The Flight of Freedom 7

Launched from Cape Canaveral 62 years ago today Astronaut Alan B. Shepard, Jr. became the first American in Space, during a fifteen minute suborbital flight aboard the Mercury Redstone 4 capsule Freedom 7. After a successful mission Shepard's capsule splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean and was recovered aboard a waiting Aircraft Carrier the USS Lake Champlain; Taking America's earliest steps in the Space Race which would eventually led to American Astronauts walking on the moon eight years later.

Concepts/Process under cut:

Starting with Cleo! The Undead collection is inspired by Cleo's Season 9 Quetzalcoatl dye shop. The glow-in-the-dark colors are based off in-game froglight colors, inspired by a convo in the brainstorming channel about materials in Minecraft and how their dyes and textures might be used for garments. There's a fantastic article by Aether (with stunning art by Bai to go with it) going deeper into this in the zine. Ooooo... you want to read it sooo baddd 🌀🌀🌀

I was originally going to add labels for the glow colors (pearlescent, ochre, verdant) but it was just way too cluttered. Woe!

Watches are based on Mumbo's Season 7 heart of gold base (first Hermitcraft season I watched! :D), obligatory Grumbot, and the Buttercups! I wanted to imitate Mumbo's geometric build style, but also his more recent versatility. A little industrial, a lot of fun, and just enough variety. His S10 base is incredible. Anyway.

I did actually try to put redstone dust in the background, but, well, let's justr say, color theory.

i just watched scott's session 7 and noticed a pattern: every single person forgot about grian.

grian hasn't been caught yet, cleo and scott establish. barely a minute later, scott is leading cleo and bigb by the hands to his secret spot and saying "i think we're the last three." like the name has slipped right out of his hands.

as etho tells the other zombies that no, actually, he doesn't want to kill cleo, it occurs to him suddenly. "actually, i kind of want grian to succeed on this, don't i? he's my teammate," he says, not like he doesn't care for grian, but like he's shocked he even forgot in the first place. (seconds later, he lifts his gaze to the sky, and he sees where grian is hiding. he's the only one who sees. he carries this secret with him as he watches grian run, an apology of sorts; sorry I forgot. I hope this makes it better.)

but it got me thinking: this is what grian does, isn't it? even since 3rd life, where he hid in the shadow of scar, whose face was always, always in the light, as he burrowed under doorways, covered in redstone and days-old blood. no one thinks of him as scar sells them the coffins grian will put them in.

grian has mastered the art of becoming nothing. he's so nothing, in fact, that his presence glances off the skin of even his friends. his name slips away from them. he disappears time and time again, falling through their fingers like sand. there are brief moments: "where's grian?" someone asks, but their blood is boiling and their fingers are itching. the image is a mirage and the sand crumbles at their fingertips. it's gone as soon as it comes; back to cleo, green cleo, uninfected cleo.

a reminder, perhaps from the universe itself. he is nothing but a ghost of a memory, a whisper of a promise. this is by design. the universe is telling him this, as it strings grian up limb by limb: you were only ever meant to watch.

The Chemical Structure of Redstone

So I was curious about what the chemical structure of Redstone looks like, and Minecraft Education Edition, albeit unintentionally, gives us a canon look into what Redstone is made of:

In Minecraft Education Edition, putting a Redstone Block into a Material Reducer shows that it's composed of 31 Carbon, 31 Uranium, and 38 Unobtanium, which we can assume to be measured in grams

Dividing the Redstone Block into Redstone Dust, each Redstone Dust is then composed of approximately 3.4 Carbon, 3.4 Uranium, and 4.2 Unobtanium

Again assuming that's measured in grams, that's 0.17 cm³ of Uranium, 1.496 cm³ of Carbon, and ???³ of Unobtanium per Redstone Dust

So what does this tell us about the chemical structure of Redstone? Basing this on Redstone Dust's composition, we can estimate that each Redstone molecule is composed of 3 Carbon atoms, 3 Uranium atoms, 4 Unobtanium atoms, a little under half of the time it binds to an extra Uranium and/or Carbon, and 20% of the time it binds to an extra Unobtanium

This also has some horrifying implications for how Redstone works:

Redstone would be extremely volatile as the radioactive decay from Unobtanium and Uranium would occasionally release Helium ions through alpha radiation, sometimes breaking apart Carbon into two Beryllium atoms (as it absorbs the extra proton and neutron from the Uranium) or merging into Oxygen

So Redstone should, in theory, be extremely flammable and potentially explosive, which implies that cave static, or the player mining Redstone with an Iron Pickaxe, could lead to a spark that causes an explosive cave-in

As Unobtanium is just a placeholder for unobtainable elements (hence the name), I'm going to estimate Unobtanium in this case as Unbinilium, the placeholder name for element 120

Why?

I'm estimating the Unobtanium as Redstone as being larger than the largest man-made element, Oganesson, which holds an impressive 118 protons

Each valence electron shell, from innermost to outermost, can bind with 2, 8, 18, 32, 32, 18, and 8 shells respectively, so I'd like Unobtanium to be an element we haven't discovered yet, and consequently I'd like to jump up to the next shell

While I could estimate with element 119's placeholder, Ununennium, it would have one electron in the next shell, so Unbinilium allows for easier chemical binding

So what does this molecule look like then? Well, horrifyingly...

