On and in defense of Commander Fox and the Corries, and why I think they were set up to fail
Summary at the bottom because I like to go on.
Things we know for sure about clones and Fox and the Corries in the strictest canon sense (which ain't a lot):
1. They are stationed on Coruscant.
That is definitional, now remember what Coruscant is.
2. They have no Jedi in charge of the Guard, they report directly to Palpatine.
Although I adore the fanon that Quinlan Vos is their Jedi, it’s not canon.
3. Clones love their brothers dearly.
That is almost without exception, even the clones we see acting against the Republic (hi Slick) at least believe they were acting in their brother’s interests.
4. They seem to accrue extra responsibilities as the war goes on, up to the point of being the ones we see Palpatine with in ROTS.
Even if they don’t, the idea of a law enforcement/military unit answerable only to Palpatine is a shit idea. There’s reasons people worry about accountability in real life, and sneaky little shits who act all nice and innocent at first but eventually show their true colors once they have power in the bag is one of them.
These are all very obvious.
In very short terms, it's very likely Palpatine uses the Coruscant Guard to sow public dissatisfaction.
And all those that hate Fox fall for it by proxy, because I think you're essentially seeing of him (and the Guard, and by extension the clones) what Palpatine wants the public to see and think of clones.
The Coruscant Guard are probably the most consistently accessible and visible of the clones in the galaxy to its biggest cultural and political hub. Most of the time the 501st or 212th or any other seems to drop in, fights a battle, and apparently fucks off afterwards? Obviously, planets like Ryloth have a stronger personal connection--some GAR contingent seem to have been there practically the whole damn war and Howzer was obviously very familiar with the Syndullas, and they with him (and look how personable Howzer is, and how quickly and somehow easily he extricates himself from the rationale clones held about their orders; maybe it makes sense to think of it like how leaving your little hometown where everybody thinks the same affects a person)--but otherwise I feel like the clones, to the rest of the galaxy, are (expensive) theoretical constructs.
The vast majority of the public aren't likely to have any personal experience with a clone, let alone a develop personal rapport with one, unless they happen to go to specific places like 79s where they can be found, and that still doesn't necessarily lend itself to extended relationships since most of the clone patrons would only be on Coruscant temporarily. Some fics portray clones as being refused entrance to establishments (especially later in the war when people were protesting clones themselves) or restricted in where they can go (like grocery stores, etc.). I think that's plausible, even realistic--but it doesn't seem to be a focus of canon aside from showing some protests so I'll let it alone.
What we know of that IS canon is that clones aren't allowed to even think about having families or doing anything with their lives besides being soldiers (even though all of them have thought about it, even just secretly; I'd wager that all of them have secret dreams they don't share); it's against regulations as we see with Cut Lawquane in season one of TCW. So to effect this, clones are probably actively or passively discouraged from forming close friendly relationships with anyone who isn't a clone and who they have no reason to be speaking with—aka most people besides Jedi (and if the fanon can be believed, if decommissioning/euthanization is a concern, they would have the motivation to avoid even the perception of such a relationship). Obviously there are going to be exceptions, but you can scrutinize a stable population a lot better than an itinerant one.
The point is, if your only tangible frame of reference is a rigid hall monitor that doesn't demonstrate much of a personality (even though clones have real, complex personal lives beneath that surface) and is behind a faceless mask--and we see so little of the Guard that what exists of their personalities is, let's be real, nearly all fanon--then you never really have a chance to acquire a sense of their humanity, and a strict enforcement of regulations tends to breed resentment in a population for whom strict adherence to regulations isn’t normalized. There will be cultural differences in play.
This is not the clones' fault, they neither asked to be created nor put into this position, they’re only doing what they’ve been asked to do, but it plays directly into Palpatine's goals.
Moving on.
Sure, the Guard answers to Palpatine in the chain of command, and we see them actively serving him in ROTS, but Palpatine definitely isn't doing shit for fuck for the Guard's administration in a daily sense, so Fox basically runs that whole bitch by himself in every practical sense--a clone, with no rights of his own, considered property, in a situation increasingly hostile to him and his.
Now let's think about the clones we see: as far as we can tell, clones' social lives are largely insular. They mostly see and talk to each other, and that's not necessarily by nefarious design (as discussed above), that's just what happens (military people tend to hang out with other military people, that’s just how it is; you’ll spend most of your day around other military people, most likely stationed in a place you’re not so familiar with that it’s easy to do anything else). Remember: we as viewers get access and insight that people in-universe don't.
And, significantly:
The Corries do not have a Jedi. The Jedi see value in their lives beyond their merely being expendable, faceless, and unthinkingly obedient droids wearing flesh, this point was made multiple times--and the Jedi are able to walk the line between orders and the bigger picture, which rubs off on the men they lead. Go watch Nala Se’s (bitch can catch these hands) comments about the Jedi’s influence on the clones when she’s speaking to Dooku.
I can see leaving the Corries without a Jedi being another saccharine, oh-so-magnanimous moment from Palpatine (he has so many of these) in the vein of expressing confidence in the clones' capability and in being very undemanding of the Jedi, in order to “free up” Jedi (whom he so totally trusts) to fight the war…but in effect leaving the Guard without anyone familiar with Coruscant and equipped to play referee with the environment and peoples they're bound to serve, and with no one batting in their corner or showing them any other way to exist and think.
