I know you draw fanart, but do you only draw fanart or are there other things? And regarding fanart, are there fandoms other than Bleach you draw for? (And why those) Do you stick to few characters or does it rotate? (+ anything else along those lines that may be relevant in explaining what you draw) If you only draw fanart, any particular thing that draws you to it?

Fanart is definitely 99% of what I draw. I try to do other stuff, but I really have to force myself to do it. Frankly, I'm not inspired by anything other than whatever fandom I'm currently obsessing over. This makes me sounds like a downer, but real life - especially, and perhaps specifically, life as a transgender person in the USA - is stressful and depressing. And I make art to escape those feelings. I've made art for various fandoms over the years, but not many. Final Fantasy 7 lasted me from my teens well into my mid 20's, then it was Naruto for the next decade, then finally Bleach. As for Bleach itself, there's really just one character I draw a lot, as you'll see (or already saw?) when it's shown. I'm always drawn to villains, like it's been a constant since I was a little kid. I especially like the mad scientist archetype, which is definitely why Mayuri Kurotsuchi became the center of my obsessions however many years ago. Although the way he looks was… um… quite a bit of a barrier at first. He is hard to draw:/ but practice helps. Maybe part of the reason I've kept at it is because I like the challenge.

Do you only draw digitally (+ if not, what other mediums do you use, + do you make other types of art besides drawing?)

No, digital art just happens to be the easiest. I can't tell you how many times I've messed up a traditional art in recent years, and found myself thinking 'oh just press ctrl plus z! (undo).' Other than digital, I do a lot of pencil sketching, pen and ink, and pen/marker. I also paint, knit, sew, and am learning how to silk screen.

How and when did you get into art? Did your relationship to art change over time?

I've been making art for as long as I can remember. Unfortunately, I was labeled as a 'gifted kid' in school, especially in regards to art, and it caused me to become complacent with my skill level in my adulthood. I didn't draw enough to improve - like I was still drawing at my high school level in my 30's - and was just… super frustrated and mad at myself. But I got sober in 2019, and that had been my biggest barrier from improving. In the years since, I've been making as much art as possible, trying to make up for lost time, and I think I've improved a lot! There will always be artists whose skill feels high above your own - I've heard that never changes, no matter how good you get - so I do my best to be happy with my progress. Jealousy is the mind-killer sdfkjsdflk (altered Dune quote, you don't have to put that in)

Is your irl job related to art or not? Why/why not, if there's a reason

Nope, I've been in culinary all my life - was a chef for many years and now I'm a baker. There are certainly artistic elements to both professions, but it definitely isn't at the forefront of the work (unless you're a decorative baker or something, which I'm not.) I used to wish I could do art as my job, but I've changed my mind in recent years. I've had a taste of monetizing my art with commissions, and found that I'm really not a self-motivated person once money gets involved. Commissions are fine, especially because I don't rely on the money, but I get really panicked at the mere prospect of making my art into a product I can sell. It would definitely defeat my purpose in doing it, which is to relieve stress and have fun.

Process

Any particular inspirations visual style-wise, if you're able to pinpoint them?

Oh boy, I've had a ton of inspirations over the years. Most of them are mangaka. Otomo Katsuhiro is probably the biggest one, as his skill is just unfathomable to me. Akira is an incredible work of art - it's been my favorite movie since I initially saw it as a VERY frightened yet enthralled 12 year old, and the manga is mind boggling in its length and detail. Fun fact: Otomo Katsuhiro's biggest inspiration is Mobius - who, if I'm remembering right, is (or was) a French artist. Other inspirations of mine include Junji Ito, Tite Kubo (of course haha), and Kentaro Miura.

What would you say stands out most about your visual style?

Pen and ink has been my longest-standing medium, and the one I have the most confidence in, and I've always tried to emulate somewhat of a manga style to my art. So I usually put in a fair bit of detailed line work, which hopefully makes it stand out. The way I draw characters has settled into something of a consistent style as well - though I'm definitely still learning and altering as I go. I think my obsessive eye for detail is probably a stand-out feature as well, though I really wish I could loosen up a bit sometimes.

Any patterns in the themes you explore?

I've always been drawn to dark themes. Body horror is a big favorite of mine, and I really aspire to draw something truly unsettling one of these days. Being transgender is a big factor in this - or maybe I'm just morbid? A combination? Who knows. Horror isn't all I draw, of course - I like making art that is sexy and pretty to look at, too. But horror is the most interesting to me.

