How do The #AvettBrothers decide what kind of record to make?
They don’t.
“We’ve never walked in thinking, ‘Let’s make the rock record,’” Scott Avett told me backstage at Forecastle 2013.
In this throwback interview, Scott and Seth talk about The Carpenter, playing unfinished songs in front of thousands, dodging the major label horror stories, and what it’s like reading a page from your old diary every night on stage.

The Avett Brothers at KEMBA Live!, Columbus, Ohio, Aug. 20, 2024
The Avett Brothers of 2024 are a band in flux. While the seven-piece touring lineup remains the same, the group is supporting a pop-leaning LP and talks from the stage about working, more than playing, for its audience.
So it went that seven of the nine tracks from 2024’s the Avett Brothers made up nearly one-third of the band’s Aug. 20 outdoor gig on an unseasonably chilly, full-moon night in Columbus, Ohio, at a pretty much sold-out KEMBA Live! The musicians were more emotive vocally and physically than in the past, infusing new songs like Never Apart (w/Vocal Prelude)” and “Orion’s Belt” with choreographed moves and making what was once organic joy feel contrived.
During these and other new numbers, Seth and Scott Avett struggled to align their harmonies and Joe Kwon’s cello and Tania Elizabeth’s violin were more adult-contemporary orchestral than down-home Americana as Scott Avett kneeled and slapped hands with audience members and Seth Avett struck rock-star poses under a backdrop of gold praying hands, a disco ball and kaleidoscopic lights.
It was nearly 30 minutes into the two-hour show when flashes of yesterday’s Avetts appeared, when the septet lit into Doc Watson’s instrumental “Black Mountain Rag” and Seth Avett’s electric guitar added a rock element to his bandmates’ country drive.
Scott Avett performed “Murder in the City” solo and acoustic and the Avett brothers and bassist Bob Crawford got folksy around one mic on “I Wish I Was.” Elizabeth continued the unplugged theme with her rambunctious solo spot pairing the instrumental “Le Reel Du Pendu” with the vocal-and-fiddle “Les Barres De La Prison” and earning a raucous response from the audience, a large number of whom began streaming out about halfway through the gig.
The vast majority who stuck around as space opened up in the lawn sang lovingly to the balladic “I and Love and You” and lustily to “Kick Drum Heart.”
The four-song encore continued the contours of the main set, beginning with the mindlessness of Toby Keith’s “As Good as I Once Was” by the Avetts/Crawford trio and ending, as virtually every Avetts show does, with the riveting, deeply thoughtful “No Hard Feelings” by the full band.
But even this magical song - which typically leaves Sound Bites in tears - produced only a lump in the throat, summing up an atypically tepid evening with the Avett Brothers.

a complete analysis on every song in my dead poets society playlist and how they relate to the film
playlist linked at the bottom, yes you have to scroll all the way
the lakes - Taylor Swift
”take me to the lakes where all the poets went to die” is pretty self-explanatory and also i saw an amazing edit to it once and i’ve searched everywhere and i can’t find it 😭😭
This World’s A Giant - Zach Bryan
i just really feel that the phrase “this world’s a giant” was really how todd and the boys felt after neil’s death
THE GREATEST - Billie Eilish
neil’s acting career and how he was with his father. not much else to say
I Wait for You - alex_g_offline
todd was waiting for neil outside the theater. and he will keep waiting for him.
Fable - Gigi Perez
LOVE WAS THE LAW AND RELIGION WAS TAUGHT (self-explanatory) (coughmrperrycoughcough)
Kill For You - Gigi Perez
🤷‍♂️ vibes lmao
not a lot, just forever - Adrienne Lenker
and neil will be waiting forevermore for the life he should have had.
