ThinkPad X1 Fold review: Lenovo's foldable PC is nowhere near ready

Lenovo is no stranger to making weird things. In 2016, the company gave us the first dual-screen hybrid with the Yoga Book that was part color tablet, part e-ink touchscreen keyboard / drawing pad. It followed that up with a second-generation in 2018, but also gave us things like tablets with fold-out kickstands and laptops with speakers built into the hinge or an e-ink screen on the lid. Not to mention that Lenovo pioneered the 360-degree hinge system and was the first to announce a 5G laptop with Qualcomm in 2019.

So it shouldn’t be surprising that the company is the first to deliver a foldable tablet PC that you can actually buy. We saw a prototype of the ThinkPad X1 Fold last year and got all the specs at CES 2020, and now it’s finally hitting shelves for $2,600 to start. For that price, you’re not just getting a large foldable phone. In addition to the fact that it runs Windows, the 13.3-inch X1 Fold also acts as a mini laptop when it’s folded halfway and you add Lenovo’s companion keyboard. If it was well-executed, Lenovo’s first foldable PC could have been better than a regular laptop, and not simply jumping on a hot trend. The problem with the X1 Fold, though, is that the execution needs work.

Summary

The ThinkPad X1 Fold is an impressive piece of technology that sorely needs better execution. It’s laudable that Lenovo was able to make a 13.3-inch OLED tablet that can bend, but on its own the $2,600 Fold is a seriously expensive Windows tablet. Throw in the $230 keyboard that fits neatly between the screen’s two halves for a faux laptop mode and you get a neat mini machine that’s only good for quick emails and tweets. But few, if any, people should spend nearly $3,000 to buy the X1 Fold when any Surface tablet would serve you far better.

Like the Surface Duo I reviewed earlier this year, the X1 Fold is a unique device. Yes, it's a big foldable and we've seen and tested a few foldable phones by now so the technology doesn't feel quite as novel. But Lenovo's device is the first that's this large and runs Windows, making it basically a foldable Surface tablet. Because of its flexible screen and sturdy hinge, the X1 Fold can be used in a number of orientations similar to the Surface Duo and the Galaxy Z Fold 2, like book or laptop. But because the hinge only opens to 180 degrees, you won't be able to rotate it all the way over into a tent mode.

As a tablet or book

For the $2,600 starting price, you'll only get the X1 Fold itself without a keyboard or stylus, meaning you’ll largely be using it as a tablet or "book". It's a serviceable device and is surprisingly well made. I like the leather cover that not only makes this feel like a real (if hefty) notebook, but also adds a touch of class. On the top bezel sits a 5-megapixel webcam, while power and volume buttons line the right edge. There's also a pair of USB-C ports, one on the left side and the other on the bottom.

With a 13.3-inch screen the Fold is quite large for a tablet, and it certainly feels chunkier than the iPad Pro or Samsung's Galaxy Tab S7+. It weighs 2.2 pounds and has a 11.5mm profile, and when folded it's about 24mm thick. All that heft makes this difficult to maneuver with one hand, and I struggled to open the Fold while holding a camera with my other hand.

When you close the X1 Fold, it magnetically snaps shut and there's a tiny gap near the hinge. That comes in handy when you need some leverage to pry the device open, because the magnets holding it together are quite strong. Once you get the screen moving though, the hinge springs open. It starts getting more resistant when you push it beyond a 25 degree angle and you can bend the screen so it's half closed and stays that way.

In this orientation, you can hold the X1 Fold as if it were a book and run two apps side by side to drag and drop between them or just to keep an eye on Twitter while watching YouTube. Or you could also set the Fold up on the kickstand built into its leather case and have a second screen or just to watch Netflix on. The 2K OLED screen here is bright and colorful, and although there is a small crease in the middle, it’s not very obvious… when the screen is flat at least. When the display is bent though, the dent in the middle is significantly brighter than the rest of the panel, and makes viewing anything full screen a bit jarring.

My main frustration with using the Fold as a tablet is that Windows is still an atrocious touch-based operating system. We’ve known this for a long time -- Microsoft’s many public embarrassments with mobile versions of Windows have proven this point time and time again.

Honestly, it was downright infuriating to use Tablet Mode on the X1 Fold, especially when I just wanted to go back to the desktop to find a file I saved. Trying to drag and drop windows didn’t behave the way I expected it to, not to mention Microsoft’s app store is pitifully bare compared to Apple and Google’s options. There still isn’t an official Kindle app, for example.

Obviously book mode is best for reading (or it would be if there was a real Kindle app). But it’s also pretty good for writing and taking notes. Lenovo’s $100 pen is responsive and smooth, though I prefer Microsoft or Samsung’s options.

To its credit, Lenovo tried to make it easier to use the Fold in Book mode by adding its own mode-switching software. By tapping an icon in the system indicator tray, you can quickly expand an app to take up the whole screen or snap two apps side by side. This did make it easier to launch, say, YouTube and Twitter next to each other, but aside from a few very niche scenarios I struggled to find a reason to actually use book mode.

As a mini laptop

Throw in Lenovo’s $230 companion keyboard, though, and the X1 Fold presents a far more compelling case (if you forget about the price). Of course, you can use your own keyboard, but the company’s version not only fits perfectly in the gap between the two halves of the screen and magnetically stays in place, but also charges wirelessly when it’s stowed in the closed tablet.

With this setup, you get a cute little mini laptop with a 7-inch-ish screen that’s perfect for getting work done when you’re in a tight space. The buttons on this understandably small keyboard offer an impressive amount of travel and space, all things considered.

But tradeoffs had to be made to squeeze all those keys onto something this small, so some buttons like the dash and equal signs at the end of the row of number keys had to be sacrificed. It also had to move the apostrophe from where it normally is next to the Enter key to slightly higher and farther to the right, between the Backspace and Enter instead. These changes took a bit of adjusting to and made typing a little awkward. It’s fine for a quick email or tweet, but I wouldn’t want to type on this for hours.

I do appreciate that Lenovo included a trackpad on the keyboard, even if it is pretty small at 3 inches wide and 1.5 inches tall. While it isn’t the most responsive touchpad around, I was thankful for a way to use the cursor on Windows, as well as multi-finger gestures like swiping to switch between apps. Surprisingly, I never felt like it was too cramped.

Otherwise using the X1 Fold as a mini laptop was… fine. Because you’re reduced to using a 7-inch screen in this mode, you can only get about three app icons on the taskbar at once unless you reduce the OS’s font and icon size. Doing that on a screen this small makes any text quite hard to read. And don’t even think about running two windows side by side -- they’ll barely fit or be so small that you’ll need to scroll forever to see everything.

Performance and battery life

The X1 Fold uses an Intel Lakefield Core i5 processor with Intel’s “Hybrid technology,” which the chip maker says is “engineered for mobile performance.” It uses architecture similar to ARM’s big.Little design, relegating less demanding tasks to lower-power Atom cores and tapping bigger cores for tougher processes. In general, the Fold kept up with my needs, and the few hiccups I came across seemed more to do with glitchy software than a slow processor. For example, sometimes Lenovo’s mode switching tool wouldn’t work, and instead of letting me choose the window I wanted open on either half of the display, it would just show two random apps I had open. Switching between landscape and portrait modes would bring up all the windows I had open, for example, and I often had to wait for webpages to expand and fill the whole screen when I maximized them.

These were mostly issues that had to do with switching between modes -- when I stayed in either tablet or laptop orientations, the device generally kept pace. Granted, I didn’t do anything too demanding like editing video, but for most of my day to day workflow the machine held up.

On our video rundown test, the X1 Fold clocked an impressive 13 hours and 30 minutes, which beats the Galaxy Tab S7+, the Surface Pro 7 and the iPad Pro 12.9. In real-world use, it generally lasts all day in tablet mode, though I found that using the keyboard seemed to drain the battery a bit more quickly. There’s also the option of getting a 5G-capable model of the X1 Fold, by the way, which I expect will sap energy even more.

Wrap-up

I’m having a hard time recommending anyone buy the X1 Fold. I don’t want to diminish Lenovo’s achievement here -- it’s impressive that the company managed to make a foldable PC that it’s ready to roll out to the public. But as is the case with many first-gen products, the X1 Fold is an expensive experiment. If you buy this, know that you’re basically paying to be a beta tester. There are plenty of quirks to work out. While I’m excited to see companies innovate, the ThinkPad X1 Fold’s exorbitant price and lack of real benefits keep me from endorsing it. If you need a laptop-tablet hybrid that runs Windows and can fit in tight spaces, the Surface Pro 7 or the Surface Go 2 are much more reasonably priced and offer better productivity.