Do you start out with an idea and draw it, or do you let the pen guide you? How much of a drawing do you generally plan in advance?

Most of my big art pieces were planned, and probably went through some rough concept drafts beforehand. Sometimes I get lucky, though, and a random sketch turns into something finished. I have a lot of character arts - just a pose with little to no background - that start that way.

What are the usual steps when you create something?

I always start with a sketch. For digital art, the sketch is usually digital too, though I sometimes take a photo of a pencil or pen sketch and start from there. Linework generally comes next, then the real challenge for me is the coloring, shading etc. I never went to art school - I'm self-taught, using an old version of Paint Tool Sai that's probably quite basic compared to other programs. And my methods have changed wildly over the years as I've learned new tricks and shortcuts. Like the reason I said linework 'generally' comes next is because I've strayed from that a few times recently. The only consistency in my digital art is sooooo many layers lmao

What drives you to create?

Making art is literally my raison d'etre, which sounds overly serious, but it's true. My life's had some serious ups and downs, but I keep going because I want to keep creating and improving. Being primarily a fandom artist - and of a character who's extremely unpopular - means that my art has a very small audience, but that doesn't particularly matter to me. I just want a few people to see it and enjoy it, and I want to keep doing that for as long as I can! I think there doesn't have to be a good reason to keep going… there doesn't always need to even be a reason. But art is my reason, and as long as I can hold a pen, I'll keep making it.

I wanna know more about Sen! Assuming Yel is still the Inquisitor in her timeline, how’d she end up with her at Skyhold? What does she think of the Inquisition? So, Sen is part of clan Lavellan, but only very loosely related to Yel in the sense that everyone in the clan probably shares some common ancestry. She’s a little younger than Yel. They weren’t exceptionally close, but they got along well growing up.

Sen’s always been a bit of a floater, leaving the clan for a few months at a time for work, returning to share her spoils and news from areas a little further removed from the clan’s position. Sen wasn’t around when Ayelet was sent south and she heard all sorts of things about the Inquisition while seeking work in Kirkwall but wasn’t overly curious until the name Lavellan was dropped. She finished a short clean up stint and went south to sate her curiosity.

By that time, the fledging Inquisition had arrived at Skyhold. Her reunion with Yel is a happy one and Sen offers to stick around and help if she can.

She thinks the Inquisition is doing good work and enjoys keeping the smallfolk safe! Sen’s never been one for leadership - she does her part on the sidelines and wants no part of the acclaim. Her duties include helping the scouts patrol regions before Yel and team move in, guarding protected settlements, and occasionally working with the Chargers. She’s underprepared for actual war. Her swordsmanship has never been top notch but she tries her best; she may come out of fights with a scrape or two, but she comes out alive. The Chargers help her hone her skills.

She’s not committed to the cause like most others. She doesn’t see her childhood friend as this fantastic savior, it’s impossible for her to look at Ayelet like that when she’s seen her at seventeen, piss drunk and crying because some girl in the next clan over just wanted to be friends. But she cares about the work and she believes in Yel’s desire to make the world better. Besides, most of the coin she brought in went back to the clan, and with the Inquisition’s coffers, they would be well funded now. For the moment, Asenath is happy where she is.

TG movie comments

So last night I dragged along my cousin (who knows absolutely nothing about TG) to watch the live action movie and I just wanted to ramble on about a few things, including some of my cousin’s comments from someone who isn’t already a fan :)

I absolutely loved the movie! There were so many little details for manga readers to pick up on, but they weren’t presented in a way which would detract from the experience of someone who was new to the series. My cousin really liked it too, enough that she wanted to watch the anime afterwards to see how it compared, so I guess it hit the goal of what a live action should do; appease established fans of the story and draw in new viewers to seek out the manga/anime to get more of the story!

The casting was amazing all round. When we watched the anime, and could compare the characters between the two mediums, Cousin mentioned how spot on they were. Even flipping through my manga to a page with Yomo, she picked him out which i was surprised about considering the different hair colour and age. I think it’s probably because the actor was really spot on with Yomo’s -__- expression!

