Apparently there's discourse about whether or not Jon would be content being a spouse's consort or otherwise not ruling and it blows my mind how people can't process that thoughts and desires don't equal actions. Just because Jon desires to prove himself, that he's ambitious, that he's dreamt about ruling since he was a child...that doesn't mean he wouldn't accept anything else. He would have been content living at Winterfell under Robb's rule, for example.

He also very clearly has more hangups around not being seen as a usurper than he does ambition to rule, or he would have actually taken Stannis' offer, not just wanted to take it.

And if he finds out he's a Targaryen bastard, he's almost certainly NOT going to want to be king because he spent his life being compared specifically to Daemon Blackfyre. Even if he was the only one of Targaryen blood left, his early childhood trauma might be too great.

Also the whole getting murdered for his decisions as a "ruler" could, you know, change how a dude feels about being the one in power who gets all the blame lol

There's also a really skewed seeming view of consorts in the fandom, for that matter. He'd at the very least be in charge of household matters, which if we're talking somewhere like the Red Keep is a pretty big deal, and he'd have power over basically everyone but the Queen and Hand. And, of course, because of Westerosi misogyny, people would probably still act like he's the "real" ruler or defer to him on subjects like war and other "manly" pursuits.

On the topic of ‘bad mascot horror video games for kids’ the exception to the rule (or rather, something that understood the assignment) would be My Friendly Neighborhood.

I don’t want to spoil anything if you haven’t booted up the game before, but just…don’t be fooled by jumpscare compilations or the character design. From the opening cutscene this game grabs you by the fucking throat. The mechanics have thought put into them, the voice acting is top notch, and christ the fucking story - a complete story, one that has an end that isn’t promised in future ‘chapters’ or left ambiguous.

Yes, it has jumpscares from goofy muppet monsters, but they’re not cheap tricks. Once you learn how the game works they’re easy to avoid or at the very least anticipate - not to mention they’re survivable with the healing mechanic. And just when you think the scares are done, when you’re well into the game and have all the tools you need to navigate around potential jumpscares, the final act dunks you into the deep-end with the actual horror and nightmare fuel puppets.

I’m not sure how much the game as a whole qualifies as ‘horror,’ but it’s certainly being lumped in with the Whatever-Mascot Horror Game of the Week genre. Which is a shame because My Friendly Neighborhood is leagues ahead of those other games. It has more in common with survival horror than it does with mascot horror in terms of gameplay and tropes. It’s literally just the ‘monster’ designs leading people to assume its another Poppy Playtime clone complete with half baked story and repetitive, unimaginative gameplay loops. And that’s so far from the truth -

I'm so emotional about how Niko reacted to Charles forbidding them to come with him to hell

Because like... well, Crystal goes and actively seeks out her asshole ex who she only just got out of her head. Which says so much about how kind and caring and brave she is at heart and I love her for it but it doesn't ultimately end up being all that helpful to the situation at hand.

But Niko... it seems like Niko just passively accepts it. She knows she can't help with literal actual hell so she just stays behind and waits. And no one questions that. Everyone has always respected her ability to tap out of the scary adventures and that's lovely and if that was it that would be perfectly fine storytelling.

But it gets better. When Edwin and Charles return, we realize that she hasn't just been sitting and waiting. She realized that she couldn't help with Hell, so she looked ahead to what the next obstacle would be for her friends, and she looked at the Night Nurse and she realized there was a way she could help. So she sat with this woman who wanted to take away her friends and she played the fool and asked questions and convinced the night nurse to let her see the rules and regulations just to stop her chattering - knowing that if she could just find a loophole, she could buy them some time. So she dove into this book of regulations, and she found a loophole. She probably found a few, just in case the first didn't work.

And no one - not even the audience - realizes what she's done until it's done. It's brilliant and she makes it look easy. It's something only she can do, and it works with Charles' plan, even if he isn't trying to work with her.

Edwin might be book smart but Niko is the one who is willing to ask questions and listen to the answers. And the information she finds this way is always so critical.

I love her so much.