On a side note:
Fox is an interesting clone commander anyway, not least because he doesn't have a Jedi to bounce off of. In a sense, whether or not Fox had his chip activated, we’re probably seeing how a clone commander was originally going to behave on their own initiative: see problem, address problem, think no more deeply than that. The Kaminoans did not want creative thinking in the clones. The clones were trained to fight the enemy they’re pointed at with singleminded intent, it stands to reason that that straightforward directness would transfer to other instances which might have been more kindly served by a different mindset. Their mindset isn’t even like a real life military where you’re still obligated to think about the nature of what you’re ordered to do—just following orders hasn’t been a valid defense since 1945.
TBH I've got a lot to say about fandom, the fetishization of actual violence through the lionization of fictional violence (although I don't think that fictional violence breeds actual violence; rather, I think people who were already interested in it go looking for things they think reflect their beliefs), and why we even have war crimes as a concept (and the absolute ignorance perpetrated by an increasingly illiterate populace), but...
I digress.
You cannot claim to have sympathy for clones without acknowledging their humanity and that includes for the ones who didn’t have the chance to grow beyond the limitations built around them. It was awful that Fox killed Fives, but it’s a tragedy like so much else in this franchise, not proof that Fox is awful. Part of the horror of what we see everyone go through in clone wars is how many times Palpatine’s plans almost derail but it never happens.
If your complaint is that Fox didn’t think any more deeply than what was right in front of him in the moment, remember that that’s exactly what’s been expected of Fox and all other clones: obey orders, and it’s not their role to determine what those orders are. Abstractions are for those who are not expendable, made to die. Orders are orders, and good soldiers do what again? He quite literally all but says “my opinion doesn’t matter” when he tells Ahsoka that he doesn’t blame her for (apparently) killing Letta, but she’s under arrest anyway.
Fox is put in a position of having to wield authority in a very different way than any other clone commander, has no direct support from or evident collaboration with the one group of people who generally see clones as living beings worthy of compassion, and deals with the public while having been trained to lead a war campaign. His is a war of attrition, not dropping in on a planet and fighting a battle, and he’s responsible specifically to Palpatine, who is literally the big bad. Fanon tends to think that Palpatine either activated his chip early or tortured him; honestly either one tracks, it's Palpatine after all--and in two major instances, we don't see what Palpatine says, to Fives or to Fox--but the fucker is a masterful manipulator so anything and everything is still on the table.
But in the midst of all this, because clones aren’t unthinking or unfeeling, and the dissonance is tragic but not absent:
Clones do give a shit about their brothers. Fox is no exception; he's audibly upset when he asserts that Ahsoka killed three troopers. And the immediate order to shoot to kill is pragmatic--he only issues it after he believes she was willing to kill clones to escape. That’s a fair order; if she’s willing to kill clones as he believes she did, then his men should at least be able to defend themselves as well as they can. See issue, address issue.
I mean. Shit, he doesn’t stick around after he shot Fives; we see his face once and that is not a triumphant posture. If he wanted to gloat or be an asshole about it he had the chance. Rex probably would've gone for the throat, but he had the chance.
The way he dies also suggests this. He could have thrown somebody else under the bus--called the men who fired on Vader defective, shifted blame somewhere else, somehow. He did not. There was one thing Fox ever had control over in his life, and that was how much he let anyone else take the fall. Hell, his answer wasn't even that bad, but Anakin (who is on my permanent shit list for not putting two and two together from the Sifo-Dyas reveal and what Fives told him earlier) probably did have it out for him, because Vader is an asshole. He's a Sith, it comes with the territory.
So, to summarize:
Clones are trained from decanting to do as they're told regardless of their personal feelings, and Fox in nearly so many words states that he acts regardless of his personal feelings. He is not likely to be in a position where he's shown a different way to behave, or interact with anyone that does anything but reinforce that expectation.
(Side note, I feel like Palpatine would have a great time tormenting Fox by sending him off to do shit he personally disagrees with but is technically correct according to the letter of the law..................)
Fox essentially is on his own in an environment unlike what most clone commanders deal with that he probably wasn't trained to understand much of (cultural understanding is important); it's rather likely the Guard hews very close to their training because of that. They'll stick to what's familiar and what's expected of them as they understand it. That is a very normal human response.
Leaving the Corries without a Jedi means that, as well as lacking anyone who sees them as individuals worth more the money it cost to make them and who treats them as such, they lack a go-between and likely familiarity with the population they're policing but are subordinate to, legally speaking, as clones are seen as government property, not people. This is going to breed resentment; somebody is going to bitch that no clone has the right to do bla bla bla.
The vast majority of the galaxy is going to take cues from Coruscant whether they like admitting it or not. If Coruscant has a bad impression of clones, then the vast majority of the galaxy—for whom the clones are (expensive) theoretical constructs—will have a bad impression of clones. Clones may not be in a position to pursue close relationships with someone not in their near orbit, and may be likely to actually avoid them because of regulations.
The vast majority of the galaxy would likely see them as unthinking, rigid hall monitors (whereas non-clone troopers, stormtroopers, think for ourselves and we wouldn’t act that way..........).
Which all gives Palpatine an excuse to give in soooo magnanimously to the public's demands to stop using clones as troops.