Kaneki on the date with Rize was SO AWKWARD, painfully so. I was getting so much secondhand embarrassment from him :’D Comparing to the anime, Cousin mentioned that too- how he wasn’t as awkward in there. It was cute though! I get the feeling to someone who doesn’t know his character, he would have come across as a bit creepy rather than endearing though hahaha

There were a few scenes which were cut out/changed for necessity but so many small details were kept the same (insignificant things like Kaneki guzzling milk out his fridge which I was oddly touched that it was kept in haha) 

Probably one of the only things, they cut out Kaneki calling Touka a monster after he asked for her help in the alleyway which I thought kind of diluted down her reason for why she was so salty at him. But at the same time, they did add a few gentler moments from Touka to balance it out (gotta get that tsun to dere ratio just right ;D)

Like I had suspected from one of the stills, Touka scooped out a handful of cake from the garbage and threw it at Kaneki during her “tell me, what does cake taste like?” spiel and it made me cackle thinking of the cake throwback at their wedding

HAJIME MADE A CAMEO AND I WANTED TO SEND HIM TO TIME OUT IMMEDIATELY

Ryouko’s death was so sad, and just before the end, they made everything very still and silent as she turned to Hinami and locked eyes with her

Like the anime, the movie used Kaneki hallucinating Rize to show his inner conflict. He’d look in the mirror and see her reflection instead- it was really cool.

Funny Kaneki and Touka moment; when Yoshimura first took Kaneki into Anteiku and served him coffee, there was a really touching moment when Kaneki realised he could drink it and he started crying, there was emotional music that tugged at your heart strings.... and then Touka ruined it with “Don’t cry, dumbass” TOUKA PLZ. In the last scene of the movie, everyone was back to working at Anteiku- peaceful and happy- and Kaneki got emotional again and started getting teary. Touka again: “Don’t cry dumbass” but this time with a little smirk and Kaneki smiled too. It was real cute.

This scene was done spot on with her kagune and everything- I got so emotional

That’s not the only scene that was almost a direct adaptation of the manga. They tended to do that in more important moments- have a camera shot directly out of the manga

Seeing the “Hinami, I think your Mother was trying to tell you to live” part was also sad considering whats going on in the manga right now- probably the worst week to be having Hinami feels in the movie ToT

The movie made Kusaba real cute and likable. His actor was a perfect fit. It worked well to make you invested in his character and make an impact with his death.

The training montage with Touka and Kaneki was AMAZING. It switched back and forth between them fighting in the dark dirty underground and Amon training in the pristine CCG facilities. In one part, Kaneki finally got a hit on Touka and went over to her like “I’m sorry Touka-chan!!! are you--” at which point she got him back with a kick :’D 

Hide was cute af, no surprises- his energy was a welcome contrast to Kaneki’s quietness

Nishiki was GREAT too, I don’t know what sorcery it is but Nishiki is spot on in every single adaptation

There was the COOLEST moment after Kaneki was about to eat Hide- Touka and Yomo showed up and they were so badass standing there at the door and activating their kakugan at the same time

Another cute moment, Hinami asked Touka what a word in her book was and she had a look like “ahhhhh..ummmm...” then nodded Kaneki to help her instead. When he explained, Touka reckons “yes that’s what it is” to which SAVAGE Hina replies with “you didn’t know it either”. Touka got mad at Kaneki for laughing before joining in with the giggles and it was cute af

Sen Takatsuki’s books were SO COOL, the covers were spot on and Kaneki had them all in a stack in his room

At one stage, when Kaneki started hallucinating Rize, the camera panned up to the ceiling with the shadow of a centipede and its scuttling legs. It was a nod to Kafka’s Metamorphosis which was one of those cool details that were there for manga readers. 

Speaking of Rize- the scene where she attacks him on their date was creepy af, it was good shit

After Mado was killed, they had the scene with Touka leaning on Kaneki and Yomo piggybacking Hinami and it was very nostalgic ToT

It was super gory- I like gore but I’m not very good at it so both me and my cousin were both turning our heads away all the time :’D I’d sneak a peek at her sometimes and see the most horrified look on her face, it was hilarious. A few times I knew something was coming up so I’d cover her eyes for her hahaha SO MUCH BLOOD HOLY SHIT like ... everywhere

Hinami asked Kaneki about the quote “the bird fights its way out of the egg, the egg is the world, who would be born must first destroy a world” and he demonstrated by cracking an egg and it was cute af- the relationship between Kaneki and Hinami was really sweet

An interesting change was when Touka wanted to go kill the investigators to protect Hinami- instead of Yoshimura being against it, Yomo stopped her and told her off but let her go off after a nod from Yoshimura. It made it seem like he was ok with what she was doing.