I recently had the privilege to sit down (well share a Zoom call!) with Adrian Montgomery, Chief Executive Officer of Enthusiast Gaming. It is not often as a writer you get direct, unfiltered access to the CEO of one – if not the – leading company in its space, let alone for it to be in my favorite sector – eSports!

For those still unfamiliar with Enthusiast Gaming (as I realize not all of you are quite there on eSports yet! Time to get on-board now though, huh?), the company’s aim is to “build the world’s largest platform of communities for gamers and eSports fans”.

It is already the largest gaming network in North America and the UK with 100 gaming related websites, 1,000 YouTube channels, 7 professional eSports teams and over 30 virtual and in-person gaming events globally such as EGLX, (eglx.com) and the largest mobile gaming event in Europe, Pocket Gamer Connects. The platform reaches over 300 million gamers each month, generating an average of 4 billion views of content each month.

Enthusiast Gaming also has approximately 500 gaming influencers, reaching over 500 million subscribers on Twitch and YouTube. Enthusiast Gaming’s eSports division, Luminosity Gaming, has over 70 million loyal fans and followers, and is a leading global eSports franchise that consists of 7 professional eSports team, including the Vancouver Titans Overwatch team and the Seattle-based Call of Duty team. Yes, wow.

Before joining Enthusiast Gaming, Adrian was a senior officer and director of several companies in media, sports and entertainment, finance and industrial services — most recently serving as president and CEO of Aquilini Sports and Entertainment, one of Canada’s premier sports and entertainment organizations. Adrian’s personal passion for eSports clearly jumped off the screen as we got talking about how he became involved in eSports one fateful day when he had a very different type of rental inquiry for their 20,000 seat arena.

“I had just read an article about eSports, and one of my guys phoned me and said “You know how you were interested in eSports? Well, these guys are coming in – do you want to come on the site tour?”. Well, it turned out we had this opportunity to host the biggest eSports event in the world – the DOTA 2 International run by Valve – that was coming out of Seattle for the first time. I came down and met these three guys, who were acting as if they were in charge of FIFA or the SuperBowl or something! “Take that down, move that, block that off, our crew needs this…”. I was getting a little frustrated and keen to try to put them in their place, saying ‘Hey, so what exactly is the prize purse for this little rinky-dink tournament right? “$33 million dollars (USD)”. Oh my god! So, I went back at the end of the site tour and said, alright, there is clearly something here!”

Despite several doubters among traditional hirers of the venue and concerns on the complexity of the set-up and all its incredible visual effects, the event went ahead. The entire building sold out in one hour for six straight days, the city of Vancouver became overrun with cosplay wearing, DOTA 2 fans and Adrian’s team could not get into their offices as fans lined up were around the block to get in. So how did the DOTA 2 team achieve this? A complex, multi-layered, omni channel marketing campaign?

“It is almost impossible to sell out a 20,000 seat arena for six days. So I asked the organizers, “I’ve got to know – what is the marketing plan here? They said, “look dude, we’ve got it covered,” to which I replied with, “look, I might be fired tomorrow so you’ve got to give me something.” To my surprise, they said “Ok, you want to know the plan, ok, here is the plan. First we are going to send out a Tweet…” and I said “Ok.. and?” and they responded with – “That’s it, that’s our marketing plan.”

This moment saw the company’s 87-year-old multi-billionaire owner task Adrian with getting into this brave new world of eSports.

“What did you do? And whatever you did, we need to get all of the way into this industry.” A month later they bought an Overwatch team, then Luminosity Gaming and the rest is history”

Enthusiast Gaming Event

Fast forward to today, in asking what now sets Enthusiast Gaming apart, without hesitation Adrian cites the company’s singular focus on its fans.

“We feel no-one is as obsessively focused on the fan experience as we are. The thing that makes us so different to anyone else in the space is that we are not trying to dominate a vertical; we are not trying to just be an eSports organization, a collection of websites, or a tournament organizer – we want to build value right across the fan experience. If you are a super-keen EPIC Games’ Fortnite player who has logged-off, the beauty of this gaming phenomenon is that you are not then ‘done’ – you go to Twitch where – obviously! – we want you watching our Fortnite streamers Muselk and Fresh, when you go to YouTube, we want you to go to the biggest Fortnite YouTube channel in the world – our channel, BCC Gaming, if you want to see what EPIC Gaming is up to next, we want you to then come to one of our events and see their booth up-close. It is all highly integrated – and hopefully a lot of fun also!”

While it is clear Enthusiast Gaming connects with its fans in a very genuine way and has built meaningful relationships, you would be forgiven for thinking there is a significant marketing machine behind this growth – and a bit like how Adrian was surprised about the DOTA 2 event, you may also be surprised to learn they’ve done it in a purely organic, authentic way.

“The thing that blows people away – and is routed in our content and approach – is when I tell them we don’t spend a single cent in acquiring or keeping that traffic coming back. They won’t believe it. Building a world-class business routed in user-generated content is definitely a very hard thing to do – and when you succeed it is a very hard thing to explain! There is a lot of art as to how it’s curated, how its presented, but when you can do it well, the sky is the limit for you in terms of possibilities.”

For all of its growth, gamers can still be seen to be misunderstood as a community. Of the 300 million active base the company has, many falls into the cliched ‘hard to reach’ segments – of Millennials, GenZ & Gen-A, and that are so attractive to brands.

Enthusiast Gaming Event

“They are the world’s most lucrative demographic because they have a lot of purchasing power. They don’t have their money sucked away by these things called children and mortgages. If you are a company, you are no doubt trying to get them into your world at a very early point in their buying lifecycle. What people don’t really understand is that with any traditional sports would kill for the demographics of an eSports fan – they are a little bit older than you think – typically being in their 20’s; they have more disposable income than other traditional sports fan but then, they are elusive – they just don’t consume content the way I did in 20 years ago!”

Enthusiast Gaming is already partnering with the likes of Gillette, Proctor and Gamble, GoDaddy, and Pizza Hut. However, Adrian was clear that other brands need to realize that gaming is not a hobby for many millions – billions of people.

“eSports is more than a hobby for gamers – it’s a way of life. It’s their identity, it’s their social network, and it’s their method of expression. eSports and gaming is going to continue to skyrocket, and people are realizing how pervasive it is in people’s lives. What I’ve seen change this year – and I can tell you which is one of the most exciting things for our industry today – is that most marketing directors now know if you need to communicate with young people, you simply must have a video game strategy. eSports has made quantum leaps during the recent pandemic.”

With the likes of GenZ’s being highly influenced by the people they follow on social media, it just so happens that their heroes– and some the biggest stars on social media – are gamers. Enthusiast Gaming sponsors some the biggest athletes, recently signing one of the biggest content creators on Twitch – xQc – who has a community of 100,000 concurrent viewers every night. The company is also focused on developing the next generation of talent. Recently creating the “Rising Stars” competition, Enthusiast Gaming sought to leverage its incredible platform to create a “star-making factory” and find and develop the next gaming superstars of tomorrow.

“We are trying to create ‘The Voice’, we’re trying to create ‘American Idol’ for gamers. We recently had a five-week competition with all entries judged by stars on our roster like xQc, Muselk, Anomaly, and Fresh sit on as judges. We recently concluded the competition at the 2020 Enthusiast Gaming Live Experience (ELGX), where BabyCappah took the title and a $100,000 USD sponsorship with Luminosity Gaming. We are creating something of a Simon Cowell fuelled concept here…and I think we are going to be very successful with it!”

BabyCappah will actually become a fully-fledged member of the Luminosity Gaming roster. In true entrepreneurial style the company had originally beta-tested the concept with a smaller version called ‘So You Think You Can Stream’.

“The incredible gamer who won is actually quadriplegic – RockyNoHands – we made the decision instantly to sign him to Luminosity Gaming. We are so proud to be associated with him. He is an incredible example of how we can hopefully convince people with disabilities to engage more with eSports with him as a leading ambassador – it is very exciting to see the impact eSports can have.”

We all hear the eye-popping statistics about how big the gaming industry is. From Activision, to Tencent, to EA to biggest companies on the planet – Amazon, Facebook and Google – vying to be THE broadcast platform for the content is clear that there is still so much growth in eSports. This is true for Enthusiast Gaming which has also recently completed others acquisitions, and with the company planning to list on NASDAQ, and launching a free Ad-Supported Streaming TV Channel – BCC Gaming – with Samsung TV Plus. So – what’s next?

