I Know A Guy
The post office on this space station was close to the landing docks, nice and convenient, so several of us went to check our mail while Captain Sunlight met with the sister ship. Not all of the crew had mail drops set up, but I did; this station was a big hub that we stopped at with some regularity. Perfect for relaying the occasional news from home.
And care packages, as it turned out.
I opened the box with some curiosity, sitting on a bench while the others waited in line and the spaceport bustled around us. Inside I found multivitamins, a letter from my parents, a type of cereal that I’d loved as a kid, and a smaller box with a sun logo.
“Ooh, what’d you get?” Paint asked, trotting over with her own box clutched to her scaly orange chest.
“A lot of stuff,” I said in distraction, turning the sun box in search of words. No luck. I opened it to find a fist-sized yellow globe and a base with lots of buttons. And an instruction booklet, thankfully. “Oh, it’s a sun lamp!”
“It even looks like a little sun; how nice! Is it warm, or just bright?” Paint gave it an appreciative look while she opened her package.
“Not sure yet.” I skimmed the instructions and decided to leave that for later. “It’s thoughtful, though. I think my parents were concerned that I’m not getting enough Vitamin D up in space. And other vitamins.” I rattled the bottle.
“That’s a lot of vitamins.”
“Yup. And look, they found the discontinued cereal! I thought it was gone for good.” I carefully opened a corner and fished out a palmful of the maple syrup flavored crunchy goodness that I hadn’t had in years. It was just as tasty as I’d remembered.
Paint sniffed the air. “I don’t recognize that smell. What kind of food is it?”
“Breakfast food,” I said. “I think it’s wheat based, so it’s basically made from ground-up seeds, and flavored with sweet tree sap.”
“That’s … creative,” Paint said.
“Delicious, too. Most tree saps aren’t worth eating, but this one is.” I crunched another mouthful. “Want some?”
“No thank you,” was the prim answer that I’d fully expected. “But look what I got! Fancy heat stickers!” Paint held up a stack of vividly colored starburst shapes, fanned out like playing cards. “I’m going to see if Sunlight, Coals, and Eggskin want any.”
“Thoughtful of you,” I said, closing up the cereal. All four of the lizardy Heatseekers on our ship enjoyed warm things. The ambient temperature was always kept at a comfortable compromise for the various species onboard, but a handy little warm sticker that wouldn’t get in the way was bound to be appreciated.
“Oh, they’re even scented,” Paint said, rubbing one against her snout. “I’m going to have to order more of these.” She sorted through the stack, checking scents and color variations.
Mur and Zhee were still in line, stuck behind a Frillian who was shipping many things to many places, so I settled in to read the note from home while I waited. It was a nice update on the various goings-on of the extended family; all reasonably good news, nothing earth-shattering. Somebody got a scholarship, somebody had twins, somebody was doing well in a competitive bumper-ship derby league, and was incredibly excited about it. There was a lot of detail about that one. I got the impression that this particular second cousin had given everybody a rundown at a family gathering, so now they all knew more about the best types of shrapnel shielding than they probably wanted to. Sounded like the favorite was a human-made version, combining tech that other species had already come up with. The force field worked with the ship’s scanner to predict which parts of the shield would need the most power for a given impact. My cousin was a big fan.
The quiet slap of tentacles on the ground accompanied Mur. “Well that was a long wait,” he said. “But now I’m all set for media for the foreseeable future.” He held a data chip in one tentacle.
Zhee was right behind him, hissing in what sounded like joy instead of irritation for once. He set a box down between his bug feet, not waiting for a bench, and tore it open with his pincher arms. Inside was something that looked like another kind of data chip, and something with straps that I couldn’t begin to figure out.
“Excellent,” Zhee said. “The correct version, the highest quality, and Trrili does not get to listen to it, heathen that she is.”
It took me a second. “Oh, that’s music?” I thought back to the impassioned rant about Trrili’s incorrect opinions on traditional Mesmer leg-singing. I hoped Zhee played it quietly. “And is that — I want to say ‘headphones,’ but—”
“Personal speakers, yes,” Zhee said as he stuffed it all back in the box. “I will be able to listen to the glorious arias in privacy.”
Paint nodded. “Great idea.” She’d heard the leg-singing when I did, and probably wasn’t eager to hear the artful screeching again.
I was trying to guess whether Zhee would be offended if I asked where his ears were, since it occurred to me that I didn’t actually know. But the others were gathering up their things to head back to the ship, and I decided to put it off until later. Maybe I’d ask Eggskin the medic instead.
Something occurred to me as I put the letter back in the box. “Hey guys, pose for a second. I want to send my family a picture with some of my cool alien coworkers.”
The three of them agreed that they were awesome and worth photographing. (Their responses ranged from excited to confident to egotistical.) A few moments later, I had a fantastic group selfie to send with my letter back. Paint’s open-mouthed lizard smile was adorable; Mur stood tall on his blue-black tentacles; Zhee loomed over all of us with the lights shining off his purple exoskeleton; then there was me grinning in the front. I’d definitely be keeping a copy of this.
We made our way back to the ship where it was parked next to a similar lemon-shaped courier ship with folded solar sails. The two captains hadn’t gone inside yet, which made me wonder what they were discussing with such intense expressions.
As we approached, Captain Sunlight was saying, “I may know someone who can help us out, but I’d hate to give him the satisfaction.”
She broke off when Paint trotted up to give her a handful of heat stickers and to show off the blue-white one she herself was wearing. Apparently it smelled like a plant I’d never heard of.
