Ask A Genius 1125: Life and Decline
Rick Rosner: I want to talk about crystallized versus fluid intelligence, which is part of the same broad theories related to IQ. Fluid intelligence is raw problem-solving ability at its peak in young adults. The trade-off is that, as you acquire wisdom—knowledge-based expertise—this becomes crystallized intelligence. As you learn more and your brain ages, fluid intelligence is replaced by…

— WAITING ROOM IDEAS.

TABLE OF CONTENTS
the underwater grotto
the skybound library
the retro bowling alley
— THE UNDERWATER GROTTO: A WAITING ROOM OF SUBMERGED SERENITY
when you first arrive, it’s not with a splash but a weightless drift. the world around you is suspended in a quiet, shimmering blue, as if you’ve stepped into the embrace of the ocean itself—but don’t worry, you can breathe easily here. the water is more like liquid light than anything else, wrapping around you in a way that’s both warm and cool at once. it carries the scent of salt and the whisper of something ancient, like the world has been waiting just for you
THE GROTTO’S HEART. at the center of this space is the grotto itself, an expansive underwater cave sculpted by time and tide. the walls glisten with iridescent corals and bioluminescent algae, casting a soft, shifting glow that dances over every surface. stalactites drip with glowing pearls, and when you run your fingers over the walls, they hum softly, as if the grotto is alive
a large, smooth rock—almost like a natural daybed—rests in the heart of the cave, cushioned with lush, silky sea moss that adjusts perfectly to your shape when you sink into it. little fish, impossibly small and glowing like stars, swirl lazily around you, as if they, too, are waiting for something. the water moves with you but never against you, carrying you into the perfect state of weightless relaxation
SMALL, IMMERSIVE DETAILS
THE WATER’S EMBRACE. it’s not cold or suffocating—it’s soft, intentional. it moves around you like an extension of your own energy, never heavy, never overwhelming. you can float in it endlessly without ever needing to surface
SOUNDSCAPE. no overwhelming noise, just the distant song of whales, the occasional soft crackle of coral shifting, and the rhythmic lull of water moving through unseen tunnels. if you focus, you can even hear the hum of the deep sea’s energy
BIOLUMINESCENT LIGHT. the glow isn’t harsh—it pulses gently, like the heartbeat of the ocean. whenever you move, the water glows around your fingertips, tracing your presence in soft, shimmering ripples
HIDDEN NOOKS & CRANNIES. if you explore, you’ll find small alcoves filled with treasures—polished sea glass, old ship trinkets, and even delicate shells that whisper to you when you hold them close
A PORTAL OF ENDLESS POSSIBILITY. when you decide to be in your DR, a large, glowing veil of water appears at the grotto’s entrance. it doesn’t ripple like normal water—it moves like silk, waiting for you to step through. the moment you do, you find yourself in your DR
CUSTOMIZATION & PERSONALIZATION
GUARDIAN/COMPANION CREATURE. maybe a massive, lazy sea turtle that watches over you with its intelligent eyes, or a pod of dolphins that whistle and chirp excitedly when you’re about to enter your DR
KEEPSAKE. a glowing pearl or a carved piece of driftwood that you hold onto tightly, feeling like it grounds you every moment you’re there and is always waiting when you get back
DRINKS & TREATS. a goblet of glowing, sweet nectar that leaves a lingering warmth in your chest, a pearl-encrusted platter of sushi or sashimi, a crystal bowl of shrimp cocktail
A MIRROR POOL. a shallow, moonlit basin where you can gaze at yourself—not just at your physical self, but at your deeper energy and all the possibilities you can embody
ENTERING YOUR DR
when you feel ready, you don’t have to do anything drastic. when you think about your destination, the water will shift around you, pulling you gently toward the glowing veil. the grotto sighs—a promise that it will always be here when you need to return. as dappled light dances around you, moving towards the rippling curtain of light, you pass through it in only a few moments
on the other side, you realize you’re there
this waiting room is pure immersion, a space where time doesn’t rush you, where the water itself cradles you in preparation for your journey. it’s designed to be peaceful, fluid, and weightless—a soft transition between realities that feels like an extension of your own energy
— THE SKYBOUND LIBRARY: A WAITING ROOM OF INFINITE STORIES
you arrive with a gentle weightlessness, as if you’ve stepped off solid ground and into the open embrace of the sky. there’s no harsh wind, no fear of falling—just an endless expanse of soft, golden clouds stretching infinitely beneath you. the air is crisp and cool, tinged with the scent of old parchment, ink, and something subtly sweet, like vanilla and aged wood. above, an eternal twilight sky swirls with soft hues of violet, pink, and deep indigo, with stars peeking through like distant fireflies. before you, the library reveals itself
THE LIBRARY’S HEART. towering bookshelves stretch impossibly high, spiraling into the sky, growing like trees. made of dark mahogany and golden filigree, their surfaces are inscribed with delicate constellations that shift and realign every time you blink. some bookshelves float freely, drifting through the air like islands, while others form grand hallways and sweeping balconies
the books themselves glow faintly, some pulsing like they contain a heartbeat, others humming softly when you pass by. each one is a portal, a fragment of a different world, holding stories that have been told and those yet to be written.
