Japanese people. The authors concluded: “Soy-PS used in this study is considered as safety food ingredient and 6 months of Soy-PS supplementation could improve the memory functions of the elderly with memory complaints.”
Another study, published in Psychopharmacology Bulletin in 1992, looked at PS and its ability to slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease. The authors found the following: “Results suggest that phosphatidylserine may be a promising candidate for study in the early stages of AD.”
The authors noted that the best results were observed in people with less severe cognitive impairment. Phosphatidylserine’s effects are increasingly limited when you are dealing with more and more advanced cognitive impairment.
It is important to note that these researchers do not suggest that PS may be a cure for Alzheimer’s Disease. This is an incredibly complex disease that we don’t yet fully understand, and there is no known cure. It just seems that PS might help ameliorate some of the symptoms of AD.
So what about younger people?
Well, phosphatidylserine has actually been shown to have a meaningful impact on cognitive function in young people too.
This study, published in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics in 2014, looked at whether phosphatidylserine supplementation had any impact on the symptoms of children with ADHD.
The results were fascinating: “PS significantly improved ADHD symptoms and short-term auditory memory in children. PS supplementation might be a safe and natural nutritional strategy for improving mental performance in young children suffering from ADHD.”
Another study looked at the effects of PS supplementation on resistance-trained, college-aged men. As this study looked at healthy volunteers between the ages of 18 and 30, it may prove to be more enlightening to the people reading this article!
These researchers reached very similar conclusions to the other studies looking at PS and cognitive function: “PS supplementation significantly increased cognitive function prior to exercise. Improved cognitive function could benefit athletes and non-athletes alike. PS did not appear to affect mood or endocrine response prior to or following resistance exercise.”
So it looks like PS really works.
But why?
What does it do?
What Phosphatidylserine Does
PS has multiple different functions in the body.
Of these, the most commonly discussed is its role in cell membrane formation.
Phosphatidylserine is found in great abundance in cell membranes.
It actually covers your nerve cell membranes, as well as the myelin sheaths which wrap around the axons projecting from your neurons.
These axons are basically the “communication cables” between neurons. As you can see from the diagram below, they lead from the neuron to the synaptic terminals, which transfer electro-chemical signals from their neuro to another neuron or to another effector cell.

That phosphatidylserine forms a large proportion of this myelin sheath, as well as forming an important part of the cell membrane itself, is no small matter.
Without sufficient levels of PS, we simply couldn’t produce enough of the neurons, axons, or protective myelin sheaths. We would therefore leave our brain operating under its potential capacity.
As this study states, the importance of PS for general cognitive function is well known. Its role as a raw material in the construction of brain nerve cells (or neurons) is a major reason for this. Supplementation with PS is an effective way to ensure that we have enough of the stuff to keep our brains operating at 100% capacity.
In the words of the study authors: “Phosphatidylserine is required for healthy nerve cell membranes and myelin. Aging of the human brain is associated with biochemical alterations and structural deterioration that impair neurotransmission. Exogenous PS (300-800 mg/d) is absorbed efficiently in humans, crosses the blood-brain barrier, and safely slows, halts, or reverses biochemical alterations and structural deterioration in nerve cells.”
The authors went on to say: “It supports human cognitive functions, including the formation of short-term memory, the consolidation of long-term memory, the ability to create new memories, the ability to retrieve memories, the ability to learn and recall information, the ability to focus attention and concentrate, the ability to reason and solve problems, language skills, and the ability to communicate. It also supports locomotor functions, especially rapid reactions and reflexes.”

But what’s more interesting to me is the fact that PS seems to be involved in cell signalling.
More specifically, PS is thought to play a role in apoptosis (programmed cell death).
As this article explains, phosphatidylserine seems to be at least partly responsible for the triggering of cell destruction.
Basically, when cells are ready to end their life cycle, phosphatidylserine begins to appear on the outer leaf of the cell’s membrane: “Exposure of phosphatidylserine on the outer leaflet of the plasma membrane is a surface change common to many apoptotic cells.”
