Resource Wars: The Hidden Economic Interests Behind Conflicts in Manipur and Chin State
The ongoing conflicts in Manipur, India, and Chin State, Myanmar, are often seen through the lens of ethnic strife and political instability. However, beneath the surface lies a crucial but less-discussed factor: resource extraction and geopolitical competition. Both regions are rich in minerals, hydrocarbons, and other valuable natural resources, making them prime targets for economic exploitation. This article explores how these conflicts may be linked to strategic interests in resource extraction and regional control.
Manipur is home to chromite, limestone, and hydrocarbon reserves. In recent years, the Indian central government has taken steps to grant mining permits to private firms, particularly in the ophiolite belt, which contains large deposits of chromite (used in stainless steel production). Other valuable minerals, including limestone, have also attracted industrial interest.
Additionally, oil and natural gas exploration in Manipur has been on the rise, with various companies conducting surveys to assess potential reserves. The presence of these resources has made Manipur a significant area for economic expansion—raising questions about whether ongoing conflicts serve as a distraction while resources are secured for large-scale extraction.
Chin State, located across the border in Myanmar, is also rich in minerals, hydrocarbons, and rare earth elements. While Myanmar’s military government has largely controlled resource extraction, foreign corporations—particularly from China and India—have shown increasing interest in energy and mineral projects in the region.
Both Manipur and Chin State have experienced prolonged ethnic conflicts, leading to heavy militarization. In Manipur, ethnic tensions between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities have resulted in large-scale violence and displacement. In Chin State, ongoing clashes between ethnic militias and Myanmar’s military junta have caused significant instability.
Militarization serves multiple purposes:
Control over resource-rich areas: Heavy troop deployment ensures that valuable mineral zones remain accessible for extraction.
Displacement of local communities: By forcing indigenous populations to flee, resistance to large-scale mining and energy projects is weakened.
Suppression of local activism: Indigenous groups opposing resource extraction face repression under the guise of maintaining security.
Conflicts often result in mass displacement, which can create opportunities for corporations and governments to gain access to lands that were previously occupied by indigenous groups.
In Manipur, ethnic violence has led to thousands being displaced, making it easier for the government to push forward with mining and oil extraction projects.
In Chin State, instability has forced many to flee to India, reducing resistance to Chinese and Myanmar government-backed projects in the region.
India’s Act East Policy aims to strengthen economic ties with Southeast Asia, making Manipur and Chin State crucial geographical zones.
Infrastructure projects like the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project, connecting India to Myanmar’s Sittwe Port, show India’s commitment to using this corridor for trade and resource access.
Ensuring political and military control over Manipur and securing influence in Chin State helps India counter China’s growing presence in Myanmar’s resource sector.
China has invested heavily in mining, energy, and infrastructure projects in Myanmar, particularly in Kachin, Shan, and Chin states. By securing control over natural resources and trade routes, China strengthens its economic dominance in the region.
China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) includes projects in Myanmar that give it access to critical minerals and energy supplies.
India, on the other hand, is seeking to counterbalance this influence by developing its own economic corridors through Myanmar and Northeast India.
Are the Conflicts a Cover for Resource Extraction?
While ethnic tensions are genuine and deeply rooted, it is difficult to ignore the economic incentives behind these conflicts. The escalation of violence in resource-rich areas raises questions about whether instability is being exploited to facilitate large-scale mining, oil extraction, and infrastructure projects.
In both Manipur and Chin State, conflicts have created conditions where governments and corporations can expand their economic influence with less local resistance. The geopolitical competition between India and China further complicates the situation, as both nations seek to control vital trade routes and resource deposits in the region.
As the situation unfolds, it is crucial to examine who benefits from these conflicts—whether it is the local populations or external economic and political powers. Without addressing these underlying economic interests, peace in these regions may remain elusive.