SMALL, IMMERSIVE DETAILS
THE AIR ITSELF FEELS ALIVE. when you breathe, it fills your chest with a gentle hum of energy, a subtle reminder that this is a place of boundless possibility and knowledge
FLOATING STEPS & BRIDGES. there are no rigid pathways here—if you wish to go somewhere, the air itself solidifies beneath your feet, forming shimmering glass-like steps that guide you. some lead to secluded reading nooks, others to grand observatories where you can watch shooting stars carve their way across the heavens
A DESK THAT KNOWS YOU. near the center of the library, a massive circular desk carved from celestial marble awaits you. whenever you approach, it shifts and rearranges itself, offering exactly what you need—perhaps a blank notebook for scripting, a cup of warm jasmine tea or rich cinnamon-spiced cocoa, or a book containing the wisdom you’ve been seeking ( even if you didn’t realize you were )
SOFTLY GLOWING LANTERNS. suspended in midair, floating paper lanterns illuminate the space, each one carrying a whispered dream or memory from your desired reality. If you listen closely, you might hear echoes of stories that you haven’t been told yet, or lives you didn’t know you were going to live
A LIBRARY CAT… OR SOMETHING ELSE? a small, mischievous creature—perhaps a sleek black cat with glowing eyes, or it might be a tiny dragon made of ink and stardust—wanders the library, curling up beside you whenever you need reassurance. it doesn’t speak, but somehow, you always understand each other
CUSTOMIZATION & PERSONALIZATION
YOUR PERSONAL BOOKS. with your name embossed on the covers, volumes that contain all of your scripts, records of your journey and all of your experiences, so you can look both backwards and forwards
A TELESCOPE. in the highest tower of the library, an ornate golden telescope allows you to see glimpses of your desired reality, as if you are peeking through a tear in the universe. you can feel closer to your special people and look forward to your experiences, while also dispelling any nerves you may have by seeing it from afar ( like dipping your toes in )
A HIDDEN READING NOOK. a space just for you—perhaps a velvet window seat with endless cushions, a hammock woven from clouds, or a grand armchair that shifts to fit your comfort. think of it like your sanctuary within the sanctuary
ENTERING YOUR DR
when you decide it’s time, the library knows. you hold a single book, different every time, in your hands. its cover glows with a faint golden light, and the moment you open it, the words begin to swirl, lifting off the page and wrapping around you like a warm breeze. the ink stretches outward, forming a shimmering doorway in the air—a portal made entirely of words and possibility
you step through, and just like that, you’re there
this waiting room is designed to be infinite yet intimate, a sanctuary in the sky where knowledge, magic, and dreams intertwine. it’s a place that doesn’t just prepare you for your journey—it celebrates it, reminding you that every shift is just a new chapter, and you are the author
— THE RETRO BOWL: A WAITING ROOM WITH OLD-SCHOOL CHARM
the air is warm and faintly scented with buttered popcorn, leather seats, and the sharp tang of a well-waxed bowling lane. overhead, glowing neon signs hum softly, casting a dreamy pink-and-blue glow over the space. a jukebox in the corner spins vinyl records with a warm crackle, crooning out old-school rock, jazzy swing, or whatever tunes suit how you’re feeling. the floor beneath you is that classic checkerboard tile—smooth, cool, and impossibly clean despite decades of history. you can hear the rolling thunder of a strike and the distant ring of an old cash register, as if the place is alive, but waiting just for you
THE ALLEY’S HEART. stretching ahead, the lanes are pristine, their wooden surface glowing under rows of dimmed, flickering lightbulbs. each lane seems to go on forever, disappearing into a hazy golden glow at the far end, like they might just lead somewhere else entirely
the best part? there’s no pressure to play unless you want to. you can roll a ball and watch as it slides effortlessly into a perfect strike, or you can just sink into a booth and soak in the atmosphere. here, everything works in your favor
SMALL, IMMERSIVE DETAILS
YOUR LOCKER. off to the side, a row of old-school metal lockers stands waiting. one of them has your name on it, and when you open it, you’ll find whatever you need—maybe a comfy bomber jacket, a pair of custom bowling shoes, or even just a little note written in looping, vintage cursive that simply says, “see you soon.”
MAGIC SCOREBOARD. even if you’re not playing, the massive retro scoreboard above the lanes flickers with little messages just for you—reminders, affirmations, or even details about the DR you’re planning on going to
A SHIMMERING BALL RETURN. the bowling balls themselves are something special—one is deep violet with tiny constellations twinkling in its surface, another has a swirling ocean trapped inside. when you roll them down the lane, you catch glimpses of different realities reflected inside before they return, waiting for another turn
SNACKS & DRINKS. a cozy 1950s-style diner counter sits to the side, where a friendly ( weirdly familiar and slightly mysterious ) attendant hands out thick milkshakes, warm pretzels, and soda in shiny glass bottles. everything is exactly how you feel like you remember it—whether that’s a real memory or something straight out of a dream
A SECRET DOOR BEHIND THE JUKEBOX. if you run your fingers along the edge of the jukebox and press the right button, the wall beside it shifts. a door, lined with glowing pinstripes, slides open to reveal a hidden lounge—maybe a plush speakeasy-style room with velvet chairs and low jazz, or maybe something even stranger… a back alley leading straight into your desired reality. whatever you’d like, it’s your secret space
CUSTOMIZATION & PERSONALIZATION
YOUR BOWLING NAME. up on the old-school leaderboard, your name is displayed in flickering neon letters. maybe it’s your CR name, maybe it’s a nickname or your name in your DR, or maybe it’s a totally out-of-left-field alias that you only use in this in-between place
YOUR LUCKY BOWLING SHIRT. hanging near your locker, there’s a retro bowling shirt waiting for you. it’s embroidered with something meaningful—maybe the name of your hometown city in your DR, a lucky number, or the initials of your DR name or your s/o’s name
ABSTRACT BOWLING PARTNER. you’re not alone here. whether it’s a comforting but shadowy figure you never quite see or a laughing companion who seems to be made of light and always lands a perfect strike, there’s someone keeping you company. they might even prompt you excitedly, “you ready to go?” just before you enter your DR
ENTERING YOUR DR
when you decide it’s time, the lanes darken slightly, leaving only one lit up in a neon glow. the air hums, the jukebox plays something that feels just right, and a single bowling ball appears at your feet—this one shimmering with a portal-like swirl. your roll it, smooth and easy, and as it glides down the lane, the pins at the end don’t just fall—they dissolve into light. the entire space stretches, the ceiling fades into a cosmic expanse, and suddenly—
you’re there
this waiting room is designed to feel like a warm, nostalgic pocket of time—somewhere that’s both familiar and surreal. it’s a place where the past lingers in the best way, where every sound and detail is tuned for your comfort, and where shifting feels as smooth as rolling a perfect strike

seventeen, slytherin, sacrosanct
. . . ౨ৎ
A wand to a witch is equivalent to a companion, a friend, a confider, the sole witness to one’s darkest’s sins, a mirror to the soul’s heart…
moonlit whispering flames call upon me with all it’s ardour…It has fangs akin to a snake, but less poisonous more deadly…
a winter wood, coarse as a dawn’s sigh
with veins like paths where the stars go to die...
