About Dragons the nine realms.
I am just watching the new season that started on german free TV. There was one episode who played underwater-just like dire straits-with a modern touch. D´Angelo, Jun and Tom had "borrrowed" a diving bell to free a water dragon caught by Buzzaw. But it seemed the creators had nothing thought about water pressure, diving sickness (dont know if its called so). When they were on the ground, Tom simply dived out of the bell to free the bound dragon. Then a shellfire appeared - it was much smaller as Viggos "Thunderball" (heh, yes, I named him so in a fanfiction I wrote about it had a different continuation. And when the Shellfire fought the other dragon-he only rammed it with his snout against the rocks-was this shellfire not able to use his fire bombs? Can it only fire them outside the water? Has he lost the ability to do it in all these centuries? Or was it too young yet to use this ability? We will never knew it.

HTTYD Flocking
today on Paleostream we drew HTTYD dragons!!!!
Tumblr media
closeups and design explanations/descriptions below:
terrible terror and monstrous nightmare: you'll notice all the dragons arent hexapods, deliberate choice on my end, not much has changed about the terrible terror tbh, it just only has four limbs now, less spikes, longer feet, and a more crown-like horn arrangement.
but ooh the monstrous nightmare lmao, i decided to shrink it down and remove a lot of its spikes, i wanted to make it a sorta chihuahua of dragons, small and feels like it can pick on everything. but relies on its projectile venom to save it. instead of lighting on fire, it lights its enemies eyes on fire by spraying venom from venom glands along its neck, back, and tail at the enemy
Tumblr media
for the hideous zippleback, i decided to give them beaks (cause i felt like it) and make it so the double head is an illusion caused by the smaller sessile male who's constantly attached to the female, the female has a smaller crest and horns which makes the male's smaller head but larger features balance out the silhouettes. the male rides on the female's back everywhere being held in place by his claws and her wingtips, i also made the female cursorial because i felt like it again
Tumblr media
the rumblehorn, i went for beetle-like wings and elytra-like display feathers, and for the funny i gave it a rhinoceras beetle head, and two toes on each foot
Tumblr media
the razorwhip is a really cool design, but i was thinking that it would be a sleek and efficient killer, so i gave it smooth and dark scales that are incredibly reflective, and a parankylosaur macuahuitl. i also gave it bottom tooth-like projections on its bottom jaw
Tumblr media
for the whispering death, i made it a derived ray-finned fish because dragons are anything you want them to be (also inspired by Wyatt Andrews' Rodan design). i replaced its eyes with two white bioluminescent display features, and put its eyes where its nostrils usually are and gave it a gulper eel mouth with a loooot of gill rakers to replace the rows of teeth
Tumblr media
the red death, i decided to keep its size large, i took a lot of sauropod inspiration from this one. airsacs replaced the posterior two eyes, and i gave it a tail club and tooth-like keratin projections on the lower jaw
Tumblr media
we ended with the shellfire, even as a kid i hated the design, at this point i was on four hours of sleep and had been awake for about 12 hours, so i just made an over-sized placoderm with spurs on the side of its head, cause dragons are anything you want them to be

Randomly started thinkin' about httyd & dc crossover
Where the batfam are like a cross between Valka was and night fury
Y'know, all mysterious cryptid 'children of lightning and death' etc Maybe a bit feral and living with dragons while freeing them from trappers & becoming myths in themselves lol
Clark probably still raised by farmers/traders (maybe found the baby on the remnants of a small fishing boat wrapped in silk and dragon scales/his cape)
Diana/wonder woman is probably something similar to that one island from race to the edge (I think called the Valkyries but I don't remember lol) that consists of warrior women who look like they have wings but it's small (or young I also don't remember lol) dragons that cling to their backs
Aquaman, I mean, underwater caves and hidden islands and sea dragons and all that (We've seen water dragons that carry people on their backs via ships or in their mouths before)
Pretty much justice league but they are or become dragon riders lol