Importance of Professional Mine Surveying by Dolphin Engineers: Delivering Accuracy and Safety Together
Precision is the one thing that matters in mining operations. The tiny mistake that can be made may result in a major mishap: not-so-effective resource extraction and potential danger for the workers themselves. This is where mine surveys play into action. Detailed and professional mine surveys will ensure safe, cost-effective, and hassle-free mining operations. Dolphin Engineer takes pride in providing superior mine surveying services to enable our clients to go about their projects with complete confidence.
Mine survey is the accurate measurement and mapping of land surface and subsurface, which helps to guide mining operations. The process helps determine the layout, volume, and quality of mineral deposits, thus enabling efficient extraction by the mining firm.
Furthermore, safe mine surveys are considered an important source for the workers and machines to work with precision regarding planned operations.
Safety: Another foremost priority area in mining is safety. Mines always deal with hazardous environments, and an accurate survey anticipates potential risks that may likely happen. Proper mine surveying assures the integrity of the tunnels and underground structures, reducing the chances of accidents like cave-ins or gas leaks.

It ensures cost efficiency since the organization makes the right decisions regarding mining and utilization of resources. Material wastage is reduced to its minimum, whereas the more valuable materials are available, thus saving time and money.
Compliance and Reporting To the Government: The regulations require submitting a report that shows several of the surveys, with absolute surety. A mine survey ensures that complies with all of these regulations by providing accurate information regarding land use, safety standards of the organization, and extraction of resources.
Long-Term Planning: In addition to any direct operational requirement, a mine survey is also of benefit in long-term planning. The data surveyed could be used to guide future development such as an organization can plan expansion or decommissioning at a time.

Resource Extraction 2 @resourceextraction this is a set of photograph I took while fishing on the North Umpqua River drainage last year. I was taken by the obvious disregard for the environment on the headwaters of such an iconic river drainage. The North Umpqua River has been recognized as a Wild And Scenic river. This national distinction and status however doesn’t protect it from resource harvesting. I get and understand the politics, however, I think it’s hard to see the “commitment to forest stewardship” that some corporations exhibit. Proof is in the pudding they say. This made me feel urgency in the need to photograph the site. #resourceextraction #art #pnw #clearcutforrest #rollieflex (at North Umpqua River) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByvwD63hVbY/?igshid=18w3gyfln44ry

Anthropocene; The current geological age, during which, human activity has been the dominant influence on climate and environment. Mary and I one day we’re traveling hwy 168 in southern oregon. Some of us that fish for steelhead trout know it as the NU hwy a wild and scenic area in southern oregon . On a side road that intersects the upper reaches of the North Umpqua river near Lemolo lake we found this large forest Clearcut. Debris and slash everywhere, it was a challenge to adventure off the dirt road that bisected the site. The North Umpqua is considered one of a few holy rivers to fly fish for steelhead, I felt an urgent need to document and use my creative/art passion to respond to what I felt is an assault on a fragile ecosystem. I understand the need and economics of harvesting trees for lumber. What I find offensive and I think is undeniable is a blatant disregard for the environment especially in an area with a wild and scenic designation. The title, Anthropocene, of this artist book is built upon a series of Satellite photographs of the Clearcut near the headwaters of the North Umpqua. The first Image is of two of the slag piles to be burned that I photographed at the site. The word Anthropocene is divide into syllables and hand cut into the pages of the main body of the accordion book, followed by the colophon. @resourceextraction Nature Remains, 2019 Diptych color photograph, hand cut text. 17x34 inches images made with medium format film camera, Clallam County, Washington State, Olympic Peninsula. #pnw #clearcut #art #photography These two images are of a clearcut site first harvested in 1920’s, then abandoned. The site is now referred to by some of the fly fishing locals as “The Temple”. When you walk the trail through The Temple, you can see the remnants/stumps and debris of what once was an old growth Doug fir forest. I was taken by the fecundity of the natural second growth from the devastation, as if the forest was creating an impenetrable tangled web of growth to fend off or protect it from further attack.
