I’m back! • I mean, I didn’t go anywhere exactly. I have been in one of the worst reading slumps i can remember tho. • I think I just aggressively dislike predictable books and when you’re forced to read it because it’s a buddy read… well, go back a few posts and you’ll see my rant. • Anyways, 1984 pulled me out gently, cause I wasn’t expecting much. Then the Lunar Chronicles pulled me the rest of the way with love and joy. • I loved them for enjoyability, seriously fun read with very memorable and distinct characters. 5/5 • The plot was predictable, but only because I know my fairytales. And guessing how the author was going to incorporate them was it’s own sort of game. (Though, overall, the series does loose a few points for the lost royalty trope and the… idk, I won’t kill the villain, I’ll be merciful, oh they stabbed me, it’s on bitch… murder that is self defence for the sole reason of showing how morally upstanding the MC is. What else were they going to do with that villain? You can’t lock up someone with mind control!) • • Ahem, I’m out of my reading slump. That’s the take away here. So watch my read count catch up to my goal now! (I’m at 14 out of 57. Goodreads tells me I’m 20 behind 😬) • • • #readingagain #reading #readingtime #read #readingya #readingisfun https://www.instagram.com/p/CSZvkOerAbj/?utm_medium=tumblr

The finalists are final
English
Gather round, my fellow f*ckers, we found our first book to start the year with: Der Zwerg reinigt den Kittel by Anita Augustin.
We decided to introduce an Austrian Author to kick off the book club. Blue Duck has already gotten to know one of her works, ‘Alles Amok’, and has had rather positive things to say about it. Both of us agreed on having something fun and easy going to read first, to make this challenge a bit easier.
The majority of the books we read in our teens and early twenties, have actually been part of the fantasy genre. However, we ended up with a list of mainly novels – as you can see below – because, let’s be honest here guys, fantasy usually includes more than one book…and we’re not ready for that commitment…yet!
Due to the fact, that we have only found 10 books so far, there’s still room left for ideas on your side! And, to make it easier for you to know which books made the cut, we were kind enough to include the following reading list of 2021 at the end of this post.
Deutsch
1. Jänner (oder Januar, wie unsere Bundesdeutschen Freunde sagen) /January: Der Zwerg reinigt den Kittel von Anita Augustin.
2. Februar/February: Frankenstein von Mary Shelley
3. März/March: True von Riikka Pulkkinen
4. April: The year of the hare von Arto Paasilinna
5. Mai/May: To kill a mockingbird von Harper Lee
6. Juni/June: The tobacconist von Robert Seethaler
7. Juli/July: Troll, a lovestory von Johanna Sinisalo
8. August: Fahrenheit 451 von Ray Bradbury
9. September: Memory of water von Emmi Itäranta
10. Oktober/October: The midnight library von Matt Haig
Happy new year, good luck for 2021 and we’ll be back next year with more info on Anita Augustin and our first read!
Einen guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr, viel Glück und Lesemotivation. Wir melden uns 2021 mit näheren Infos zu unserem Jänner-Buch.

Monday’s T & G reading
Again, MDZS/Untamed fics.
Finished
Teen:
one boyfriend coming right up, by wearing_tearing
“Then it is settled,” Lan Qiren nods. “Bring your boyfriend with you to dinner next week.”
Lan Xichen freezes.
Bring his what?
*
Lan Xichen and Nie Mingjue aren't boyfriends. Or are they?
Blindsided, by Supernova_Sage
He takes a deep breath, drumming his fingers along the countertop. He checks his phone. 6:02p. Jiang Cheng had said six o’clock, right? Maybe he said seven. Fuck. What if he had said five? No. No, he definitely said six. Then again, why the hell does Wei Wuxian even care? He doesn’t. Or he shouldn’t. He’s not even all that excited about this stupid date. He’s been dreading this since Jiang Cheng told him about it that afternoon. Put off getting ready for as long as he possibly could. And he still got to the restaurant on time, which is a feat in and of itself. Hmm. So maybe that’s a sign. Maybe this date will go well. Maybe it’s meant to be. Maybe it’s—
“Wei Ying.”
He turns on the barstool to see Lan Wangji standing before him. He smiles wide. “Ah, Lan Zhan.” The bartender drops his drink off at that moment and Wei Wuxian waves for his appreciation. He then turns back to Lan Wangji. “What are you doing here?”
Lan Wangji swallows hard. “Brother…set me up.”
into the light of a dark black night, by dragongirlG
On a snowy night in the dead of winter, Wu Yuhua, formerly known as Madam Lan, unexpectedly spends one last night with her sons before escaping from the Cloud Recesses.
standing still (but we keep going), by lwjromantics (justfantaestic)
Lan Wangji supposed that if having to take care of little A-Yuan and Mo Xuanyu and having to look at the reminders of Wei Ying in their habits and mannerisms was punishment for his actions, he would willingly take it and flay his own back open.

