Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
Take a closer look at a giant barnicle, and you may find something surprising inside! The grunt sculpin spends most of its time hiding in empty barnacle shells-- so much so that it's evolved specifically to blend in with its surroundings so they're almost invisible to predators.

Grunt sculpins, the disguise champions of the underwater realm, blend into their rocky habitats, taking shelter in vacant barnacle shells, and execute the “sculpin shuffle” as they move, hop, or crawl over rocks.

On a wave-battered rock in the northern Pacific Ocean, a fish called the sculpin grips the surface firmly to maintain stability in its harsh environment. Unlike sea urchins, which use their glue-secreting tube feet to adhere to their surroundings, sculpins manage to grip without a specialized adhesive organ like tube feet or the suction cups of octopuses. So, why is this significant, and why are scientists so keen to understand it? Marine organisms thriving in high-energy environments serve as excellent natural models for designing more efficient and effective human-engineered devices, such as robots, grippers and adhesives. Improved adhesives could have wide-ranging impacts, from enhancing medical devices to creating tires with better road grip.

Daily fish fact #843
Deep-water sculpins!
Tumblr media
It is a subfamily of sculpins that is entirely endemic to Lake Baikal, the deepest lake in the world. Many species are among the deepest-living freshwater fish in the world, descending down to 1 600 meters which is nearly the depth of Lake Baikal itself! Common adaptations in these sculpins include reduced eyes and an enhanced lateral line system directly on the skin, which helps them feel movement and pressure changes in the water.

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
The blobfish, or sculpins, have a lot of adaptations to help them survive at the bottom of the ocean; most notable is the lack of a swim bladder-- an air-filled sack that other fish use to help them swim. Instead, sculpins have a jelly-like layer of fat underneath their skin which makes them slightly less dense than the water around them and allows them to bob along the ocean floor with minimal effort. Turns out being fat and lazy has its advantages!

"I found an extra sweet treat for you, Fossil Coral Cookie!"
"Oh, how sweet of you. It's only fair that we share the treat you worked so hard for."
A lil piece with Tadpole Sculpin Cookie and Fossil Coral Cookie! The colony tends to give Fossil Coral Cookie the best stuff due to her being their protector, though she always insists on sharing it all.