Hey, people who know Star Wars lore! I need to read up on Twi'leks and Ryloth for a fic I'm writing. I checked the sources section on their Wookieepedia pages and put together a list of the books named there. Anything that's missing, or anything here that doesn't actually mention much about them? Is Ryloth based on Algeria?
A while back, some friends and I had an interesting discussion about why Star Wars has the Twi'lek speak with French accent, and the implication that Ryloth could perhaps be inspired by a country formerly colonized by France.
We discovered there were A LOT of parallels between Ryloth and the country of Algeria
Political History & Colonialism
Algeria became a colony of France after they invaded it in 1830. Their conquest of Algeria has been called a genocide, and they perpetrated countless atrocities- starvation, epidemics, retaliation for resistance, etc. During that time period, there were popular revolts against the French occupation, and insurgent groups, guerilla warfare, etc., particularly in the decade prior to their independence, which Algerians finally won in 1962.
Ryloth's rulers/most powerful political official(s) are always shown as off-world, corrupt, disconnected from the life and struggles of its people, and allowing the people and resources of the planet to exploited. First, this is under Senator Orn Free Taa, then Separatist occupation, then the Empire.
Throughout that same history of oppression and exploitation, we also see armed resistance movements and guerilla fighters, like the Twi'lek Resistance and the Free Ryloth Movement.