“Thank you; that’s very thoughtful,” Captain Sunlight said. “Those sound like just the thing.” She picked out a green one and pasted it to her own chest, where it contrasted nicely with her yellow scales.
Zhee and Mur tromped into the ship. I lingered, curious. “Is all the ship business going all right?” I asked.
“For the moment,” the captain said as she stowed the rest of the stickers and the backing for that one in her belt pouch. “Just considering our options with some monetary considerations.”
Captain Kamm waved a tentacle. “Both ships are on the family plan for damage insurance, and the rates have made an unpleasant jump.”
I shifted the box to my other side. “Do we need to earn more money?”
“No, it will be all right.” Captain Sunlight shook her head. “I have a lead on a better deal. I just need to make a call or two.”
Captain Kamm ushered us all into our ship, wasting no time. Paint disappeared to share her heat stickers while the two captains adjourned to the lounge. I put my things away and hurried back. No one had told me to mind my own business, so I was going to listen in before writing a letter to send back home.
I was quick, but Captain Sunlight was quicker. She was just ending the holo call when I arrived. A green-scaled Heatseeker gazed earnestly from the projection, urging her to get back to him as soon as she could.
“If you can get better shields, I can promise you a savings of at least 15% compared to your current plan!”
“Yes, thank you,” Captain Sunlight said. “I’ll see what I can do. Say hi to the elders for me.”
He said he would, and she turned off the projection with another deep sigh. Captain Kamm sat next to her, weaving tentacles together thoughtfully.
Captain Sunlight tossed the communicator onto the table and sat back with folded arms. “Of course it couldn’t be that simple. He talks a good game at every gathering, but oh no: prerequisites.”
I sat down at the end of the couch, absently petting Telly who was curled up in the center. In proper cat fashion, she responded by stretching to take up even more space. I was thinking about what the captain had just said about shields.
I asked, “Does he need a certain kind in order to get us the better deal?”
Captain Sunlight waved a hand. “Just a higher degree of resistance to micrometeorites. The shielding we have is perfectly serviceable, but it’s apparently not enough for the good rates.”
“Would we need to overhaul everything, or would it be enough to layer another kind over what we have? Like, say, a kind that connects to the ship’s scanners?”
The captain gave me a look. “Do you have a specific type in mind?”
“Possibly,” I said. “Are you familiar with bumper-ship derbies?”
Captain Kamm twirled a tentacle. “That’s some of the human ‘adrenaline junkie’ nonsense, yes?”
“I think there are some Smashers and other races that really get into it as well, but yes,” I said. “The letter from home I just got mentioned the shielding they use.”
I explained what I knew while they listened intently. Paint came in to join us and sat on the other side of Telly, who took the extra attention as her due. By the time I was done talking, everyone in the room was looking optimistic.
“Go ahead and reach out,” Captain Sunlight said. “We don’t have to rush off anytime soon. With any luck, we can get all this settled at once.”
“Here’s hoping!” Captain Kamm said, touching four tentacle-tips together over her head in what looked like the Strongarm version of crossed fingers.
“I’ll see if I can route a call through to home now,” I said, getting up.
Telly meowed in protest at the movement, then crawled onto Paint’s lap and rubbed her head against the heat sticker, purring audibly. Paint looked delighted.
I left with a wave, hurrying off to my quarters with plans to make a phone call, potentially save the day, then set up the sun lamp for the benefit of a certain fuzzy little heat-lover as well as for my own sake.

These are the ongoing backstory adventures of the main character from this book.
Shared early on Patreon! There’s even a free tier to get them on the same day as the rest of the world.
The sequel novel is in progress (and will include characters from these stories. I hadn’t thought all of them up when I wrote the first book, but they’re too much fun to leave out of the second).

The People We Become || Reverse Portal AU || Stan Vs. The Multiverse
Back to talking about My Mans and this AU
Stan's Adventures Through The Multiverse
After tumbling through the exploding portal Stan ends up in this sort of between space, lost between dimensions where there are rifts steadily opening and closing around him. He has no idea really what they are or where they go, so he's lost and freaking out.
He's desperately calling out for Ford to come save him. For a while, he's determined to stay put in case the portal opens back up again, but his cynical side tells him Ford has already abandon him and he's stuck here forever. Stan fight back and forth with himself, both unwilling to believe that Ford would just let him stay here forever and uncertain that Ford doesn't think this is exactly what Stan deserves.
Bill senses the Dimension 46'\ Portal open and goes to the location only to find Stanley and no portal to be found. Seeing Stanley with the journal, Bill tries to manipulate Stan into giving him the journal, saying that he and Ford wrote it together long ago.
Bill says if Stan give him the journal, he'll send Stan home easy peasy. Of course, Stan knows a con when he sees one and tell him to go fuck himself. Bill is less than please, but keeps trying to manipulate Stan. It doesn't work.
Stan: You know, my brother might be the one with the brains, but I've got that other thing.
Bill: Oh? And what might that be?
Stan: PUNCHING!
[Stanley punches Bill in the eye and launches himself into a random rift.]
Luckily, Stan lands himself in a sort of interdimensional central hub where travelers can stop and rest for a time. Unluckily, this particular hub is dominated by a shitty totalitarian government and he gets stopped almost immediately by law enforcement. He doesn't have real ID on him, just one of his shitty fakes, which might have worked on random crappy traffic cops, but not dimension hopping violent super cops.
Stanley gets thrown in jail with some other petty criminals, which is truly his home element these days. He makes some quick friends and they break out, stealing some poor sap's a luxury ship mini cruiser along the way.
