repcomm character's favorite parts of building armor in Costuming Club AU
Walon Vau- sanding. (the psychopath) he likes to get a printed item totally perfect and he has the patience to do it. because sanding a print is similar to torture because he has an eye for detail! he has the process down to an absolute science. resin coat, bondo thinned with acetone, automotive priner, wet sanding. but he won't do it for you- he's going to insist on teaching you his process. good luck.
Kal Skirata- weathering. it's one of the final steps in building a kit, and really pulls everything together and makes it look lived-in and real. and you get to be really creative with it- singe some things, build salt and hairspray texture into the paintjob, literally cut something up, physically damage a plate, make an unholy paint slurry to slap on and badly clean off, mist spraypaint, use bleach, emulate rust... you can really go ape shit. literally the opposite of sanding
Bardan Jusik- sewing! he's got like 3 machines- a regular heavy duty, one specifically for leather, and a serger. he loves the entire process, designing the item, modifying or drafting a pattern, selecting materials, mockups, cutting, construction, details. he loves seeing an item come together out of fabric. and then he chickens out on weathering and hands it to kal. he's made a lot of casual wear star wars clothes for himself!
Etain Tur-Mukan- WEAPONS. scratch built blasters, resin printed knives, large blaster assembly in a mix of printing and scratch building, spears, lightsabers, all of it. she collects greeblies and LOVES finding little bits to stick on a gun to really make it swarzy. great at painting weapons. can do some lights on her own but recruits help for anything involving coding.
Arligan Zey- actually isn't in the hobby for the making of the costumes, he's here for the community and trooping, mainly. does some basic sewing. mostly outsources/commissions things he doesn't want to do, but he enjoys going to armor parties and helping with whatever people need a hand with
Ordo Skirata- sintra fabrication. he's great at plate shaping. dude could make a goddamn bo katan chestplate out of sintra, do not ask me how. a huge proponent for scratch building as much as possible, prefers not to use 3d printed parts. for one thing you have to sand them, which only real freaks enjoy doing, they're also less durable. sintra all the way.
Mereel Skirata- 3d printing. it's incredible all the things you can make! maintaining a machine is a hobby all of it's own! 3d printing entering the hobbyist realm opened huge possibilities! and if you hate sanding, you should hear about resin printing.
Jaing Skirata- coding and electronics. he helps etain with finishing touches on blasters, such as sound effects and really fancy lights. all his shit has light effects in it, small coded screens that rotate through pictures and text. the amount of shit he can cram in a helmet is truly incredible. he's got fans, hearing assist, voice amp, and lights in there. has also made a lot of lightsabers
A'den Skirata- helmets. specifically helmets. he's done a lot, and sells them. he has several molds and has made his own helmet model. enjoys finishing and painting them, sometimes takes commissions for fully finished helmets.
Atin Skirata- coding and robotics. likes moving parts. because of safety rules prohibiting motorized weapons in armor, he mainly builds droids. does whistling birds and moving rangefinders and the like, but really enjoys building astromechs.

Top 5 toy-driven anime for boys? For some reason I've been really noticing lately how much of the magical girl genre is essentially really pretty toy commercials and I'm kind of fascinated now by whatever the gendered flipside of that is.
Keroro Gunso

Keroro's a funny case because it wasn't always a toy driven franchise, it was just a boy's comedy manga heavy on anime references/parody and romcom hijinks, but once Sunrise & Bandai decided to be a sponsor for the anime adaptation you better believe it became one.
One aspect you have a team of color coded alien critters that are screaming to be made into marketable plushies. Each one even has a corresponding human character they're best friends kids can identify with. So there's that merch avenue
On the other hand you have Keroro's great love of Gundam model kits, a trait they leaned into hard. The show served not only to promote Keroro's toys but also real world Gundam models and other Bandai ventures. The funniest part of the 3rd movie to me is when they're all building a giant gundam model to fight against the bad guy and as a test of their friendship - and when they finish an orchestral cover of "Tobe! Gundam" plays in the background. Gundam models can solve all your problems kids!
2. Digimon

Where to even start with Digimon man...
It's strongest aspect as a toyline frachise was selling these guys with the ideal of having your own personal pet that can have conversations with you and all beat up your bullies, save you from danger, loves you unconditionally and help you grow into the best version of yourself. Digimon are the ultimate magical girl mascots if you ask me. While Pokemon has a big emphasis on collecting and working together as a big team - I like Digimon's spin on making it more personal.
3. SDF Macross

Macross may have more of a reputation for its music these days but in the 80's it was all about the giant robots & transforming planes! The VF-1S Valkyrie also went on to famously be added to Hasbro's Transformers toy line so when Harmony Gold wanted to make Robotech toys they couldn't sell it! 80's toy deals were a mess! Love it!
That all aside, the heart of Macross is it's drama and it's analysis of humanity adapting to weird af conditions. What do we fight for, how do we solve conflicts, how do we create, how to we continue to grow - the answer is to sing pop music until the aliens leave us alone. In my mind the planes & robots are just a fun bonus to everything else lol.
4. Yu-Gi-Oh