“What is next is for us to sell our content – using elements such as subscription. We believe we can take a userbase and turn it into a marketplace. Why can’t we have an App Store? Can we connect these communities and people together and make a social media network of our own even – that is all ahead of us. I always tell my team, while we are building a company called Enthusiast Gaming, we are also helping to build an industry – and the rules are being written as we speak. The plane is getting configured in flight and there are people like us, like FaZe Clan, and all of the other publishers collectively building something incredible. To have people like you helping get the word out and for taking us seriously really means a lot and it is very exciting times ahead.”

It is clear from talking to Adrian that there is an incredible opportunity for brands to engage through eSports provided they are happy to mirror Enthusiast Gaming’s authentic approach. As a CEO, Adrian is a leader driving everyone forward in an open, honest and authentic way and clearly runs a very collegiate, interactive and respectful organization that every company can learn from. It is clear Enthusiast Gaming will be a major part of eSports’ continued growth and I’ll be watching with great interest.

What Makes A Smart Phone A Genius Phone?

So, what’s the difference between just being smart to being a genius?

There’s an immense variance between being really bright and being intellectually gifted. While geniuses do tend to be extraordinarily intelligent, they also use imagination and creativity to conceive, realize or envisage something unique. They blaze new trails instead of just trudging down the beaten path. For the genius, the ability to imagine new possibilities is as important as intelligence.

Great geniuses in world history are central to our advancements in science, technology and understanding. Without geniuses from Archimedes to Stephen Hawking, our understanding of mathematics, literature and music would be completely different. Concepts that we now take for granted, like gravity, planetary orbits and black holes, might still be undiscovered.

In the same way, the LG Optimus cell phone is a concept – a genius prototype of the way mobile phones will be built and used in the near future.

On The Cellular Level

It’s a fact that form and function are significant factors when buying a cell phone but performance is the most decisive dynamic to be considered. Never forget that a cell phone is only as good as the calls it makes. Thus, even if your handset has the best attributes but can’t make or take a single decent quality call, it’s virtually useless. Even the snatchers in Quiapo and Arranque won’t spend a New York minute trying to filch your phone.

While it’s true that the strength of a carrier’s network is critical to making good calls, the strength of the phone’s antenna and receiver play a big part in performance as well. The fact is, you are buying a cell phone so it follows that at its very core, your handset should serve its one true purpose – call the guy at the other receiving end.

So, for form, function and performance, who you gonna call?

No — not The GBs – call the Optimus, and you’ll discover that it doesn’t scrimp on the most basic function of any cell phone.

If you know the name and if you know the number, you can spend all your unli time talking until your jaw hurts because the LG Optimus cell phone’s 1500 mAh Li-Ion battery can last for up to 400 hours of stand-by or up to 7 hours and 50 minutes of talk time. You don’t even have to lift a finger to do it – with built-in voice dialing, your command is the phone’s wish.

When the time comes when every one of your friends and family members eventually catch up with you in the 3G trend, you’ll be ready to make true video calls with the phone’s 1.3 MP secondary front-facing camera which you can use for high quality video chats.

Additionally, I like the text messaging service’s threaded view. I do most of my communication via SMS and having this feature in the Optimus lessens the confusion of piecing together an ongoing SMS conversation especially if you’re discussing various issues with several people.

Add a proximity sensor feature (so my phone knows if I’m nearby so it can rest and save energy while I’m away), an accelerometer and a gyroscope, and the LG Optimus becomes one handy BFF (best fone forever).

The Fast and The Nitrous

The LG Optimus 2X uses NVIDIA’s Next Generation Tegra, the world’s first processor for the mobile web, specifically designed for the high-resolution needs of tablets.

According to the NVIDIA website, Tim Bajarin, President of Creative Strategies, Inc. said, “The new NVIDIA Tegra processor has a unique feature set critical for tablets — fast web browsing with fully rendered pages, uncompromised graphics, snappy user interface and HD video — all with the battery life we’ve only seen with cell phones.”

The key to the Tegra’s capabilities are eight independent processors, including the world’s first dual core CPU for mobile applications. These processors are used together or independently to optimize power usage at all times. With its ultra low-power design, Tegra delivers over 16 hours of HD video or 140 hours of music — on a single charge.

The Next Generation Tegra is a leap in mobile computing performance for the following reasons:

The world’s first Dual-core 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor, ULP GeForce GPU, Tegra 2 chipset.

Eight independent processors that make short work of web browsing, HD video encode and decode and mobile 3D gaming.

At a maximum CPU clock rate 1.2 GHz (dual-core), it’s just .6 GHz short of the dual core PC I’m using now, and my computer plays Crysis, Call of Duty – Modern Warfare, Red Alert 3, Starcraft 2, Oblivion, The SIMS 3 and Medieval 2 Total War. It’s not a new PC but it’s still quite fast pa rin, debba?

NVIDIA believes that the future of GPUs on smart phones is no different than the future of PC GPUs. As a result, the GeForce ULV GPU in NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 looks very similar to a desktop GPU — just a lot smaller, and a lot lower power. Or, in the other words, the only thing stopping NVIDIA from putting an Intel 7-like or an AMD Hexacore-similar processor in a cell phone like the LG Optimus is that a processor that powerful needs large amounts of power more than any mobile battery can provide.

Basically, the Tegra 2 processor was designed for a tablet PC. But the guys at LG wanted to give the Optimus more computing nitrous (The Fast and The Furious speak right there) so they basically put an F22 Raptor jet engine in a Mazda RX7. The result is a cell phone that runs in machs not in miles, if you get my drift — my Tokyo Drift.

Now, imagine that Tegra powering your cell phone. Like a mobile phone on nitrous, the LG Optimus excels at multi-tasking between applications and boosts superior web browsing performance. Start-up times of programs /apps and games are suddenly in turbo speed. Your phone will always be sober (alive, alert and enthusiastic) unlike other phones which are as hard to wake up as “pess droonk” English hooligans who’ve had too much Vino Kulafu after watching a Manchester United match.

A dual-core powered cell phone augmented with a 512 MB RAM means you can run multiple applications simultaneously without reducing everything to a grinding crawl. You can switch between applications while maintaining your MS Office Word document or your Excel spreadsheets. You can listen to Bruno Mars and still download files while playing X Men for Android OS – and still receive calls from your boss who asks about the progress of your report. Gaya nga ng sabi ni pareng Bruno, “It’s simply amazing.”

Sa medaling salita, my dream (and every workaholic’s dream for that matter) of having a a mobile phone that works hard (and plays hard) as you has finally been realized with the LG Optimus.

Like most tablet PCs in the market today, the LG Optimus is driven by the Android 2.2 Froyo.

The Android OS is a software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications. Google Inc. purchased the initial developer of the software, Android Inc., in 2005. Android’s mobile operating system is based on the Linux kernel. Google and other members of the Open Handset Alliance collaborated on Android’s development and release.

The Android Open Source Project is tasked with the maintenance and further development of Android. The Android operating system is the world’s best-selling Smartphone platform. Android has a large community of developers writing applications or apps that extend the functionality of the devices. There are currently over 200,000 apps available for Android.

The Android Market is the online app store run by Google, though apps can also be downloaded from third-party sites. Developers write primarily in the Java language, controlling the device via Google-developed Java libraries.

While I was in Divisoria to buy some Naruto and Gundam action figures, I visited Jeney Tan, my favorite tablet PC vendor at 168 Mall. She is all out for the Froyo. She explained to me every conceivable feature and advantage of the OS including the accelerometer which tilts everything you see when you hold the gadget in landscape or portrait mode.

Jeney even made bida about the Android 2.3 Gingerbread that should be in the market by now. Pre-loaded with Froyo, the LG Optimus is upgradable to Gingerbread. Adding my own flawed logic, I informed her that Gingerbread is a big leap from Froyo that when the cell phone’s display is held in portrait or landscape mode, it actually tilts the user in that orientation. She then looked me straight in the eye and said the words that I will never forget, “Ser, bebele ba kayo?”

Like a bowl of frozen yogurt during hot summer nights, Froyo (short for frozen yogurt) is a refreshing approach to using tablet PCs and high-end, high performance phones like the LG Optimus.

The Way It’s Meant To Be Played

Before I got the LG Optimus, I had one of those popular media players made by a US company named after a red or green fruit (and no, it’s not a berry). The video playback and quality was okay but among my long list of peeves was that it played a limited number of video formats if not just one which is MP4.

The video format is okay for my cell phone and my computer. But my other portable player has trouble playing MP4s and only plays Windows Media Video formats. So, I had to convert videos to MP4 for my portable media player and into WMV format for my family’s other video player and for movie / video archiving.