Phagocytes (immune cells) seem to recognize the appearance of PS on the outside of the membrane, and they begin to “attack” the cell, destroying it and ending its life cycle.
This is really fascinating to me right now.
If PS is involved in making sure that apoptosis occurs properly and at the right time, then it definitely ranks among the best natural nootropics in existence.
Properly functioning apoptosis is absolutely necessary if you want to stay healthy and functional for as long as possible.
If your brain cells aren’t dying when they need to, then you will have gradually have more and more degraded brain cells carrying out your cognitive functions. If these cells aren’t destroyed and removed, then new, healthy, more efficient cells can’t be grown in their place!
More work is needed here, obviously.
That’s always true.
But as it stands, PS looks like it is going to turn out to be one of the most effective natural nootropic substances in existence.
It is safe and well tolerated.
You don’t need large amounts to see benefits.
It is relatively cheap and widely available.
That more people don’t use this substance to enhance long-term cognitive performance is a total mystery, and a tragedy!

The Chemistry of Life: The Plastic in Cars
Even if cars soon start running entirely on electricity or hydrogen, they'll still need 100 gallons or more of oil to make their plastic parts, such as seats, dashboards, bumpers, and engine components. And some day that plastic may be recycled back into fuel.
Cars of old were mostly steel, but the use of lightweight alternatives has dramatically increased in the last couple of decades. Whereas almost no plastic could be found on a car from the 1950s, today's automobiles have more than 260 pounds (120 kilograms) of plastic on board, according to the Transportation Energy Data Book.
"It is expected that high oil prices and strict CO2 standards will accelerate the growth [in plastic use]," says Aafko Schanssema from PlasticsEurope, a plastic industry group based in Belgium.
Plastics improve fuel economy by reducing weight, but they also require petroleum as a raw ingredient.
"Plastics are in fact solidified oil," Schanssema explained.
Although different plastics have different recipes, it takes roughly 0.4 gallons of crude oil to make 1 pound of plastic. Globally, around 8 percent of the oil that comes out of the ground is used to make plastic.
The average car is a mix of materials: glass windows, rubber tires, lead batteries, copper wires, as well as traces of zinc, magnesium, tin, platinum and cobalt.
However, steel is still the single most important material in cars. It is strong, durable and malleable. On the flip side, though, it is relatively heavy. For this reason, car manufacturers have been trimming down on its use.
For domestic cars, the percentage of weight in steel and iron has dropped from 75 percent in 1977 to 63 percent in 2004, according to the Department of Energy's Transportation Energy Data Book.
Some of the steel has been replaced by lightweight aluminum, whose percentage has grown from 2.6 percent in 1977 to 8.6 percent in 2004. Plastic has seen a similar rise in prominence, going from 4.6 to 7.6 percent over the same 27-year period. (In Europe, the average car currently has closer to 11 percent plastic, Schanssema said.)
A 2005 PlasticsEurope study showed that every pound of plastic in a car replaces roughly 1.5 pounds of traditional materials.
Based on this weight reduction, the same study calculated that plastics provide a fuel savings of about 3.8 percent. However, cars haven't improved their gas mileage by that much.
"On the whole, U.S.-made cars have increased in total weight, so that whatever effect can be ascribed to plastics has been more than offset," said Michael Renner, a senior researcher for Worldwatch.
Renner thinks an emphasis on particular parts misses the bigger picture: the total size and power of new vehicles have been going in the "wrong direction" for many years. He does agree, however, that "the continued development of lightweight materials will still be critical."
Recycle plastic
Even if plastics can mitigate some of the fuel use, they are not exactly loved by environmentalists.
"The production of plastics is of course highly energy-intensive and polluting," Renner said. But he added that the same is true for steel and aluminum production.
One concern is that plastic recycling is not as fully developed as metal recycling of vehicle parts. Composite plastics are especially hard to separate and thus make available for re-use.