Now that he's made some criminal friends, he gets some totally absolutely completely legal ID and credentials and learns to pilot ships.
For a while, Stan travels around, taking sketchy jobs, running with various crime group and actually... having a somewhat good time? Turn out space crime is kind of more fun that normal crime, even if he feels like shit for doing some of it. It's just as dark and dangerous as the life he was living before.
Over the years he has a couple run ins with Bill and usually scrapes out of it more or less in one piece. None of it is pretty though. It is Bill, after all.
He runs with various crews, making money, losing money, racking up debt, going to prison, escaping prison, becoming a fugitive, becoming a hitman, a thief and all kinds of bad shit. But after twenty or so years, he gets tired of it.
He decides to settle on a quiet planet and lay low for a little bit with the small amount of money and connections he's made over the years. The planet he's on is like a small town. He's nervous around such 'normal' people, but does well with kids and ends up being the mysterious and gruff, but kind old man who feeds the kids who don't get enough to eat at home or don't have a safe place to stay. It's nice. But doesn't last very long.
He catches wind of a trans-dimensional locator that wouldn't necessarily get him home, but it would be a start. He'd have to find a way to hook it up to his Rift Hopper(the device he uses for dimensional travel) AND keep it untraceable to Bill. It won't be easy but it's closer to a way home than he's had since he got here.
He joins up with a rag-tag treasure hunting crew that might be a little morally gray, but they're better than a lot of the crime lords Stan has worked with. He travels with them for a while, being their main muscle and negotiator for jobs.
When there's trouble, he takes it upon himself to get them out of it and tends to be very self sacrificing. He is still Stanley Pines after all.
This crew LOVES their goofy violent self-loathing grandpa and are 100% on board with helping him find the translocator. Even if it means he'll leave them ):
But as Mabel and Dipper make progress on the portal back in their dimension, blips of Dimension 46'\ are sent into the multiverse. Which means Stanley can track a rift! ...But so can Bill.
Bill comes after Stan and his new crew, taking them hostage. Stan agrees to go with Bill if he lets the crew go. Bill tries to make a deal, but Stan tricks him, gives the crew the translocator and the crew narrowly escapes. Stan does not.
Bill holds Stan captive and tortures him, both to get the translocator and because he just fucking hates Stan after all this. Also, torture is FUN! (for Bill)
Stan can't escape and starts to think maybe this is just how he's going to spend the rest of eternity. He starts losing hope, thinking it's what he deserves for the life he's lead.
But then! His crew comes to the rescue! No way they were going to leave their weird violent human grandpa to Bill's wrath! They risk their lives to save Stan and escape Bill
... but bad news. The translocator device broke when they were making their initial escape. Stan is pretty okay with it, but then... the portal opens. It's definitely to his dimension, but it's locked onto his energy signal some how???
He's confused, because why would Stanford be looking for him after three decades of nothing? Could someone else be searching for him? What the hell is going on?
But the portal is right there and finally Stan gets to go home! But he knows Bill is still after him so he has to close this dumb reckless portal asap
....tbh now I just wanna write a bunch of shorts about Stanley's adventures through the multiverse

- used to think anything abt romance was gross.
- mostly when he was a kid, if he saw anyone kiss he'd gag.
- he claimed he would never fall in love and never intended to.
- until he met you of course!
- at this point, he was still adamant about the whole anti romance spiele.
- he fully believed it, he didn't think he'd budge.

hi chrissy!! i've been reading your stuff for a while n i love your ideas! you always bring them to life in such creative and fun ways!
might be weird question but i'm writer on here too and recently i've been getting more requests. i just wanted to ask how you deal with that? like balancing your wips, personal/professional life, and reqs (if you do them)?
i don't mean to ramble but it's so stressful, especially if i don't particularly like the idea. but then i feel bad if i don't do it😔 but this also isn't my job it's my hobby😀
no pressure, i was just curious. enjoy the rest of your day!!! your lads stuff is so good btw. first ever lads fic i read was one of yours (i think it was your sylus arranged husband hcs)🥹
thank you so much bb 😭😭💓 I'm so glad you like my writing and I'm bringing you into lads territory 🤭🤭 I love my Sylus and Caleb!!!
So requests should only be taken if they absolutely speak to you and scratch that itch in your brain. I tell everyone there's a chance I never will. It's all what inspires you, don't ever do shit bc you feel obligated, that will sap the fun from writing 💔
So I'm insane lol, I work full time have 3 kids and a hubs and idk I still write a million stories lol, but i write fast and I write as therapy. It helps me out with so much anxiety so I rly need to write to feel good. Thus I can't explain the balance but I will say make time every day to jot down something even if it's like 2 lines in your notes!!! It'll eventually form something.
Smooches and love in your writing journey, remember it's for you and it's free, ppl can love it or move on 🫶🫶🫶

silly hypothetical: one day, for whatever reason, tpc decides that all trainers have to be assigned a type specialty, no matter how unfitting it is. there is no such thing as multitype. this retroactively applies to every single trainer in the pokémon games.
all this just to ask - which singular type would you assign to ingo?