It’s in playing various video formats that the LG Optimus shows its true awesomeness. Because it plays and supports multiple video codecs (plus DivX / XviD video support), I don’t have to convert / encode my movies or videos over and over again for viewing and archiving. That saves me time. Precious time that I can waste playing Tekken.

Beyond video support, the Optimus wows us with its display.

I remember the first time I saw the Optimus at an LG outlet glass shelf, I was really amazed at the proportions — 34-22-32. Uh, okay, that was the vital statistics of the salesgirl who look liked Megan Fox. What struck me was that the screen seemed bigger than my touch phone. Asking Megan, I mean the salesgirl, I discovered that my other phone only had a 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen multi-touch display while the Optimus had a 4.0 inch display (all the better to see Megan Fox with).

The Optimus is equipped with a 16M-color capacitive IPS LCD touch-screen of WVGA resolution (480 x 800 pixels). It has a HDMI port which you can use for HDMI mirroring. Just connect it to a wider screen or an HD TV and experience the most vivid and life-like videos this side of Cybertron.

Because the phone is able to play in full HD through any monitor, you see every detail of Jennifer’s Body in astonishing clarity and sexiness.

I usually watch videos and movies over large monitors when I’m with my family. Most of the time though, I’m using the LG Optimus to catch up on the latest movies while waiting for the FX or the van at the terminal. The viewing experience is just as good as the big screen which can sometimes make you feel that your head is going to be eaten by a giant 3D piranha.

But the best place to watch is in bed – relaxed and alone. And with the Optimus phone’s superior theater-like sound and HD video, I feel like I will have to save Bella again in the upcoming Twilight XXV: Vampire Sequels Without End.

Take Your Best Shot

The LG Optimus possesses an 8 MP autofocus camera with an LED flash for insufficiently lighted areas like bars, discotheques, concerts and internet cafes / Counterstrike fragging rooms. It prioritizes people over things and stuff with that Photoshop-friendly face detection feature.

I could stop ranting about the phone’s super astig camera right here and you’d be convinced by its performance. But since I like listening to myself talk, let me continue.

Just for the camera phone, I’d sell my other touch screen phone made by a company named after a pomaceous fruit of the species Malus domestica. Compared with LG Optimus phone’s 8 MP camera, my other phone has a measly 5-megapixel still camera (boy, is it cool — NOT!).

Hands down, pants down – the LG Optimus takes the matrix of leadership in still camera shooting.

Size Does Matter

When the folks at LG designed the Optimus, they had the young Spielbergs and fledgling George Lucases in their mind. Empowering the YouTube generation, they imbued the phone with the ability to do 1080p video recording at 24fps and 720p at 30fps. I have a JVC Everio HD camcorder that does the same – and it’s a full-fledged video recorder! How the LG people managed to cram a lufet video recorder inside the Optimus phone’s sleek frame is beyond my comprehension. But that’s why they’re geniuses, you see.

And if you’re in a Miley Cyrus or Katy Perry concert and want to record the whole thing, there’s plenty of internal storage (8 GB) and a micro SD slot for 32 GB cards.

Even with just a video recorder match-up, the LG Optimus slaughters the leading, popular competitor which can only record VGA-quality videos at 30 frames per second with the front camera.

No contest. Match over. Anyone for pizza?

Got My Blueprint, It’s Symphonic

You’ll go gaga over the LG Optimus phone’s high definition virtual surround sound. For me, dinner time at the mall is always a constant battle. Whether I’m having meals at Gumbo, Tokyo Café, Banana Leaf, Bacolod Chicken Inasal, Koryo or Gerry’s Grill (all located at SM City The Block), I’m always wishing that my cell phone would successfully find and connect to the free WiFi available at the mall. Most of the time, I’m victorious as the Azkals and in rare occasions it’s like The Battle of Bull Run, Masada, Pearl Harbor and the Fall of Bataan all rolled into one.

But these days, with the LG Optimus, my WiFi struggles are like a walk in the park – the Sandara Park. Its WiFi is at 802.11 b/g/n which means it decently performs whenever you need to update your Twitter account while feasting on that plate of spicy Jambalaya or Garlic Potato.

A phone that can connect to Wi-Fi hotspots enables you to surf the Web or transfer data at much higher speeds. Even if your phone supports 3G networks, you may want Wi-Fi support, too, as it tends to be faster and more reliable than cellular networks. It can be cheaper, too, since surfing on a Wi-Fi network doesn’t require using your carrier’s service.

With the LG Optimus, enjoy high-speed access to your favorite sites with full web browsing faster than any other smart phone in the market. With the dual core processors sharing the load of stacking up graphics, pages and videos, you will notice a faster response time especially those sites with a lot of multimedia and flash components like IGN, FilePlanet or GameSpot. One of the best innovations of the LG Optimus Black is the enhancement and the durability of its LCD display. The LCD screen’s contrast and backlight strengths are indispensable for any cell phone. Ironically, it isn’t the darkness of the night that makes images or text unreadable – it’s the bright glare of sunlight which makes thing harder to peruse.

I usually ride shotgun in the FX or van which makes sunlight shine directly on my lap – the exact area where I would be reading an e-book (currently it’s Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic — Deceived). The brightness of the morning sun defeats the LCD screen making the e-book unreadable. It’s the same problem when I watch episodes of Gunny’s Lock and Load – the video is too bomalabs.

That’s the reason why I scored a cell phone capable of counter-acting the brightness factor. The Black’s 4” NOVA display has 700 nits of brightness, 16M-color WVGA capacitive IPS LCD unit. It’s the brightest cell phone screen in the world making outdoor viewing in broad daylight friendlier to the eyes.

The LG Optimus Black also supports multi-touch, which means you can register more than one touch point at a time. This technology allows you to pinch and grab the screen to zoom in and out on a Web page, for example. Other phones support single touch only, and can register only one tap at a time.

Is It Safe?

In the movie, The Marathon Man, the Nazi operative Szell (Laurence Olivier) repeatedly asked Babe (Dustin Hoffman) “Is it safe?” He was referring to the bag of diamonds Szell had procured at the height of the Third Reich. Of course Babe had no idea what it was all about and he got tortured severely for it.

I mentioned that movie for two reasons. First, one of my favorite actors is Dustin Hoffman. Second, most cell phone users are like that Szell character in the movie – they’re always asking the manufacturers “Is it safe?” referring to their handsets.

One of the most sensitive and most exposed parts of the cell phone is its screen or LCD display. Which is the reason why the kinfolks at LG made sure their units were ready for the vicious bump and grind of everyday buhay. No wonder the LG Optimus is equipped with a 4.0 inch, 480 × 800 pixel Gorilla Glass display.

The unique composition of Gorilla Glass allows for a deep layer of high compressive stress. This is created through an ion-exchange process. This compression acts as a sort of “armor,” making the glass exceptionally tough and damage resistant.

If you’ve listened to FM radio lately, you’ll notice that it sounds more like the AM band than what we’ve always known what FM sounds like. Besides the proliferation of talk shows, there are advice and counseling programs, jokes, skits and the proverbial balahura and balasubas DJs who dish out salitang kalye or palingkera style observations on politics, showbiz, romance, work and the intricacies of life.

The rise of the balahura and the balasubas DJs may have something to do with the surge of portable media players that can load up more music MP3s than one can possibly play in one whole day or work week. Thus, if it’s just listening to music that you’re after, you don’t need FM radio. You just need a media player and be your own DJ and choose your music line-up day after day.

But for us who also like to listen to intelligent banter and witty discussions like Monster Radio’s Morning Rush or Nicole Hyala and Cris Tsuper’s Tambalang Balasubas at Balahura, we turn to FM radio.

The FM radio experience with the LG Optimus is really top notch. For starters, the audio is first rate — stereo FM radio with RDS. There’s a micro USB port for charging and stereo Bluetooth v2.1.

. The faint sound of music floated into the hallway as she approached the door, and it made her sigh - her son was almost over the flu, but the lack of classic rock blasting through their home was a clear sign that he still wasn't quite over the hump.

"Hey honey," she said, opening the door then crossing over to the bed, and he muted his music without being asked - another telltale sign he wasn't a hundred percent.

"Hi, Mom."

"You feeling any better?" she asked.

"A little bit."

She laid her hand across the young boy’s forehead, then leaned over and gave it a kiss before walking around the end of the bed and over to the far wall, pulling the curtains open to let some of the morning sun shine into the room, eliciting a grimace from the kid.

“Guess what? Your grandfather’s here,” she said, perching on the side of the bed next to her son.

"Ugh, Mom - can't you tell him I'm sick?"

"You're sick - that's why he's here."

"He'll do that thing with my hair. I hate that."

"Maybe he won't," she replied with a touch of a sing-song voice.

"Heeeeey!"