(ps: the veins are more silver and the tip has a little green in it)
12¾", Black Walnut wood, Thestral tail hair core, Supple flexibility.
Elegantly veined with silver, tipped with a shimmering black opal
A black walnut wand is more than ideal for sophisticated, highly intelligent witches who possess but a strong sense of truth that lies inside of their souls. Elegant, introspective. It demands a master with a clear as a july sky purpose in life. An extremely ambitious and complex witch. These witches who yield a wand made of black walnut wood are not easily deceived. Keep that in mind before you attempt a prank on them. They also hold grudges.
★
The core is of thestral tail hair. It is rare and powerful indeed, the witch whom this core chooses has been bestowed upon with a deep understanding of death and darkeness, (and trauma) melancholy is her mate, sombreness her shadow…this core produces magic which is highly misunderstood, just like it’s wielder.
★
length being 12 ¾ inches reflects like an ever flowing river a bold and commanding personality, a natural talent for magic and an otherworldly uniqueness.
★
the wand’s flexibility is supple, fluid, flexible yet not weak.
ℰ 𝐱t𝐫a a𝐜c𝐞s𝐬o𝐫i𝐞s i𝐧c𝐥u𝐝e ౨ৎ⋆˚。⋆
Fine silver veining along the handle. Symbolizes a graceful elegant nature. A deep intuition, connection to the moon, deep ambition and clarity.
A tiny black opal crystal embedded in the end. Linked with mystery and a secret spiritual magic of sorts. It shimmers with deep colors in the dark.
the wand’s humming. It hums, lowly, elegantly in my hand, something only i am privy to. It responds to my emotional energy and dare i say feeds off it to become powerful.
Not an additional feature of the wand itself, but the carrying case is a custom velvet lines case made of deep emerald and silver leather. It has been enchanted to only open at one touch of mine.

i will hold off on stealing your dog in exchange for addams reader adopting phantom reader ( phantom ) and then having the addams family meeting them.
THE READER-VERSE EXPANDS-
There's a lot of things you can't prepare for in life, whether you're a superpowered godlike being or a genius billionaire with the intelligence and willpower to rival the amazons. You can't prepare for all things unknown.
So that's how (name) Addams found themselves taking care of a poltergeist that apparently isn't quite dead yet.
It'd started with things shuffling around the manor, like something was scuffling in there when you weren't looking. Then the scratches on the ceiling alongside green fluid oozing from cracks in the walls. It was delightfully odd!
You hadn't had a good demon in the home in a while so of course you pulled out your scrying crystals and attempted to talk to them, no bite.
You attempted a little blood letting next, still nothing. That's.... Different, but hey maybe they're playing hard to get?
When you hunted down the old Hasbro ouija board on top of one of the shelves you heard something in the room, good! Maybe this is what that wanted.
Just as you set up the board and hovered your hands over it, something knocked your hands away and flipped the board over. You looked up to see a teenager in a black and silver suit, floating above the ground? What an odd form for a demon or spirit to take!
"hello there! I'm guessing you're my little house guest?" You lean back on your threadbare couch with a wide grin on your face, eyes locked on the slightly translucent figure in front of you.
They frown and pout their cheeks out at you as they eye the Ouija board. "You! Stop doing all.... That! Do you know how infested your house is? This is the worst patient nest I've seen since-are you listening?"
You look up from the ambient green goo you'd been trying to scoop up into your hands, blinking innocently at the demon-ghost-creature
"oh yes! I'm just rather curious why you're leaking everywhere."
Their mouth falls open and their brows furrow angrily. "I-i am NOT leaking anything i..."
They suddenly materialize a pair of legs and.... Glow for a second? You blink and a now solid looking teenager is standing in your living room, now wearing normal human clothing. They look extremely upset too, huh...
"you-stop playing with the ectoplasm!" They're practically stomping their foot on the floor.
You don't stop playing with the ectoplasm.
"that's quite a fun little trick! I remember the days when I used to transform in balls of fire... Now I settle for hot baths to remind me of my youth..."
You sigh wistfully in reminisce as you trail your fingertips through the goop - ectoplasm as it's called.
"umm... Are you a ghost or spook, by perchance?"