Geography
Algeria is the largest country in Africa. It contains a significant portion of the Sahara Desert, and hosts many impressive rock formations.
Ryloth is a large planet on the Outer Rim. Whenever we see Ryloth on-screen, it almost always shows the desert, is peppered with incredible rock formations, gorges, etc.

Architecture
The homes and structures we see on Ryloth are reminiscent of traditional &/or vernacular mud-brick architecture in Algeria and its neighbor, Morocco. For example:
The Syndulla House

Numa's Village (from The Clone Wars S1E20)

The Capital City (from The Clone Wars S1E21)

Interior Design
We also see themes and details that are strongly reminiscent of Islamic architecture in, for example, the design of the Syndulla family's home.

This is also true of simpler homes, like the ones in Numa's village from The Clone Wars, which utilize subtle geometric motifs and Arabesque patterned windows.
Art
Mosaic art was one of the hallmarks of Roman and Byzantine and Islamic Empires, all of which Algeria was part of, and had their history and culture influenced by.
The Syndulla family portrait is a mosaic.
Head Coverings
The vast majority of Algerians identify as Muslim. It's very common practice for Muslim women to wear the hijab, which covers their hair.
Every time we see a female Twi'lek on-screen she is wearing a head-band or head-covering. We very rarely see male Twi'lek do so.
Language and Accents
As a remnant of the legacy of French colonialism, French is widely spoken and understood in Algeria, though its official language is Arabic.
Many Twi'lek speak Galactic Basic, and do so with a French-sounding accent, though Twi'leki is their native language.
Anything else?
#sources are basically just Wookiepedia and Wikipedia and my useless college degree lol#i did my best but i'm no expert so please correct me if my terminology etc is wrong!#star wars#twi'lek#ryloth#star wars meta#sw meta#sw numa#hera syndulla#star wars rebels#the clone wars#sw rebels#mine#it's not a PERFECT parallel but it's still pretty close as these things go

ATLAS OF THE GFFA ⇛ RYLOTH
↳ [Ryloth System; Gaulus Sector; the Outer Rim]
Ryloth was the harsh, rocky planet located on the Corellian Run in the Outer Rim Territories. One side of the planet perpetually faced its sun and the other remained in darkness, a phenomenon known as tidal locking. The native twi'leks inhabited a thin border along the terminator of the planet, where they built their cavern cities, which protected them from violent heat storms, and various predators. Ryloth was the homeworld of many famous twi'leks, such as Jedi Knight Aayla Secura, who served the Republic during the Clone Wars, and Jedi Master Shado Vao, former padawan of the New Jedi Order's Grandmaster Kol Skywalker.

Let's Talk About Twi'leks...
PLEAS KEEP IN MIND ALL INFORMATION REFERECED COMES FROM MY MEMORY OF THE MOVIES(WHICH COULD BE WRONG) OR FROM THE EASILY AVAILABLE INFORMATION ONLINE.
Now, the twi'leks could be amazing. Here is the blurb given on the most popular fan wiki:
"Twi'leks, sometimes referred to xenophobically as Tail-Heads or Twi's, occasionally referred to as Rylothians, were a tall near-human species whose most striking feature was a pair of long appendages protruding from their skulls, called lekku. They hailed from the planet of Ryloth, in the Outer Rim Territories, and female Twi'leks were often exported offworld as slaves. Twi'leks were considered one of the most common species in the galaxy, with its members easily able to blend into a crowd without drawing attention, as opposed to rarer, more prominent species, like Togrutas. Some armies used this to their advantage, employing Twi'leks as undercover agents." *
I have some issues here. First of all, the name for the species is Twi'lek. Talk about an obvious piece of naming that came from humans/near-humans. "TWO LEK"? Crazy. "Rylothians" is better, but at this point, I think people from Ryloth proper are more rare than the species that lives across the galaxy.
(Let's not even think about addressing the easy inclusion of racist names in the fandom wiki)
As someone who takes great pride in the development of worlds, including languages and cultures, the way this species is presented rubs me the wrong way.
So I have decided to fix it. My grubby little conlanger hands are getting all over it (with input from @adragonsfriend (who I tried to type as KRAYTTAHREI AGAIN), @yellow-faerie (the Partner in Crime for this conlang), and @anabenalia (the long suffering linquist who puts up with my endless questions).
Enjoy the basic world building and conlanging I have begun to do.
Step one: What does Ryloth mean?
I decided that Ryloth was going to mean "Our Place", thus when asked by people who made contact what their planet was called, they said something like "Ry loth" and the people took it to mean the name. It is forgotten (right now) if there WAS another name, but for current scholars on Ryloth and of Ryloth-based histories and texts, the planet where the species originated from is called "Ryloth".
Step Two: Who are the people of Ryloth?
The people of Ryloth. In the case of this, I did not want to call them by "Rylothians" because that's the boring way of naming them, (lol). I chose, instead to incorporate the first bit of culture:
The species native to Ryloth is very insular- in the language itself, they have clusivity markers/clauses to denote people who are part of the community vs outside of the community. (According to Mark Rosenfelder, this can be called the inclusive we vs exclusive we)**
So, the species that originates from Ryloth is called different things!
Ryhasi - One of the People, and this refers to someone specifically from Ryloth
Ryha- People/Us, a "twi'lek". This is non-specific. (Any time I refer to "Twi'leks" in this post, they will be called Ryha/Ryhasi, depending on the context.
Personally, I believe some of the people who learn to speak Ryl (more on the etymology of this word later) definitely mistranslated Ryha as "Person", but that's incorrect! Ryl has different words for a sentient vs a person.
Hybrids of Ryha are called Ryk'e which translates as "person-no"
Any other sentient being is called K'ery , AKA Not Person, or Non-Ryha.
Step 3: Ryl, and the meaning
Ryl is the word for the langauge the Ryha. In my tiny current dictionary, this is the definition: "
"Ours", used to declare that the words cannot be claimed by anyone but twi'leks. This is a very old possessive pronoun, no longer used for everyday things."
So, some Ryha, usually Ryhasi don't like other people to speak the language of Ryl. (This is pulled from real life experience.)
Most Ryha do not mind others speaking the language, but prefer for Ryha to teach the course.
Step 4: Ryl, and beginning to build the language
Okay. This is the meat and bones here. Building the language allows me to build the culture, because culture speaks (HA, a pun!) through the language it uses. Think like southern american english. It sounds very different, and has a different stereotype to northern or midwestern american english. This is partially environment, SAE tends to have longer drawn out sounds- this is from heat (I think. I don't remember exactly where I learned this, feel free to call me out if I'm wrong).
So, Environment, biology, and culture. Lets start with Environment:
The environment on Ryloth is mostly desert/mesas/vocalnos with a band of green forests/rainforests(?) around the equator***. That means its going to be hot, and personally, I am going vowel heavy, because thats how my brain works.
Deserts mean many flying particles, so that leads to biology. I decided to fiddle with the biology of Ryha. The nose has a specific filter used for breathing. The channel is actually entirely separate from the main esophagus, with an organ forming the meeting point for both. That organ has fibrous walls that allow air but not liquids or solids, to pass the walls into the channels that lead to the lungs, which have a greater capacity for holding air, with small sacs that allow easy adaption to higher altitudes. Long story short, the air breathed in a Ryha's nose cannot be used for speaking, meaning there is no nasals or nasalization of other sounds.
(Sorry, canon Numa. Your name is Lurerra now, if I remember Numa meaning sister to be correct.)
I also kinda disliked the french-ification of them in Clone Wars? I thought it was a little fetishizing to choose The Romance Language/"Language of Love" to represent a people who are actively enslaved for being beautiful, and compatible sexually with most species.
So that was my basic premise. I didn't have a lot to build from when I began, and there isn't a ton now, but I do have some things in my dictionary. The link is public, and should update automatically with new additions. I hope you enjoy!

