Flashback: Boom Boom Pow - Black Eyed Peas

Tommy Richman's 'Million Dollar Baby' is the #1 song for the fourth week now, with Billie Eilish in second place, surprisingly not quite managing to get 'Lunch' up to the podium. Shaboozey's 'A Bar Song (Tipsy)' and Sabrina Carpenter's 'Espresso' - the two songs I'm rooting for to get to #1 are lurking just behind in #3 and #5 respectively, so keep your fingers crossed.

In the meantime, we'll flashback fifteen years to 2009 when the #1 song was Keri Hilson's 'Knock You Down'. Since we've already covered that one, we'll look at the #2: 'Boom Boom Pow' by Black Eyed Peas.

I kind of dissed 'Boom Boom Pow' when I talked about it in the Keri Hilson post, and maybe I was a little too harsh. It's not a great song by any means, but it's not the worst thing either. This is the kind of song that was made to be played in nightclubs and it's thumping rhythms and beats no doubt worked perfectly in that setting.

I probably wouldn't really listen to it outside that context though. There's definitely some downsides here as well: the autotune that was everywhere back in the 2000s in distractingly present, and the lyrics are just... not it. Although I will admit that the "I'm so 3008, you're so 2000 and late" is kind of iconic (but in a stupid way). There's also a little lyrical shout out to Daft Punk's 'Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger' and I gotta say, drawing attention to a significantly better band and their significantly better dance song is maybe not the best idea in the world, because it only makes your song look worse in comparison. Although, to be fair, it's also possible the reference is to Kanye West's 'Stronger' which came out two years earlier and hit #1.

'Boom Boom Pow' also features a vocal sample from Sweet Mercy and Rowetta's 1990 house song 'Reach Out' - another song that's noticeably better than this one. I guess the one thing you can say for Black Eyed Peas (and specifically Will.i.am in the producer role here) is that they have great taste in music.

And to Will.i.am's credit he's fully open about the fact that he made this song to be played in clubs and not on the radio. Despite that though, 'Boom Boom Pow' did become a big hit on the charts. It peaked at #2 in NZ, but hit #1 in a bunch of other countries including the UK and USA.

Black Eyed Peas are still making music (with Fergie swapping out for J Rey Soul) but they haven't had much chart attention since 2011. Their old songs are fairly well liked though and I could see them getting back into the charts through nostalgia alone if they released the right song. Although perhaps we may have to wait til 3008.

i was watching a documentary on factory records and then rowetta just outright says that tony wilson was obsessed with shaun ryder and like. i knew that however to hear it being said out loud by someone who was there was quite something. i would read the hell out of that fic but unfortunately there are apparently no happy mondays rpf warriors. however as tony wilson himself said "the hacienda must be built" (it wasn't him it was a situationist who said it but anyway) (ie i should write the damn fic myself). this post makes no sense

I first became aware of this scene when I came across the Ruthless Rap Assassins — a rap trio from Hulme credited with planting the seeds for grime, with their debut Killer album described by The Face as both the first and the greatest rap record Britain ever produced, "in light of the fact that almost everyone else has been chasing Brooklyn's coat tails, affecting phoney New York accents, and trying to pretend they were born on the other side of the ocean". While East Coast hip-hop evidently had a strong influence on the group, there's something uniquely Mancunian about their sound: the broad accents slipping into occasional American inflections; lyrics about the Windrush generation and their experiences of racism in the North; a rough, DIY sound born of minimal equipment and training; and a broad range of influences resulting in a style of lyricism that fluctuates between the humorous and the highly considered. They even came up with a name for their pioneering genre - The North Hulme Sound — a title so provincial as to be almost comical. How many high-calibre rappers could there possibly be from North Hulme?

Why the lack of commercial success? Everyone I ask - Greg, Gerald, Nicky, the three Rap Assassins — answers with the same two reasons: the overshadowing of Manchester's hip-hop scene by the indie and rave scenes, and institutionalised racism, though it would be wrong to separate the two. "[Hip-hop] wasn't viewed - and it should have been, very much so - as part of the whole Manchester thing," Greg says. This viewpoint is reinforced by the fact that Kermit only achieved mainstream success afterthe Rap Assassins parted ways, when he joined Mancunian indie heroes Shaun Ryder and Bez in forming Black Grape — a band objectively worse than his former rap group.

"They were pushing Manchester as an indie city," says Carson, "but there's a lot more to us than that." Kermit agrees: "We were a hip-hop city. We had a certain tilt in our walk."

Gerald adds that the black musicians of Manchester never had the same "leg up" as the indie scene received from Tony Wilson. He lists a number of exceptionally talented black Mancunian musicians who never got the credit they deserved, primarily black women: Rowetta from the Happy Mondays, and Diane Charlemagne from 52nd Street, who he describes as the city's own Billie Holiday. "For some reason, Manchester always seemed to fail when it came to black British people. It was a pattern. They'd get one chart record, and they'd disappear." Why? "Because they were black," He answers. "I can't really find another way around it. Cause they had talent, and they had energy, but something was holding them back from success."

WHAT A SUPERB BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND!

Well I don’t know about you, but I had the most fantastic Bank Holiday Weekend in Glasgow, Brighouse and Stockport despite the disappointment of two short notice cancellations at the start of the extended weekend.

Firstly, my Thursday gig in Cardiff got cancelled in the morning due to the weather and Storm Lilian. I was supposed to be DJing at the Bay Series New Order afterparty at Clwb Ifor Bach but because the main show got cancelled, the afterparty did too, so apologies for that.

On the Friday I was supposed to be performing with Haçienda Classical at Crooked House Live in Lichfield as well as DJing at an afterparty. However, the event got cancelled on the Wednesday but I can’t apologise for that because it was through no fault of The Haçienda whatsoever and completely down to the promoters who announced that the cancellation was “due to unforeseen circumstances”. This was not the case at all and we are all quite angry about not being able to perform as advertised. The scores of people involved in the show both on and offstage were now unable to work and, like me, had probably turned down other offers due to already being booked. I know you were angry and disappointed too based on the feedback received.

However, things got completely back to normal on the Saturday as I made the train journey to Glasgow for STREETrave 35 at SWG3 where I DJ’d in the TV Studio after CJ Mackintosh. Other DJs on the bill included Paul Oakenfold, Darren Emerson, Michael Kilkie, Jon Mancini and more and it really was a fantastic event with such a great atmosphere throughout this magnificent multi room venue.

On the Sunday I returned to England to DJ at the Our House event near Brighouse for a short afternoon set before heading to Stockport to DJ at the wonderful Moovin’ where I played in the Mini Moo arena to such an up-for-it crowd.
