He was late to class, and got saddled with a detention. Should have bunked entirely, but he never built up the nerve to blow off authority figures that completely before, so he wasn’t going to start now.

The only thing was, he couldn’t get a detention today.

“Yes, yes, you all live very busy lives.” The student affairs officer rolled his eyes, “I’ve heard it all before, kid.”

“No, you don’t get it!” Flynn replied, “I have an appointment. An important one. Can’t miss it.”

“If it’s a doctor’s appointment, then your parents are needed to sign off on your exit.” The officer droned, much too practiced with this spiel.

Flynn gritted his teeth. So reasoning didn’t get him anywhere. That was fine. He could wait them out. Or, more accurately, he could wait until his file handler had had enough and called him about his tardiness.

As if summoned by the gods of luck, an electronic beeping started from somewhere inside. Yes! His get-out-of-jail-free card!

The officer looked at him, raising an eyebrow, “I’ve got my eye on you, kid.” They warned, turning around to pick up the phone. They listened to the other side’s side for a few moments, face slowly draining of color as they spoke.

“I- I’m sorry, but who is this?” They finally asked.

Flynn couldn’t hear what was being said on the line like other psychics might be able to, but he knew all the same what the answer was.

Similarly, he couldn’t read what was happening in the officer’s mind, but he could tell the exact moment he thought: oh shit.

He put the phone down with a clank and turned to face Flynn shakily, “You can go for today. Cover for your detention tomorrow.”

((Some thoughts on psychic powers and where I would put them on a tier list after reading about Avery's family:

Important note: I know there are a wide range of psychic abilities; I am simply going off the ones we have seen so far in the Pokemon universe(s). Because multiverse is a canon thing now for the franchise. Thank you, ORAS and SUMO!

Telekinesis, in my opinion, is one of, if not the strongest of psychic abilities and is far more impressive than telepathy. To levitate things, and people with your mind requires great mental strength, fortitude, concentration, and endurance. Despite common myths and beliefs, it takes many years of rigorous training to master telekinesis to its full potential. While many psychics have this as their first (and sometimes only ability/power) upon awakening and can seemingly use it with ease, they end up finding out when they're older that things are hardly that simple. Because telekinesis takes great strength and time to pull off, it is very easy to end up fatigued if you go full tilt right away. Only with time and practice can you build up your endurance and extend the duration of telekinesis without it putting a heavy strain on your mind and body. Telekinesis is not a power to be looked down on, or to be treated lightly for it is dangerous to both the user, and the one its used on.

In a similar vein, teleportation would be a close second. It takes a lot of concentration and power to physically teleport yourself from place to place, and it takes many years of training to extend the range of said ability. If you are not careful, you could either end up in the completely wrong place, thus potentially putting yourself in danger. You also run the risk of damaging your mind and body in the process, or losing parts of yourself (sometimes literally). This is also an ability not to take lightly.

At the bottom of the list I would put telepathy/mind reading. While it does take some measure of concentration to pick up on another's thoughts, and to block them (and yours) out, it's not nearly as taxing/a strain on the body and mind as the first two. Telepathy, more or less, is the way psychics communicate with one another, and others. It does take time and training to get it just right, but to have it be a far more impressive skill than telekinesis is, in my opinion, complete bullshit.))

WIP Not-Wednesday

Thank you for the tag @aurrieattorney!! I am going to tag uuuh @dogueteeth and @rangerdoubt and @thenightdayblogger even though it is Very Firmly not Wednesday anymore, if y’all are game.

What I’m working on right now is mooostly my AU Roulette entries + a couple prompt fills I’ve got close enough to done they might get posted soon so I won’t sneak peek them here lol. Here’s some snippets from each of the AUs under the cut -- I’ve done WAY more work on the first two whoops

Medieval AU (except I got distracted by the concept of knights and then by the concept of dragons so it’s. Very loosely Medieval)

“Anathema’s dead. You’re not them. They were--” human, Herald doesn’t say, and they snort, flashing sharp teeth. Easily frightened. Not worth the steel he wears.

Of course Anathema’s dead, they say, tilting their head. Silver scales scattering sunlight like mirrors. Unknowable, like this, wearing their secret face to the world. The wyrm, the danger, the thing crawled up from the well. No person here, not one that matters, anyway. Wind themself around whatever they damn well please, they’re far from the worst thing wound up in this mess of a kingdom. They certainly aren’t using the name. I’ll wear it if I like.

Detective AU (doing double duty as an Actually HG’s Sibling AU)

Jake. Again. “Stop harassing my secretary,” I say, and he folds his arms at me. 

“Stop ignoring my boss, then,” petulant, because he’s annoyed at being reduced to an errand boy. But then, there’s nobody else my sibling would trust to carry a message to me. And he’s caught between being pleased at the trust and annoyed at the inconvenience, and it’s loud. Ugh. 