The cheerful voice and a bit of a bang as the opened door swung back and bumped the wall caused their heads to turn. The older man, his hat still on and his coat flung over his arm, took a few long strides that put him by the bed in seconds.

"How's the sickly, huh?" he asked, immediately ruffling the boy's hair.

The boy gave his mother the side-eye of the century and she tried but failed to hide a tiny smile.

"I think I'll leave you two alone," she said, standing and leaving as her father laid a small wrapped package he'd had hidden under his coat onto the bed.

"I brought you a special present."

"What is it?"

"Open it!"

The kid snatched it up, a bit of spark returning to his demeanor as he immediately began tearing off the paper - then the spark waned.

"A book?"

"That's right!" his grandfather replied, then gestured around the room. "When I was your age, all these gadgets were called books. And this is a special book - it was the book my father used to read to me when I was sick, and I used to read it to your mother, and today I'm gonna read it to you."

The kid seemed to consider this proposal. "Has it got any action in it?" he asked warily.

"Are you kidding? Punching, fighting, shooting, monsters, possession, torture, revenge, chases, escapes, true love, miracles!"

"Doesn't sound too bad," the kid acquiesced, now turning the muted music off completely. "I'll try and stay awake."

"Oh, well, thank you very much, very nice of you, the vote of confidence is overwhelming," his grandfather replied in a wry but loving tone, taking off his hat and setting it on the bedside table.

The old man donned reading glasses, cleared his throat, then flipped open the book as he leaned back, settling into the chair and reading aloud.

- CHAPTER ONE -

Dean was born in a closed-off town, though he grew up on the wide-open road. His favorite pastimes were listening to classic rock, tinkering around with his muscle car

"Is 'muscle car' a euphemism?"

At the interruption, a single arched brow became visible over the top of the book's cover.

"How do you... are you old enough to know what that word means? And 'muscle car' just means 'muscle car'."

"I do not think it means what you think it means."

Another clearing of the throat. Then, slightly louder:

"With his muscle car..."

and tormenting the newest hunting and research apprentice at his family's business. He knew her name, but he never called her by it.

"Isn't that a wonderful beginning?" the man asked with a sentimental smile.

"Yeah. It's really good," the kid replied flatly.

Nothing gave Dean as much pleasure as ordering the apprentice around.

"Hey, sweetheart - make sure you polish up Baby for me. I wanna see this gorgeous mug shining in it before we head out tomorrow morning."

Dean slid a worn shop cloth and half-empty can of wax down one of the library tables, where it knocked into an open book before traveling on to hit the edge of a notepad and coming to a stop.

The young woman writing notes frowned slightly at the errant mark her pen made due to the jostling, but she didn't look up at Dean as she responded.

"You got it."

You got it - that was all she ever said to Dean. She spoke at length with his brother Sam, with their colleagues. Even her clipped questioning style of potential witnesses or suspects was more than she'd ever said to him.

"Hey, sweetheart - make sure all these are cleaned, too."

She paused in her current task, cleaning a shotgun, and turned her head, staring over at the three or four handguns Dean had just placed in the chair beside her. She just blinked a few times, barely met his eye, then looked back to the shotgun and nodded.

"Please," Dean tacked on.

"You got it."

That day he was amazed to discover that when she was saying "You got it", what she meant was:

I hate you

And even more amazing was the day he realized he truly hated her back.

She passed by him in the kitchen, on her way to the refrigerator, as he was standing at the metal island, chopping up tomatoes and prepping other various ingredients for that night's dinner.

"Sweetheart!" he called out, waiting til she'd just barely stepped over the threshold to head back to the war room.

She froze and visibly stiffened. Her grip on the water bottle she held got so tight he actually heard the plastic give. The cold glare she leveled at him as she turned would've iced even the most fiery of demons.

Dean was only deterred a fraction of a second before he glanced around, and then up to the rack of chef's sundry within arm's reach right above him.

"Hand me that ladle?"

She slowly walked over to him, the daggers she was shooting into his eyes never waning, and she stopped millimeters in front of him, almost coming into contact.

And without looking she reached up and to the side, grasping the ladle and removing it from the hook before letting it drop with a loud CLINK onto the metal surface next to his cutting board.

"You. Got. It," she hissed through gritted teeth, and a very forced, clench-jawed, thin-lipped, clearly fake, not-quite-smile came to her lips.

Dean sneered back.

The next morning, Sam was coaching from the side of the room in the basement that served as his workout space while she and Dean practiced fighting techniques.

It was when Dean had laughed in her face during her third attempt at pinning him that she broke her months-long habit of barely speaking to him - and with a vengeance, letting out such a stream of curses sprinkled with smatterings of scathing sweethearts, that it made Sam's cheeks grow pink and his eyes grow wide.

Dean hit the mat hard and with a loud grunt at her fourth - and what turned out to be her final - attempt.

As they landed in such a haphazard manner, so it was that after their foreheads struck, necks snapping back briefly before slamming forward again with the recoil, and with sweaty limbs entangled, uttering heaving breaths, their faces met.

Dean gave her a wink before letting his head continue its trajectory, planting his lips onto hers.

"Hold it, hold it."

Wizened eyes met younger, clearly skeptical ones.

"What is this? Are you trying to trick me? Where's all that stuff you told me?"

The old man's eyebrows raised as the kid's eyes narrowed for his follow-up:

"Is this a kissing book?"

"Wait, just wait," began the old man, holding up a hand.

"Well when does it get good?!" the kid demanded.

"Keep your shirt on, lemme read."

Following a well-executed knee-to-groin maneuver which made both brothers groan, a decision was made.

The apprentice had no real money to speak of, but she still packed up her belongings and left the bunker, hoping one of the contacts she'd made through her tireless work would give her a place to crash, perhaps even take her on as a research assistant.

Sam had tried to talk her out of it, said he hoped she'd reconsider.

Dean had hoped the large outer door would hit her in the ass on her way out.

"It was a very emotional time for all of them," the old man pointed out.

"I don't belieeeeve this," the kid replied, flopping back onto his pillows with a sigh.

I’ve written before about the power of community when it comes to exercise, and recently read an old article in the New York Times that makes the same point regarding diet and general longevity—that healthy habits are often mutually reinforcing, but only as long as there’s a network of support. Almost everyone I know has heard me gush about how much I loved my Philadelphia CrossFit gym and its associated social network, and although the move back to North Carolina has overall been an extremely positive change, it took me a while to find the right exercise fit once I got here. Every place I tried was missing something—either the location wasn’t convenient, the class times didn’t work with my schedule, or the coaching style wasn’t a good fit. I briefly found ‘my tribe’ at a brand-new CF gym—that ultimately closed after less than a year for financial reasons, its members fanning out across the Triangle to all manner of other facilities.

Out of frustration, disillusionment, and lack of options, I ended up taking six months off from CrossFit altogether and trying a different style of training, focusing on stability and mobility, with a lot of isometric holds and kettlebell work (one gym member, casting about for a description, called it ‘strength yoga’). To its credit, this style of activity—watched closely by very knowledgeable coaches, with form as the absolute highest priority at all times—went a long way towards helping me neurologically rewire my posterior chain and finally heal a nagging back injury. However, it just wasn’t CrossFit, and although I kept showing up—half-jokingly referring to it as “taking my medicine”—I didn’t have the same drive that I remembered from years past. In Philadelphia, I’d walk out of the gym after a tough session on Monday morning already feeling excited about what we might get to do on Tuesday. In this environment—although I certainly saw others around me who exhibited that enthusiasm—I just didn’t feel it myself. My attendance slowly dropped from 5-6 days a week to four, sometimes even just three. My social circle, which for years had been centered around the gym, shifted to other outlets—which wasn’t altogether bad, but meant that there was inherently a lot more food and drink involved, with a lot less communal understanding of how that food and drink fit into a larger health framework. This combination of factors meant that weight gain—already an issue due to having lost my physically intense city lifestyle of bike-commuting and walking several miles a day—accelerated.

Eventually, the coach at the ‘strength yoga’ gym, who was also a personal friend, told me to my face, “You’re coming in here every day wanting this to be CrossFit, and it’s not. You’re not bringing your best attitude in here because you’re not doing what you want to be doing.” He was right; more importantly, he had a specific gym recommendation that, although it was a comparatively longer hike from my home, turned out to be a great fit. Finally, after two years, I had a community again.