Can it get any more crazy? Well, that is how we are! I always remembered the lines from ’To Sir with Love" whenever I sat down to pen some wishes for you. And now some fans have made it true. We (fans) could not write across the sky, but did even better and named a star after you!

Kunal Karan Kapoor’s biggest strength is his ability to express the inexpressible.

Kunal has portrayed a variety of characters over the years.The best part is that he has portrayed each of them differently every Single time.I love that Kunal gives his characters their own personality,their own individual emotions and habits and thought patterns;small details and shades that make them unique and unforgettable.What I love about Kunal Karan Kapoor is that he always challenges himself.He has a passion for the art.He has the intensity of an actor.He perceives the nuances of a character and understands how to project it,how to reflect it in his performance.And I admire and value that.For me,true talent is when an actor changes and grows with his character and Kunal Karan Kapoor has done that with the character of Yudi and Mohan.I love it when a character starts on one note and ends on a different.I also love Kunal Karan Kapoor’s comic timing,he always keeps the right balance,never crossing the line between slapstick and natural humour.

Rajani was his first show…at a very young age Kunal Karan Kapoor appeared as a child artist in the show Rajani.Kunal Karan Kapoor portrayed a sick child in a hospital.

In Remix Kunal played a stammering introvert character Varun,who blames himself for his brother’s death and so does his mother.He blocks everyone out of his life and somehow punishes himself because he has some kind of self hate.The self hate has a lot to do about him feeling guilty,not loved, not good enough in his parents eyes.The interesting with Varun’s character was his relationship with his parents.The sibling comparison,trying to live up to his parents expectation and not being good enough.The feeling that you are a burden and that your parents do not understand you.What also was great about Varun’s character was,that you follow Varun from the loner and insecure kid,to the kid trying to be cool and be accepted,then the kid who are lost and who rebel,then in the end the kid who find a balance and kind of find his place.

In Left right left,Yudi was a young,nervous,dramatic,energetic and restless boy.Yudi was a character many people could relate to.That feeling of being invisible,bullied,and constantly be pressured by your peers.The feeling that you have to prove your worth,not only to people around you,but yourself as well.The feeling that you don’t fit in and you keep trying to leave a mark, a footprint,because you want to be remembered as someone who mattered,as someone who did something good.

Madonna’s character happened because one of the creative saw Kunal Karan Kapoor with friends having fun on his birthday…trying out the red dresses.Even though episodes with Kunal Karan Kapoor as Madonna was fun and was about Yudi’s revenge and his way to prove,that he could get into the party without Huda’s help.But what it also showed us was how it is to be an outcast…who is trying to fit in.Someone who can not find a partner,but really want to go to the party.It was about students who always are in the punchline for a joke,but before someone else make a joke of them…they make a joke of themselves.Defence mechanism or a way to control the situation their way.

In Meet mila de rabba,Kunal Karan Kapoor played the character Monty.Monty is a spoiled kid who has been studying outside India.It was a grey character and had a lot of potential.Again Kunal Karan Kapoor would with one look or the way he would say a line,make you believe that Monty is deep down a good boy but misunderstood. Monty is compared to his big brother and kind of resent him for it,even though he loves his brother a lot.There was a nice chemistry between Monty and his Mom. I would love to have seen some intense scenes between him and Raza Murad who played his father.

Kunal’s next show was Maayka.His character Sukhi was a ‘Robin Hood’.It was a light,sweet and feel good character.The love story between Sukhi and Tina was sweet.Fans loved him in that avatar…simple and cute.His dialogue delivery was brilliant.

His character Angad in Mann ki awaaz Pratigya is this irritating, manipulating, lost, bigra hua boy who gets slapped and feels humiliated by Pratigya and wants to take revenge.Angad includes another gunda Krishna in the mix for help,teaching her a lesson.The only thing Angad wants is his revenge over Pratigya and Krishna for humiliating him in public.Angad character got popular and the makers keep bringing Angad back.The sad thing is just that it was the same revenge circle and they did not give Kunal enough screen time or any change in the script,for him to make the character grow and change.Kunal Karan Kapoor’s dialogue delivery is brilliant and you will just love the “kahawat in them.Even though he did not have much screen time and his character was kind of used…he did a fantastic job.His dialogues were difficult and he said them without sounding dry.He made it more visual and that made it entertaining because you kind of saw the images…just amazing!Love the thought he had behind his character Angad,that he pictured himself as Mara…very interesting.
