There's been so much shit happening to the fandom lately, and the ao3 thing and deliberately misinterpreting Anthony's words to (even though he's 100% right) is just the latest.

But i just wanna say that the Sam fandom (and the adjacent Sambucky fandom) is just the best group of people I've encountered in fandom spaces yet. Everyone's so cool and talented and supportive of one another, and i have so many favourite writers and artists in this little community.

I'm not a creator, just a reader, commenter, lurker, dispenser of kudoses, but it's a really nice group and I appreciate you all.

hi! I think you’ve mentioned on your blog before that you read marvel comics, so as a sambucky fan can I ask you which comics in particular one should read for sam and bucky? I know there’s only one comic book for them, I think - the Cut Of One Head collection. I’ve read that, but I want moore. and I just don’t know where to start. (do you pirate them or do you have the Marvel Unlimited subscription?)

and I saw Mackenzie Lee wrote a Winter Soldier book, have you read it? I’m tempted to check it out. I am mostly asking all of this bc I want to be writing sambucky fic but I struggle with coming up with "villains" and you've come up with so many good villains in your sambucky fics, and just in general you get the mcu vibes just right

Hi anon, thanks for the question and the kind words! I have read some comics and am actively trying to read more, but I have a tendency to get sidetracked. The Falcon and Winter Soldier series is probably peak SamBucky. I've also read some of the Death of Captain America arc and enjoyed that, though it's been a little while and I don't recall how heavy on the SamBucky stuff it was. Sam's most recent Cap series, Symbol of Truth, does have a little bit of Bucky, but you'd have to also read Steve!Cap's Sentinel of Liberty arc to understand it.

The best resource I've found for comics is Comic Book Herald's reading order lists -- Sam and Bucky. Take a look and see where they overlap, and you should find at least some SamBucky content to satisfy you. I'll also tag this post in the hopes that more knowledgeable people might be able to help.

As for your other questions -- yes, I use Marvel Unlimited. I have mixed feelings; it's convenient, but I find the website annoying to navigate and lacking in some features, to the point where you pretty much have to use the app. If you don't mind reading on your phone, or if you have a tablet, I'd say it's worth it. Pretty much all of the older series will be out in trade paperbacks though, so if you have access to a library you may be able to get them for free.

And YES, I did read the Mackenzie Lee Winter Soldier book. It's absolutely like if a Bucky whump fic got published; he's suffering in like every chapter lol. There's no Sam due to the timeframe, and it actually gave me Steve/Bucky* vibes in a few spots. I'll put the specifics under the read since they're (mild) spoilers. But Steve doesn't actually have a huge part in it. I'd say it's worth checking out if you're interested in WWII/early Winter Soldier Bucky. It's comics-adjacent, but not actually part of the main 616 comicsverse, so you can read it without any background.

(And if you're interested in writing villains -- do you want more serious ones, or just sort of like... background plot devices to set up the story? The first one is harder, but if you're interested in the latter, I wouldn't stress it! There's so much weird shit in the comics, if you're going for a lighter tone, you can basically just make up Some Guy, give them a grievance, and let your imagination go.)

*When Bucky and Steve meet for the first time, Bucky thinks about Steve's "thick quads that strained the seams" of his pants, and his "chiseled face." A female friend of Bucky's has a line about wanting to marry Captain America, and then says she isn't sure if Bucky is more possessive over her or Steve. And Bucky flashes back to him and Steve snuggling in a foxhole for warmth, and a different time when he had pneumonia and Steve wrapped them both in a jacket and held him until his fever broke??? Like Steve genuinely isn't a huge part of the story and I wouldn't let that put you off of it if you're otherwise interested in the novel, but I did come away thinking that Mackenzie Lee had probably written Stucky fanfiction at one point.

Actually, I have some thoughts about this. It might not be very organized or articulate but bear with me, please.

First of all, I think that if they gave him a girlfriend, it's not Sharon or Yelena. Sharon and Bucky are acquaintances at best and she's still very bitter about how things went down in CACW as shown in TFTWS (she might hold less of a grudge against Sam since he pushed for her pardon and saved her in ep6 against Karli but she is, as far as we know, still the Power Broker). So, not Sharon. Not Yelena either because I feel like they're probably going to lean towards Yelena being fond of/sweet on Bob (but not in a romantic way) and focus on that when it comes to her rather than try and push a yelena/bucky agenda. If I remember well, there's also a bit of from an interview where someone says Yelena is going to have a soft spot for Bob. So I think we can safely rule out Yelena. (Also, I'm pretty sure she's aroace in the comics so that would be cool for my aroace babes out there to get some representation in a big media such as a marvel movie for once.)