"me? No, not yet my dear. For now I'm counted among the living... Regrettably. Now care to tell me where you came from? All things evil and ghoulish are welcome here my dear, so make yourself comfortable and do tell!" You giggle like a deranged person as you finally pull your hands away from the ectoplasm, wiping them off on your pant legs before rapidly patting the couch beside you in invitation.
The teen shakes their head and looks away from you, eyeing the living room and flipped over ouija board to avoid your creepy stare.
".... That's a complicated question."
You hum in response. "Is it? Or just an uncomfortable one."
The teens head quickly snaps up to look at you, brows pinched together and eyes wide like a scared rabbits. For a moment all they do is stare at you as you wait patiently, after a moment they step around your coffin table and drop on your couch loudly, grunting as a spring digs into their back.
🔹🔹🔹
You gesture grandly between the kids and teenager with wild swings of your hands as they come face to face. "these are your new cousins! Wednesday and pugsley, kids, this is the newest Addams! Play nice you three, don't get too wild with the crossbows and poisons! Save that for when you play outside okay?"
Phantom perks up at the mention of poisons just as the other two do, the look in Wednesdays eye scares them enough that Phantom looks genuinely disturbed and latches onto your hand as you go to brush past. "W-wait! don't just-"
You pat all three children's heads as you walk away to let them mingle, you find yourself seated next to Morticia on the love seat.
"you look tired and worn down, (name). Parenthood suits you well." She says calmly while knitting something. very poorly
You hum as you lean back with a sigh, listening to phantom transform seemingly to avoid becoming part of target practice for the kids.
"you're too kind Morticia, I hadn't realized how much I needed a soul sucking little leech in my life until I got phantom..."
Morticia nods her head as she holds up her work, a black onesie sized for a baby in her hands. It somehow has three legs.
"the horrors of children give you a certain glow, don't they."

do you think can you do a fic where drew is helping reader study for grad school?
something cute and sweet like maybe he sees she’s stressed and turns it into a game
Study Buddy
Pairing: Drew Starkey x Reader
Warnings: N/A
Pronouns: She/Her
Word Count: 0.5K
Masterlist
Drew can see how stressed Y/N is for her big test coming up. She doesn’t get many tests as a grad student, mostly dealing with long-term projects. So the psychology test worth fifty percent of her mark is nothing to take lightly She’s dedicated most of her time to studying, which left Drew little time to spend with her. Watching her stress over her cue card at the dining room table, he comes up with a solution that could help fix two of their problems. Her being stressed and them not spending enough time together. He heads over to the table and pulls out a seat across from her. Her eyebrow raises at the spray bottle and mini KitKats in his hands. “What are you doing with those?” she questions. He gives her an evil smirk, “It’s a surprise. Give me your cue cards.” She hesitates before pushing the deck of paper toward him.
She watches as he picks up the first card and reads off of it. “What is fluid and crystallized intelligence?” he reads out loud. She takes a second to think, “Fluid intelligence is your capability to learn new things. Crystallized intelligence is the accumulation of the knowledge you have gained over time.” He gives her a grin, leaning over to give her a kiss and then sliding over a KitKat bar. She happily takes the chocolate and opens it up to eat it. She breaks it apart and hands one side to him. He takes it, shoving it entirely into his mouth. He moves on to the next card. “What are Thrustone’s primary mental abilities?” Y/N freezes at this question, taking longer to answer. “Verbal comprehension, word fluency, associative memory, inductive reasoning, numeric ability, spatial visualization and perceptual concepts,” her confidence drops off as she gets to the final ability. Drew grimaces before taking the spray bottle and squirting her with it. She squeals, holding her arms up to protect herself “It’s perceptual speed,” he breaks to her.
“What was that for?” she yells, not really in anger but in surprise. Drew shrugs, “You’re studying psychology, so I thought I would do my own Pavlovian experiment.” She glares at him and snatches the bottle away from him. Her fingers find the trigger, hitting his face with cold water. She giggles at his look of shock but scrambles out of her chair when he gets up to chase after her. She uses the water to keep him away. He eventually catches up to her and picks her up by the waist. He wipes his wet face on her shirt, listening to her silent pleas to stop. He puts her down and she kisses his cheek. “I think I like this game, but let’s change it a little. If I get it wrong, you spray me. If I get it right, I spray you. Deal?” she offers. He can only chuckle at the words, holding his hand out to lead the way back to the table. And that is how an afternoon of studying left Y/N and Drew absolutely soaked.

A recent study published in the Journal of Personality has found that adolescents with lower levels of both cognitive and emotional abilities are more likely to hold authoritarian attitudes, whether on the left or right of the political spectrum. The findings highlight how limitations in reasoning and emotional regulation are tied to authoritarianism, shedding light on the shared psychological traits that underpin these ideological attitudes.
Adolescence is a critical developmental period when political beliefs and ideological attitudes begin to take shape, yet studies examining these processes among adolescents are sparse. Researchers at Ghent University in Belgium aimed to determine whether the relationships observed in adults—such as the link between lower cognitive abilities and more authoritarian attitudes—also apply to adolescents.
One of the primary motivations for the study was to address the assumption that ideological development primarily occurs during adulthood, particularly following exposure to higher education. This assumption has been widely discussed in political psychology, with theories suggesting that adolescence is too early for meaningful political engagement due to limited cognitive capacities.
However, recent research has challenged this view, arguing that proto-ideological beliefs emerge even in childhood and that understanding these early beliefs can shed light on how ideological attitudes develop. By focusing on adolescents, the researchers hoped to capture a critical stage in this developmental trajectory.