The first six months were spent recouping some of my strength—I had lost a lot of ground, more so than I would have expected. I started matching most of my old barbell numbers after a few months; however, gymnastics movements—not my forte even at the best of times—did not progress at nearly the same rate, in part because I was still carrying 15 extra pounds. I kept showing up, kept completing the workouts, but during those first months, there was still a sense of ‘duty’ about it. Mentally, I was glad to be back, but my abilities were still so far below where I used to be that, emotionally, I didn’t yet feel like I could fully commit without simultaneously opening myself up to the full impact of that crushing discouragement.

I didn’t sign up for the CrossFit Open in 2017, mostly for the bruised-ego reasons above—I knew I wasn’t at the level I’d been in years past and that attempting to perform as such would only serve to frustrate me. However, we still completed the Open workouts as part of the regular class sessions, and during the second week, I ended up completely on my own at a 6am Open session with my favorite coach. And out of the clear blue, that day proved to be the mental turning point for which I had been unconsciously waiting for so long. It wasn’t that I turned in a particularly noteworthy performance; the bigger motivator was the simple experience of a knowledgeable and perceptive coach matter-of-factly giving me her full attention, making a strategic plan for how I should approach the workout based on my objective level of ability—and then my being able to successfully execute that plan in practice. Gasping on the floor afterward, I forgot the workout itself almost immediately in the shock and unexpected relief of its execution. Despite a thoroughly mediocre score, the waves of emotion surging through me were overwhelmingly positive. It felt good to treat a physical task as though it mattered. More than that, I was completely taken aback by the forgotten luxury of having someone else accurately analyze my capabilities and tell me—correctly—how to attack a challenge, rather than me having to make strategic decisions on my own. I realized that because I was ostensibly an ‘experienced’ athlete now, that upon changing gyms, CrossFit had become yet another area of my life where I had to be the one in control—and that I had somehow resigned myself to that state of things without question. But in Philadelphia, it had been a relief and a joy to walk into the gym each day and know that I could surrender, that those coaches knew both their sport and me as an individual athlete well enough to consistently know what was best for me in any given situation. They knew when to push and when to back off, how to keep me physically safe while still helping me to progress as an athlete. I didn’t question or doubt them, because there was simply no need. And there had been a quiet joy in releasing that responsibility. In our modern adult world, that kind of unconditionally trusting relationship is rare and precious. I had understood that, and treasured it—and had sadly assumed that I’d just never find it again once I left Philadelphia. The day of 17.2, I realized I had missed that trust so deeply that I had entirely shut it out its potential.

Still sitting on the floor bathed in sweat, I was abruptly reminded that THIS was what I loved about CrossFit: the relationships. The sense of feeling thoroughly and intimately ‘known’ and being advised accordingly, in the face of something very hard. Being able to fully trust someone else’s guidance. Feeling like someone else is ‘invested’ in you, even just for a few minutes. These were experiences I’d had all too rarely in the previous 18 months. Leaving the gym that day, I felt the flicker of the old fire reignite.

I actually said aloud to a friend of mine, as he arrived for the 7am session, “Okay. I know this sounds weird. But I feel like I might be ready to ‘start trying’ again.”

“Welcome back to the club, kid,” he said with a grin.

Two weeks later, the weight-loss journey began in earnest. But for that, you’ll have to wait for Part Three. :)

How to protect your home from burglars and not get put on trial: 10 rules for effective self-defense.

People with like-minded people promoting the project “My home is my fortress” are often asked to formulate the basic rules of behavior for a person whose enemies have broken into his home. As a result, in order to give a detailed answer to this question, we turned for help to specialists from various fields, a true professional in our field: security engineers, practicing lawyers, law enforcement officers and military practice trainers. The material received is enough for a whole self-defense allowance. In the meantime, we suggest starting with the basics - the 10 most important rules of self-defense, which will be useful for anyone to know.

1. Protect your home from penetration as much as possible

If prevention is the best treatment, then the best defense against an unexpected attack is the well-fortified "perimeter" of your home.

Let's start with the budget options. A very inexpensive, but, as it turned out, a very effective way of scaring away unforeseen "guests" is to place a light on the house or the stairwell of the security alarm and a sign that the object is under guard. To enhance the effect, you can add models of surveillance cameras. They, like real cameras, can be equipped with light indicators. More expensive versions of such layouts are able to move and simulate scanning the viewing area.

If you are ready to invest significant money in protecting your home, instead of mock-ups, of course, you should install an effective security system and purchase real CCTV cameras. They will not only allow you to control the situation, but also come in handy in case it comes to self-defense. Video recording will help restore the chronology of events for law enforcement officers and will serve as proof of your innocence. If you are the owner of a private home ownership, then you should also think about equipping your site with a perimeter security alarm system, for example using motion sensors.

If you live in a multi-storey building, be sure to ensure that the landing is well lit in the evening and at night. The same rule applies to the local area, if you are a happy owner of a country cottage.

Reinforce the door block. It is advisable to install at least two locks on the front door, and their designs should radically differ from each other. It is advisable that the key lock the inside and out. This will increase the degree of security. On the inside of the door you need to place a valve, a chain with a signal or a special latch-latch. Near the door you should keep a can of tear gas nearby so that when you try to cut the chain with special pliers, drive it away by sprinkling caustic substance in his face.

If there are two or more entrances to the dwelling (through the garage, for example), then good castles should be everywhere. Balcony doors are also dangerous, especially if they are glass and sliding.

Window protection is the most difficult issue. Of course, if your apartment is located on high floors, except for the last, this question is not of primary importance for you. In other cases, depending on your willingness to invest, you can find wooden or metal shutters, anti-vandal films, rolling shutters (including electric ones), grills, armored glass, etc. on the market.

And most importantly, do not open the door to strangers. Do not leave the apartment if you see suspicious strangers in the stairwell.

2. Be Vigilant

Having heard extraneous noise, do not blame everything on paranoia and instantly check the living space.

3. Develop a plan in advance

Think and talk with family members about an action plan in case a criminal tries to get into your home. This, at a minimum, will avoid unnecessary panic.

Choose a safe place that can be easily locked up and barricaded if burglars enter the house. It can be a bedroom of parents or a child. There should be a working telephone in a safe room, whether it be a fixed line telephone or a charged mobile device. It is important that each family member knows exactly what to do in the event of a robbery. For example, a child calls the police, mom takes out self-defense weapons, dad barricades the door. Ideally, this plan should be rehearsed several times in order to act at the level of automatism in case of danger.

If you are alone in the apartment, an attacker is breaking into your home, but you don’t have a plan, as well as self-defense, then, ceteris paribus, you should run to the kitchen. There, at a minimum, household knives are available.

4. Call for help

Even if you practice martial arts and shoot accurately, do not rely solely on your own strengths.

If a threat is detected, call the police immediately and state the situation as clearly and thoroughly as possible. The brighter you outline the social danger of what is happening, the faster the outfit will arrive. If you are the owner of a traumatic or hunting weapon, you should warn the 911 operators that, if necessary, you will have to use it. According to the polled employees of security agencies, in this case, the police, fearing a shootout, significantly accelerate in their movement to your house.

While law enforcement officers are traveling, call for help from neighbors and attract the attention of passers-by on the street. For this purpose, electric sirens are ideal, or, at worst, the so-called “tweeters”, portable sos buttons used by older people in case of emergency. The loud, piercing sound emitted by such devices will attract the attention of others.

Again, if your budget allows, it is better to install an alarm button in the apartment. If unfamiliar people came to visit you and began to behave aggressively, you should immediately connect employees of private security or a private security company to this situation, and not wait for the development of events.

5. "Turn on Sherlock"

If the criminal has already entered your house, and you called the police, try to buy time. Perhaps, having warned the criminal that you are armed and ready to open fire, you will be able to either frighten the villain, or chat him and gain time before the arrival of law enforcement officers. If the plan did not work and the struggle is inevitable, despite fear and stress, try to assess the situation as objectively as possible. Believe me, this is very important, no matter how strange it sounds (they try to rob you, rape or kill you, and you must analyze what is happening as a real investigator). If your self-defense is successful and you repel the attack, but at the same time cause serious harm to your health or even kill the attacker, it is likely that you, and not your opponent, will be in the dock.

All cases related to self-defense are unique, and universal rules for this case, unfortunately, do not exist. But there is a certain minimum of factors that you must evaluate:

- Does the attacker have a weapon.

If the attacker is not armed, and you attack him with a gun or knife, then your actions will be recognized as self-defense, disproportionate threat, and you can appear before the court not as a victim, but as a defendant.

- how many criminals got into your house.

It is clear that if there are two or more raiders, then your life is in greater danger than if the criminal broke into alone.

In accordance with the explanations of the Supreme Court, in the event of an attack by several persons, the defender has the right to apply such protective measures to any of the offenders that are determined by the nature and danger of the actions of the whole group. That is, for example, if the gang is armed and one of its members has already opened fire on you, then you are not obliged to aim and try to get into the one who first pulled the trigger.