That leaves us with the random woman we got one frame of during the trailer who 1) I'm 100% sure is the one on the phone with Bucky and 2) therefore might be a potential love interest. Now, she doesn't seem to be a hero so that would mean she's civilian. I don't see Bucky realistically getting involved with a civilian. With the baggage he has, I don't think he could get with anyone who hasn't been in the superhero field, or anything adjacent, and therefore might not wrap their head about everything he went through. I'm not trying to woobify him here, btw. What I'm simply saying is that with the baggage he has (brainwashing, torture and going from one fight to another for decades), I can't picture him settling with someone who doesn't have an insider understanding of what avenging and superhero stuff is like. And I also don't say this because I'm a sambucky shipper either, I have my shipping goggles completely off here. Bucky getting romantically involved with a civilian does not make sense at all. At least to me.

Another thing is, they very well might have given Bucky a girlfriend purely as a plot device to use to show his worst fear in the Void. And that is very plausible but also very useless. We know Bucky's worst fear is to still have the Winter Soldier in him/to not be rid completely of HYDRA's control. They could use anyone for that. Hell, they could use Sam. And again, not as a shipper here but as someone who watched TFTWS and CABNW. They're close friends. Close enough for Bucky to see what happened on TV, know Sam would need support and risking missing a flight as a congress candidate in the middle of a campaign to make sure Sam was alright. So if this is why they decide to introduce a girlfriend, I find it useless.

HOWEVER, and please, listen closely, especially the ones who like to harass actors over fictional stuff, we are not about to harass a woman over a fictional character and a fictional relationship. Whoever she is, the direction Marvel took for Bucky is not her fault and she should not be treated like the devil incarnate like I know some of y'all are capable of, over something she had no control over.

is it just me or are so many sambucky writers not writing anymore? I'm realizing more and more people I used to recognize in the tag all the time haven't written in months or longer. I'm sad people are leaving :(

Hi anon! It is sad that some people have stepped away for now but I think it's a natural slow down between shows/movies. We're two years post-tfatws and a year out still from Cap4 (and Thunderbolts). It makes sense that the engagement is less at the moment. I'm sure many will come back next year!

But also, fic writers are just people. They have lives, jobs, everyday troubles, and so we can't expect them to provide a constant output of content. There's been a decline in reader engagement too that leads to writers feeling burned out. I used to be incredibly shy about leaving comments on fics (silly cos I'm just a random name on the web but oh well) and I've been making a conscious effort to comment and reblog more and support the writers still out there writing incredible stories. For us, for free!

And of course, there are moments when certain sects of the fandom (or adjacent to us sambuckies) get a little hostile and ignorant and the exhaustion of dealing with that kind of nonsense also disengages people. Or just keeps folk from going into the tag.

Anyway, this is longer than I intended. 😆

There's still so much amazing work out there to enjoy, even if it's not in the tag. Sometimes, on Ao3, I'll set the filter to a particular date range. Either around a previous film release, or the time after one the tfatws soldier episodes released, and I'll find amazing stories that got lost in the avalanche. Read those, engage, comment, and maybe those authors will see that notification and be re-inspired to create more?

sorry to keep beating a dead horse but like. it's not even frustrating anymore it's just depressing that there's (still) no empathy no compassion no grace given to sam and no self awareness on the fans' behalf. i saw (and still see) the same thing happen to finn from star wars and more recently mel medarda from arcane and it's so prevalent yet so few people can/want to connect the dots and see patterns in their favorite media of, if not blantant racism and misogynoir, then careless decisions and large enough gaps that allow fans to insert their own harmful biases. it's exhausting and it feels like it's everywhere but that's why it's especially important to uplift genuinely thoughtful creators and authors rn

Okay so I rewatched parts of Endgame to write a Sambucky fic. I haven’t seen this movie since the theaters and then S8 ep 3 Game of Thrones destroyed my life.

-The fact that The Snap took Hawkeye’s entire family way outsides the odds proves how much the universe just hates Hawkeye.

-I forgot how much I fucking love Nebula. I want more Nebula and Rhodey. Bucky and Nebula would get on, too. Disabled superheroes club unite.

-I did like the beginning of Endgame. Everyone was just so wrecked and they played it so well. Thanos living his best life in his cottage. That was great.

