Since Tasha Suri has confirmed that the world of the Burning Kingdoms trilogy takes elements from all sorts of kingdoms and empires on the Indian subcontinent, that leaves a lot of creative freedom. Still: fabric has to make sense! I learned a lot about saree draping. Hopefully the mermaid drape I went for doesn't look too obviously modern to more knowledgeable readers.

I’m finding it really fun that both couples from My Stubborn so far are dealing with different ways people experience not-so-unrequited love.

Tai and Champ are so in love they practically finish each other’s sentences. They tell each other everything and Champ even waits for Tai to be done in the shower despite the fact that Tai intentionally turned it to be facing the shower. Champ never even seems to consider hanging up and calling back later. They are making out on the couch while watching a movie but they don’t talk about their feelings. I think Champ at least seems convinced that the second he does, it’s all over and everything will fall apart. Tai seems done with the waiting game but it definitely looks like an uphill battle to get Champ on the same page.

Jun is just waking up to his feelings for Sorn. He already knows he’s so fucked. He can’t tell Sorn about his feelings and risk Sorn freaking out and ending what it is they’re doing but he also doesn’t seem like the type who can really hide how he feels and just pretend he isn’t feeling it.

And Sorn well, he’s a complete dumbass. He’s so far removed from his feelings that he doesn’t even seem aware he has them. That he’s behaving like a jealous and clingy boyfriend already. It doesn’t even feel malicious or calculating on his side. It literally feels (at least to me) that he doesn’t know himself as well he thinks he does. If the holding pattern for this type of couple trope is followed, then Sorn isn’t going to realize his feelings until either he or Jun fuck up so badly that he starts freaking out about losing Jun and why that matters to him.

Anyway no real point to prove in this post, just my thoughts. I finally started My Stubborn just in time for it to get good. I love it here. I love this type of trope, especially in the two fonts these couples are in. The love is requited, they’re all just idiots.

I hope Neilman’s trifecta of slow burn supernatural beings adaptations inspires someone to write a wlw couple in this niche. I do NOT consider the ineffable spouses as fitting into cis gender binaries so I don’t see all of these as “cis male pairings” BUT it would be lovely to get a specifically sapphic take on this as well.

three months after finishing it i finally figured out why i found jasmine throne so mid: the romance is boring & the politics is centrist. it was a classic example of good concept boring execution.

mild spoilers ahead!!

ill give malini her points since she wants to be queen and is willing to lie/cheat/manipulate for it but none of that is in active action. her flashbacks are so much more interesting since she's like drugged & then recovering from it for most of the book. priya is not morally gray at all lol. in fact she thinks ashok's rebellion (against the people who essentially are trying to ethnically cleanse their people) is too severe? it kind of put a bad taste in my mouth esp since she's all about freedom for her people the whole book.

the maidservant/exiled princess of the enemy kingdom could've been such an interesting dynamic but my plate is empty there is no food to eat. at most we see them being like "oh pretty woman" and nothing else to indicate any romance or mutual interest beyond the forced proximity. the loss of potential toxic yuri...damn. i don't mind books being more politics heavy rather than romance heavy but when you promise your readers something, you better deliver. oh and like i mentioned the politics was also a bit eh.

all this is not to say the book has no value at all. i think i might still pick up the sequel because i dont entirely mind first books being a set up for an overall story, which this book definitely was. im curious where this mishmash of religion and historical figures (razia sultan what are you doing here) leads to. but if the sequel also sucks i'll give up on the story.

How I feel about this character

Rhaena is my baby, my darling, a character I absolutely adore and the very epitome of quality over quantity, for as much as the little screen time she has, I truly think she’s a well crafted character. What I find most intriguing about Rhaena is that every single odd has been stacked up against her. Not only is she dragonless and less favored by her father because of her lack of a dragon, her mother dies, and as a teenager, she becomes a political bargaining chip not valued for much other than her womb much like majority of other women in Westeros when she’s betrothed to her kid stepbrother, then he dies and she continues to be useless because she never gets a dragon (and her attempts to claim one fail and even LARYS knows exactly how) she ends up having to play nursemaid to her baby half brothers. That resentment simmering underneath the surface for someone who is socialized as a woman, meant to be poised and prim and proper at all times while also upholding the familial duty that’s expected of her is so deeply delicious. I love that in the books, she finds her own way to succeed and that she gets a hatchling rather than a claiming that cements her as the last dragonrider in the world, quite literally the last bit of hope for Targaryen power and it’s only after they have been used for war, all killed in the process, does she get to have a dragon to keep and the joy of it, it’s truly a beautiful optimistic story that fits her character in the show so well that I don’t understand the showrunners want to set aside.

All the people I ship romantically with this character

AEMOND, I feel like I could be more open about it but Rhaena/aemond is quite literally my second favorite hotd ship after Laenyracent variants. Or at least it’s my favorite ship that doesn’t contain any character in that trifecta and isn’t sapphic. I’m pretty sure the reason it isn’t more popular is both team-ism and misogynoir. The parallels between them are too juicy to ignore: both of them pretty defined by being dragonless and feeling somewhat ostracized because of it, their simmering resentment of their families having to consistently put their own wants aside in order to do their duty, this general emo kid feeling of loneliness and feeling that nobody understands them. Their connection is also constant. He kills her betrothed, he kills her mother’s dragon that she wanted to claim, she’s the reason he lost his eye! By both the ends of season 2 they’re both pretty disconnected from their families/political factions in the effort of doing their own thing. Doomed. Delicious. I also really love Rhaena/Addam for simplistic straightforward reasons in that Addam is in a relatively childish cliche fantasy story in which he’s this downtrodden underdog hero, these heroes are often rewarded with princesses in the end, that princess could be Rhaena! I also think they’d get along with their younger siblingsisms and the same sort of thirst for adventure and breaking free from their constraints, just a black love fairy tale! I also think if they’re really going to go down this route of merging her with Nettles (barf) they should be bold enough to twist her dynamic with Daemon and have him come onto her and they should sleep together. Nettles is very much a daughterlovertwinflame all of so many of his issues all at once wrapped up for Daemon, and she would look like his daughters, Rhaena/daemon would touch that especially in this idea if Rhaena wanting her father’s attention and finally having it, obviously this would be deeply fucked up but I would rather this than a straightforward father-daughter story.

My non-romantic OTP for this character

It’s hard to say because she really has no interior life that would include friendships but possibly Jeyne Arryn? I do actually like having the change of Jeyne resenting Rhaena and taking out her issues with Rhaenyra with her as annoying it makes her. However, I think the two forming a working mentorship relationship through that resentment could’ve been really fun to see. There’s also Baela but HOTD has given so little in terms of that relationship that I can’t help but only think of what it looks like in that mind palace.

My unpopular opinion about this character

I think anyone who thinks that she ever would’ve been truly happy with Luke probably don’t see much of her interiority than I do, which is fine, but it feels like an opinion that stems from teamism more than anything. Marrying her kid stepbrother while he receives the claim to her mother’s ancestral seat while she is essentially reduced to his wife IE. his property and the future bearer of his children set to inherit nothing simply just ends her story. I also disagree with anyone who treats it as inherently wholesome in comparison to Lucemond, the shippers just aren’t as weird, but Phoebe is also an adult. This is why they have no chemistry and the one interaction they have comes as big sisterly, it probably is.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon

I think we all know what this is. Lmao. I also think giving her a fully grown dragon to claim in any situation is very bad for her character as not only do you strip away an arc where she could find empowerment from within, this arc just seems more flat and simplistic. We already have an arc in which someone without a dragon just claims one.