anything - Adrienne Lenker
the first 1-2 verse(s) describe neil’s home life and reality, when really he just wants to be with todd (bonus points for “shining with the sheen of a shotgun”)
We’ll Never Have Sex - Leith Ross
just vibes. anderperry soft love core idk (also ace mittsie headcanon)
I’d Have to Think About It - Leith Ross
neil was really todd’s one true love, and though todd might find love in the future, neil will always be above all else in todd’s heart
Scott Street - Phoebe Bridgers
how i think the poets were after neil died and they graduated :/
Funeral - Phoebe Bridgers
yeah
House Song - Searows
the “empty house” metaphors paralleling the perry house :,{
Motion Sickness - Phoebe Bridgers
emotional motion sickness = getting sick in the snow, “surrender to the sound”: neil surrendered to the sound 🫢
Velvet Ring - Big Thief
vibes vibes vibes, the boys’ love was thicker than a velvet ring :,)
Not Strong Enough - Boygenius
multiple edits, “always an angel, never a god”, “black hole opens in the kitchen” at the perry house when they find neil, a lot of the lyrics show symptoms of a panic attack (todd)
Thérèse - Maya Hawke
vibes, lyrics (vaguely), bonus points for being ethan’s daughter
j’s lullaby (darlin’ i’d wait for you) - Delaney Bailey
todd will be waiting for neil forevermore blah blah blah crying
Tired - beabadoobee
first verse
Your Needs, My Needs - Noah Kahan
read the rant about it here
End Of The World - Searows
“what do you say to a brand new ghost” ??? “i saw the end of the world last night, i ran to you” ?????
Maine - Noah Kahan
the most heart-wrenching song for the most heart-wrenching movie + “and i hope that we make you proud, ‘cause this town’s just an ocean now” !!!! (bonus points for “they’d make me a star”)
Missing Out - Maya Hawke
kinda just the whole idea is SO todd + bonus points for being maya hawke
I And Love And You - The Avett Brothers
again, just the whole idea, especially from todd’s perspective + “your dreams they catch, the world, the cage” bc the cage of the world caught neil’s dreams
Footnote - Conan Gray
rare knarlie moment from a non-knarlie shipper (charlie’s pov)
The View Between Villages - Noah Kahan
just imagining how the boys felt after neil’s death :,( also “i’m 17 again” because they were presumably all seventeen that year. (i only did extended version for the line “left at the graveyard, i’m driving past ghosts, their arms are extended, my eyes start to close”)
Paul Revere (with Gregory Alan Isokov) - Noah Kahan
mainly because i wish neil had the chance to cut it clear and get the FUCK out of there (“if i could leave i would have already left”) i actually don’t know why i did with gregory alan isokov but wtv
New Perspective - Noah Kahan
all about the new perspective neil and mr. keating brought todd and how that will stay with him forever, pretty self-explanatory
Something in the Orange - Zach Bryan
SOMETHING IN THE ORANGE TELLS ME WE’RE NOT DONE (bonus points for orange being used in color theory for this movie, idk ho look it up)
Into Your Arms - The Lemonheads
probably the only happy song in this playlist 💀 this is specifically for the soccer scene when todd jumps into neil’s arms LMAO
True Blue - Boygenius
AND IT FEELS GOOD TO BE KNOWN SO WELL!!! I CAN’T HIDE FROM YOU LIKE I HIDE FROM MYSELF!!!!! because neil can see everything inside of todd, regardless of how todd sees himself
The Ballad of Lucy Gray Baird - from The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes - Rachel Zegler
the first good (and therefore best) dps edit i ever saw, “it’s sooner than late that i’m six feet under” and the rest of the entire end part jesus christ (linked here)
Piano Man - Billy Joel
“i’m sure that i could be a movie star if i could get out of this place”, duh
Bloom - Bonus Track - The Paper Kites
“can i be close to you” 🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹 also vibes
cardigan - Taylor Swift
“when you are young they assume you know nothing” ☹️☹️☹️☹️ + the first and last choruses
Someone New - Hozier
ughhh idk it’s just so the boys coded
Cardinal - Kacey Musgraves
i already talked about this but this is so todd after neil’s death??? especially considering cardinals are native to northeast america AND are not known to migrate most of the time, making the chances of seeing a cardinal very possible at welton in the winter and snow, AND cardinals are known for being a symbol of a deceased loved one watching over you (birds)
Sòlas Ané “Yesterday’s Joy” (Live) - Bunkyo University Wind Orchestra
i just really find this piece to be so musically THERE in dps, especially since some parts remind me of common bagpipe melodies NOT EVEN CONSIDERING THE NAME???? “yesterday’s joy”????? regarding how happy the boys were the night of the play??????? i’m such a band kid idc
Mystery of Love - Sufjan Stevens
yeah
The 1975 - The 1975
literally just for the line “i’m sorry if you’re living and you’re seventeen” 😭😭
You’re Gonna Go Far - Noah Kahan
he was good, he was really good 😶 neil could have gone so far.
