I’m gonna circle back To The Rest of It in a different post but I think the key thing this episode is that Buck feels very strongly but gives Zero Thought to identifying his feelings.

We can trace this back to as early as season 1 when he’s using sex and calling it intimacy despite the fact that it clearly does Not Make Him Feel Good after the fact. His initial conflict with Eddie, the lawsuit, pretty much every near death experience him or Eddie have had, the entire T*mmy situation, and! Most potently! The way he’s been acting about Eddie leaving/being gone. Like yes, he’s upset and acting a little insane and he Knows his feelings are strong but he’s also putting Zero Effort into identifying those feelings.

This is all to say: Holy Mother of God, on a buddie front, just serves to emphasize that Eddie exists in a gray area for buck that no one else can occupy or has occupied so buck calls it Best Friendship in spite of all the suggestions that it’s More. Despite the fact that he’s not like that with anyone else in his life and, in fact, couldn’t shut up about Eddie long enough to make a new friend.

The crucial other side of this coin is that Eddie can and has identified his emotions but generally represses things before he can grasp the enormity of them (see: the lawsuit, his grief around Shannon, the tension with his parents (my family is not screwed up!), and, one could assume, how he feels about Buck/his sexuality). They exist as compliments to one another.

I was surprised by how much I love John Doggett but his unfortunate position as a hastily injected Mulder replacement means he gets a paranormal speedrun in season 8 like no other. Human sized bat creature, the physical manifestation of a ghost, a man turned machine. He's then shot dead, eaten entirely, digested, vomited up & reborn in a hole covered in goop, all while saying shit like 'dollars to doughnuts'.

C /o: people who say Buddie is impossible after Buck's line about not being in love with Eddie.

HAVE WE SEEN THE SAME SHOW?!?!

It strikes me as very weird and unrealistic that any watcher (and especially Buddie fans) would react in this way. I see exactly two possible explanations for this:

1. Low media-literacy

Taking a character's statement at face value without questioning it is very naive, especially in the context of admitting you're in love with your best friend. It disregards potential motives for lying or wanting to withhold information, the possibility that you are in denial or haven't figured it out. Negating something does not mean the topic is not intentionally highlighted. The screenwriters put it there for a reason and negations build tension while also preparing the audience, so an epiphany does not seem too sudden or random.

("Don't think of elephants" makes you think of elephants and "I'm not in love with Eddie" makes you think about Eddie and love)

2. Anxiety

If you feel like you have to obsessively collect and take into account everybody's opinion - that is anxiety talking - and it will make you crave reassurance even more (but it will never be enough for long). That being said, if you're anxiety-ridden, block the Bucktommy hashtag - your mental health will thank you. Forbidding yourself to have expectations and hope is a trauma response and reading weird Bucktommy takes is exactly what will feed the anxiety gremlin in your brain.
