The Cold Comfort Farm Crawl
By: rosemaryandrue
Welcome to the Cold Comfort Farm Word Crawl!
Cold Comfort Farm, written by Stella Gibbons in 1932, is my favorite book ever, and so here’s a word crawl based on it. This is aimed for those who want to do a nice long crawl but have their work broken up into small chunks - the challenge will become progressively tougher but shouldn’t be too intensive. Enjoy!
To Mr Anthony Pookworthy, Esq., A.B.S, L.L.R. Dear Mr Pookworthy, Stella Gibbons hopes this meagre offering is worthy of you! Dedicate yourself to your craft by warming up by writing for 3 minutes.
Chapter 1 Orphaned by parents she barely know, Flora lodges in the home of her brassiere-collecting friend, Mrs. Smiling. Write to the next hundred words as you ready yourself for dinner with Mrs. Smiling, Bikki, and your cousin Charles.
Chapter 2 Having made up her mind to go live with a relative, Flora writes letters to various aunts and uncles. Write for four minutes, one for each letter.
Chapter 3 The Starkadders learn that Robert Poste’s child is coming to stay with them. Write 100 words as the family argues over whether this is a good idea or not.
Chapter 4 “Did I coddle thee as a mommet for this?” Flora’s worst fears are realized - there is a Seth, and a Reuben too! Write for five minutes to send for your gum-boots.
Chapter 5 Flora meets the Starkadders, and is introduced to the Dominant Grandmother Theme that is Aunt Ada Doom. Write for ten minutes as you try to find someone to wash your curtains.
Chapter 6 Down in the cottage, Meriam is brought a-bed of a fine boy - her fourth. Write to the next one hundred words as you explain to her the concept of contraception.
Chapter 7 It is lunch time, and Reuben and Seth must be faced - write 100 words as you try to convince Reuben that you don’t want his land, and then another 100 words to avoid Seth’s ham-fisted seduction.
Chapter 8 It is time to quiver. Flora goes with Uncle Amos to see him preach about hellfire and brimstone, but unfortunately it makes her rather claustrophobic. Write for eight minutes as you make your way out of church.
Chapter 9 Flora goes in search of a decent meal to the local tea shop, where she meets the unmistakable Mr. Mybug. Write 300 words as you politely listen to him talk about Pard-spirit: A Study of Branwell Bronte.
Chapter 10 Aunt Ada Doom saw something nasty in the woodshed 70 years ago, and she has never been the same since. Write 150 words as you reflect on what it could have been.
Chapter 11 Flora finally catches up with Elfine, a rather free-spirited young lady who wants to be invited to a dance by her secret fiancé Dick Hawk-Monitor. Write for five minutes as you consider the rich inner lives of all these Starkadders.
Chapter 12 What a busy day you’ve had! Driving home with Harkaway, civilising Elfine, and retrieving your letters from Urk! Is it any wonder you let the bull out? Write 400 words as you let everyone know it was you who did it.
Chapter 13 After an edifying day in London, Elfine and Flora are ready for the dance - but the sukebind is blooming, and that is an ill omen. Write to the next 500 words as you try to make sure Aunt Ada Doom doesn’t find out.
Chapter 14 Flora is reunited with the urbane Claud Hart-Harris, and the quartet is off to the dance! Write for ten minutes as you contemplate that curious mix of tragedy, joy, and farce that is a country ball.
Chapter 15 Elfine and Dick’s engagement is announced, but the fruition of Flora’s greatest schemes lies still ahead. Everyone is awake and waiting for you at Cold Comfort Farm! Roll a die and write 5 minutes if it’s even, 15 if it’s odd as you try to find out how your luck will turn.
Chapter 16 Aunt Ada Doom has chosen this night of them all to hold the Counting. Amos announces his intentions to become a roving preacher, Urk takes Meriam in lieu of Elfine, and Aunt Ada Doom is utterly horrified. Write for 20 minutes as you wait to go to bed.
Chapter 17 Mr Neck and Mr Mybug have come to visit Cold Comfort Farm, and Seth is scouted for the movies. But how could one say no to such a red-blooded hunk of a man? Write 500 words as Mr. Neck figures out how to convince the Starkadders to relinquish his prize.
Chapter 18 Seth is gone, Mr. Mybug has transferred his affections to Rennet, and Amos has gotten his hands on a Ford car. Write to the next thousand as you gossip with Mrs. Beetle.
Chapter 19 Flora receives a marriage proposal, but alas it will be Mark Dolour’s Nancy who will be mistress of Cold Comfort Farm in the end, for certainly Flora doesn’t want it! Write for ten minutes as you tactfully turn Reuben down.
Chapter 20 Aunt Judith, poor soul, is finally hied to a psycho-analyst. And Flora has the flash! Write 300 words as you sit closeted in mysterious discussion with Aunt Ada Doom.
Chapter 21 It’s Midsummer Day, and a beautiful day for a wedding - Elfine and Dick’s! Write for half an hour as you corral all the crying womenfolk.
Chapter 22 Aunt Ada Doom is finally downstairs, and off to Paris in her plane! But she’s not the only one leaving, for Flora has called Charles to come to pick her up as well. Write 400 words as you wait for him to arrive.
Chapter 23 How peaceful it is, to have set everything to rights, and now to have such a lovely reward. Write to the next thousand as you consent to marry Charles.
Good luck!

Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons
Summary from the publisher: When sensible, sophisticated Flora Poste is orphaned at nineteen, she decides her only choice is to descend upon relatives in deepest Sussex. At the aptly-named Cold Comfort Farm, she meets the doomed Starkadders: cousin Judith, heaving with remorse for unspoken wickedness; Amos, preaching fire and damnation; their sons, lustful Seth and despairing Reuben; child of nature Elfine; and crazed old Aunt Ada Doom, who has kept to her bedroom for the last twenty years. But Flora loves nothing better than to organise other people. Armed with common sense and a strong will, she resolves to take each of the family in hand. A hilarious and ruthless parody of rural melodramas and purple prose, Cold Comfort Farm is one of the best-loved comic novels of all time.
I had a hard time starting this one, but once I got about half-way in, I was emotionally invested in this ridiculous family. And if I ever have a cow, I’ll name it Feckless.
- if you think too long about some of the solutions Flora finds for the rest of the family, you’ll notice that it’s absurdly quick how some matters get settled, but it suits the flow of the novel, and Flora even has a moment of needing a nap because things are happening too fast!
- I loved the ending — it was perfect — though I could’ve wished for a few love letters in the middle.
- the characters were all larger than life, which is perfect for a comedy.
- I may need to see if I can get a hold of a copy of the movie!
- but I may never forgive Ms. Gibbons for not telling me if the goat lived and what rights? (iykyk lol)
Decided to keep track of the books I’ve read this year because I’m always reading something, but can never remember anything when people ask for book recs

These are books I’ve read for myself. I’ll make a separate post for books I read aloud to the kids.

One Dress a Day Challenge
June: Weddings
Cold Comfort Farm / Kate Beckinsale as Flora Poste and Sheila Burrell as Ada Doom
These are the outfits Flora and Ada wear to the wedding of Reuben Starkadder, Flora's cousin and Ada's ... grandson, I think, or maybe grandnephew? Both follow the pattern of a white dress with black hat, similar to the costume worn by Bette Davis as Mrs. Van Schuyler in the 1978 Death on the Nile.
Flora is very up-to-date 1930s, with an interesting sort of built-in scarf at the neckline of her dress. Ada Doom is more throwback-Edwardian in style, with some collar jewelry and a fur shoulder wrap.

Guess how it goes? 😉 Facial expressions! 👌🌟👑 Btw, did you know that this film is a literary satire on 19th century British novels? . posted on Instagram - https://instagr.am/p/CDwFsQYnA0a/