“What do they want,” I say, flat. Galen pelts silent apologies in my direction, and I shrug, slightly, back at him. Hollow Ground is persistent, when they want to be.

“They’ve got a job for you. And they said to ask if you want to come over for dinner, to discuss the details..?” trailing off at the end, because we both know what my answer’s going to be.

I’ve been trying to get them to stop hovering over my shoulder like the world’s most annoying shadow, but Hollow Ground’s persistence aside, Dalia Cross has never been anything but consistent about sticking their nose in my business.

Annnd this is literally the entirety of what I have down for my last one, Secret Agent AU lol. I don’t know where it’s going which is probably why there’s so little of it still.

“You said not to call you Sidestep.”

“Don’t call me anything then. I’m not even supposed to be here.”

Herald’s smile grows forced, at the edges, but your telepathy’s the only way you pick up on that. He’s a good actor, you think, begrudgingly. And that’s never been your wheelhouse, so that’s good.

“Play nice,” Ortega, grinning, because he thinks it’s fun when you’re sharp, and you are here. 

“This is nice, Sparkles.” A noise of mock-offense at that.

Rarely did Kaimaunahi ever meet a foe so vicious, so powerful, so violent - let alone one that was a true equal to him in strength. Even rarer did he find a foe that could surpass his power.

And he could not remember the last time he met a foe that nearly killed him.

The battle, from what the King could recall of it, was as brutal as it was brief. He had homed in on a unusually strong source of radiation out in the Pacific, only to find it belonged to a similar-looking beast laying Hell upon an unfortunate human fleet. He held no strong affection for the crafters, but he would not allow such an unwarranted transgression - thus, he promptly met the beast in battle.

Teeth and claws drew blood from both King and Destroyer, proving they were of equal strength. His inner star-fire seared the beast's flesh, but Kaimaunahi had not been prepared for when the Destroyer unleashed their own tainted flames upon him. It only became apparent to him that his foe was of unnatural origin when the radiation-soaked lance of light burned far more harshly than usual - in a desperate act to keep himself from sustaining critical damage, he fired his own beam, causing the two to clash for a moment.

Then everything had gone white, as though the very Sun had fallen from the sky onto the two warring titans, and he could not remember anything of the battle beyond that.

Kaimaunahi could only guess that, were it not for the lingering radiation he could absorb and heal himself with from what was surely a blast of borderline apocalyptic scale, he would be dead. He vaguely recalled drifting on sea currents, wearily following the distant call of life-giving energy, crawling ashore to a ruined city, and then falling unconscious again. Now that the King had properly roused, he realized that this place had once bore testament to the Destroyer's fury.

That, and he was not alone.

While the King was still too weary to get up - let alone properly move from his impromptu resting place - he recognized the tiny, scurrying forms of humans around him, in suits designed to shield themselves from the life-energy that he fed upon. Even now his body passively drew in and processed the lingering radiation of the ruins to soothe his wounds.

And one of them was in front of his snout. Close enough to where he could all but feel their thoughts, vague blobs of concepts and terms buzzing around like a swarm of insects. Out of curiosity, he had reached out with his own consciousness and Touched them - Kaimaunahi could not deny the fact that it amused him slightly to watch the little thing clearly be startled by the sudden voice in their head.

'The touch of death. The touch of the Destroyer,' repeated the voice in Noda's mind - it was clearly not of human origin, yet it spoke in his tongue perfectly. It was ancient. Masculine, to some degree. Primordial.

If he turned, he'd find that one of the titan's golden eyes had fluttered open; still half-lidded, but acutely focused on him.

'This place - it has bore witness to the Destroyer's fury, has it not?'

Okay... So I'm in a way right now with the red tide and hormones..... But I did want to say some things about SINNERS while I have a little bit of mental energy.

Stack and Smoke are two sides of the same coin, yin and yang, red and blue, Italian and Irish gang clothing style... etc.

Some people are getting carried away with analysis and it's giving more projection of what you want it to be vs. what is.... Coogler himself has cited great fun tropey horror films and pop culture touchstones like Salem's Lot (the book not the movie) and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (which I love that that's a reference) he has said his most important takeaway is "ownership of art."

The act structure that gave us that classic "caper" set-up of all kinds of characters listening to the plan and then going "you sonavabitch, I'm in." for the juke joint was my favorite part of this TBH.

It is NOT a Christian "Come to Jesus" movie and I LOVE that about it. In fact, it's the opposite.

It's a "be true to self and your gifts in the face of any god or devil", movie.

BOTH women love interests (white presenting and full-figured and unambiguously Black ,--back to that yin and yang of the twins) were beloved by a twin, both fit the elemental nature of said twin, and both had to traverse death to be with their love.