However, to Schanssema's thinking, this would not justify making cars from heavier metal parts,
"When looking at environmental impact from a life-cycle approach, it has been found that about 95 percent of the environmental impact of a car is during the so-called 'use phase,'" he said. "End-of-life contributes only marginally to the impact."
Besides reducing weight, plastics help to streamline the shape of vehicles, improve the performance of tires and increase the safety of windshields and fuel tanks.
Still, there are ideas for making plastics more sustainable. One way might be to use bio-degradable plastics, or ones that come from renewable resources, such as corn or sugarcane.
Another option is to recover the energy from discarded plastic parts. The company Plas2fuel, based in Washington state, can make a gallon of oil from melting down 8 pounds of plastic. In March, this process was used by Oregon-based Agri-Plas to turn plastic waste into 8,200 gallons of oil.
Ironically, then, the plastic in electric cars and fuel cell vehicles might one day be recycled into oil that could be burned in gasoline-powered cars.
We have customers ranging from manufacturing immaturity to international corporations that have as long a history in plastic parts as Rosti does. That said, we do have customers that surprise us and have been able to teach us about a particular design or material application. We value these interactions, as nothing is ever black and white. There are always compromises and trade-offs to be made. Conversely, we also have customers that believe they have “been there and done it all,” so extra care must be taken to prepare supporting evidence for our proposals. This would include simulation data, past product data, theoretical calculations, prototype tooling and other information.
Moisture conditioning Processors and end users who use nylon have become very familiar with the effects that water absorption has on that material. In applications where high loads are generated, such as in snapfit assemblies, nylon that is still close to its dry-as-molded state may exhibit brittle failure, and we have learned that this failure mode can be mitigated by conditioning the parts to bring them up to their equilibrium moisture content. This frequently solves problems with the assembly process. The moisture conditioning process takes many forms. Some simply pour a prescribed amount of water into molded parts contained in a moisture-proof package such as a polybag. Others prefer placing saturated paper towels into the package with the nylon parts and allowing the water to migrate out of the paper and into the nylon. Some go as far as boiling the parts. This not only increases the moisture uptake rate, but also ensures that the moisture is absorbed more uniformly throughout the wall of the part. While rapid moisture conditioning is a legitimate method for improving the impact resistance of nylon products, there should be concerns with using it indiscriminately. A nylon product may be temporarily brittle while it comes to equilibrium with the atmosphere. But it may also be brittle because the material has been degraded during the molding process. In such situations, the brittle condition is not simply a temporary symptom of low moisture content, but rather is a permanent condition brought about by reduced molecular weight. The problem is that this shortcoming can be covered up by pumping large amounts of moisture into the polymer. Under such conditions, the polymer becomes sufficiently flexible so that it no longer appears to be brittle. But a moisturizing process that is performed rapidly often introduces more moisture into the polymer than it can retain in the long term. If this happens, then when the excess moisture comes back out of the polymer, the brittle condition can return, usually after the part has gone into the application. Failure in the field This occurred in an application involving a critical part in a consumer product. Parts produced in an unfilled nylon 6/6 were received from the molder that appeared to be more brittle than usual. The explanation was that the parts had been molded just a few days earlier. It was winter in a northern state where the indoor humidity was very low and therefore moisture uptake was slow. The corrective action was to moisture condition the parts. However, this was done very aggressively, and the final moisture content of the conditioned parts was 3.2%. The parts worked initially, going through the assembly and testing process without any obvious problems. However, once in the field the parts began to fail. When the product was brought back in for evaluation, the moisture content of the product had declined to 1.5-1.6%. Field experience has shown that this is a consistent value that is obtained for parts that have been allowed to come to a true equilibrium with ambient surroundings. It will be higher in extremely hot, humid environments or in situations where the part is immersed in water or used in close proximity to water, but in most cases a part molded in unfilled nylon 6/6 can only hold about 1.5% water by weight. This experience contradicts a lot of the data published by material suppliers showing the conditioned moisture content at 2.5%. But much of this early work was performed using accelerated techniques that had a tendency to introduce more moisture into the polymer than it could hold in the long term. Field experience shows that values of 1.5% for an unfilled material are much closer to the norm. It is also important to emphasize that this value is by weight of polymer. If a material contains 33% glass fiber, then one-third of the polymer has been replaced by an inorganic material that is not hygroscopic, and therefore the amount of water that this compound can hold will be proportionally lower.