It looks like this. As Redstone forms in crystal lattices, and only two Carbon atoms are free to bind, I can absolutely see why it's so brittle that it breaks into powder.

This makes the structure of Redstone:

she groans into your neck. “baby.”

“just listen. he’d totally thrive. he’d build a batcave under a mountain and use redstone for secret doors. like pistons and shit. secret entrances. pressure plates. booby traps. do you know how much command block knowledge this man would have??”

“…i regret everything.”

you sit up, chaotic energy sparking in your eyeballs. “and ALFRED?? HIS NPC VILLAGER??? he’s standing at the crafting table 24/7 making suspicious stew.”

Propaganda : Forced home to one of the earlier MCYTers to ever truly be trapped in the narrative, the Desert in Redstoner is a creative superflat world designed for redstone testing and inhabited by the lone YourPalRoss. Ross's days are spent tinkering with redstone machines, and his nights are... well, they don't exist. The Red Sun never sets. He hasn't seen the night in months. Also present within the Desert is a malignant entity known as the Red Sun, one which speaks to him through flashes of text on the screen and tells him to do... things. Keep your eyes closed. Trap your friends when they come to visit, make them stay with you. Kill your friends, they know too much. Keep those damn eyes closed. Oh, and as if this wasn't bad enough... the entire world is also a timeloop, one in which Ross invariably breaks down under the Red Sun and kills his friends, only to be guilt-tripped by a demon taking the form of one of those friends into resetting the timeline to try and save them "this time". He can't, of course. The Red Sun never sets

So first: his arms rotted off from the withering effect. Sausage/Gem weren't effected, bc sausage just blood letted out the infection for the blood sheep to heal and Gem is magic soooo yeah. He replaced them with mechanical arms powered by Redstone (Redstone triggers electrical signals to cause the crimson vines to contract like tendons/muscles)

Bc this happened he also affixed a permanent attachment of his elytra to his back, so he is one of the rulers w/ permanently on display wings (I mean unless he's sleeping but shhhh)

He is covered in Redstone powder and some empires citizens are afraid of him cus he looks like he's bloody all the time 😔 his red lined eyes don't help this either, or coughing/wheezing red smog clouds occasionally snrk

Also he is twins with Gem, his hair would also have a gradient if it was longer/washed more (he's gross) and his scarf is a gift from gem!!! It has Redstone stones on the end, kinda inspired by that one. Bloody pearl choker I'm like reminded of SNRK also adds to blood themes. I know sausage is the blood themer but shhhhhh hush hush. Ik some ppl hc he's a vampire, I don't vibe w/ that tho I like to think he's just a freak fr

Headcanons!

1: xB loves dinosaurs.

2: Scar had to be told that pet rocks weren't their own species of magical animal and were literally just rocks with googly eyes on them. This was after Joel got him one as a joke birthday present

3: The reason Tango's eyes are red is because he used to be scared of people finding out he was a vexling. So he put in red contacts to stop people seeing they were changing colour. He also started messing with redstone because it stained his hands and face red so no one would see the blue streaks.

4: Welsknight is Hermitcraft's official bs detector. He's spent long enough with the Helsmits to know when someone is lying or deceiving him.

5: Watchers are so used to summoning or using magic to do stuff that most are very very confused by redstone. Particularly redstone farms because why would you spend hours on this moving thing when you can just cheat and summon infinite melons? Grian, Pearl and Keralis (yes Keralis is a Watcher in my headcanon) all shared this mindset when they first joined Hermitcraft

6: Beef can speak villager. No really, he can.

7: Whenever it snows, the hermits all gather. At any point in their fun of building snow castles and snowmen and having fun, someone can get onto the highest visible place, yell 'WAR!' and it turns into an everyone vs everyone snowball war where the last person to surrender gets hot chocolate first.

8: Jevin can use the sun to light fires through himself like a magnifying glass. The first time he did this intentionally, he lit Hypno's hair on fire.

9: Jevin isn't allowed to use this ability anymore

10: Doc knits everyone socks and gloves for Christmas, especially the hermits who have hooves or feet that don't fit normal socks

11: Tango gets cold easily so whenever it's winter you'll see a fluffy blob of Tango shuffling around in the noodles poking them

12: Mumbo always has a spoon on him. Just in case.

13: Joe is the only non-vexling who's ever been allowed into the Vexling only bar (The Summoner). Just because the other vexlings think he's cool.

14: Zedaph is basically a god to the Helsmits. Whenever Xisuma wants something from them he promises that Zed can come over to visit and they immediately accept

15: False gifted Gem a magical wooden sword she can use in any worlds which doesn't have any effect except giving the death message [Player got washed up]

16: Skizz and Impulse have Dad-joke competitions. Grian's won every single one

17: Cub once held a funeral for a rabbit he watched die. Only after the entire 7 hour ceremony was over did he admit that he killed the rabbit himself because it jumped onto his redstone one too many times.

18: Cleo gifted Etho a guess-the-build Etho for Christmas. Etho loved the little guy so much he found/made/bribed hermits into giving him any and all other creations of this little guy. He now has so many he ran out of space in his own base and now hides them around Bdubs's for fun

19: Ren gets zoomies sometimes.

20: Keralis can speak 20 different languages. Only thing is, no one taught him any of them he just could always speak them.