-I still genuinely do not understand why Steve looks at Peggy’s picture when he’s talking about bringing everyone back from the Snap because he ‘doesn’t know what he’ll do otherwise.’ Like does she represent everyone he’s lost, like Sam and Bucky, his closest connections that are actually dead from the Snap? It doesn’t make sense.

-Is that Steve running a support group because he asked himself, “What would Sam do?”

-This was actually the best scene dealing w the fallout of the Snap. The MCU was definitely not ready to address the full scope of what The Blip means and you see that lack of follow through in every movie/series post Endgame.

-Steve Rogers: “You gotta move on.” UNLESS

-“...Thanos should’ve killed all of us.” I think this is the reason Steve goes back in time, honestly. The Snap just broke him. Without Sam and Bucky, with the enormity of this failure, Steve just lost his ability to cope. Steve has always needed someone to save him from himself but they’re gone. Even though they get most people back, they still lost Tony and Nat and 5 years. Steve can’t win. And Steve Rogers cannot cope with losing. So he rewrites a history where he wins. I don’t even think it’s about not being able to get over Peggy (though they did try to shoehorn that in hard), it was about Steve needing to be in control of his life again.

-It’s one of those situations where I can understand the character’s individual choice, but from a storytelling and narrative perspective, it doesn’t make sense with the story they were telling in the Captain America movies and it’s deeply unsatisfying and confusing. It leaves so many questions and potential consequences. I wasn’t even in this fandom at the time and had zero opinions on any ships, and I was like “this makes no sense.” It still doesn’t. But you know what good for Steggy shippers, ya’ll really won. Stucky fandom, as someone who had to watch Game of Thrones S8 wreck my fandom life, I feel you. My deepest sympathies.

Anyway I skipped to the end after the support group scene. Dammit here we go:

Had to watch the final battle. Cause I had to hear Sam say on your left.

I still lowkey ship Tony/Strange

What you don’t see in the finale battle is where Sam and Bucky keep saving each other. That happened.

The backflips they had to go through to explain why Carol Danvers doesn’t end this movie in 5 minutes. Lol

Tony Stark takes no prisoners. RIP coerced alien soldiers. I have a hard time believing they couldn’t have saved Tony between a portal to Wakanda and magic but fine heroic moving death it is.

Sam didn’t have to go that hard and put a hand on Bucky’s shoulder. But he did.

Okay the finale scene with Sam, Steve and Bucky. The whole reason I watched this lol. So it looks like they’re at the wreck of the Avengers compound. It’s unclear how much time passes between final battle, funeral, old man Steve and the stones. I still theorize Sam and Bucky get arrested after this because they’re fugitives and need to be pardoned.

It’s clear Steve told Bucky and fans were right about this for ages, but why not tell Sam??????? Like seriously wtf??? Couldn’t have said HEY Sam any interest in becoming the new Captain America??? 😂

That last look Steve shares with Bucky; right in my fucking heart.

So when Steve leaves he has no shield because it was destroyed by Thanos. When Steve comes back, he brings a shield to Sam. This seems to confirm the separate branch theory. The shield Sam has comes from a different timeline. Which means Steve came from a different timeline, maybe using the same tech. So it’s possible he rescued Bucky from HYDRA and he, Peggy and Bucky lived a great polyamorous life in that verse. Aw.

But that begs the question of how Steve got the shield in a different timeline. Like WHAT. Did he go find it in the Arctic? Did he convince Wakanda to make another one somehow? Like wtf? Again this ending makes no sense.

Poor Sam. He seriously has to deal with one last mindfuck, losing his best friend that he gave up everything for, and Sam being stalwart and true, just rolls with it. At least Bucky knew. Bucky had the chance to go back with Steve (but for a million reasons Bucky could never go back, that’s what this fic is going to be about lol). But Sam is just left to deal with one more loss.

Can we talk about how Bucky 100% supported Sam getting the shield from the start. Bucky was READY for Cap Sam Wilson. Bucky was like nope this shit is written.

You can see that imposter syndrome revving up to 1000% on Sam’s face. And he turns to Bucky for confirmation this is really happening.

I think this also explains why Bucky is so defensive about the shield. It really is the only thing left of his past. It’s his only tie to the Howling Commandos, to Steve, to the person he was before HYDRA took everything. And the only hope he has in staying behind is the certainty that Sam will be Cap, and that’s the hope that makes him stay. The thin vague tie to Sam and the possibility of their future. So for Sam to reject the shield, oof, I bet that felt like a rejection of Bucky himself. Because Bucky stays for Sam.

