he only manages to mumble the smallest “mi cielo, you don’t really have to…” in response to the firm but loving ministrations of your fingers.

he hums at the moist heat of wet towels as they circle and weave around his skin. it’s light brown, warm with a flush of embarrassment, and clearly irritated by the scarab that has wedged itself to his spine.

you’ve both found your own ways to love kaji-da; slowly but surely addressing its very surreal existence as part of your relationship. but like any part of a relationship, your love for it doesn’t necessarily mean it can’t be an annoyance at times.

particularly, at times like this where jaime has awkwardly stumbled into your room, late for a stay-at-home movie date with an embarrassed smile on his face and sweat soaking his mess of dark curls.

“class ran over and then well… see, there was a car crash and i thought the police had it handled, but then kaji pulled me and…”

he had rambled, you had sighed and soon any annoyance you might have felt was replaced with an amused shake of your head and an insistence that he sit down to rest.

“always gotta be a hero, huh, kaji?” you whisper and jaime shivers at the kiss you leave on his shoulder blade. you may be addressing the precocious bit of alien tech by name but jaime knows you’re really talking to him, teasing his propensity to always help out wherever and whenever he can.

and maybe, he asserts to himself mentally, that’s okay.

perhaps it’s alright to take pride in being the blue beetle and thrusting himself into danger with powers and gear that he still doesn’t fully understand.

but even more so, perhaps it’s okay to take a rest. to sit and listen to old boleros on the bed of the prettiest person he knows as their fingers cover him in the smoothness of hibiscus and coconut scented lotion. to let you bandage and tease him, help him destress. maybe it’s okay for him to moan out an ask that you work your hands higher to where the main point of the soreness is.

he’s stuttering and sweet; all too unused to asking for help and all too tired of kaji-da’s mentions that he’s experiencing a higher than average heart rate and blood flow. but he rolls his eyes and chuckles at the comments only he can hear.

“kaji sayin’ something?” you surmise with a raised eyebrow.

“nada. don’t worry about it.” he shakes his head and leans back into your touch with that ever-delightful smile and absolute adoration in his wide brown eyes.

"Doña Isabel Barreto (1567–1612) was one of the first female admirals in history. She was married to Alvaro de Mendaña, the Spanish navigator, who discovered the Solomon Islands and the Marquesas Islands in the Pacific. But her husband died on his last expedition enroute from Peru to the Pacific, leaving her in command.

Their expedition team had originally left the port of Callao on 16 June 1595 in search of the land of Ofir, a mythical land mentioned in the Bible. This Biblical land of King Solomon was believed to be located in the West across the Pacific Ocean. Although their expedition ended in a disaster, Mendaña founded a short-lived colony on the Solomon Islands on behalf of the kings of Castilla. Isabel Barreto not only lost her husband but also a large part of her dowry (which included the galleon) that had financed the expedition. But, together with the pilot, Pedro Fernandez de Quiros, they managed to make it to Manila with the remaining crew members. In Manila, she married Don Fernando de Castro, cousin of the governor of the Philippines. After making financial recoveries, she and her new husband organised a commercial expedition to China. This expedition proved to be a great success and they ‘returned to Nueva España in his ship, the “San Geronymo”, in the year ninety-six.’"

Isabel Barreto finally left us a will that was made up in Peru in the silver-mining city of Castrovirreyna (a present-day province of Peru) around September 1612, in which her new husband is also mentioned. In her will, she declares herself as the legal daughter of Nuño Rodriguez Barreto y de Doña Mariana de Castro and a resident of ‘la ciudad de Los Reyes’, that is, Lima. From this, we know that a great quantity of valuable Chinese and Asian goods was in her possession, for example, fabrics, broches and jewellery (rubi), a large house full of velvet that alone could be sold for 7,000 pesos (de a ocho reales) in Acapulco, four ‘petacas de tesillas’ from Japan, that are a kind of coffers or chests made of leather, furs, felts or of wood covered with furs, that were used to carry one’s belongings and other valuables and textiles used for Chinese clothes. She disputed the right to be considered discoverer of the Solomon Islands, and discussion is still ongoing whether she was buried in Castrovirreyna or in Spain in 1612, although the will seems to prove that she was, in fact, buried in Castrovirreyna in Peru."

Happy belated birthday @thisbuildinghasfeelings! I'm so happy to share this fic as part of the Three Men and a Dog Series alongside @lemonlyman-dotcom's lovely Raspberry Candy Cane, Blue Tonuges in Summer Rain. I hope you like it as much as I like you! Which is a lot. 🩷

After Sam Campbell is hospitalized during a bust gone wrong, a guilt-filled Carlos eagerly agrees that he, TK and seven-year-old Jonah will look after the Campbells’ dog, Ruby. But when a thunderstorm scares Ruby and she runs away, Jonah goes after her – and suddenly TK and Carlos find themselves in a living nightmare where both dog and kid are missing.

“Hug me ‘till I pop,” Carlos whispers.

Jonah is instantly delighted to have been given a special task, and hugs Carlos with a small roar. Carlos pretends to struggle, rocking Jonah as if to fling him before whisper-shouting, “Ahhh….BOOM!”

It’s the least dramatic popping he’s ever done because they’re in public, but it’s enough to make Jonah giggle and snuggle him for real. Bringing his face out of Jonah’s silky hair, Carlos catches eyes with TK. TK is at the vending machine, buying Carlos a granola bar and Jonah some strawberry PopTarts for the ride home. The way TK returns Carlos’ gaze from across the room makes him feel like he could melt into the floor. It’s a look of longing, admiration, sorrow, desire, all in one. Nobody, Carlos thinks, can have a whole conversation through his eyes like TK Strand-Reyes can, and nobody except Carlos knows exactly what to say in response with his own.
