I'm on a "fantasy reading" online group and I kid you not, someone said

"Oh I liked Sarah J Maas books... they're not Game of Thrones, but at least she finished her saga".

THEY'RE NOT MEANT TO BE COMPARED.

One is high fantasy written by an author who spends time and research to do a believable world building and plot, because fantasy is based on that! No good fantasy is written fast!

One is an author who writes smut - oh no wait, y'all call it romantasy sorry - with some vague fairy villas in the background and a plot that is easily beaten by the Twilight Saga.

THE SPEED IS NOT THE FLEX YOU THINK IT IS. It's the ultimate proof of bad quality.

AND IT'S TWO. DIFFERENT. GENRES.

No. Don't even try to argue.

I'll come at you with the rage of someone who has read actual fantasy since 20 years, way before fucking booktok, and saw her shelves ruined by romance who could NOT stay in its lane.

I'm trying to do a greater ratio of physically reading books vs. listening to audiobooks, but ... it's not going well. I last a few pages before I'm like, "If I'm looking at words, I'd rather be writing them too," and go off and work on a recreational essay.

Maybe I should look at this in a positive light, since writing takes more brain power than reading. But I have nostalgia for when I was a kid and younger adult and would just sit and read a book (although even then it is fair to say that my mind tended to wander frequently, so the nostalgia may be false).

And I have *hundreds* of books I've acquired over the years that I fear I will never actually read.

Unless I find and borrow an audio version at my library.

Sigh.

Reading used to be for the bullied ones

Now it's also (and sometimes mostly) for the bullies

me: I swear I just want to go to the bookshop and get some inspiration for my rebuy list. Just five minutes cover checking that's it.

also me: stays in there for more than half an hour, takes pictures of every book I like and end up buying 7 books in total. yes I'm totally fine