All the dragons from the HTTYD stream. Detailed images below.
The designs from the original movie are basically perfect, which is why I didn't really dare to touch them... until a certain trailer dropped recently.
I'm a spiteful creature.
Anyway. Some ground rules. I tried to make these creatures overall a little bit more realistic and grounded without robbing them of the inherent whimsy that the originals had. All of them are tetrapods, so only 4 limbs max.
Tumblr media
Nightfury
These guys have no more functional limbs to move on the ground. They are living stealth bombers. Silent fast fliers.
On the ground they flop around similar to seals, forming small colonies on top of tall cliffs.
Tumblr media
Red Death
At a certain size it becomes unfeasible to fly for even a dragon. The Red Death stays on the ground using it's heavy armor and enormous size when raiding other dragon nesting colonies. it'as wings are more like spurs, to injure rivals in combat.
Tumblr media
Gronkle
The original had a hummingbird style in flying , something that doesn't work for an animal of this size. My compromise is to make the wings rather stout and being able to be folded a lot.
Tumblr media
Nadder
Easiest design, take a unfeathered theropod and combine it with a bearded dragon.
Tumblr media
Shellfire
This was the last one I made on stream, it is one of the (in my eyes) worst designs from the shows, so a nice challenge to make it work a little better.
This guy is now a filter feeder, using its large horns to funnel water into its mouth.
Tumblr media
Zippleback
Multi-headed dragons are really tricky. In my design I made one of the heads a parasitic male, similar to angler fish, that hitches a ride on the back of the larger female.
Tumblr media
Monstrous Nightmare
One of the most classic dragons from the original movie. Lots of crocodilian influence here. The osteoderms on its back have pores from which it produces flammable secretions.
Tumblr media
Razorwhip
A fast an agile dragon, but the original doesn't really show that in the head shape and all these spines don't help. I put some tapejarid influence into it.
Tumblr media
Rumblehorn
The massive neck of this dragon doesn't work well in terms of aerodynamics, unless it's an inflatable display structure ;)
Tumblr media
Whispering Death
The giant maw of this dragon is an even greater challenge, but when you give it the gular pouch of a pelican eel and turn these eyes into eye-spots, it works quite well.
Tumblr media
And of course the Terrible Terror!
As you can see it's in my case a close relative of the nadder.

Random HTTYD Headcanons
Someone once tied together the Boneknapper and Death Song, saying that the former would hang around the game sites of the latter and then collect the bones and I agree with that so much. I’d love to re-find that post so I can credit the blog responsible because they are so, so real for this! I had to mention it because it’s such an under-appreciated take. (ETA: I found the original post here, by @dragonjadearts — thank you for this headcanon I think about it all the time.)
Changewings started to put their eggs in trees to deter Cavern Crashers from eating them.
Red Changewings are the ones that inhabit Changewing Island. Green Changewings are from further south.
Male Thunderdrums are actually the primary caretakers of young Thunderdrums. Both parents will look after and protect the eggs until they hatch but after they do the mother often leaves.
Additionally, Thunderdrums will also transport their eggs and/or hatchlings in their mouth.
Thornado and Skullcrusher have actually met. Thornado had gone out when Bing, Bang, and Boom were asleep and visited Berk, hoping to meet up with Stoick alone only to find another dragon by his chair. The encounter was awkward at first for all three parties, with Stoick trying to break the ice, but once the two dragons recognised what they had in common, they became very friendly and respecting of one another.
The Rumblehorn naturally hunts boars as its primary food source. As opposed to fishing for saltwater fish like other dragons, they also fish for freshwater fish like salmon.
Like the Submaripper and Shellfire, and the Skrill and Singetail, the Rumblehorn and Catastrophic Quaken are naturally opposing species.
Dark Deep was originally the home of the Catastrophic Quaken, not the Gronckle. Due to the sheer number of invading Gronckles, the Quaken was then mostly pushed out.
Gronckles are like the rabbits of the dragon world. They can reproduce from a young age and very often and with high egg counts.
Dragons like the Razorwhip, Timberjack, and Typhoomerang have shorter lifespans in comparison to other species.
Barb-shooting dragons grow their spikes like hair/teeth. The spines that are shot out out are ones that are knocked loose by new roots.
The more distinguishable the colours of each head, the older a Zippleback is.
Zipplebacks evolved from a mutation caused by inefficient embryo separation which means most if not all members of the species distantly share the same common ancestor.
Whip & Lash, Bucket and Mulch’s dragon, is actually female.
Bucket is related to the Thorstons.
The twins removed the S from the alphabet in Reign of Fireworms to annoy Snotlout.
The riders have contemplated who is most likely to turn into a Mildew-type, and most of them have come to the agreement that it would be Tuffnut. Chicken is his Fungus.
Mildew actually has a soft spot for Flystorm. Away from the knowing gazes of others he indulges in petting him and giving him fish, muttering “That’s nice,” as he would with Fungus.
Spitelout treats Kingstail better than anyone ever. As such all of his past methodology surrounding dragons is now in vain, and very hypocritical. (That sword analogy? How dare you compare ol’ Kingstail to that, boyo?)
Fishlegs is actually an only child (he’s always stricken me as one and it boggles me if he isn’t). Those kids he teaches in the Gronckle Scouts are actually his younger cousins. They call him ‘uncle’ due to him babysitting a lot and the difference in their ages. Fishlegs has a lot of cousins.
Fishlegs’ mother, Termagant, owns a Snaptrapper by the name of Arrogance, Innocence, Patience & Conscience. This means that Meatlug has older brothers (and a sister. Technically. Allegedly.). At first they were a bit too mischievous/privy with one another for her liking, making them seem like they were hanging up in her a bit, but they eventually got used to one another.
And yes, she makes all six of her children crab cakes.
The Monstrous Nightmare that Valka saves in HTTYD 2 is the one that took Gobber’s hand.
The Night Fury and Light Fury evolved via something similar to the Peppered Moth Evolution. Whichever one was the original species, however, is still unknown.
Gustav is allergic to peanuts.
Fanghook actually has a fear of setting things on fire.
Hiccup sees a lot of his younger self in Gustav, but it frustrates him that Gustav takes a bit more after Snotlout sometimes.
Gustav’s mother actually wanted to call him “Hiccup” (being the runt) but didn’t want to upstage the chief or confuse people, so she chose “Gustav” (meaning god’s staff or popular guest) to be ironic.
Snotlout was originally proud to have Gustav model himself after him, but when growing up and maturing on the Edge he realised that Gustav was or could be reckless because of it and started to resent him for being a “cheap copy” of him.
Hookfang has a soft spot for Gustav, mostly when he was younger. Since Gustav got Fanghook, his patience has been less withstanding.
The dragon with the least patience for kids is actually Stormfly. Just after would be either Barf & Belch or Hookfang, but by a long shot. Hookfang holds more patience for younger kids than older ones.
Spitelout for some reason shows more outwards appreciation towards Gustav, but argues with him over being leader of the A Team.