Another key goal was to examine the role of emotional abilities, which had received less attention than cognitive abilities in prior research. Emotional abilities—such as understanding and regulating emotions—are crucial for navigating social situations and making judgments about societal issues. Given that previous studies on adults found emotional abilities to be strong predictors of ideological attitudes, the researchers hypothesized that these abilities might play an even more significant role during adolescence.
To examine how cognitive and emotional abilities relate to ideological attitudes, the researchers recruited 507 participants aged 15 to 22 years. The participants were primarily high school and college students, ensuring a sample representative of middle and late adolescence.
The researchers used standardized intelligence tests to measure cognitive abilities. For participants aged 16 or younger, the WISC-V test was administered, assessing skills such as verbal comprehension, fluid reasoning, and processing speed. For those 17 and older, the Kaufman Adolescent and Adult Intelligence Test was used, which measures fluid and crystallized intelligence through tasks like reasoning, symbol learning, and comprehension.
Emotional abilities were assessed using four abridged performance-based tests, including measures of emotional understanding and recognition. The results from these tests were combined into a composite score to represent each participant’s overall emotional abilities.
To measure ideological attitudes, the researchers used three well-established scales. Right-wing authoritarianism was assessed using items measuring conformity, respect for authority, and aggression toward out-groups. Social dominance orientation was measured by assessing preferences for hierarchical versus egalitarian social structures. Finally, left-wing authoritarianism was evaluated using a scale adapted to capture opposition to traditional authority and advocacy for redistributive policies.
The results showed significant relationships between both cognitive and emotional abilities and ideological attitudes, though the strength and nature of these relationships varied. In line with prior studies in adult populations, adolescents with lower cognitive abilities were more likely to endorse authoritarian attitudes, both on the right and left of the political spectrum.
Interestingly, the relationship between cognitive abilities and social dominance orientation was weaker than for right-wing authoritarianism, suggesting that hierarchical preferences might be less cognitively driven.
Emotional abilities, however, emerged as even stronger predictors of ideological attitudes than cognitive abilities. Adolescents with lower emotional abilities were more likely to hold authoritarian beliefs across all three dimensions: right-wing authoritarianism, social dominance orientation, and left-wing authoritarianism. Furthermore, when emotional abilities were included in the models, the influence of cognitive abilities on ideological attitudes became nonsignificant, suggesting that emotional abilities may play a mediating role.
Another key finding was the striking similarity between right-wing and left-wing authoritarian attitudes. Both shared common psychological underpinnings, such as a preference for conformity and authority, which were negatively related to emotional and cognitive abilities. This overlap supports the idea that authoritarian attitudes, regardless of political orientation, stem from similar cognitive and emotional processes.
Interestingly, the study found no significant differences between middle and late adolescents in the strength or nature of these relationships. This consistency suggests that the links between abilities and ideological attitudes are stable across this developmental period, challenging the notion that these relationships emerge only in adulthood.
“In summary, the present results mirror the results obtained in adult samples, with similar relationships of more or less equal magnitude between cognitive abilities and ideological attitudes, and with even stronger relationships for emotional abilities,” the researchers wrote. “The very concept of ‘ideological attitudes’ almost necessitates that its developmental roots go back in time. Many people are committed to politics, but in reflecting on ‘the political’ they do not always think in terms of specific policy issues. Ideological attitudes, after all, have a different compass, one that aligns with values and norms . Such values and norms likely develop at younger ages and are amenable to socialization, making people responsive to specific ideological attitudes.”
The findings shed light on how both cognitive and emotional abilities are related to adolescents’ ideological attitudes. However, because the data were cross-sectional, the researchers could not establish causal relationships or observe how these abilities and attitudes evolve over time. This limitation leaves unanswered questions about whether deficits in cognitive and emotional abilities lead to authoritarian attitudes or if certain ideological beliefs influence the development of these abilities. Future longitudinal studies are necessary to explore these dynamics in greater depth, tracking changes across adolescence and into adulthood to better understand the developmental pathways that connect abilities to ideological preferences.
The study, “The Relationship Between Cognitive and Emotional Abilities and Ideological Attitudes Among Adolescents,” was authored Alain Van Hiel, Kim Dierckx, Hilde Depauw, Tassilo Tissot, Ruben Van Severen, Johnny Fontaine, and Arne Roets.

Voidslug (Monster)

(Art by Der-Reiko on deviantart)
CR4 NE Medium Ooze
A voidslug is a living tear into the plane of negative energy, the coagulation of its entropic energy given wretched animation. While a dedicated adventuring party can take one out easily, it leaves a path of dead animals, withered plants, broken structures, and barren soil behind it as it wanders; a single voidslug can render a small area inhospitable if allowed to exist too long.
Mindless undead are naturally drawn to a voidslug, and the creatures seem to tolerate their presence, often worsening a zombie infestation. Particularly nihilistic or destructive intelligent undead may keep a voidslug around as a source of healing and strength, but those who desire the material or interpersonal usually recognize the voidslug’s potential for collateral damage.
Inside a voidslug is a solid, gemlike mass of crystalized negative energy. This gem can be used as 1,000gp worth of Onyx Gems for the purpose of Animate Dead, Create Undead, and similar spells, or towards creating any construct that has the aforementioned spell as a component.
This creature resembles a living wad of black phlegm, and it leaves behind a trail of thick fluid and dead plant life.