- the ratio of your forces with the characteristics of the enemy.

Consider the sex, age, physical and mental condition of the offender.

If, for example, the attacker is armed with a knife, but is in a state of extreme alcohol intoxication and does not coordinate his movements well, try to simply “knock him out”, and not cause serious bodily harm.

- the surprise of the moment.

Courts often side with the victims of night thieves, because, due to fright and unforeseen threats, the defender cannot assess the danger of the attack.

If circumstances allow, try to capture what is happening on audio or video. For this purpose, a video camera in the corridor near the front door and a regular telephone are suitable. Documenting your position will serve you well when communicating with law enforcement officials. But more on that later.

6. Stock up on self-defense weapons

In Russia, you can buy firearms for hunting weapons, gas weapons, traumatism, stun guns and gas canisters. At the same time, for all types of self-defense weapons, except pneumatics with a muzzle energy of not more than 7.5 J, stun guns and gas sprays, a license is required, which is issued by the police (in fact, now the National Guard).

The weapon should be stored not only in accordance with all the rules, in a safe place for children, but also so that if necessary you can easily remove it yourself. If you bought a stun gun, do not forget to constantly monitor the charge of its battery.

7. And know how to use it!

I'll start with the main thing. Using any type of self-defense weapon, remember that your task is to immobilize the enemy in order to safely leave the house, and not to kill him.

Use firearms with extreme caution. If the robbers start to open the front door, and in the apartment opposite to the noise, one of the neighbors clings to the door eye and you open fire from a hunting rifle, there is a risk of getting into a neighbor and going to the colony for 5-7 years. A cheap front door, as well as a non-main wall, a bullet will easily pass through. Even at criminals threatening you, do not shoot at close range or at close range. If you really had to open fire, try to aim at the limbs. We must not forget that a traumatic or pneumatic gun when fired at close range can cause no less harm to health than a hunting rifle. When using injuries, it is extremely dangerous to shoot in the head and neck. From pneumatics to the neck and face. Of course, if you see a real threat to the life of your or your loved ones, all these fears do not matter. However, do not forget that you will not be able to avoid subsequent communication with the investigator. And in the case of grievous bodily harm to the robber, and especially the death of the villain who attacked you, the court will instantly turn you from a “victim” to a “defendant”.

Recommendations for the use of stun guns are quite simple: it should be used suddenly. It is important not to scare the enemy (such behavior can, on the contrary, cause inadequate aggression on his part), but to ensure close contact of the stun gun with the body of the attacker, that is, attach to open parts.

A few words about the use of gas spray. First, first try to distract the attacker, for example, shout "stop", "beware" or any other phrase. Focus on the attacker at close range and press the can only when ready. Spray the can at arm's length, that is, at least 50 cm, because there is often a recoil from the jet. After spraying the can immediately run away, and do not wait until the enemy comes to his senses.

Use the knife in an exceptional case. The knife is, first and foremost, an attack weapon, not a defense. It may be knocked out of your hands and applicable to you.

In the case of hand-to-hand combat, aim at vulnerable places - these are knees, groin, neck, eyes.

8. Do not kill the aggressor

In a situation of necessary defense, it is very important to understand when the attack ended.

If the offender takes flight, in no case should you open fire on him. A wound in the back will indicate that you have exceeded the limits of the necessary defense.

However, the transfer of weapons or other objects from the attacker to the defender does not mean the end of the attack. If a bandit’s knife or gun fell into your hands, this does not mean that the danger has passed and you are not entitled to continue self-defense.

9. Call 02, 03 and the lawyer

If you were able to successfully repel the attack, do not relax - immediately contact the police, an ambulance and a familiar lawyer.

No matter how strange it sounds, if possible, try to even provide first aid to the attacker. If a bandit dies from blood loss, it is possible that you will have problems. First, fix the arms and legs of the attacker to exclude the possibility of escape or re-attack.

When the police arrive, describe the chronology of the fight as thoroughly and thoroughly as possible.

The participation of a competent lawyer in a self-defense case is very beneficial. Proof of this is the story of Tatyana Kudryavtseva. When she was picking mushrooms in the forest, a citizen of Uzbekistan attacked her and tried to rape her. She stabbed him with a knife, which turned out to be fatal. Tatyana immediately called her boss, who called a good lawyer. The lawyer demanded that the investigators, so that without him they would not even begin to examine the scene of the incident. It was the defender who insisted on a medical examination of Kudryavtseva and fixing other important circumstances. As a result, the woman was acquitted, although initially the investigation was of the version that Tatyana exceeded the limits of the necessary defense.

10. Do not be too heroic

If criminals demand to give money or jewelry - give it without hesitation, without entering into negotiations or, especially, in the fight. If you had the opportunity to leave the premises - be sure to run away.

And remember, for a court, the life and health of a person, even a criminal who wanted to rob you, will be more valuable than the inviolability of your property.

Values

Open-Mindedness

A value that I try to abide by every day is to be open-minded. I believe this is one of the most important attributes of any person, but especially that of a nurse. The idea that patients are partners in care has been a main focus of many lectures this semester. The reality of this concept is that patients come in all shapes, sizes, ethnicities, religions and genders. As a nurse, you must be able to work cooperatively with all types of patients. To be able to do this effectively, you must be able to stay open-minded in all situations. An open-minded approach to patient care will allow a therapeutic nurse-patient relationship to form, an essential part of the healing process. If patients feel judged or unaccepted, they are much less likely to be honest and may withhold important information from you. After a negative health care experience, patients are unlikely to return for further care. For example, a patient may neglect to inform you of his or her recreational drug use if they feel as though they would be judged. This decision could have a negative impact on his or her treatment plan because of adverse health effects of drug-drug interactions. In the photo above, you see me holding a young girl in a remote Ghanaian village that I visited during a medical outreach. Upon arrival, I noticed that all of the children were filthy, covered in scrapes, and running around on tough terrain in bare feet. My immediate thoughts were, “Where are these children’s parents?” and “How can they leave their children in these kinds of conditions?”. I quickly reminded myself that not everyone in the world is as fortunate as I am. Many of these children were orphans and had no parental influences in their lives. Many of these children came from families with absolutely zero income, who could not even imagine purchasing a pair of shoes. The children’s untreated wounds and high rates of Malaria were the results of unavailable health care and parents who were uneducated. As I began to treat my first patient, these thoughts and reminders flooded my mind. Reminding myself to remain open-minded in these situations allowed me to be better able to connect with and treat these young children who were living such desperate and disadvantaged lives. Being open-minded also results in learning. Society is diverse. By listening and learning from patients who have different beliefs and backgrounds from yourself, you can become a much more well-rounded nurse. The resulting natural learning allows me to follow my philosophy that nursing is a lifelong learning process. Open-mindedness is one of the traits that I will bring with me to my clinical practice and further health-care careers.

Accountability

Being accountable for your actions is another strong belief of mine. Without acknowledging your mistakes, it is unlikely that you will learn from them. It is human nature to make mistakes; and luckily, the field of health care is beginning to recognize this. The current focus is on preventing the same mistake from happening again, rather than punishment for the original mistake. Accountability is also based on doing what you know to be the right thing. My summer job for the past five years has been centered around positive ethical choices. I have worked at a dog boarding kennel for many years and have had the responsibility for caring for canines of all shapes and sizes. Many of our clients have dogs with life or death medications, like insulin. I have been administering insulin for many years now and recognize the importance of accuracy and attentiveness when carrying out this task; an insulin medication error can be fatal. Fortunately, I have never made a mistake with insulin. If I do, I know that being anything other than accountable will only worsen the situation. If an error was made, I would likely contact a veterinarian to find an immediate solution. As well as insulin, I have administered many other medications for thyroid issues, epilepsy, Cushing’s disease and much more. Dogs, unlike human patients, have no ability to recognize a medication error and will accept whatever you give to them without question. Their helplessness requires that an extra level of caution be adhered to. After administering any medication, whether basic or life-dependant, I must sign off on a pill chart to ensure that another staff member does not also give the medication. On a very busy weekend at the kennel, I could easily skip some of the less important medications, with zero repercussion. For example, Metacam, a liquid medication that helps to treat stiff joints and ease muscle pain in senior canines, is not essential to keeping a dog alive, but creates a night and day difference in a dog’s level of mobility and mood. I know that this is important to the dog, so I never skip these medications. I am accountable for their well-being while in my care. By signing medication charts, all staff members become accountable for the care they provided. Updating owners of any changes in behaviour or health at the end of a stay are also part of my duties. Being accountable for my actions is a moral/value that I will continue to carry with me throughout my life and career.