Cost Benefits
One of the biggest drivers of change across any industry is the cost of production. If there are lower cost alternatives that provide the same or better results, naturally a company should pursue those. When it comes to metal-to- plastic conversion, perhaps the biggest advantage of plastic parts is their ability to potentially provide an overall cost savings of 25-50% over metal.
Also, using plastic often streamlines the number of secondary operations commonly associated with metal parts and reduces the number of assembly steps required. With plastic, OEMs have the ability to combine multiple components into a single molded part design, as opposed to making numerous individual components out of metal and welding or fastening them together. OEMs can even create complex plastic parts with tight tolerances that require no secondary machining using scientific molding processes. Having fewer production steps and less assembly time can provide a significant cost savings, as well as provide more design flexibility.
Time Benefits
In addition to streamlining assembly, injection molding gives manufacturers the time-saving advantage of having the color and surface finish ready to go right out of the mold, instead of tacking on time-consuming steps afterwards, as is the case with metal parts. Also, the injection molding process typically has faster cycle times (more parts made per machine hour) than metal components, all while producing repeatable, durable parts.
Weight Benefits
Plastic parts are typically 50% lighter than their metal counterparts, and provide more production quantity — that is, you get more more parts per pound with plastic versus metal.

What Problems Exist In The Use Of Ultraviolet Sterilizing Lamp
Ultraviolet sterilizing lamp has strong sterilizing ability. It is suitable for sterilization in health, medical treatment, biological research, pharmaceutical industry and food industry. It can also be used for photochemical reaction and air disinfection in food storage and room. This product is convenient to use, simple to operate, long life and reliable effect, but the use of ultraviolet sterilization lamp still has the following problems:
1.Special technology, difficult manufacturing and high price. Due to the special nature of quartz glass, the production of sterilizing lamp cannot be large-scale, which leads to the high cost of quartz sterilizing lamp, which hinders its further popularization and application.
2. Light decay is large, not long life. The ultraviolet ray sterilization lamp that general manufacturer produces is ignited after hundreds of hours, its ultraviolet light intensity is attenuated very quickly, highest achieve 30%, sterilization effect is greatly weakened. In addition, the cathode damage during processing also affects the life of ultraviolet sterilizing lamp. Due to the different mechanism between ultraviolet sterilizing lamp and fluorescent lamp, this problem needs to be solved by all parties.
3. Because the filament and cathode material is different, and T8, T5 fluorescent lamp with the same power of UV lamp, can not use the same ballast drive.
Difference Between Quartz Ultraviolet Sterilizing Lamp And High Boron Ultraviolet Sterilizing Lamp
Ultraviolet sterilization lamp material and ultraviolet intensity have a great relationship, because of the cost of the relationship, and the use of different, also useful high borax glass tube instead. The difference between two kinds of pipes is quite big. The pure quartz tube that is made with crystal as raw material, relatively high borax is the high borax glass tube that is raw material, the effect of both differs more, price also differs more, but between two can inspect use different place, and undertake different choice.
Take 30W ultraviolet sterilizing lamp as an example:
A. high borax glass tube penetration rate <70%, recession 1000 hours <30%, radiation intensity <90uw/cm2 below. Low radiation intensity;
B. The ultraviolet transmission rate of pure quartz tube glass is more than 85% >, the decline rate of 1000 hours is less than 15%, and the radiation intensity is more than > 90um/cm2.Strong radiation intensity;
The above data are provided by our company for reference only
In summary: if you want to achieve a good effect on disinfection and sterilization, longer life of the lamp, should consider using quartz glass material uv sterilization lamp.