Guess who’s back! Me!! Pine Tree!!! Happy here to introduce to you two more of Hira’s kids!
Everyone, meet Jax and Toli :D
Jax (11) is the oldest of the kids in the camp and the little Toli (5) is the youngest. There is more to them but I don’t want to spoil to much xDP
close ups and more under the cut
What I love about the Twi’lek species is that you can basically give them any color and markings on their skin, giving everyone unique features and making them special in their own way! :D
My Jax is inspired by Jax from The Amazing Digital Circus, so those who know that show might have a vague idea on how his character will be in my story xD
Tho in my book every one has a soft spot, and Toli becomes Jax soft spot and they quickly form a strong bond. :D
(Also a little side note in case some of you misinterpret me, all those kids are not Hira’s biological kids, he just sorta adopts them without adopting them, he loves kids and acts like a dad when he’s around them. I call them his kids because they technically are xD)

Folks 🫶 You drive me crazy in the best way, I can‘t believe it but…
200 FOLLOWER Celebration 🎉
Whattttt!? 🤩 Where do you beautiful people suddenly come from? You amazing crowd, we‘re a more than a clone trooper COMPANY now! Do I need to design armor for us now? I may do this, beware! 🤩
Now prepare for an appreciation post full of buzzing light flash!
I‘m a fuzzy floof ball again! 🦉 Chirping, fluting and hooting in my caf corner! I blissfully crosshatched myself through this artwork for you and now I‘m drunken from dopamining ✨ I‘m sending out big Wrecker hugs to thank youuuu 🫶♥️
All started on 3rd September 2024 with a timidly frist drawing of this underrated gorgeous clone – Captain Keeli! I thought myself, for this one there’s too few fan art, but why? He is a hero and the most stylish clone and I still headcanon, that he shove the creative pattern on his head himself without a plan, just going how it feels good, because he would make art in his few free time. I mean – look at his armor!
And today I mark this date red in my calendar, because I’d never imagine how I‘d be able to improve my skills from there until today and additionally receiving so much support and love here on Tumblr ♥️🫣✨
For this occasion I made my very first Jedi artwork ever to your honor! 🏅It’s Captain Keeli’s General Ima-Gun Di and I needed to show you this badass scene of these two heroes!
Have a closer look for the intensity:

