"...why do you even know how to cook in the first place?"

rin glances over his shoulder at izumo. it's a shockingly blunt question- but he's hardly surprised by it. if anything, he's amazed it's taken one of his friends this long to ask. turning over the steak he's cooking, he ponders the question. why did he teach himself to cook?

"my mom was already teaching me before," and he doesn't elaborate on what he means by before, "-so I figured I might as well keep at it. you know, adjusting to having a body like this takes time! teaching myself how to cook was perfect for that!"

izumo just gives him a disinterested hum, and doesn't probe further. he's a bit grateful.

he hadn't lied to her! learning how to cook had been super helpful! if he's being honest, his first body wasn't his mom's finest piece of work- but he kind of gets it. she was probably desperate to finish it- with every day that ticked by, she must have gotten more and more worried that the life support that had kept his human one alive wouldn't be enough anymore.

...but it was more than that.

maybe it was because he didn't need to anymore, but one of the first things he'd noticed that his mom and yukio weren't eating right. his mom was a fantastic cook, but they mostly just ate convenience store bentos and takeout. there were dishes piled up in the sink, and trash overflowing in the bins- as if he'd been his mom's only real focus.

they probably also felt guilty, he thought.

he'd loved eating, once upon a time- that was his whole reason for wanting to learn how to cook in the first place. now that he couldn't anymore, they probably found it hard to enjoy a meal without him. which was a load of crap, and the best way to show that to them was to start cooking!

"...do you even have taste buds?" suguro asks.

"as a matter of fact, I do not!" rin replies. "so it was a lot of guesswork, or getting other people to taste test. here. shiemi, how's the sauce?"

he pops a spoonful in shiemi's mouth. she swishes it around and tells him its delicious. he glows at the praise, finishing the dish off by drizzling the sauce over the steaks. shima had won some high quality ones in a lottery, so naturally, he'd brought them to the cooking expert. he serves his friends, and then brings his mom and yukio's share down into the lab.

(the old man is out, but there's one leftover for him.)

rin sits on the kitchen stool as he watches his friends eat. they compliment his cooking, and he puffs out his chest. that's right! he doesn't have a fancy robot brain or anything, so that's pure talent and experience right there! praise him more, in fact!

he kind of likes this, he thinks.

And Rice Pudding is an aspiring rockstar/metal band player bc I wanted him to be on stage... differently. There's lots of things you can do on a stage. And metal is one of them.

i’ve never had taquitos before, but i think i’d like them cuz i like tacos 😋 there aren’t a lot of mexican restaurants in my area, but now you’ve inspired me to explore around!!

rolled up food in general—off the top of my head, i like a lot of them! swiss rolls, rice paper rolls, sushi rolls, burritos, cinnamon rolls, rolled omelettes, kimbap, spring rolls, fried bean curd rolls, fruit roll ups...

Announcement time!!

My first multi-chapter fic is finally ready to be shared and chapter 1 drops THIS MONDAY!!

It’s an assassination mystery Lance whump with a slight medical lean + established klance. It’s 8 chapters and ~50k words and I’m SO excited to share it with everyone!

Also note!! This fic is COMPLETE. Chapters will be released twice a week, every Monday/Thursday, until they’re all posted, so if you only read completed works, don’t worry! This will be all out before the end of May 😁

Okay went to Petsmart tonight and puppy was a hellion!!!!!! It went like

> my shift ends at 17:30, puppy starts screaming in crate at 17:25

> I clock out at like 17:40 because I have a project damn it

> take puppy outside obviously he has to poop

> puppy won't poop

> okay it's 18:00 we need to buy kibble

> starts screaming halfway through the drive to Petsmart

> pull over at a park where there is a cop, a car with all the doors open, a random dog roaming on the creekside, and a flattened squirrel

> puppy won't poop

> okay the vibes here suck we're going to Petsmart

> puppy screams the whole way there

> get out of the car

> puppy pees like three times

> PUPPY WON'T POOP

> stand in the parking lot awkwardly for 15 minutes because I know puppy will poop inside if he doesn't go out here

summer: everyone get on my spinach & cheese omelette agenda 🤩 anyway she also loves arroz con pollo. it was one of the first meals she taught yang how to make.

the twins: raven's is braised rabbit & qrow's is venison stew... they probably only get to eat it once or twice a year. (branwen twins "don't make it obvious we grew up in the woods" challenge: failed.) a plate of steak & potatoes would also make them happy. butttt their favorite childhood meal was oyakodon 👍 i can imagine qrow making it for ruby & yang sometimes when they were young.

tai: mapo tofu (with extra chili flakes) he seems like the type to have a pantry shelf just for a hot sauce collection. second place is his shrimp fried rice. yang is allergic to shellfish. this was a crushing blow to him.