Hang In There - Maya Hawke
“he’s gonna get away with it” and “hang on, hang in there” referring to dean nolan and mr. perry?? JESUS MAYA MY HEART (bonus points for maya hawke)
apollo - Faith Zapata
i like the idea that todd thinks of neil as his own apollo, while neil thinks of todd as his 🥹 “i’ll sing you a love song, you’ll read me a poem” 💔💔💔 (me and my 2020 indie pop against the world 🤞)
evelyn - Lexie Carroll
todd talking/praying to neil after he dies (LAWWWD I CAN’T DO IT LAWWWDD)
Fireworks - Mitski
something about todd seeing neil every time it snows ughhhhhh i hate my mind
Pink Skies - Zach Bryan
this song is very mr keating when he had to leave welton?? also “i bet god heard you coming” for neil
Name - The Goo Goo Dolls
lowkey all the lyrics relate to neil’s dreams being crushed under the foot of society and his father but specifically “cause all the dreams you never thought you’d lose got tossed along the way” and “did you lose yourself somewhere out there? did you get to be a star?” (also it’s just such a beautiful song i’ve listened to it on repeat today)
woah okay that took up an hour of my life i hope you enjoy reading all those words!!! i’ll probably update this as i add/remove songs
playlist linked here
ps i didn’t analyze the lakes - original version by taylor swift because it would just be the same notes as the lakes by taylor swift 💀

Stucky Playlist Rambles Part 2: CA:TFA
Previous | Next
Aaaand now for songs that actually take place during Captain America: The First Avenger! Time for even more pining and a shit ton of GRIEF!!! Once again, feel free to listen while you read along, if you want 💕
I Will Follow Him by Peggy March: Anyone ask for a song that basically speedruns Steve's journey to becoming Captain America so he can follow Bucky into the war? No?? Oh, well! Here you go!!
(To be honest, this playlist isn't technically done and I'm always adding new songs to it, so I hope to eventually find other songs that vibe with Steve's potential feelings during this time. But for now!! Speedrun!!!)
Gale Song by The Lumineers and New York by Snow Patrol: Bucky, meanwhile, experiences true and utter loneliness once he goes to war. Sure, he meets Gabe and Dugan and they get along well, but it's not nearly enough. So, he uses the knowledge that Steve is nice and safe at home to get through. Still, if he ever thought that his regret for letting Steve's love go was strong before, he's well and truly being suffocated by it now.
Army Dreamers by Kate Bush: Like most men during war, Bucky ends up being reduced to a scared kid wanting his ma once he's initially captured by Hydra. After being imprisoned, he just keeps thinking of her and he becomes deathly afraid of never seeing her again. Would Winnifred Barnes be proud of her boy, if she saw him like this?
Machine Gun by Portishead: Zola begins experimenting on Bucky.
Somebody That I Used To Know by Elliot Smith: Upon being reunited with Steve, Bucky experiences a ton of complicated emotions about how different he is. He's big, strong, fast, and healthy and he doesn't need Bucky anymore.
I know you don't think you did me wrong / And I can't stay this mad for long / Keeping a hold of what you just let go / You're just somebody that I used to know
Bucky tries not to feel angry at Steve for this--he's finally healthy, for God's sake--but he just misses his little guy. He's right fucking here and he misses him.
Boats & Birds by Gregory and the Hawk: Similar feelings to last song, but more so Bucky bottling up his feelings about 'Captain America'. Despite how much it hurts, Bucky knows he'll always support Steve. Hell, even if Steve were to leave him behind, he would still support him.