I'm not sure how correct those lighting shadows are, but I love Keeli's cheekbone 🙈

“Painted in Dust”
Waxer x Twi’lek!Reader (Numa’s older sister)
Warnings: death, mentions of death
⸻
You never forgot the sound of blaster fire echoing through empty streets.
Even with the sun climbing high above Nabat’s fractured skyline, even with the Separatists driven out and your people reclaiming their homes, the war still sat heavy on your chest.
The battle was over.
But it didn’t feel over.
You moved through the dusty ruins of your home, running your fingers along the cracked walls and scorched doorframe, unsure what to hold onto. So much was gone. So much had been taken.
“Hey,” a low voice said behind you.
You turned—and froze.
It was him.
Waxer.
Helmet under one arm, bald head beaded with sweat, armor smudged with chalk and soot. Beside him stood another trooper—Boil, if you remembered right. He had his arms crossed, smirking in that way men do when they know something they’re not saying.
But you didn’t look at Boil.
Your eyes went to Waxer.
And to your little sister—Numa—curled up in his arms, her head against his shoulder.
“Sorry to barge in,” Waxer said quietly. “She wouldn’t let go.”
“I can see that,” you breathed, stepping forward.
Numa’s head popped up at your voice. “Sister!”
You caught her as she wriggled out of Waxer’s arms and ran to you. She threw herself at your legs, and you dropped to your knees to scoop her into your chest, pressing kisses to the top of her dusty head.
Tears burned your eyes.
“I thought I lost you,” you whispered into her hair.
“She hid,” Waxer said. “Smart girl. We found her in a supply closet.”
Boil added, “She gave us more intel than half the generals on this rock.”
Numa giggled, her tiny hand reaching back toward Waxer.
“I was brave,” she said proudly.
You looked up at him. “She wouldn’t have made it without you.”
Waxer rubbed the back of his neck, a little awkward. “She kept us going.”
Boil let out a chuckle and nudged his brother-in-arms. “You’re lucky she didn’t draw all over your head too, shiny.”
“I’m not shiny,” Waxer muttered without heat. “And I like the drawings.”
You noticed the chalk on his armor now—Numa’s doing. Little stars and hearts and lopsided flowers smeared over white plastoid. One even looked like you.
“She drew me?” you asked softly.
Waxer nodded. “She said you always looked after her. She wanted to return the favor.”
Your heart cracked in half.
“Stay,” you said, almost without meaning to. “Just for a little while. Please.”
⸻
They stayed.
Boil found an intact kettle and tried to boil water over an open flame, grumbling about “primitive” cooking while Numa climbed over his lap and demanded a story. He caved within minutes.
Waxer sat beside you on the remains of a stone bench in the courtyard. The village was quiet now—calm. Your people were rebuilding. But in this moment, it was just the two of you.
“Does it always feel like this after a mission?” you asked.
“Sometimes,” he said. “Sometimes worse.”
You watched him for a moment. The slope of his jaw. The cut near his brow. The dark stubble shadowing his skull. He looked young. Too young to have seen so much death.
“You don’t look like a soldier,” you said.
He raised a brow. “I’m wearing full armor.”
“I know,” you said. “But when you’re with her… with Numa… you don’t look like a soldier. You look like a person.”
He blinked slowly. “That’s rare.”
You reached over, fingers brushing his hand. He didn’t flinch.
“She sees you as family,” you murmured. “And she’s usually right about people.”
Waxer swallowed.
“I shouldn’t… I shouldn’t get attached.”
“But you did.”
He didn’t answer.
You turned your hand so your fingers laced with his. “So did I.”
His eyes flicked to your face—wary, stunned, searching.
“I don’t know what happens next,” you said. “But I know what’s happening now.”
You leaned in, and with the softest of brushes, pressed your lips to his cheek—just below the scar.
Waxer sat very, very still.
Boil, across the courtyard, snorted. “About time.”
“Shut up,” Waxer muttered, but he didn’t pull away.
⸻
The next morning, they were set to leave.
Gunships loomed at the edge of the village, ready to extract the 212th.
Boil crouched in front of Numa, letting her tie a flower to his pauldron while Waxer stood beside you, helmet tucked under his arm.