(justifications for each option under cut)
*note: throughout these small justifications, i refer to sneasler together with ingo's team, given that unlike the others in the 'questionably connected' category, its connection to ingo is very well-established. while i do admit that sneasler wouldn't be undeserving of her own exclusive category (s-rank, s for sneasler) i'd prefer to keep this already long section from getting even longer.
steel
pokémon with this type on ingo's team: excadrill, klinklang, magnezone, probopass
pokémon who aren't this type, but could be justified as an off-type for flavour reasons: garbodor (razor mouth), haxorus (axe); chandelure (chandeliers were made of metal) and alakazam (spoons) if you really want to push it)
pokémon that are questionably connected to ingo: escavalier
ingo's most common type by far. which makes sense - trains have a strong association with steel, to the point that the term for railways translates literally to "metal roads" in a few other languages.
excadrill and klinklang can be considered his signature pokémon; the latter is the only pokémon explicitly shown under his ownership in the manga, while the former is paired with his base form in pokémon masters. in fact, the battle subway's hub being named gear station could also reference klinklang's evolutionary line. consider that klink is a pair of twin gears that represent gemini in the canon unova horoscope, and the subway bosses, well.
---
ground
pokémon with this type on ingo's team: excadrill, gliscor
pokémon who aren't this type, but could be justified as an off-type for flavour reasons: crustle, boldore, probopass - albeit all are rock-types, and hence only under consideration for how interchangeable these two types are conceptually
pokémon that are questionably connected to ingo: kleavor (off-type)
what this type lacks in raw numbers, it makes up for in iconicity. gliscor is ingo's ace pokémon in legends: arceus, while excadrill, as mentioned above, is paired with him at base in PMEX (which means ingo's base unit is a ground-type pair in this game). trains are land transport, after all, and subways are explicitly railways in the ground.
EDIT: also, earthquake. slipped my mind earlier, thanks for reminding me!
---
ghost
pokémon with this type on ingo's team: chandelure
pokémon who aren't this type, but could be justified as an off-type for flavour reasons: sneasler (is extinct), probopass (based off mo'ai), accelgor (is sneaky), gliscor (is spooky in concept)
pokémon that are questionably connected to ingo: basculegion, wyrdeer (off-type)
chandelure alone manages to make ghost worth considering, as ingo's most notable pokémon; featuring heavily in the anime, being the only pokémon from his former team to be mentioned in L:A and finally being paired with him for his sygna outfit in PMEX (as a ghost-type pair).
that, and he's goth with a frightening team. he'll fit right in.
---
poison
pokémon with this type on ingo's team: garbodor, sneasler
pokémon who aren't this type, but could be justified as an off-type for flavour reasons: gliscor (known for its venom, poison heal, learns toxic), chandelure (passively saps life), accelgor (is a squishy slimy bug), tangrowth (giant plant)
sneasler alone, being the holder of the toxic plate, would've been enough to make poison a worthy consideration, but even better is that ingo does canonically actually use another poison-type in garbodor, and has the non-poison-type CEO of toxic as his ace.
---
rock
pokémon with this type on ingo's team: crustle, boldore, probopass
pokémon who aren't this type, but could be justified as an off-type for flavour reasons: excadrill (drills through rocks), sneasler (climbs rocks), gliscor (clings to rocks), machamp (moves rocks), haxorus (lives in a cave)
pokémon that are questionably connected to ingo: kleavor, gurdurr
this is a type that has managed to show up in ingo's team a surprising amount (2nd most behind steel), but never gets the limelight. which is especially notable considering how many of his team's species are known for interacting with rocks, and sandstorm (his and excadrill's niche in PMEX) was meant to be primarily for rock-types.
---
bug
pokémon with this type on ingo's team: crustle, accelgor
pokémon who aren't this type, but could be justified as an off-type for flavour reasons: gliscor (is a scorpion), tangrowth (is a plant), machamp (has 6 limbs)
pokémon that are questionably connected to ingo: kleavor, escavalier
you know how unova has 3 bug specialists, 2 of them are final bosses and 1 of them is ingo's brother? what if we made another one? what if we went "screw it, ingo babysits all the joltik in gear station-"
at any rate, bug does show up quite often between the subway bosses' teams, especially when counting PMEX-exclusives. honestly deserved, considering their home region is known for being the region where bug-types actually had a chance to shine.
---
fighting
pokémon with this type on ingo's team: machamp, sneasler
pokémon who aren't this type, but could be justified as an off-type for flavour reasons: haxorus (axe)
pokémon that are questionably connected to ingo: gurdurr, kleavor (off-type, axe), escavalier (off-type, knightly with lances)
there is definitely a valid connection to be made with all the fighting-types showing up around ingo. especially considering his purpose in L:A is to help others train to be stronger - the classic arc for many fighting-types.

Yo! Been playing Sky for a while (about 2 years now) and noticed you wanted help. Anything in particular you'd like help with?
If not, here's a few things:
I suggest befriending every player you come across as the point of the game is to help and be helped by other players! You can also request guides, who will be more experienced players who can hold your hand and guide you through the game! A very useful thing about being guided is that while you don't have to use wings to fly, you lend yours to your guide so they can fly for longer and recover wings much faster! The game is all about collaboration.
I'd also suggest sticking to the main path for your first visit to an area and then on the subsequent visits you make to collect more hearts or candles or spirits or winged lights, pick any direction and explore! Guides or friends can be helpful for this too since they can bypass blockades to new areas for you as long as they themselves can pass through them.
Keep in mind that Sky is an experience that is meant to be replayed over and over and over again! Once you beat the final area, it'll take away your wings so you can go find them again! It'll also give you exclusive rewards to achieve higher on cosmetic/spell and friendship trees. There are frequent events such as viritual AURORA concerts or Seasons to keep you coming back! Sky is like a community that you're always welcome to come back to no matter how much of the game you've played. Everyone is very very friendly! Have fun and keep exploring!!