A Price for Loyalty
---
The grand hall was teeming with noble guests, the air thick with whispered conversations and the faint sounds of polished shoes clicking on marble floors. Miel stood near the edge of the crowd, half-listening to the chatter around him, his gaze flickering over the extravagant decorations of the event. The ballroom had been transformed into something out of a dream—crystal chandeliers casting a soft glow over the scene, rich tapestries hanging on the walls, and the scent of fresh flowers filling the air.
Carston, as usual, was the center of attention, surrounded by sycophants and admirers, his easy smile and regal presence drawing everyone’s eyes. He was the crown prince, after all, and he knew how to command a room with his poised elegance. His appearance was immaculate, his carefully styled hair gleaming under the soft light. Miel could hardly tear his gaze away, though he couldn’t deny the slight unease that always fluttered in his chest when Carston was the one in control. There was something about him that felt too... perfect. Too calculated.
Miel was lost in his thoughts when the doors to the hall suddenly burst open, and the sound of hooves pounding against the stone floor reverberated through the building. A murmur ran through the crowd, heads turning toward the entrance, eyes widening in surprise. Carston, sensing the shift in attention, looked toward the door, his expression momentarily faltering before he quickly masked it with a tight smile.
Miel’s heart skipped a beat as he turned his gaze toward the source of the disruption.
Shenir.
There he was, riding into the ballroom on a sleek black horse, his figure framed by the gilded archway as he effortlessly guided the horse into the room. The entire atmosphere seemed to change in that single moment, the music fading into a distant hum as all eyes turned to him. It wasn’t just his bold entrance—no, it was the sheer confidence with which he carried himself, the way his presence seemed to command the room without even trying.
Shenir was dressed in dark, meticulously tailored clothing, his long coat flowing behind him like an extension of his aura. His hair, rich and dark with warm undertones, caught the light as he tilted his head slightly, his piercing green eyes scanning the room with a sharp intelligence that seemed to lock onto each person with unspoken authority. The gold flecks in his eyes gleamed, giving him an almost otherworldly quality, as if he saw things others couldn’t.
Miel couldn’t look away.
Shenir’s gaze shifted momentarily toward him, his lips curving into the faintest of smirks, as if he knew the effect he was having. The crowd parted before him, some stepping back, others standing taller in his presence. He moved through them with the grace of a predator, the horse’s hooves echoing on the polished floors.
Miel didn’t notice when Carston had shifted beside him until he heard a quiet, strained voice.
“Do you see that?” Carston's tone was laced with frustration. His gaze was hard, though it barely touched Shenir.
Miel, still caught in the pull of Shenir's presence, blinked and nodded absentmindedly. “I… Yes. He’s...” He hesitated, trying to find the words to describe what was happening. “He’s commanding the room,” Miel finished, unable to hide the awe in his voice.
Carston's lips pressed into a tight line, his jaw clenching as he stepped closer to Miel. “He doesn’t belong here. Not like this.”
The sound of hooves grew louder as Shenir approached the center of the room, his dismount fluid and effortless. His movements were smooth, almost calculated, yet still so strikingly graceful. He turned to face the crowd, his green eyes gleaming in the soft light, the silver chain of his pocket watch flickering in the air with every movement.
He was, without question, the star of the evening now.
The crowd, once alive with the chatter of nobles, had fallen into a hushed murmur. Some stared, wide-eyed, while others exchanged looks, their opinions sharp but unspoken. Shenir was always a subject of fascination, but tonight, he had taken the crown prince's spotlight for himself without a single word.
And then, as if it was instinct, Miel found himself taking a step forward, drawn like a moth to the flame of Shenir’s presence.
“You’re drawn to him,” Carston muttered, his voice low, almost possessive. “Just like everyone else.”
Miel didn’t respond. He didn’t need to. He knew what Carston meant. The subtle, undeniable pull that Shenir had over him was nothing new. He’d felt it from the first moment they met, but tonight, in the midst of the crowd’s stunned silence, it was more intense than ever.
As Shenir's eyes met his again, Miel's breath caught in his throat. The smirk that curled on Shenir's lips was barely perceptible, but it sent a ripple through Miel, making his heart skip another beat. There was something... dangerous in that look, something that set his pulse racing and his mind spiraling.
Shenir’s voice reached him, sharp and clear above the whispers of the crowd. “Do you find it… hard to look away, Miel?”
Miel’s mouth went dry. He was caught. He didn’t even try to hide it anymore.
“I… I didn’t expect such an entrance,” Miel managed, his voice strained as he forced himself to speak. His hands were cold despite the warmth of the room, and his heart was racing in a way that was completely out of his control.
“I’m used to surprising people,” Shenir replied smoothly, his smirk widening ever so slightly. “Don’t worry, you’ll get used to it.”
Miel's breath caught at that, his mind reeling with a thousand thoughts. But before he could respond, Shenir turned, his gaze shifting to Carston, who had been watching from the corner of his eye. The crown prince’s eyes darkened, but Shenir merely gave him a small, mocking bow of his head, as if to say, I’m not here to compete. I’m here because I am.
With a subtle flick of his wrist, Shenir motioned for Miel to follow him. “Let’s take a walk. The night is young, and I’m sure you have much more to say.”
And as Shenir began to lead him away, Miel felt the pull of his presence like an invisible thread between them, drawing him forward as if no one else in the room mattered.
Carston's eyes followed them, fury boiling beneath his composure, but Miel barely noticed. For once, his attention was consumed by the man who had so effortlessly claimed the night.

The 3rd and 4th Dimensions
By Arjuwan Lakkdawala
Ink in the Internet
We are defined by what we think, it is also what sets us apart from the animals. Consciousness is the true expanse of the world we experience and interact with, the subconscious plays its part as well on who we are and who we become.
