GIS for Urban Safety with Interactive Crime Mapping
Tumblr media
Interactive, GIS-powered crime maps deliver essential spatial insights for bolstering urban safety. By displaying crime data in real life, these platforms enable law enforcement and city planners to pinpoint high-risk areas, anticipate emerging trends, and allocate resources more effectively—melding public records with advanced geospatial analysis.
Why Use GIS for Crime Prevention?
GIS streamlines crime analysis by overlaying incident reports with environmental, demographic, and infrastructure layers. Moreover, these scalable solutions support predictive policing, informed patrol deployment, and robust community outreach through location-based crime intelligence.
Uses of GIS in Urban Safety
Hotspot Detection – Reveal clusters of criminal activity, guiding officers to the areas that need attention most.
Predictive Policing – Identify patterns in past incidents to forecast where future offenses may occur.
Public Safety Planning – Inform neighborhood design by integrating crime data into urban development decisions.
Key Applications
Community Awareness: Offer citizens up-to-date crime information via interactive dashboards.
Patrol Optimization: Reconfigure patrol routes according to crime density and urgency metrics.
Traffic Incident Mapping: Enhance road safety by mapping collisions and traffic-related offenses.
Procedure for Crime Mapping with GIS
First, compile crime statistics and geo coordinates from authoritative sources by adding a boundary layer. Next, add CSV/Excel file containing city names and their latitude–longitude pairs. Then, create a “Crime Rate” attribute in the layer’s schema and input the corresponding values for each location. Afterward, switch to the style settings and enable the “Bubble Map” visualization. Adjust classification breaks for clarity and assign a bubble radius of 20 for optimal display. Using tools like MAPOG, merge administrative boundaries and fine-tune symbology for clear overlays. Finally, review the map, publish it to your GIS portal, and share the interactive link with stakeholders.
Tumblr media
Use Case: School Zone Safety and Youth Protection
GIS crime mapping is increasingly used to safeguard areas around schools by analyzing incidents involving theft, bullying, or drug-related activity near educational institutions. By combining spatial crime data with student commute routes, pedestrian crossings, and traffic flow, city officials can implement targeted interventions such as increased surveillance, better lighting, and adjusted traffic patterns. This application not only helps create safer school zones but also strengthens policies aimed at protecting young populations in vulnerable urban pockets.
Open-Source GIS Tools in Crime Analysis
Open-source platforms such as MAPOG enable municipalities to develop transparent, shareable crime maps. These tools enhance civic participation, facilitate data sharing, and improve real-life public safety coordination.
Conclusion
By harnessing interactive GIS mapping, cities can revolutionize crime prevention and response. With spatial data and dynamic visualizations, decision-makers gain the insight needed to deploy resources swiftly, engage communities effectively, and ultimately create safer, more resilient urban environments.

"These workers, who cannot even dream of ever building their own house in Delhi or Noida, come here leaving behind their dying agriculture and crafts. It is their labour that makes it possible for the residents of the city to experience safety in their homes, with home deliveries and travel. Ironically the same workers are left feeling not just unsafe and unwelcome but also as if they are the ones from whom the safety of the residents has to be ensured by making their spaces “gated”... ... the discourse of “safe cities” invisibilises the work that goes into making them safer, excludes those who put in this work and then goes ahead into turning them into convenient “others”.

New fic alert!! First time writing anything other than Halbarry lol.
Central City has been voted the safest city for the past three years. But it's not the statistically safest city. This paper analyzes why Central City ranked so high and proposes that superheroes increase city safety.
(aka a totally real paper published in a totally real journal about superheroes and city safety and why Central City is so awesome)
Shout-out to the best peer-reviewer @chocolateteapotsvis !!!!! This paper wouldn't be as good as it is without you!! Also special thanks to @roboticnebula and @briarmoon1015 for our discord chats that led to the creation of this paper. Without this, I wouldn't have gotten the grant from the Wayne-Queen Foundation to publish my research 🥰