-Russ
Yay! Thanks for the advice! Yeah, I visited the dragon party arena today (I don't know what you call it) then accidentally stumbled on a whirlpool of clouds, jumped in, and ended up in a spooky desert area with strength sapping mud and scary dragons. One of them bit me and I lost all strength and turned grey. It was terrifying. Then I went to a lit torch and regained my strength back.
Not long after that, I encountered a person that my game named Igab and they helped me through the area, collecting wings, red candle flames, and spirits. I tried to help them destroy the darkness tree but I was too clumsy with the controls and I couldn't do it. Oh well, I'm using my laptop keyboard to control my character so it isn't the easiest.
My current biggest question is how do I change my clothes and hair? I keep trying to change them at the hubs, but all I can do is change my hair (and there's only 4 choices).

Prearranged Arrangement
@dukexietyweek 2024 Day 4 - Soulmates + Colors
Word count: 3038 (Ao3)
Rating: T
Characters: Remus, Virgil, Roman, Dragon Witch
Pairings: Dukexiety
Warnings: ftm!Remus, arranged marriages, mild violence, sex mention, soulmate au,
Remus always knew he would have to get married for political reasons, despite being one of the few royals with a soul mark. His only caveat is that his husband has to share him with his soulmate. But his latest suitor has him questioning that condition.
---
Sometimes being a prince was a pain in the ass. Remus sure thought so! He was supposed to be a good little boy and play nice with his little brother, play nice with all the snooty hued nobles and dignitaries, and get married off to secure more political power with his puss. Granted, he would be fine with that last part, if he didn't have a stupid mark on his neck.
Like most commoners, he had a patch of skin that was a different color than the rest, dark purple in his case, where his soulmate would first touch him. No one else in his family had a soul mark, not since his great grandfather, and it only led to tragedy for him. Remus absolutely refused to let that sorrow attack him. And he would have fun keeping it away.
“Remus,” the queen hummed as she cut into her fish with the utmost dignity, “We received a marriage proposal for you this morning.”
“Who's the poor sap who's rejecting me?” Remus jeered and set his silverware down. Roman was scowling at him, waiting for him to make a scene.
“The eldest prince of Blinthansa, the Vigilant Violet, and he won't be rejecting you. Queen Millicent informed me that she is aware of your mark, and it is not a problem for them,” the Queen said and took a dainty bite of her food.
“Then I get to reject him!” Remus gasped and wiggled his shoulders. He was a handsome little imp, and any rejection from him would hurt! He was looking forward to causing a little upset! Roman, who was judging those wiggles, glared at him, daring him to step out of line again.
“You will do no such thing,” she huffed, “I have gone out of my way to ensure that our allies and subjects address you as a prince while discarding every proposal letter that dared to revert to your former title. You are Prince Remus the Veridian, and you have to get married for political reasons, you know this—this is a wonderful opportunity for you to make the most of your situation.”
“So this guy knows I can make babies, and he's still calling me a man? You're really not letting me worm my way out of this! What if I meet my soulmate? I'm not pulling a gramps and letting this suitor kill them because he thinks my cunt is his!”
Roman jolted to his feet and knocked his chair over.
“How dare you say such a thing in front of Mother!?” Roman snarled, “Have you no shame!?”
“Mmmm, nope! I don't see why you care about my future marriage, it won't keep you from the crown when you come of age! If you make it that long!” Remus responded with a dastardly grin.
“Veridian! Vermilion!” the queen snapped, “Enough!”
Roman wilted and picked up his chair, pouting like a kicked puppy. Remus rolled his eyes and picked up his silverware. He was used to the lectures about his manners.
“Now then,” the queen sighed, “Remus, you will set off for Blinthansa in three days to acquaint yourself with the royal court and the territory.”
“Wait, wait, wait,” Remus said and waved his hand, “Isn't he supposed to come here?”
“Seeing as you would be the prince consort, you would have to go there. If he were merely a noble, it would be as you said.”
“So I have no idea who I'm supposed to marry, I have to go to a foreign country, and I have to give up my soulmate? And I'm getting kicked out in three days?”
“You say that as if I wouldn't let you return. Granted, I want this to go well, as a mother and as a ruler. Blinthansa is a hub of magical trade and a powerful ally,” she said and took a sip of her wine, “So give the poor prince a chance.”
“Fine! But I'm going incognito, no guards or fancy carriage.”
“Aren't there monsters in Blinthansa?” Roman pouted. He was right, of course, but that wouldn't stop Remus!
“I'm the best fighter in the kingdom! A couple beasties are nothing!” Remus beamed. The queen knew it was pointless to argue with him over this. Remus would go off on his own anyway, regardless of her concern.
“You must carry a satchel of lavender and wolfsbane if you want to venture off alone. I will send a carriage with gifts for the royal family and your amenities, so I urge you to stay close to the party. And don't forget your scarves. The last thing you need is a scandal over your mark.”
“You got it!” Remus beamed. He would make it to the capital, meet his supposed fiance, and flee into the night after rejecting yet another proposal. It was the perfect way to take back his own life!
.
A week later…
Remus was so bored! He arrived in Blinthansa a whole day before the royal caravan, and he had no one to talk to or annoy. Queen Millicent was kind enough to welcome him and show him his room, but she was busy being the queen! After two days of doing nothing but building a ballista out of his tea set and ribbons, and wandering the grounds, he needed social interaction!
He made up his mind to go out on the town and see the sights, without some boring escort. He let a couple of the maids know where he was headed and why he was wearing commoners clothes without a scarf and left before they could protest. What were they really going to do? Get the guards?