Just leave me your stardust to remember you by
At the end of the day, so long as Bucky gets to keep the memories of the moments he shared with Steve, that'd be more than enough.
I Will Follow by U2: Steve asks Bucky if he will follow Captain America into the jaws of death. Bucky says he'll follow the fellow guy from Brooklyn who was too dumb not to run away from a fight. So long as Steve needs him, Bucky will always follow.
The Drunkard Song (There is a Tavern In the Town) by Rudy Vallee: Bucky experiences heartbreak in a tavern.
Heartaches by Al Bowlly: A part of Bucky had always wished that he and Steve could potentially get back together someday. Maybe after they both survived this awful war and were back home in Brooklyn. He wouldn't give a damn about any danger this time. He'd sing his love for Steve to the rooftops, if that's what it took for him to deserve Steve again. But with Peggy Carter present...Bucky becomes certain that he's just lost whatever chance he might've had forever.
Mr. Brightside by The Killers and Dancing On My Own by Calum Scott: Bucky's jealousy and heartbreak take form in awful and vivid thoughts of Steve and Peggy together.
I And Love And You by The Avett Brothers: Bucky accepts that, even though he may still be in love with him, Steve has moved on and he loves Peggy now.
Angel with a Shotgun by The Cab: Steve and Bucky finally begin to fight in the war together. Bucky quickly finds himself throwing a lot of himself away in order to keep Steve safe and he can't bring himself to care. He snipes unsuspecting soldiers without hesitation. Any guilt he might have felt vanishes with the knowledge that it's all for Steve. Steve even calls him his guardian angel on more than one occasion and Bucky knows that he's the furthest thing from.
die for by Maggie Lindermann: Steve, meanwhile, experiences similar emotions as Bucky. He knows he's Captain America and is being used as hope for the nation and the Allies as a whole, but he knows that, when it really comes down to it, he's not living to keep hope alive. He's fighting for the man beside him and, if the time ever comes, he's more than willing to die for him.
Beautiful James by Placebo: Eventually, however, Steve begins to realize that Bucky is undeniably different in a way that is more than just the war and what he went through with Zola. Sure, Steve wasn't present to witness how he fought before that, but he's almost too fast and strong. His shots are always too perfect. He moves like an entirely different person than the boy he grew up with in Brooklyn. Steve wants to say something, but he's so worried about harming Bucky in the process. So, he doesn't say anything, even though he knows that he might have to at some point.
Reliable Narrator by Chase Petra: At some point during the war, I imagine Steve and Bucky to have an argument after a brief skirmish where Bucky gets hurt and he just kinda...blows up at Steve. He's spending all this time trying so hard to keep up appearances and act like he hasn't changed. (Except he just got shot during that skirmish and his bullet wound fucking healed in the matter of a few minutes.) So in the midst of his panic at being faced the reality of being different, he just yells at Steve about how different he is, and how he should've stayed safe and at home. He just falls a part a bit, honestly.
Did you forget that I am not a pacifist / A scar well earned from a love that was well worth it / Did you forget
Steve also yells a bit, saying that no matter how Bucky feels about it, he'd do it all over again and again just to save him.
Body to Flame by Lucy Dacus: Ultimately, the pair simmer down and are able to actually talk their feelings out a bit. Bucky ends up accepting Steve as he is and even seeing the good in it. But, at the same time, he still doesn't tell Steve about how he's changed now, too. He's just too horrified by it.
Sparks by Coldplay: During their talk, Steve also confesses that all of his ailments were fixed thanks to the serum and he's not 'sick' anymore. Bucky immediately takes this to mean that Steve has been cured of his queerness. It was considered an illness at the time, so it's a logical conclusion for him to make. So, even more heartbroken than before--because, fuck, this just confirms all his fears--, Bucky insists that he knows what they had was wrong and Steve won't have to worry about him trying anything. But...