I had a huge Yugioh phase in early High School so I gotta mention it even if I wasn't really into it for the toys. I liked the monsters and the characters/story and tried to get into the card game but it didn't stick. I didn't have a hard time learning the rules though.
5. Saint Seiya

I'll be real, I've never been really into Saint Seiya's story or characters much, but I LOVE its aesthetics. If I was a kid in the 80s I probably would've gone nuts for this. A bunch of cool fighters named after stars and you can go and collect them all and collect all their cool outfits? I keep trying to get into it each iteration (the closest was probably Saintia Shou or Saint Seiya Omega) and it never sticks, but dang it looks cool

My Tiny Genius, a SpongeBob SquarePants ficlet
After a long day of once again trying and failing to steal the Krabby Patty Secret Formula, Plankton is feeling down in the dumps. It's up to Karen to cheer him up.
Fic is under the cut!
There were many words to describe the Chum Bucket, and pleasant certainly was not one of them. Overall it reeked of filth, grime and all sorts of health code violations. A certain musty odor seemed to always linger in the air, no matter how much air freshener one used. Truly, it was a wonder this place was still in business. There were many theories as to why, but truly no one except for the restaurants’ owners really knew.
One of said owners was in the lobby, waiting as she always did for her husband when he was off with one of his schemes. Karen was standing in the room in her mobile apparatus, her screen blank as she waited ever so patiently. Best case scenario Plankton would simply fail as usual. Worst… the Chum Bucket was blown to smithereens again. Neither outcome was good, but it was obvious which one was more favorable.
Finally, a small tapping sound came from one of the doors. He was back. Karen wheeled over to the red double doors and let the poor man in. He was a mess. He was covered in ash and some bruises, and she was immediately concerned. “Plankton-” she began.
“Not now honey.”
Plankton sulked off, no doubt on his way to the lab. “Plankton!”
The tiny organism turned around to face his computer wife. “What?”
“I have dinner ready.”
“I ain’t in the mood for holographic meatloaf.”
He turned back around and went on his way. Karen put her robotic arms on where her hips would be and rolled on after him. “What kind of attitude is that? At least let me patch you up! It looks like it hurts!”
“No it- ow. Ok fine.”
Karen bent over and picked up the creature in her metal palms and gently lifted him up and began to wheel him into the lab area. She set him down on a counter and got out the first aid kit that was for this sort of thing.
“How’d it go”, she said as she began to clean his wounds.
“OW! Easy!”
“Sorry sweetie. But how did things go? Didja get that formula this time?”
“What does it look like? Nope. I failed again. Always.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“I… I can’t do this.”
“Can’t do what?”
“What do you think?! I can’t get that formula! Krabs is always one step ahead!”
“Oh hon, surely you’ll get it next time”, Karen said, giving Plankton a little pat on the back which caused him to fall flat on his face.
“Ow.”
“Sorry.”
Plankton stood, and sighed. “That’s what you always say. I always go for it again, and it blows up in my face! Literally! Look at all these inventions. Failures. All of them.”
Plankton’s eye was beginning to tear up.
Karen felt her circuits beginning to tingle with pity. Poor little fella. She remembered all of the earlier formula-nabbing schemes, and how motivated and eager her husband was. With each failed plan Plankton grew ever more weary, which was odd as he was usually quite the tenacious type.
“Oh Plankton”, Karen said tenderly.
“Oh Karen! I’m a failure!”
Karen gasped in horror. “You are NOT!”
“How?”
“For starters, you build all these amazing inventions that are way ahead of their time! You’re brilliant!”
“Go on.”
“You went to college!”
“Yeah!”
“And you're gonna GET that formula!”
“Yeah!”
Plankton made sure to say the last year extra loudly, clearly filled with his usual overinflated ego once again. It usually never took too long to reignite his drive via a small pep talk, something Karen was very happy to provide for her beloved single celled spouse.
“I am going to get the formula, and make Krabs eat dirt!”
“I know you are, honey. But I think you should rest or eat first.”
“No I- ow. Yeah alright.”
“That's the spirit, little guy. Now let's go and relax for a while. You've earned it.”
Karen picked up her now relieved husband, and began to wheel them towards their living quarters so the poor little thing could rest.
“I love you, my tiny little genius.”
“Heh, love you too babe.”
And so the pair of strange lovers were off, for now they would relax and perhaps discuss oh so evil, diabolical and lemon scented plans for the future.

First year of college; 100-level robotics class. We had to build line-followers out of very old lego mindstorms kits (essentially large primitive arduinos). These kits were front-wheel drive, with two motors that could be turned on or off with no speed control, one for each side. My entire project code was (paraphrased it's been years):
while(Left(!sensor.read()) || Right(sensor.read()));
There was no award for shortest solution other than the prof getting somewhat angry at me for turning in a functional oneliner for an assignment that generally ran 200-300 lines.