The capital of Blinthansa, Spinnaha, was a bustling city on the Webbilubbi river. Remus could fall in love with such a chaotic place. The streets were lined with shops and merchant stalls, and in the middle of the square there was an ornate fountain of a dragon on a spider web. The back alleys were shady and dangerous, there were street performers and plenty of opportunities to pickpocket, and the music that filled the air was eerie and cheerful.
Remus didn't have much money on him, so he wasn't too worried about getting robbed. He was more concerned about the odd magical creatures that seemed to follow certain people around. There were cats and dogs, ferrets and birds, dragons and butterflies—and so many creatures from myths. Blinthansa was known for its magic, so it was possible they were familiars. And if they were just pets, that was even cooler!
He noticed one that seemed to be out of place, perhaps even attacking someone. He was near the edge of a small crowd, cheering for a fiddler who was going to town, when he saw a giant spider on the back of a tall, cloaked figure. Its glistening purple fangs were moving as if it were chewing on the cloak with the intent to kill.
Remus didn't think, he just reached out and smacked the spider off of the cloaked figure.
“Ack!”
In a flash he found himself pinned against the nearest alley wall with a gloved hand holding him up by the neck.
“What do you think you're doing?” the man growled. Remus couldn't see his face, but he could see how built this guy was when he wasn't hunched over and hiding.
“Oh, just hanging,” Remus chuckled, happy that he could still breathe.
“Try to rob me again and kiss your fingers goodbye,” he huffed and brandished a knife. Remus had never been more turned on.
“I was just getting a bigass spider off your back! I'm many things, but thief isn't one of them! Unless you want me to steal your heart!” Remus argued. He was enjoying himself too much! He could only imagine having this much fun when he met his—
Wait.
This guy was holding his neck exactly where his mark was!
“Don't you dare hurt my familiar!” the man snapped and squeezed his throat. This guy was doing things to Remus and he had no idea!
“I didn't realize!” Remus gasped, “It won't happen again!”
The man dropped him on his ass and sighed. To him, Remus was obviously just a confused foreigner, not worth the frustration. To Remus, this man was a total babe!
“If I hurt your pride, I could always kiss it better!” Remus cooed and fluttered his lashes, “I am at the perfect angle!”
The man snorted and shook his head.
“You're at the perfect angle to get your teeth kicked in.”
“Use your third leg and you can!”
“Are you always this horny or do you really think I might kill you?”
“That's partly why I'm horny!”
The man put his knife away and rolled his shoulders. He was clearly not used to this reaction. He even seemed flustered.
“Go jump in the river and cool off. I have better things to do.”
“What could be better than teaching a sexy little imp a lesson?”
“Meeting my fiance,” the man shrugged and left in a hurry. Even with that cloak, Remus could tell that the man had a biteable ass.
Remus swore under his breath. Of course the first person who could be his soulmate just had to be engaged! He was getting cock teased by the universe right before he had to meet the prince. It was so unfair!
He got up and brushed himself off. It was probably time to go back to the palace and get ready to deliver his rejection. And then maybe flee for his life.
-
Once he was squeaky clean and dressed in his favorite green and black jacket, minus the tall collar, he was ready to meet royalty. But a certain sadness hit him as he navigated the castle. Remus was about to deal with a marriage proposal from a stranger, a stranger who knew that he would choose his soulmate over a political marriage. And the thought that his future husband would kill his soulmate, just like what happened to his great grandfather, made him sick.
Remus approached the parlor and knocked on the door, rubbing his exposed neck, since Queen Millicent requested he leave his scarf back in his room. He was not ready for this.
A woman opened the door and smiled at him. She was in a simple, elegant black dress with red scales adoring the collar. Her piercing red eyes matched her lips and her raven hair fell around her horns and over her shoulders.
“Your Majesty, Queen Millicent the Cerise Dragon Witch, it is an honor to be summoned to your parlor at such a late hour,” Remus said with a bow. Queen Millicent snickered and ushered him inside.
“Spare me the formalities,” she said and led him to one of two couches.
“Oh thank gods!” Remus gasped and flopped on a couch, “Formalities are worse than pulling off my fingernails one at a time!”
Queen Millicent sat down on the couch next to his and chuckled.
“You really are the perfect candidate for my son's hand. And for the country,” she said and motioned to the coffee table in front of them. It was loaded with tea and sweets.
“I don't know about that! I’m pretty clueless about the culture here, and I might not even accept his proposal,” he said and poured himself a cup of tea.
“Why wouldn't you?” the queen asked with a smirk and eyed his mark.
“I might have met someone else,” Remus shrugged, “I like to keep my options open.”
“Then perhaps you should meet him before you decide. He's having second thoughts as well, but he agreed to at least meet you first. I think that's a reasonable request,” she hummed and got up.
Remus watched her ghost to the door and open it. It was as if she knew someone was on the other side.
“Virgil, darling, take a deep breath,” she said as she ushered a young man inside. He was tall and strong with shaggy raven hair and the prettiest pout. He wasn't dressed up to meet a foreign dignitary, in a plain tunic, leggings, and gloves, but he made it look good.
“Prince Remus, allow me to introduce my eldest, Prince Virgil the Violet of Blathansa,” Queen Millicent said and dragged Virgil to stand next to her. He was staring at the floor and fidgeting like a scared child.
“Nice to meet you,” Remus said with a smile. Even if they didn't get hitched, he wouldn't mind being friends with this guy!