There are children in the Burial Mounds.
Wei Wuxian's Discreet Dating Service: Hot Rogue Cultivators In Your Area!, by x_los
Wei Wuxian and Jiang Wanyin are only sort of speaking. This doesn’t prevent Wei Wuxian from interfering in Jiang Wanyin’s life. Just because you're estranged doesn't mean you don't want your palpably miserable baby brother to be happy! And you know what's made Wei Wuxian very, very happy? Marriage.
fourth time's the charm, by thefaceofno
Nie Huaisang accidentally proposes to Wei Wuxian.
It somehow gets worse.
Kiss It Better, by wwx-lwj-ai-ni (TDKeh16)
"Lan Zhan, don't be mad. I was just kidding around. Here, I'll fix it--"
"What-- WEI YING?!!" Lan Zhan pulled away so quickly that his back slammed hard against the door of his locker. He shook Wei Ying -- more specifically, Wei Ying's lips -- off his arm and stared at him in shock. "What are you doing?!"
"Kissing it better," Wei Ying replied with usual cheerfully oblivious smile.
Lan Zhan glared at him, furious this time, as he gathered up the last of his things and stormed out of the locker room. His ears were burning red, and he couldn't help but repeat the word Wei Ying's brother Jiang Cheng had muttered as Lan Zhan made his hasty exit, "Shameless..."
Wei Ying didn't fight fair, and it had nothing to do with his fencing skills.
cedar and bubblegum, by sassybluee
It’s been like this as long as he’s worked for Build-A-Bear Workshop: every Thursday, shipment day, they’re greeted with boxes addressed to “BABW.” The only problem is half the time, these boxes are actually meant for Bath and Body Works—but of course the delivery people don’t look close enough to see that.
___
Lan Zhan works at Build-a-Bear Workshop, Wei Ying works at Bath and Body Works. It's a mall love story for the ages.
The Rules, by Run_of_the_mill (10 chapters)
Wei Wuxian is a new tenant in the Cloud Recesses. Hilarity ensues.
General:
A Good Sword, by Haoppopotamus
Wei Wuxian is forming a golden core in Mo Xuanyu's body. He realizes this means he can wield Suibian again but Lan Wangji reminds him it's with Jiang Cheng in Yunmeng. Their help is requested to subdue supernatural disturbances on Mushan Island so Wangxian head there with some juniors. During the night hunt, they run into Jiang Cheng who happens to have Suibian with him. How will Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian resolve who gets to keep the sword?
truth and dare, by schnaf
Wei Wuxian asked Lan Wangji out on a date. Daring? Well, it’s not like Lan Wangji would show up anyway.
Unfinished
Teen:
The Twin Blades of Yunmeng, by GhostySword & ofmindelans
Then Jiang Cheng brings both blades around, two sword glares flashing, and—oh. Wei Wuxian knows the second sword’s red and silver glare better than any other. His brother is wielding Suibian, the first and last sword that had ever belonged to Wei Wuxian. After Wei Wuxian’s death at Nightless City, Jiang Cheng and the Jin sect took away different treasures. When Wei Wuxian comes back from the dead, Jiang Cheng has some theories, some feelings, and two swords strapped across his back. Now Wei Wuxian must solve a Chenqing-charged mystery while surviving a passive-aggressive custody battle between Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji.
General:
Last Night I was Fine, by yunkoz
What would you do if you were in love, however you didn't even know it. In which Wei Wuxian is in love and everyone knows it, except Wei Wuxian himself.
Where the Lotus Flowers Bloom and the Seed Pods are Picked, by koljah
“A-Cheng,” Jiang Yanli takes a shuddering breath, letting it out in a huffed laugh. There’s some rustling in the background and Jiang Cheng swears he hears the muffled voice of a child, too. She sounds relieved when she speaks next, and Jiang Cheng can tell she’s smiling so wide the corner of her eyes crinkle. “It’s A-Xian, A-Cheng. Our A-Ying has come home!”
And Jiang Cheng feels as if his heart has stopped.

The Neighbourhood- Mario Vargas Llosa
Llosa won the Nobel Prize in literature, but it definitely wasn't for this book.
You get to see the kind of society Llosa wanted to depict, vicious and ready to give in to money, drugs, and sex. That's how Enrique, one of our protagonists, gets caught up in all this mess; he's lured there with the hopes of an investment and he's walked into an orgy after a few lines (of coke).
I’m not going to give you the summary here, but it involves an affair, love, power, and state machinery. But it also has a happy ending –Enrique is absolved and he can now enjoy threesomes with his wife and her best friend (who is also his best friends’ wife).
Llosa paints a dirty world and shows how even after a revolution and the end of terror you still have the same people continuing on with everything that helped them cope under the dictatorship. Llosa depicts how power weakens itself by making itself human, and by giving itself a face and a name when the mystery it had could have helped it preserve itself by letting people turn against one another. That its own “satanic vanity” is what blinds it to the moments and the people that will destroy it.
Of course, the book is also a man’s fantasy. Enrique and his wife, Marisa, have an even stronger marriage after it turns out she was having an affair with Chabela, and, even better, he can now partake in the affair with her! There is, of course, the graphic sex between the two women. Shorty was, of course, secretly in love with her boss, and she remembers with affection when his “small hands indelicately groping her breasts made her quiet and docile.” He stopped when he realized it was her, but seriously? He was perfectly happy groping a random woman in front of him. The book practically smells of sex –not sexual tension, just sex. That partly adds to the whole dynamic of how the place was filled with sexual, political, and economic greed, but more than that it just feels like page filler, to give the people reading the book some thrills.
Would I read it again? Nope. It feels staged, and things fall into place too easily for it to really depict the workings of power. There are the details that still make it come alive briefly –such as the information that power has, and intimate secrets, but those fall flat when you remember that Enrique is sexually abused in the prison, and there is no mention of it ever again. This book would make a great C rated film, but it doesn't seem like something a Nobel Laureate would've written.

"[It] was for them the fulfillment of their dearest wishes. It lifted them out of their insignificance. That it should come to power at the expense of innocent victims did not worry them. They were in the winners' camp and they severed relations with the losers. They expressed the contempt of the strong for the weak, the superman's scorn for the subhuman. I looked at the old lady who was clearly kindhearted, a good mother and a good wife. Without doubt she must often have shown sympathy for the oppressed, but the happiness of her own family was of paramount importance to her. There were millions of such families anxious only for peace and quiet in their own little nests. These were the mounting blocks by which the criminals climbed to power and kept it."