The Price Of Ultraviolet sterilizing lamp
Do you want to know the price of Ultraviolet sterilizing lamp. You should to know the classification of Ultraviolet sterilizing lamp. The Ultraviolet sterilizing lamp divide into UVA,UVB,UVC three wavelength. Each wavelength are different. For example: UVA is mainly used for manicure, printing and coating curing; UVB for skin treatment, plant growth mainly; UVC is mainly used for air sterilization, water treatment sterilization, other disinfection applications, and deodorization.
UVA,UVB,UVC three kinds of lamp prices and wattage, specifications, length, quality, each brand positioning is different and different.

Y’know I’ve often wondered if quintessence really is the problem and the thing our tyrannical zombies are obsessed with. Like yeah, they gather it but only to “refine it” into a purple looking thing similar to the one that possessed them --which btw there is no way wouldn’t have long term effects in their subjects. Meanwhile quintessence is hinted to be part of anything living, from Voltron and his paladins to the flowers in that now dead planet attacked by the Komar
See my thing with quintessence is–even if it’s not the refined kind, we still know that overexposure to it will drain your life-force and affect your mind. Honerva’s hair turns white, her eyes turn gold, her markings change, and she becomes noticeably haggard and weak. Not to mention the whole being obsessed with obtaining more quintessence thing:
And as for longterm affects on the other galra, I’m pretty sure that was a thing. I mean, we’re talking about a civilization with all this technology that runs on quintessence and they’re a species with prolonged exposure to it for over 10,000 years. From an evolution standpoint, that’s going to take its toll. Which is why I think a lot of galra back then had eyes with irises like this:
but now they’re all that empty glowing gold like zombie Haggar’s:
And yeah, it does seem that quintessence is the foundation for all living things. But it’s implied that this isn’t the kind of power you would harness and try to control or weaponize. My understanding was that it wasn’t until they found this source of pure quintessence in the rift that they really began experimenting with it. Alfor is impressed by how their one test can run “for a full year on one drop of quintessence with no decline in revolutions per dobosh.” He goes on to say that “No other energy source like this exists.” This leads to things like “endlessly powerful ships for the galra empire,” and “an endless source of clean energy for the entire system.”
That tells me that, until now, quintessence was never actually used as a power source. They’re entering an entirely new era here, and quintessence is this untapped, seemingly all powerful energy source. So, that being said, I also don’t think anyone really realized what sort of awful side effects prolonged exposure could cause until this point. Before, what was really holding them back was an inability to access so much raw quintessence–I mean, most Alteans aren’t just going to drain it out of aliens or planets–as well as moral concerns when it comes to respect for life (unnaturally prolonging life, playing god, messing with the “natural order,” ect). But having access to the fissure solves the first problem, and Honerva’s willingness to push the boundaries of morality in favor of her studies takes care of the latter. What they got was pretty much a perfect storm for a quintessence based civilization and also a complete disaster.
So is quintessence life? According to Honerva, yeah. And it seems to be the foundation for all life forms across every universe. That being said, it’s also inherently dangerous. You’re literally messing with someone’s life-force. And I’m guessing the reason why it can both sustain and decay is because that exchange goes both ways. If you’re continually exposed to quintessence with no sort of barrier or countermeasures, it will inevitably drain your own life-force away–provided that quintessence is drawn back to the largest source like some sort of magnetic pull. On the other hand, if you have no quintessence left to give–if you’re dead, like Honerva or her cat–then it can’t drain you, right? So, there’s only one way for that quintessence to flow. Back to you. And maybe it’s similar if you’re injured, and it’s in quintessence’s nature to heal rather than eat away when the subject is already in poor health.
I’m thinking purple quintessence is something refined by the druids because it allows for people without druid abilities to control it, but both gold and purple are inherently dangerous in large quantities. Of course, this is all just a guess.