So is there anything on earth more valuable than information? We could say material things like diamonds or gold. But I could load a truck with diamonds and it would still be a truck. Load the mind with information and the person changes. What kind of change will depend on the information.
The knowledge we have completely changes everything about us - from the way we talk, walk, to the way we behave in every situation.
We can almost instantly tell what a person is about from their choice of words.
The significance of mind over matter raises the question of what is intelligence? This is not simple to answer because our thinking takes many forms, so which pattern of thoughts and formation of ideas can be categorized is difficult. Remember we are not here trying to define the meaning of words, that can easily be done using a dictionary, what we are trying to define is what is the intellectual ability used to construct and understand ideas, concepts, mathematics, and formations of multidimensional patterns of thinking, and of course the part memory storage plays in strengthening our thinking.
Computer scientists of this era have this very task of understanding the processes of human thinking, from the virtual such as the imagination to the intricate details of the brain’s chemistry and functions of neurons and cells, etc.
And then to replicate whatever they can into neuromorphic computer chips.
The reason I have gone into these details is that we are - especially in this era highly effected by information, as we get subjected to an unprecedented amount daily, which is the first time this has happened to mankind. It is increasing the expanse of our minds for better or worse.
In my research I found two concrete definitions of two types of intellect.
1. Crystallized Intelligence
2. Fluid Intelligence
The first is said to be easier to rely on and acquire, which is intelligence based on memorizing sets of information either by reading or experience.
The second is perhaps the closest definition we have reached so far regarding “intelligence.”
Fluid Intelligence is the intellectual ability to think and come up with a solution, discovery, or understanding of things, or complex problems, we had no prior information about.
It is rather easy to understand how Crystallized Intelligence is acquired and then applied. But how does the mind produce Fluid Intelligence on demand when there is little or no prior information about a task. I didn’t find a definite answer to this question but I got nearer to understanding it by looking into neurons, brain plasticity, necessity, logic, reason, mathematics, and so much more.
A 2018 article from the Human Brain Project sheds some light on this aspect.
An experiment was conducted on living brain tissue taken from patients that had undergone operations for tumors. In cases some healthy tissue is removed to perform the operation. Prior to the operations of about 50 patients they were given IQ tests.
Side note: IQ tests don’t really define how intelligent we are but they can measure and compare how well we solve specific intellectual tasks, by counting the correct answers and how fast we were able to reach the right solutions.
Based on this method of cognitive examination each patient was given an IQ score.
Then MRI examination analysis were taken into account as well. The final conclusion of the study was published in the journal eLife.
They found that higher IQ patients’ neurons fired up faster, and they had longer dendrites. The human brain has about 100 billion neurons, they pass on information in the form of electrical signals known as ‘Action Potentials’ the individuals with higher IQ had faster action potentials. Based on this study we can safely say that a sign of high intelligence is ‘speed.’
However, what about individuals who struggle with learning, why is there a difference in the cognitive abilities from person to person.
It is said that intelligence is partly heritable and that there are genes that influence better brain structure and functionality, which in turn influences better performance in intelligence tests.
Little is known about how genes and the environment affect the brain while it is developing, but while there are genes that can predisposition a person to better or high intelligence, external factors like education, emotional well being, mental health, and various other aspects could effect the ability to learn.
Early researchers believed that the brain developed only till adulthood, but new research shows that the brain is malleable, and has neuroplasticity also known as brain plasticity, studies have shown that as the brain learns not only its functionality improves but it physically changes its structure. And this is a lifelong ongoing process.
The brain is so efficient in caring for itself that if there is physical damage to part of the brain, it will take the functionality of that part and move it to another region and restore an ability that was lost. This is provided the damage is not too severe.
Even our neurons are selected based on usage, the ones not used often or never, die. So to improve learning the brain should be given mental exercise to improve neuroplasticity; brain structures and functions.
The difference in neuroplasticity could be one of the major factors of why intelligence and learning is not on the same level from person to person. However, improvement is possible for everyone at any age.
Another powerful aspect of learning is mental imagery without external input. Examples are the imagination, visual memory recollection, dreams. I did research on how exactly the brain creates visual images, it is a category of ongoing research, but quite a bit is known about the regions said to be responsible for mental images, like the Primary Visual Cortex at the back of the head, and the Prefrontal Cortex at the front of the head. The Hippocampus and amygdala are also contributors among other parts and functions.
Some personal notes: from everything I have read until now what I can understand is that thoughts do have a physical existence in the form of electrical signals (action potentials) and so the signals firing up in the brain can indeed physically change its structure, and the mental imagery is that the brain is a thinking biological device capable of creating vision, it’s how we see the world with our eyes open, and the imagery mechanism within our brains continues in dreams and thoughts.
I have to say Subhan Allah who created us in such miraculous construction.
Now that we have a good understanding of the internal biological processes of learning, let’s ponder how did man’s thinking evolve to scientific methodologies from the primitive era of the Neanderthals and Denisovans. I think mankind first looked to the cosmos, the sun, moon, stars, unfortunately ancient history records show that science was not the immediate inspiration but it was paganism with human sacrifice, so to move forward in time to the records of the earliest scientific thoughts about the world and the cosmos, we’ll explore the scientific history of the atom.
What are we made of? What is everything made of? The simple answer is atoms. In the 5th century BCE, Greek philosophers made some correct assumptions, and possibly so did Indian and Chinese philosophers at about the same time.