Virgil went rigid and his eyes snapped to Remus. There was a mix of emotions on that pretty face that Remus couldn't place.
“If you don't mind,” Queen Millicent hummed and kissed her son's cheek, “I have to make sure that your father's room is ready for his return. You two should get better acquainted.”
Before Virgil or Remus could protest, she zipped out of the room. The tension in the air tripled.
“Are you just going to stand there and admire my sexy mustache or are you going to sit down?” Remus jeered and wiggled his upper lip. He was proud of his mustache—it took so much time and so many potions to grow!
Virgil reluctantly sat on the other couch, keeping his distance from his guest.
“So you aren't much of a talker, or are you pissed off I'm marked?” Remus said and took a swig of tea.
Virgil was silent.
“Well if the mark bothers you, I have worse news, I think I found my soulmate, and I want him carnally. So if you have a problem with sharing me, we can call this whole thing off!” Remus said and set his cup on the table.
“I might have a problem with that,” Virgil said softly. If that voice didn't set off the alarm bells, the giant spider that crawled onto the back of the couch did.
“That was you?!” Remus gawked, wearing the brightest grin. Virgil shrugged and took off his gloves.
“Back in the market, yeah. I thought it was weird you were flirting with me. I was threatening you and you're out of my league.”
“So that means I didn't meet my soulmate,” Remus suddenly pouted. He was the only royal he knew with a mark. It was silly to think that Virgil would have one, much less one that matched his.
“You think so?” Virgil hummed and held up his hand. Remus noticed that his forefingers and thumb had a single green mark across the palm side.
“I get it if you're disappointed—” he continued and averted his gaze.
He did not expect to get pinned to the couch by a hyper prince.
“Why would I be disappointed? I'm getting engaged to my soulmate, he's hot and scary and adorable, and I like it here!” Remus laughed, “This is better than anything I expected!”
“You’re really excited about marrying the guy who threatened you with a knife,” Virgil grumbled and met his gaze.
“Hell yeah!” Remus grinned and nodded, “I love a man with a dark side and a sexy voice! Don't tell me you're disappointed that I'm the prince they sent! I'm no refined gentleman! I'm a menace!”
“I’m not disappointed. You don't have to be refined. You're cuter the way you are,” Virgil said with a faint blush.
“You think I'm cute? You'll change your mind when I'm unbound!” Remus jeered and ran his fingers through Virgil’s hair. Virgil melted into the touch and shook his head.
“Doubt it. You'd still be a cute little prince.”
“I’d be a sexy little prince!” Remus countered, “But you're sweet! We should go on a date tomorrow and handle the marriage contract! I'm not letting you get away!”
“I'll show you around the castle and the training grounds before I have to go  practice. After you apologize to Cass.”
“Practice? Cass?” Remus pouted and sat on his lap.
“I play piano and violin, I have to practice,” Virgil explained, “And Cass is my familiar.”
“Can I stick around for your practice? Please?” Remus gasped and wiggled, “Can you get any hotter?!”
Virgil blushed furiously and nodded. At the same time that spider chirped and crawled towards Remus cautiously.
“Hi Cass!” Remus giggled, “I'm sorry for slapping you earlier! I thought you were attacking Virge! No hard feelings?”
The spider chirped and crawled up his arm. Her spider paws tickled, but he didn't jerk away. She rubbed against his cheek and crawled back to the couch.
“She likes me!” Remus beamed, “I really hit the jackpot! I'm not magic or musical but I get a musician and a witch as a soulmate!”
“I'm a witch, but you're the spellbinding one,” Virgil grumbled shyly. Remus froze and hid his face in his hands. Oh no, he was smooth too! Remus was going to combust!
“You okay?”
“My face is going to explode!” Remus whined and lowered his hands. He was beet red. And Virgil just had to smirk and make it worse.
“Maybe you're not too far out of my league,” he teased and grabbed Remus' hands, “I'll stop by your room tomorrow morning to show you around.”
Just to make Remus implode, he kissed his knuckles.
“Who gave you the right to be romantic?” Remus whined, “Threaten my life and manhandle me instead!”
“Does that make you uncomfortable?” Virgil hesitated and let go of his hands.
“It makes me want to cuddle you and rip your clothes off!” Remus argued and crossed his arms.
“Then I'll just hold off until the wedding night,” Virgil said and gently placed his mark over Remus'.
“I can't believe this is real,” he said and let Remus lean into him.
“It's real, I'm real, you're real, and I really want you to kiss me!”
Virgil chuckled softly and kissed his cheek, releasing his throat. Remus pouted at him and cuddled up to his chest.
“I'll kiss you on the lips when my mom isn't waiting outside the door. She's waiting for the right moment to catch us in a compromising position,” Virgil explained and hugged him.
Remus giggled and cuddled closer. He was with his soulmate and they were going to get married. He couldn't be happier.

💛 Start from Chapter 1
💚 More Pixels Imperfect fics

Fake dating to fool the government isn't as easy as it looks; Martyn and Cleo start drawing lines.
Meanwhile, Mayor Smajor1995 and mayoral candidate GoodTimesWithScar debate allay hybrid boundaries and vex rights in the server hub. Turns out, politics aren't easy, even in Minecraft fantasy world...
(First 1,000 words under the cut)

Status: Awkward
Historian, museum curator, and stadium gamemaster
🖤  🧡  💚
BigB blinks. "I don't believe it… What did I just hear?"
Cleo digs her nails in Martyn's skin. "What did you hear?"