He didn’t speak for a long moment. Then, he said quietly:
“I don’t want to go.”
“Then don’t,” you said, teasing, even as your chest ached. “Desert. Live on Ryloth. I’ll make you dinner.”
He gave a soft, breathy laugh. “Tempting.”
You reached up, cupped his cheek.
“Promise me something,” you said.
He nodded.
“Come back. One day. When the war’s over. Find us.”
His lips pressed into a line. “I’ll try.”
You stared at him. “I want more than try, Waxer.”
He leaned forward, rested his forehead against yours.
“I’ll find my way home,” he whispered.
You let him go.
But your heart didn’t
⸻
The war kept him away—but never silent.
Even when systems burned and the front lines shifted faster than you could chart, Waxer always found time. A few spare minutes between missions, a cracked hologram on a beaten-up transmitter, or the low, static-drenched voice in your ear late at night.
He always reached out.
“Hey, starshine.”
It was your nickname. A joke from the first message, because you said his armor caught the light like a second sun.
You saved every one of his transmissions.
He’d tell you about whatever hellscape he and Boil were deployed on, never in detail, never the real horror of it—but enough to let you know he was alive. You’d tell him about Numa, about how she was growing taller, sassier, stronger. Sometimes she’d grab the comm and yell, “WAXER!!” until he laughed so hard he had to mute his mic.
Sometimes, when he was safe and still and alone, he’d whisper:
“I miss you.”
You always whispered it back.
⸻
Just before Umbara, the transmission came through. Crystal clear.
He was grinning, helmet in hand, dust and soot smudging his cheeks, but his eyes—his eyes held that quiet warmth you’d grown to crave.
“Got something to show you,” he said.
He turned the helmet in his hands. Painted on the side—Numa’s smiling face.
It was rough. A little lopsided. But it was her.
“Maker,” you whispered. “She’s going to lose it.”
“She better,” he said, laughing. “She helped.”
“Boil let you do this?”
“He said it was dumb.” Waxer smirked. “Then asked if I’d paint him next.”
You laughed. You hadn’t laughed that hard in weeks.
He looked away for a second, rubbed the back of his neck. “Hey… when this mission’s done, I’ve got leave. Cody already signed off.”
You blinked. “You’re serious?”
“I’ll be there. You and Numa better be ready. I’m thinking a quiet week. No comms. Just us.”
Your voice caught in your throat. “We’ve been waiting for that since Ryloth.”
“Then I won’t make you wait any longer than I have to,” he said. “Soon, okay?”
“Soon.”
⸻
But soon never came.
⸻
Boil arrived with the 212th’s relief team. Numa ran to him before you saw the look in his eyes. That raw, hollow expression.
He didn’t say anything. Just knelt down and pulled her into a tight embrace. She kept asking where Waxer was. Kept asking why he wasn’t with him.
You stood there. Frozen. Staring.
Boil approached slowly, helmet tucked under one arm. Your heart pounded.
“Where is he?” you asked, already knowing. “He said he was coming back.”
Boil shook his head.
“They were split up,” he said quietly. “He was in a different squad.… no backup.”
You couldn’t breathe.
“I didn’t see him go,” Boil admitted. “But I saw what was left.”
You pressed a hand over your mouth. “He promised—”
“I know,” Boil said, voice cracking. “He meant it.”
He held out Waxer’s helmet. The paint—Numa’s face—was still there. Smudged with ash. But smiling.
You collapsed to your knees. Held it like it was him. Like he might still be warm.
Numa clutched your arm, confused and quiet.
“Did he forget?” she whispered.
You shook your head. “No, little one. He didn’t forget.”
Boil crouched beside you, gaze heavy with guilt. “He talked about you two all the time. You were his anchor. His light. We used to tease him, but… he loved you.”
You didn’t respond.
The helmet said enough.
⸻
You buried it beneath the tree outside your home. Numa placed a flower on top.
Every night after, you looked up at the stars and whispered:
“Just one more call. Just tell me you made it.”
But the silence said it all.

With the sheer number of Venator and Arquitens class cruisers lost under Anakin and Obi-Wan’s command, they’re both extremely fortunate that Padme didn’t serve on the Senate Budget Committee.