Empathy

In the field of nursing, having empathy for your patients can make all the difference. As we gain experiences as nurses, we will become desensitized to situations that are very sensitive for patients. Reminding one’s self that the patient’s feeling and comfort levels are a top priority is very important. The concept of patients being partners in care means that you must consider everything from the patients�� perspectives. When a person feels as though you care about his or her situation, the person is generally much more willing to be honest and cooperative with you. Empathy allows nurses to connect and engage with their patients, which in turn, makes patients feel valued and important. For nurses, every day is just another day at work, but for a patient, that day could quite possibly be the worst day of his life. For a patient, empathy from a nurse can have a significant impact on his or her mood and mindset that day. Positivity can lead to faster recoveries. Empathy is important in my life currently, not solely in my future career. By considering how those around me feel, I am better able to solve interpersonal conflicts with my friends and family, roommates and neighbours. By exhibiting empathy, I am able to help people with problems because they view me as approachable and supportive. Considering other’s emotions enables you to give more valuable advice. And, often, empathy means not giving any advice but just simply listening attentively with direct eye contact and an empathetic look on your face – just reassuring others that they are not alone, that there are many caring people in their lives who are there willing to listen and really hear what they are trying to say. I believe it comes naturally to me and I know that it is one of the most critical values I both hold and have.

Carefulness

Carefulness, attention to detail, and attentiveness are some of the attributes that constitute a successful human being, but also a successful nurse. The ability to read a situation and proceed with caution is a valuable trait, because many situations in life are highly sensitive. Choosing how to react and being careful with your word choice can be your saviour time and time again. In a hospital setting, highly sensitive situations occur on a daily basis. Births, deaths and diagnoses are all situations that must be approached with care and attentiveness. All occur on a regular basis in the health care field. Oftentimes, people do not communicate their thoughts and feelings with words, but instead express them with actions. Being attentive and alert to this can allow you to interpret things from people that they choose not to convey with words. Carefulness and attention to detail apply to other situations, too. In nursing, attention to detail regarding medications can mean avoiding a sentinel event. Using extra caution when working with high-risk medications is critical to providing safe care. Relentless attention to checking and double checking to match the patient with the health record and the drug to the patient and the correct does to the medication can help or harm a patient. Every hospital and medical professional needs to set a standard of zero harm. Carefulness and attention to detail are critical values all medical professionals need to have. However, while life and death remain the highest priority in the medical field, there are many other less critical situations that require carefulness and attention to detail as well. Due to society’s diversity, nurses are must understand patients’ differing values, beliefs and customs. Taking care not to offend patients, as well as being mindful of personal preferences contribute heavily to a patient’s experience. In elementary and secondary schools across Ontario, students like me are taught about other’s customs, beliefs and values. We are taught to pay attention to how we think, what we say and how we accommodate others’ needs. I was fortunate to grow up and a multi-cultural city, attend economically and multi-culturally diverse schools, and travel to many different countries all over the world. I know those experiences and the knowledge I have will help me to be careful and attentive to patients I hope to have the privilege to serve and help.

A wise man once said, “It’s not who I am underneath, it’ what I do that defines me.” Even though the wise man is the caped crusader from Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins, nobody can deny the aptness of this statement. Interestingly, this applies to you as well (even if you don’t fight crime in a spandex suit). Your habits do define you.

Talking about habits, students are often accused of developing certain habits that affect their studies. The worst part is that students don’t even realise the impact of these habits until it’s too late. If you are trying to identify which study habits are good for your academics and which aren’t, this blog can serve as the roadmap to your quest.

Here are the most common study habits that have a major influence on a student’s academic career:

Leaving everything for the eleventh hour:

Procrastination does not require any introduction. We are all guilty of giving in to this habit every now and then. And since it seems rewarding in the beginning, most students fall for it right away. How many times did you have to skip your sleep to finish your assignment? Probably, too many times. You wouldn’t have to sacrifice your naptime if you could just start early.

Today, you have the option to avail assignment help on the internet and finish the paper before the deadline. However, an early start is always a better option between the two. Prepare a time table and try to stick to it. This will remind you of all the things you need to do by the end of the day.

Relying heavily on the internet:

Thanks to the expansion of the internet, accessing necessary information has gotten a lot easier. Students don’t need to visit the library and spend hours to look for research materials. They can simply do a keyword search and get the information in just a few seconds. However, there’s a downside to this practice.

The Internet is an open platform where anyone can post anything. So, there is no guarantee that everything that’s found on the internet is true. If you use online data to support your arguments without verifying its authenticity, your assignment may lose its credibility. It is always recommended to verify the source of information before using it for research, especially if it’s from the internet.

Skipping classes for fun:

I don’t want to sound like your grumpy old teacher, but skipping classes is not as cool as you might think. If you have another engagement or in case you are feeling under the weather, then you are allowed to take the day off. However, if you just want to chill with your buddies instead of attending the school/college, it might not be great for your academics.

What most students don’t realise is that a majority of the questions for the final exams are mostly based on the lectures. So, if you skip the class on a regular basis, you may miss out on a lot of things that can help you score better in the finals. Also, the professors often share insights about certain topics in the class that you cannot find in the textbook.

Finishing all the chapters in one night:

Since most students have the tendency to procrastinate until the last minute, they often need to finish the entire syllabus at one go. That way, they might be able to cover the whole paper in one night, but a human brain can only remember a limited amount of information. If it is flooded with new information at once, it only remembers the information in bits and pieces.

Unless you have an eidetic memory like Dr Sheldon Cooper, your last-minute effort is not going to save you during the exams. It is better if you study one chapter a day. From a media relations perspective, I handle outreach to all of our regional reporters for our Northwest and Southwest sales regions - basically, Minnesota to Texas all the way to the West coast. On a daily basis, I’m pitching regional reporters for print, radio and broadcast outlets on T-Mobile news and trying to get them to cover our brand and news announcements...that can range from network improvements to offers and promotions, to new devices, and most recently supporting our narrative around our proposed merger with Sprint. In sum, I manage about 300+ media relationships every day.

From an industry analyst perspective, I reach out to and engage industry analysts (they primarily cover the technology industry in-depth), and work with them to help understand our business strategy, news announcements, and use them as resources to help guide our business decisions. In this role, and I’m the only one at T-Mobile who does this job (!), I manage about another 150 or so relationships across the same topics mentioned above.

Q: What are the pros and cons of your career choice?

A: What I absolutely love about PR and my job is that we work hand-in-hand with the business, marketing, and executive teams to drive the narrative for our brand. We’re on the front lines of telling T-Mobile’s story to the world, and not only helping drive the success of the business but helping consumers understand how T-Mobile is best for them! From writing messaging to drafting press releases, to writing “pitches” to media that spark their interest in telling our stories. It also allows me to think creatively on how to tell stories that resonate with people and drive action or purchase intent.

Q: How did you get your job?

A: I started off working at a PR agency, and worked at several (Waggener Edstrom, Edelman) before jumping to the corporate side (T-Mobile). I’ve supported companies such as Comerica Bank, Microsoft, MetroPCS, EDS, Experian, Boeing, and many more through cool product launches, at industry events, in and during crisis scenarios and it’s never a slow day...and I love that about my job!

While in college, I had three PR internships - all of which helped me better understand the function and role of PR and also determine which aspect of PR I enjoyed most. It also helped me hone my writing skills, my client relationships/management, and multi-tasking to help me land my first agency job...from there, it just took off, and I kept learning every day so I could continue to pursue the roles that I was most interested in!

For any resume, I always look for someone who thinks outside the box - creativity, writing, unique skills sets, being able to communicate effectively. My resume is uniquely different from any I’ve ever seen...and I get comments about that often. From the get-go, it sets me apart, and once I’m in the door, I can deliver the best parts about me in person! Fill that resume up with great experiences that you can speak to in a job interview to show what you’ve got to bring to the table! That has taken me so many places in life that I would’ve never guessed possible!

A: Social media and video have become a real weapon in the way we communicate to audiences today. While it may not be the best way to reach the older generation (who still read print or watch the news), the younger generation like yourself are much more focused on shorter tidbits and news nuggets to get their daily news (think Snapchat stories or Twitter)...and social media can be a powerful resource in telling stories and/or engaging an audience directly. By the same token, it can be dangerous if not done right or managed correctly.

Videos are also a valuable resource - whether for developing b-roll to support broadcast segments or for storytelling in general. It can serve as a great compliment to a story and help bring it to life. Think about how Facebook is now filled with videos rather than its actual “updates” from people or brands.