(None of this explains why Bucky then ghosts Sam. That is the biggest mystery but there are many delicious possibilities. It’s also possible that Bucky didn’t really ghost Sam - we know his flip phone is just something he has for show. He could be talking to Sam on his smart phone. And they had another falling out.)

a convenient truth

“So here’s how this is gonna go down,”

Sam doesn’t open his eyes, still visibly pale against the dingy hospital gown they’d put him in.

Bucky cocks a lazy eye, curious, but mostly focused on the exits, sure, this is a hospital, but it’s still Madripoor.

“Surprised you can think after all that pukin’ you just did, smilin’ tiger,” He drawls, barely taking his eyes off the door.

Sam, had been a little touch and go in the hours after Sharon's party; when he signaled for Buck to follow him, closed the door, and promptly collapsed in Bucky's room. 

Bucky, had gotten him to the closest hospital and proceeded to threaten more than one medical professional during that time, informing them in lurid detail what exactly would happen if they let the man in that bed die— but that’s beside the point.

Luckily, Sam was mostly unconscious and very oblivious for the "threats of imminent demise" parts of it,

“It’s what you get for doing a shot without knowing it’s a goddamn aphrodisiac,” He informs him from the terribly uncomfortable bedside hospital chair he had planted himself in more than 4 hours ago,

Sam looks nauseous at the memory, “Shit, Barnes— can you give me five seconds without riding my ass? You gonna tell me next this wouldn'ta happened if I woulda had the shield?” He groans and throws an IV’d arm over his eyes, “Fuckin’ Zemo, man.”

It wouldn't have.

Instead, Bucky purses his lips and nods shrewdly, he's spent most of the last hours making sure Sam was still breathing, and planning on what to do to the pompous bastard when they get back to Sharon’s.

“Fuckin' Zemo.” He agrees, tilting his head slightly, “So, what’s this plan?”

“Well, we sure as hell ain’t tellin anybody some bitch drink nearly killed me...”

Bucky’s lips twitch, of course, that would be the major concern, “Obviously.” He agrees with only a little sarcasm,

Sam sniffs, “You didn’t tell Zemo or Sharon we were going to the hospital, right?”

Bucky sighs, “I’m not an asshole, all they know is you started acting all weird and hauled me off toward our rooms,”

“Good.” Sam rolls on his side and fixes the Winter Soldier with a stare that did him proud,

“So,” He licks his lips nervously, they shine in the fluorescent light, Bucky forgets what they’re worried about, “Uh, if anybody asks, that drink was hella strong— with you know— aphrodisiacs and whatnot, like you said, so after the party, I took you back to my room and you had the best fuckin’ night of your life.”

Bucky’s nodding along absently, watching the door until—

“What?” He snaps his head over to Sam who’s lying quietly on his back, lips prim like he hadn’t just said... that.

“You heard me.”

Bucky squints, “how do you know they’ll even believe I’m into you—“

“—they will,” He side-eyes, “I am fine as hell.”

Bucky is pretty sure he imagines the tiny tilt of Sam’s lips.

“How do you know I’ll go along with it?”

“Cause if you don’t, I’ll tell the whole damn world about the time you set up an eHarmony profile,”He folds his hands, "And, see exhibit A:" He gestures at himself,

Buck stares blankly, then settles deeply in his chair, tragically pouty,

“Fuck you, Wilson.” He mutters, almost cute, not that Sam would admit it even under torture.

No way, not even with him sitting there like some kinda like a giant murder cat with a bad attitude.

just been out of the game way too long if that's— it's like— you know— when stranded people start debating drinking saltwater after a while out of desperation.

A doctor steps in, thankfully interrupting that bizarrely insightful runaway train of thought,

“It’s good to see you awake Mr. Wilson,” She says brusquely, “We had some concerns when you were brought in, but it looks like you’re coming around nicely,” She checks his chart, “Wasn’t aware we had an Avenger in the building,”

Sam shoots her his, “Yes I’m a hero why are you interrupting my coffee” face that honestly, she deserves. She misses it, eyeing the winter soldier nervously, clearly having heard second-hand about last nights threats; taking in the man that looks like he could still follow through on most of them.

“And you are?” She asks coldly, and for some reason that pisses Sam off, sure, up until recently he'd been a wanted fugitive of justice but like, there was nothing about the man that wasn't memorable,

“He’s—“

“—apparently" Bucky cuts across, "I’m his fucking boyfriend.” throwing Sam the bitchiest smile he can manage, he extends a hand to the stuttering doctor, “nice to meet you, I’m James.”