1. Subdivision was possible to a unit that could not be further divided (atoms)
2. Atoms are in constant motion.
While the atoms can be split they contain 'elementary particles' that cannot like electrons and quarks.
There are four states of matter: Solid, Liquid, Plasma, Gas. We can see these and so they are easy to identify.
(Examples of plasma is the sun and the stars, even some fires can be a type of plasma.)
But what about what we cannot see like the atoms. How did the earliest scientists find evidence of their existence. This is one of the geniuses of human thinking, to apply logic, reason, and experimentation to make discoveries and then inventions.
The credit for the first direct evidence of the existence of atoms goes to the Scottish botanist Robert Brown, who in 1828 discovered that pollen suspended in water was moving constantly in complex paths, this is observable with a microscope. The movement was due to the molecules in the pollen and water colliding. This phenomena was named Brownian Motion.
Then Albert Einstein in 1905 published papers that explained how Brownian Motion could be used to measure the size of atoms and molecules.
He explained that the movement was due to kinetic thermal energy of molecules
Picking up on Einstein’s paper the French physicist Jean-Baptiste Perrin in 1908 produced accurate sizes for atoms and molecules.
The measurements can be made by seeing how many microns particles with the diameter of 1 micron move horizontally in a minute.
These were the earliest indisputable confirmation of the existence of atoms.
Scientists did it without modern super advanced technology, they used reason, logic, mathematics, and developed experiments with high precision scientific parameters.
The ability of discovering the depth of the iceberg from the tip of it is one of the most prominent marks of intelligence.
Carl Sagan, the astronomer, planetary scientist, and science communicator, inspired by the 1884 satirical novella Flatland by the English schoolmaster Edwin Abbott Abbott, gave a fascinating demonstration of how those living in a 2 dimensional Flatland could have difficulty understanding the 3rd dimension.
A round object like an apple descends into a land where everything is flat, they only have lines, everything is 2 dimensional. So they only see parts of the apple that land and the parts are flat, they cannot see the complete apple.

In the same way the earth looks flat but is round though we being on earth, sort of like in flatland cannot see it, but when we go into space the 3rd dimension we can see it. There could a 4th dimension that we cannot perceive. Mysteries and scientific discoveries could be similar but possible to unravel if we study the clues.

I would love to hear some personal favourites with merformers, whether it be ships or physical traits or culture ideas or yknow pure porn, totally not because I’m trying to write a merformers research facility fic, whaaaat noooo, why would you think thattttt
- Robooby
NICE, I can ramble about merformers. this will also be incoherent, but, here we go.
- i think mers are still fully metal. the tail folds cleverly, looking fluid and organic, but it's still 100% metal. what little "organic" or soft parts they have, i think that'd be their array, and various decorative fins. Defensive or attack fins are still metal.
- my favourite merformers culture thing still is the licking inside of someone’s mouth that i already talked about. I think they don’t have a concept of kissing as cybertronians know it, so this isn’t exactly a kiss, it’s much more intimate and significant, since it’s done to show submission to someone. It’s basically saying “i belong to you” in a romantic, platonic, or familial way. I also think mers have elaborate mating dances, embedded deep into their instincts, and will automatically initiate them before trying to have sex.
- I think mers are fully sentient, but they’re far too instinct-driven for researchers to really figure that out until a few years in (early facilities were not very… nice). Unlike cybertronians, they have to hunt for food and still worry about predators and can only reproduce between each other, so their instincts would have never evolved out of them. They are, however, intelligent. There are cities, or, their versions of cities in the depths of the ocean, they have culture and holidays and jewelry (oh lord, i love to put merformers in jewelry. Mers wearing shells and crystals as necklaces, or more morbidly so, teeth and fangs of things they’ve killed, membranes of dead predators as pretty translucent cloaks….)
- I still like the idea of the Lost Light being a ship that crashed into the ocean ages ago and now it’s used as a little hang-out spot for various mers (re: the lost light crew). Or, as a mating spot.
- As for ships, I am still very fond of the idea of Minimus being a hermit crab occupying the dead metal shell of a long-dead Ultra Magnus, and Megatron, who is of the same genotype (the same sub-species of fish) as Ultra Magnus was, becomes deeply enamoured with him after some time spent together, only to be met with a lot of disappointment when it turns out that he’s unable to mate Magnus (because he’s cumming into Magnus’s tank, and well, the dead shell of Ultra Magnus is in no state to be having pups). Minimus is unable to mate Megatron either because the reserves Ultra Magnus has are too old and sterile.
Of course, I am very into veterinarian/caretaker Ratchet and mer Drift. Or facility staff Drift and mer Ratchet. the interspecies thing really hits the spot with these two. But also, let's remember that fanfic i tried to write, where Ratchet has lived in capture for most of his life and Drift is a wild mer that was put into his tank and they struggle to socialize. I like that.
- I really like to think old and fertile is a very desirable trait for most mers. It’s something that the staff of many facilities don’t figure out for a while, but older mers who’ve kept their fertility are much better at having clutches than younger ones. This goes for Ratchet, for Megatron, for Optimus (though we’ve never had mer Optimus in here, which is a pity), for Rung. An old mer is usually harder to mate with but absolutely worth it.
- I think they speak their own language, but are capable of learning how to fluently communicate with cybertronians. "domesticated" mers (re: mers that have lived in a facility for most of their life and cannot survive in the wild anymore) would be indistinguishable from a regular cybertronian if it wasnt for the tail
#you asked me to say anything i delivered pls write that fanfic we need so much more merformers in this world#valveplug#texty#merformers#pregnancy mention