As an aside.... loved hearing a southern accent from our Asian cousins, seeing the "not my problem" energy from the Choctaw hunters, and the reminder that there was actual ancestral cultural community before "whiteness" for white people too, and why many no longer have it...

LOVED LOVED LOVED the cultural details in the character work, setting, energy, etc.... ESPECIALLY Delroy Lindo's vocal cadence.

I loved what Coogler chose to NOT show to make the energy more impactful and palpable in both sensuality and scares.

I'll be the weirdo who prefers the pure blues vs. the remix but I LOVED seeing all the ancestors and descendents come and vibe with the music...I used to have recurring dreams of a multicultural ancestral world jam session, so "that scene" hit me hard.

Remmick just follows in the tradition of Coogler villains being compelling af, but ultimately WRONG because of an essential flaw in their logic (i.e. Killmonger's misogynoir and colonizing techniques and funnily enough Remmick's colonizing techniques, klan and black using vampire telepathy for a faux community peace)

I have seen no one else mention this, but I chuckled at Saul "List of Demands" Williams playing the preacher, aka Sammie's dad

the vampire nerd part of me absolutely rejoiced at all the "traditional" vampire warding aspects, ESPECIALLY the silver, something that is often wrongly asserted as being just for werewolves

loved how filthy and raunchy the language was when it came to desire... because that's real (and I hate purity culture which is very much now tied to the alt-right white Christo-fascist pipeline right now) AND centering women's pleasure and, in many cases audacious initiative. (ahem, I see you Ryan and I see how Zinzi's in the current state she's in, congrats!! *cough* this is the healthiest type of straight man sexual energy BTW)

BE WARY of the takes out there that are overly-projecting. It's neither religious nor hotepy. It's a Southern Gothic fable/folktale about a musician with a gift surviving a magical night....

YES it's full of ancestral energy, but ultimately the central message is about being true to self when it comes to ancestral gifts and community

IK I’ve miniposted about this before, but like.. Accents and quirks just do something to me. You know deep down, you’re into them too!! “English” is written as “Common” like in dnd, which I’m pretty sure is the canon language in twst

Riddle Rosehearts, that despite being raised all prim and proper in the queendom, just can’t drop his accent no matter how hard he studies. His niche lingo and references confuse everyone else- Even his own countrymen, because everything he says is outdated by at least a couple decades. It’s so much worse when you get into his head with all your “contemporary language”, it’s like a professional pickleball player trying to translate magicam into textbook logic.. Which if you’ve ever written a caption, DOESNT WORK. You love him all the same though, even if he’s a permanent senior <3

Octavinelle that’s made to learn multiple languages with vastly different systems for tone and dialect to even consider studying on land, and rely on you for translation in their first year :( Just imagine Floyd hanging off your shoulders, popping and clicking words in his native language to whisper the nastiest things he can muster- Just for your teachers to ask what he’s trying to say while he giggles into the fat of your blushy cheeks. Jade messing with your hands or mouth in public because “that is.. How we talk. At my home.” You’re smart enough to know they’re not that touchy under the sea, but you indulge him, as a treat for beating out his twin in appropriate articulation. Azul floundering (with elegance, ofc) in his first couple dealings while you whisper translations in his ear- You’re much too close, and he’s no guppy! <3

Jamil Viper, that unlike Kalim, doesn’t have all the professional teaching in common. He’s far from beginner, but there’s a clear divide- He’s self taught, and it gives him the cutest accent!! He slips into his native tongue most often when he’s upset and can’t communicate with all the adrenaline,, Maybe if you like the way he sounds so much, he’ll be willing to teach you a couple words! Can’t guarantee they won’t be targeted insults, though,, <3

Idia Shroud with an accent and stutter,, You can barely understand his common when he gets into those mumbly rants, and you’re the only who really cares what he’s saying in the first place! Eventually, you guys get into relationship-telepathy territory where you communicate almost exclusively with text and body language- But that doesn’t help your poor classmates, especially the ones in his dorm, that need him to speak for events and housewarden wisdom. Point for Idia, ig? Translator and partner acquired!! <3

Diasomnia with HEAVY accents and ANCIENT common vocabulary!!!! Lilia’s accent is the heaviest, and Sebek’s the lightest (even if he plays it up for his ego) but all of their vocab is a mash of textbook definitions and clunky, outdated slang. Silver has the easiest time with learning modern common on account of his native language still being human, but when he’s especially tired there’s zero common coming out of his mouth, and there’s been SO many incidents of him “speaking tongues”. Malleus hates his accent when he’s at school- It only makes it harder for people to understand him than it already is, but if you think it’s attractive I’m sure it lightens the blow <3

I may or may not get this job partially depending on whether I can scrape up anyone to serve as a reference. But I will never forget that this literal actual owner of an accounting firm asked me if I was a Gemini in my interview and said that he could tell because he's a Gemini too.