"He's courting you?" BigB vaporizes the notebook back into the soul slot of his inventory. He leaps down from the lamppost. Enormous moth wings crack open long enough for two small flaps, then pull in like rolled-up cookie dough as his feet tap against the bedrock road. "No way," he says, and Cleo does not love the tremor in his voice. BigB stalks forward. His hands shake at the wrists. Martyn slides one arm forward, putting it between BigB and Cleo, but BigB doesn't even slow. He opens his mouth, eyes wobbling like a reflection in a pond. Or maybe a twisted mirror. "Did you just pretend to be courting to get Scott off your back? Did you just lie to Scott?"
"What?" The word gushes out. Martyn grips their arm. BigB steps forward, wings sweeping at his heels like a cloak, and those few extra pixels of height difference suddenly make all the difference in the world. Cleo brushes Martyn aside, fading him to the background, and lurches forward to meet BigB in the middle of the road. He wraps his arms around himself, nails curled and dragging down his sleeves. They're catching in his blue jumper threads. "Excuse me?"
"You're lying. Cleo, this isn't you."
Why does he know? Why can he see through her to her core and recognize what Scott couldn't? It twists a sword around and around in her gut, the same way BigB twisted it when he stabbed upwards, clutching her body close against him in that Last Life river all those years ago. Before he let her slump forward, splashing, dead and swirling in Cleo-colored pixels all the way down. She wishes for half a second she was Martyn just to have a tail to snap. "Who are you to tell me how I feel?"
BigB opens his mouth… but nothing comes out. He closes it again, rolling back on his heels. He blinks. He blinks again, and Cleo's hearts pump through her code and wham against their skin. BigB doesn't say the words. He just looks at her, but she can read the question in his face.
"You forgive him for killing you on-server over a pointless joke? He took your life and you take him back? You share your flowers… But when it was boogeyman curse stuff, you threw me away? You still avoid eye contact? Still claim to hate me? Still claim what's broken can never be fixed?"
He doesn't say any of that, because he's BigB. BigB is a quiet person. He just…
He looks at her, and she reads it off him. Cleo's fingers tighten at her sides, pinching pixels until the nails phase through skin. BigB backs off fast, mumbling and lifting his palms in some roundabout apology. Cleo says something then, like "Don't start- We're over-" and Martyn moves forward then. He wraps his arm behind her neck so it drapes around her shoulder. She doesn't push him off. He's loose, eyeing her, waiting for a signal.
They could probably say something like "Martyn's my soulmate" and maybe he'd believe it. But… those words gleam like bitter poison on her tongue.
Double Life was just a mod and a randomizer on a server of 14 people. Martyn's not "perfect" for her. He's just the sap who latched onto her health bar like a leech. Tango and Jimmy can play it up all they like, and Etho and Joel are the same way. But Martyn is not that good a match for her. He's "there." He's not "perfect." And the soulmate mechanic doesn't mean jack out in Between. It's unrealistic to find someone who fits so well in your life in a server of only 14.
"I'm sorry," BigB mumbles, lowering his head. His wings shift, the eyespots squeezed tight just like his actual eyes. They're chocolate chips sinking into cookie dough. He takes two steps back, squaring his shoulders, and links his hands behind his neck. Full posture. Wings down, not flapping in her face. "Did Scott yell at you? Are you okay? … I won't tell him. I know what it's like to need a breath of air. It's one of the reasons I modded away my ability to see through blocks. It was… too tempting."
Cleo's brain skips a beat. "We're fine, thanks. And don't you tell Scott we were lying, because we weren't lying."
Why him? fills the silence between them. BigB's wings shift. "I won't tell," he repeats. "Just be more careful next time. There's raiders out there tonight and it's a full moon. Take it from someone who used to run with the pack: they're looking for a fight tonight. Glad they didn't get you, though. Glad you're safe." One antennae lifts, tracking vibrations in the air. "Have a nice night, you two."
"We will," they chorus, and BigB trots off towards the tunnel entrance. His wings aren't bulky like Martyn's are. They're made of stretched-thin code without tight-knit bony bits. He wriggles through and disappears. He's off to check on Scott. Cleo lowers their voice to a whisper so thin, Martyn leans his head in to hear. "Mmhm. Great… This is fantastic, Martyn. Now all of New Star will know about us by next week… if not 20k ticks from now."
Martyn turns his head. He doesn't speak, clearly reluctant to say too much when they don't know where his hearing range cuts off. He breathes in soft, flickery huffs. He says nothing.
Neither of them speak for a moment. Martyn holds her shoulder and Cleo leans their head on his, even as their ear prickles against his pixels. She wants to address the "ravager in the chunk border" they're both ignoring here, but Scott and BigB are dangerous people to speak these things around. And Martyn can't look at her. Won't look at her. He fiddles with his hoodie pocket. His tail uncurls against the ground.
"You look flustered," Cleo tells him, just to break the silence. She disengages from his arm and steps back. It's a full moon. She's dropped to sunset hour, her wrist-comm glowing orange, but who knows… He might shriek or lash out as aggro takes control, even if he doesn't eat her. Fine. She's got the stomach for it. "You good?"
Martyn coils his tail like a fist. He knocks it against the bedrock floor. When he turns, his eyes train on hers, like a dog's, though pale blue freckles flip over across his cheeks as pixels rearrange. "Um…"
The word stutters out. Cleo looks at him. Martyn, in all his faults, is the most honest man in the world. Oh, he's a liar. He's only loyal as far as you can reel him in. But for all his fumbling, you can read him like his thoughts are printed on his face. And he knows it, too…
… and doesn't know what to say.
