Belinda's plotline is kind of a horror story, which would be very interesting if that's what they'd been going for.

She's kidnapped by a creepy guy who wants to marry her, and she's rescued by another guy who also comes off as kinda creepy to her, and she doesn't trust him or want to be with him, but conveniently he can't take her home so she has to stay with him for a while. And she's forced to start trusting him as they go on various adventures together, but then she sees him casually torture a guy and she has a moment where she doubts him again, but she's able to sort of brush it aside, and she even tells him how amazing he is.

And then she gets stuck in another creepy man's conservative utopia, where she's a housewife married to the man she's travelling with and they have a daughter together. And deep down she knows there's something wrong with this, and she even has a moment where she has to scream because this isn't her life, but she forces herself to keep on believing in the fake world and her daughter, and even when she gets her memories back her daughter is still there and she feels compelled to protect her. She shuts herself in a box, knowing she might be trapped there for eternity, because what else can she do? This is her daughter, right?

And then the girl fades out of existence and she forgets her, but the man she travelled with can't bear to let the girl go, so he rewrites the universe to save her... and rewrites Belinda's whole life in the process. Suddenly she's always been a mother. This has always been her daughter. Once again, she's had a new life imposed on her by some creepy guy, and she doesn't even know it's happened. He doesn't tell her, he just says goodbye and leaves her with the child she never used to have.

Will she ever feel the wrongness of her new reality? Will she ever have a nagging feeling that this isn't her life?

#I can see how this would've worked a lot better with Ruby in Belinda's place (as was presumably the original plan)#because Ruby's story was all about adoption and foundlings and I can absolutely see her immediately latching on to Poppy #even once she realises she's not 'real'#and being willing to do anything to protect her #that makes sense for Ruby's character and I don't think it would feel especially weird for her to end up raising Poppy with her mom & gran #whereas it comes off as much creepier with Belinda #and I don't think saving Poppy was a bad thing!#I know a lot of fans are like 'why are we even supposed to care about this random kid'#but I have a huge soft spot for children so the Doctor-Poppy stuff 100% worked for me #but the way it intersects with Belinda's storyline is really Weird #Ranger shut up about Doctor Who #DW spoilers

#dwedit #doctor who #mrs flood #fifteenth doctor #the master #jacobi!master #tenth doctor #jack harkness #martha jones #twelfth doctor #ninth doctor #*#okay here is my argument: mrs flood IS a time lord but her presence here has nothing to do with the doctor #instead she's here because of ruby. she's seemingly part of/related to the pantheon of discord & we know that ruby is connected to them too #so i think that she was deliberately placed as ruby's neighbor by the pantheon/oldest one/ruby's mom/? in order to watch over her #it also explains why she was there to check on ruby in 1.04. once she realizes she's on the phone w carla she says 'nothing to do with me'#and she leaves. which implies that it COULD have had something to do with her. if it had been something else going on #ANYWAY. to get to the time lordness of it all. rn i personally believe that she's a time lord that's been hiding on earth for 50+ years #bc i don't think she recognized the police box as a tardis initially. that first quote should be taken at face value.#instead picture this: she's watching over ruby as per usual. a police box is there - weird but nbd. then it dematerializes in front of her.#she drops her groceries. she's shocked. she kinda looks scared. if she already knew it was a tardis why would she react like that?#so imo she knows OF tardises. she DIDN'T know the police box was one. and she's worried the time lords have found her hence the fear.#but when nothing happens and nobody comes at her she realizes she's still safe #later when she sees the doctor she realizes the tardis is his/he must be a time lord. he doesn't identify her but that's happened before #so then when she asks him who he is i think what she's actually asking for is his title. WHICH time lord are you.#bc lbr if she knows abt tardises then she knows about time lords and if she knows abt time lords she knows what it means for ruby #to be joining him - and that's why she wishes ruby good luck. meanwhile this is clearly the outcome she WANTS (them to be together)#bc she gets visibly upset when the doctor seems to decide to leave without ruby.#and for once i'm not master clowning bc the list of names the doctor gives out is VERY interesting. some of them we've never heard before:#the bishop; the conquistador; later he adds the pedant and sagi-shi and reiterates the bishop AGAIN. so i wonder if she's the bishop.....

i wanted to explain myself to myself in an understandable way. i gave shape to my fears and made excuses. i varied my velocities, watched myselves sleep. something's not right about what i'm doing but i'm still doing it — living in the worst parts, ruining myself.

So thinking about the issue of this episode being an excellent takedown of alt right conspiracy theorists but also acting like UNIT isn’t a shady government organization. What if we kept the scale focused on Ruby.

We keep Conrad being a conspiracy theorist, we keep him dating/tricking Ruby, but instead of all of UNIT showing up maybe she goes ahead and attacks one of Conrad’s friends in the suits. Suddenly they’re revealed to be human, he accuses her of hurting them “just to keep up her lies for the government.” He doxxes her, people follow her around same as we see before. It comes off slightly less as “I’m seriously interested in taking down a corrupt government organization” and more “I’m ruining this young woman’s life because she’s an easy target and I don’t believe her when she says she’s been attacked.” She talks about basically having PTSD, and I think this could map pretty well onto these types of conspiracy theorists attacking people who have already survived horrible things. Idk if it would’ve worked, but it’s been stuck in my brain.
