Hello Y'all, well, that was fucking awesome. Thank you to everyone who came out to the first Sunday Matinee. Our next Sunday Matinee at Low Fidelity in JC Heights is July 17th. Before my last First Thursday I put together a set that I never got to spin out. I call it the Cadet Set since the songs are based on the sound created by the amazing arrangements and production of Richard Evans and Charles Stepney. There is an aspect of the sound that can be described as an evolution of Phil Spector's Wall of Sound. Like Spector there is a beautiful clarity that cuts through the layer of "fog" created by the lush echos and expansive room tone. Sometimes the effect is simple and others it seems to be just on the edge of overpowering but it never obscures, disturbs, or interferes with the music. Marlena Shaw's "California Soul is a great example. The horns and strings sound almost distant and there is a similar sound to the drums until the snare is isolated. The snare jumps out to the front with a beautiful snap. Then, as Ms. Shaw begins to sing, everything seems to line up behind her but only until she gets to the chorus, then the music swirls around her like a warm embrace. In the outro she seems to slip down inside it and she floats away. Ahmad Jamal "Ahmad Jamal '73" 聴いて感心した現代的でとても美しいアルバムを3枚紹介したいと思います。 ジャマル通算13枚目、70年代はどんなジャマル？ 72年チック・コリア"Return To Forever"に代表されるフュージョン... 73年"Head Hunters"に代表されるファンク・ブーム... 伝統的なジャズが隅に追いやられ、他の領域の音楽と融合し細胞分裂し始めた時代です。 全く知らなかったのですが、ジャマルはHip Hopシーンからも多大なリスペクトを受けるジャズ・ピアニスト。で、彼が1973年10月にリリースしたサンプリング世代にも高い人気を誇る20thセンチュリー移籍アルバムが本作です。 さて、私の苦手なエレクトリック・ピアノですが、本作は何故か全く嫌悪感なく聴けるんです。爽やかです。初めてかも知れません。驚いたのはジャマルのセンス？ジャマル・マジックかな。マイルス・デイヴィスが惚れ込んだはずです。リチャード・エヴァンスのオーケストラ・アレンジも心地よく秀逸。ベースは完璧にモダン・ジャズですが、音は新しい。新しいけど、革新的とか先鋭的とか、違和感とか無理矢理感とかを感じません。優しさと包容力があり、メロディアスで円やかで音色も尖ってなくて美しい。 正直あまり期待していなかったのですが、なかなか素晴らしいアルバムだと思います。 ただし、音質は軽くてポップミュージックかソウルみたいな感じで、ジャズ？でしょうか。 このジャンルは全く分からないのですが... DJ PremierがFat Joe "Shit Is Real (Remix)"でサンプリングしたWarのカヴァーSide 1-1"The World Is A Ghetto"、Das EFX "Microphone Master (Remix)"で使われたStylisticsのカヴァーSide 1-2"Children Of The Night"、Stevie WonderのカヴァーSide 1-3"Superstition"は、あぁと分かるお馴染みの曲、Curren$y "Elevator Musik"ネタのFender Rhodesが気持ちいいソウル・ジャズSide 2-2"Sustah, Sustah"、ファンク・チューンSide 2-4"Peace At Last"等を収録。 サンプリングネタ盛りだくさんの人気アルバムとのことです。 またしても我が道を行くジャマルの才能と別の一面が見られる聴いておくべき一枚ではないでしょうか。 1-1 "The World Is A Ghetto" (Dickerson, Miller, Brown, Scott, Oscar, Jordan, Allen) 1-2 "Children Of The Night" (Linda Creed, Thom Bell) 1-3 "Superstition" (Stevie Wonder) 2-1 "Trilby" (Orlando Murden) 2-2 "Sustah, Sustah" (Ra Twani Za Yemeni) 2-3 "Soul Girl" (Joel Beal) 2-4 "Peace At Last" (C. Dorothy Ashby - "Soul Vibrations" b/w "Lonely Girl" (Cadet Concept cat. 5604) Very early on in my education of Soul, Funk, R&B, Jazz and Soul Jazz I discovered my my love of all things Checker, Cadet and Cadet Concept and anything Chess related. While working for the label Grooovy Sounds Unltd we were considered a comp based on the insane records scattered throughout the catalog. While compiling release information for each cut on, Grooovy Sounds Unltd. & Mr. Fine Wine Present Vital Organs Volume One I had several very lengthy and informative phone calls with Kenneth Higney. I had no idea who he was when I was talking to him. Ken’s experience licensing and packaging the Chess family of labels was invaluable to the release of our compilation. I learned more from him than all my research sources combined. One of our conversations surrounded around our love of Richard Evans and Charles Stepney. At the time my favorite track was Ray Bryant’s “Up Above The Rock,” but a close second was “Soul Vibrations.” Unfortunately the band is not credited on the LP or 45 but I do know Phil Upchurch is the guitarist. Considering Evans’ favored players we can only speculate on the band. The drums pound in a very similar way to the Soulful String sessions so I can assume it is Morris Jennings. There is a mood created between the Harp, guitar and strings that is very spiritual, similar to Alice Coltrane’s “Journey to Satchidananda,” Earth, Wind & Fire - “Bad Tune,” I love the addition of Harp and Kalimba to Funk, Soul and Soul Jazz. This is a stock copy with drill hole. Stock copies seem to be rare as hen’s teeth.