How to Keep Your Info Safe When You Share Your Device
We all use phones, tablets, and computers every day. These devices help us with many things—talking to people, shopping, taking notes, or doing math. But sometimes, we share our devices with others. Maybe a friend wants to borrow your phone. Or maybe your child uses your tablet to play games. That’s okay. Sharing is part of life.
But here’s the thing: your device might have private stuff on it.
You may not think about it much, but your phone or laptop holds a lot of personal information. Things like:
Notes or passwords
Bank apps or wallet info
Photos and messages
Websites you visited
Numbers or lists you typed in
When someone else uses your device, they might see these things—by accident or on purpose. That’s why it’s smart to protect your privacy before you hand it over.
In this blog, we’ll talk about how to keep your personal stuff private when sharing your device. No tech skills needed. Just simple steps anyone can follow.
1. Close Your Apps and Tabs
Before someone else uses your device, look at what’s open. Are there any apps running? Are any websites still open?
Many people forget to close tabs or apps. But if they stay open, someone else can see what you were doing.
For example:
If your messages app is open, someone could read them.
If you were shopping, they could see your cart or saved info.
If you were looking at private notes, they could see them too.
What to do: Just swipe up and close apps. On most phones and computers, you can also close tabs in your browser (like Chrome or Safari) with a tap or click. It takes only a second, but it makes a big difference.
2. Use a Guest Account or Screen Lock
Some devices let you set up a guest account. This means someone can use the device without seeing your stuff. It’s like giving them a clean version of your phone or computer.
If that’s not an option, you can use screen lock or app lock. This stops people from opening certain apps or settings.
How to do it:
On Android, you can add a “Guest User” from the user settings.
On iPhones and iPads, you can use “Guided Access” to lock the screen to one app.
On computers, you can make a new user account just for guests.
This way, people can use your device, but they won’t get into your private world.
3. Clear Your History
Many apps and browsers save what you do. If you were online or typing something personal, your device might remember it.
Some things that get saved:
Search history
Web pages you opened
Auto-fill forms
Recent files or notes
If someone uses your device, they might see your past activity—even if you forgot about it.
Quick fix: Clear your history.
Most apps have a “Clear History” or “Delete Browsing Data” option in the settings. Use it before you hand your device over.
4. Don’t Save Private Notes in Easy-to-Find Places
It’s common to save things like:
Bank info
Passwords
Personal thoughts
Names and phone numbers
Budget notes or PIN codes
But where do you keep those? If they’re in a regular notes app, anyone who opens it can read them.
Instead, use:
A secure note app with a password
Or delete sensitive info when you don’t need it
Also, avoid writing down private numbers on paper or in open apps.
5. Use Private Tools That Don’t Track or Save
Here’s something many people don’t think about—even tools like calculators can store your input. Some websites or apps save what you type to “help improve their services.” That’s fine for some things, but not great if you’re doing sensitive math or budgeting.
Let’s say you’re figuring out a loan, a repayment, or a money split. You want that to stay private, right?
That’s why it’s better to use tools that don’t store or track anything.
One good example is SafeCalc. It’s a simple online calculator that does one thing: help you do math without saving anything.
No tracking
No sign-up
No history
When you close the tab, it forgets everything. That’s how it should be. If you need to do quick math before sharing your phone or computer, SafeCalc is a clean, safe choice. Just go to the website and use it. That’s it.
6. Log Out of Sensitive Apps
If you were using apps like:
Email
Banking
Shopping
Messaging
Be sure to log out before someone else uses your device. Some apps remember your login info and open right away. That’s handy—but only for you.
To stay safe:
Go into the app
Tap “Log Out” or “Sign Out”
Close the app afterward
Even better, use apps that offer face ID or fingerprint unlock, so only you can open them.
7. Hide Notifications
Sometimes private info pops up without warning—like message previews, calendar reminders, or payment alerts.
If someone is using your phone and a text shows up on the screen, they might see something you didn’t mean to share.
Here’s how to fix that:
On most phones, you can go to Settings > Notifications
Turn off “Show Preview”
Mute alerts while others are using your device
It’s a small change, but it helps protect your privacy big time.
8. After Sharing, Double-Check
Once you get your device back, take a minute to check it.
Were any new apps opened?
Did the person leave tabs open?
Was something changed in your settings?
Most people won’t mess with anything, but it’s always smart to take a quick look—just in case.
Final Thoughts
Sharing your device doesn’t have to mean giving away your privacy. A few small steps can help you keep your info safe, even when someone else is using your phone, tablet, or laptop.
To keep things private:
Close apps and tabs
Use guest mode or screen lock
Clear history
Log out of sensitive apps
Use private tools like SafeCalc
Hide notifications
Check your device afterward
Privacy is about keeping what’s yours… yours. You don’t have to be techy or paranoid—just thoughtful. With a little care, you can share your device and still protect your personal space.

for quinn; quinton grew up in an independent safecity that was known for being made up of solely fugitives/insurgency rebels (I haven't thought out much about the insurgencies enemies yet, so this might change drastically tbc). the city--fallenher, was once an industrial zone 70 years ago that manufactured mechs and machinery for the insurgency. his father was neglectful and often left him alone for weeks on end. he was known as the feral kid that wandered around stealing scraps and hiding away from sight. quinn had no interest in other people, but he had a fascination with the old mech shells left over across the city.
he had learnt by watching the rebels reassemble the mechs and reading all of the instruction manuals he could find around the factories. by the time the insurgency raided fallenher and cleared out all the inhabitants--quinn was able to make miniature robots that could perform basic tasks via remote control.
the fallenher raid had taken place when most of the rebels had left to attack a nearby insurgency site. the raid consisted of arresting the rebels that had stayed behind and relocating it's other residents. despite the cities population of rebels--there were a good portion of people who simply just lived there but were unable to leave. quinn was counted as one of them, and when given a choice on where he wanted to go, he chose to join the insurgency mecha team purely because that was the one thing he was interested in. he saw this as an opportunity to learn more of engineering and piloting mechs. he didn't know where his father was, but he really didn't care too much.
his time in the insurgency also revealed to him that he was intersex, he shrugged and moved on, unpreturbed.
quinn was revealed to be a prodigy at mecha, he excelled quickly graduated to enroll in his site's mech team. quinn's nature was never a sociable one, so he quickly became the aloof gifted recluse that many of his peers stayed away from or ignored. he knew very well that some of them even resented him out of envy--when he would come back to his dorm and find his clothes strewn everywhere or rotten food stuffed in his pillow--but he couldn't find himself caring. it was juvenile bullying. he had been through worse. they didn't dare touch his mech as intentional sabotage was punishable by jail time (if a mech goes haywire on the field, it could kill it's pilot)(his instructor greatly favoured him too, so they had never been brave enough to step up the harassment).
one day, someone from the medical team started talking to him whilst he was working on his mech.
the medic didn't cease trying to talk to him once he was brushed off like all the others. he kept coming back every single day and even greeted him when they passed by eachother. it should have annoyed quinn, but it confounded him. he didn't know if this was some new harassment technique or what, but he found that he..kind of looked forwards to it--a fact he realized when arthur the medic didn't show up one afternoon. quinn had been so distracted by that he broke the the lid to his mech's transmission fluid.
arthur had later shown up with food for him the next day, it was the first time someone had ever made food for quinn. it felt, nice. even though it was very burnt, he ate all of it--he had eaten way worse as a child anyways. arthur would keep bringing him food then, and talking with him, and look for him. for the first time in his life, quinn knew companionship. he had something other than mecha that he was interested in.