Always by The Ink Spots: Steve confesses that the serum did not change that part about him. His queerness never made him sick. Bucky isn't sick. They were never sick. And Bucky... Bucky admits he still loves Steve by kissing him and Steve kisses him in return.
Tightrope from The Greatest Showman: They're protecting each other now and no longer in a self sacrificial way. But together. 💕
Here's a Health to the Company by The Longest Johns: A night of respite shared with the Howlies, all of them singing their desires to survive the war.
Here's a health to the dear lass that I love so well / For her style and her beauty sure none can excel / There's a smile on her countenance as she sits on my knee / There's no man in this wide world as happy as me
Bucky casually sings about his 'girl back home', practically staring at Steve the whole time. Steve may or may not become a blushing mess. Who's to say.
Over the Rainbow from the Wizard of Oz: Bucky dreaming about being somewhere safe, beyond the war, despite all of the horrible things he's done.
(Side note, but I also headcanon the Wizard of Oz to be Bucky's favorite movie, so he'd be humming this song a lot during the war when he needs it most.)
(There'll be Bluebirds Over) The White Cliffs of Dover by Vera Lynn: Steve confirming to Bucky that the safety he craves is attainable and that he deserves every bit of it. When they get back to Brooklyn, they'll love and laugh and live in peace. The world will heal. Bucky will be able to sleep again. They just have to make it through the rest of this war.
Between the Wars by Allman Brown: They're about to embark on their mission to capture Zola in the Alps. Steve finally gets the courage to bite the bullet and ask Bucky about what exactly happened to him in Azzano. Bucky, however, quickly becomes lost in the memories of what he endured and, when he finally comes back to himself, he says he's just not ready to talk about. Still, he tells Steve that he'll try to be after the mission. After they get Zola.
Happy by Mitski: The train.
Blood Upon the Risers: Bucky falls.
I'll Never Smile Again by Frank Sinatra, Oh Why by Phil Spector, Cold by Jeff Williams, and The Most Savage Joke by Sondre Lerche: Steve mourning.
Mr Loverman by Ricky Montgomery: Steve deciding to take down Hydra.
I'm headed straight for the floor / The alcohol's served its tour / And it's headed straight for my skin / Leaving me daft and dim
I just think these lyrics go really nice with that scene where Steve's trying to get drunk, but it just doesn't work. But then his grief for Bucky is so strong that he might as well be drunk with how reckless he becomes afterwards.
Like You by Evanescence: Steve's self-sacrificial tendencies come back full force. He just doesn't care anymore. He doesn't want to live in a world without Bucky. The only thing keeping him going now is the thought of taking down Hydra. Once he does that... Once he does that, he can join Bucky.
Oblivion by M83: Steve begins having dreams of Bucky during the little amount of time after the train. He sees him fall over and over and over again. Sometimes he screams. Sometimes he doesn't make a sound. Sometimes he beckons for Steve to join him. Steve always wakes wishing that he had.
In a Week by Hozier: Steve crashes the Valkyrie and, for the first time since that mission in the Alps, he feels peace. He's going to see Bucky again. That's all that matters as the ice and water race to meet him.
Laughter Lines by Bastille: Not really from either of the boy's POV, but it certainly is fitting for them, considering that the war is merely the beginning of their story.
"I'll see you in the future when we're older / And we are full of stories to be told / Cross my heart and hope to die / I'll see you with your laughter lines"
If you're reading this, hello! :)

Song Review: The Avett Brothers - “Country Kid”
The Avett Brothers look back on “Country Kid,” singing of fire ants, Winnie the Pooh, hiding smokes from adults, making out with trailer-park girls and the like.
The second single from the Avett Brothers (May 17) is a formulaic pop song outfitted with banjo and fiddle to provide titular bonafides as the Brothers extoll rural vices and virtues:
Then I grew up and hit the city/but the skyscrapers never get me/I fly above ’em all the time, straight through cloud nine/flowing fast like the Mississippi
“Country Kid” is generic and leans toward bro-country; lacking the elements that make the Avetts’ best work so irresistible. It is, however, much stronger than the preceding “Love of a Girl.”