My Favourite HTTYD Dragons
I figured I'd share something that wasn't salt, so here are some collages of them:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These collages include dragons from games, movies, the shows, etc...
Yes, this includs "The Nine Realms", even though I refuse to actually watch the whole thing... some of the designs have potential.
The dragon species shown here are:
Boneknapper
Cavern Crasher
Changewing
Deadly Nadder
Death Song
Devilish Darvish
Eggbiter
Featherhide
Fireworm
Flamethrower
Flame Whipper
Flightmare
Grim Gnasher
Hackatoo
Hideous Zippleback
Hobblegrunt
Moldruffle
Monstrous Nightmare
Night Fury
Night Terror
Octofin
Prickleboggle
Purple Death
Raincutter
Razorwhip
Red Death
Rumblehorn
Sandwraith
Sandbuster
Scauldron (good ole' Scauldy)
Screaming Death
Scuttleclaw
Seashocker
Sentinel
Shellfire
Shivertooth
Silver Phantom
Skrill
Singetail
Sliquifer
Slithersong
Slitherwing
Small Shadow Wing
Smokebreath
Snaptrapper
Snowtail(s)
Stinger(s)
Stormcutter
Swordstealer
Terrible Terror
Thornridge
Threadtail
Tideglider
Timberjack
Triplestrike
Typhoomerang
Vine Tail
Whispering Death
Most of these are just based on how cool I think they're designs are, but some, like Scauldy are also here because of more sentimental reasons... and though I used the image of the Fireworm Queen, I honestly like the little guys just as much.
I do think that when The Nine Realms misses with their designs, they miss HARD, but some of their designs are okay, if at times oversaturated (or with clashing colours), or unfinished looking.

Seems like my choice of worst dragon is out! (It was the Cavern Crasher. Cool name, horrible sleazy beast, like what even in the). What's yours?
i didn't include either fury in the previous bracket bc i knew toothless would body every other species and honestly ive seen that happen before so i dont care to see it again
however, i have included both in this bracket bc i would love to see the light fury be crowned as worst. i dont know if that will actually happen bc i think as a fandom we're quite good at picking apart the little things... i still want to see the light fury lose
i hate its beluga whale face and tiny inbred ankles and glitter scales and every "female" trait they could force on that god forsaken thing. for a movie that went all out of realistic environments and sand particles and hyper detailed scale colouring they really just went "whats gonna sell as a plushie best?" and called it good enough
im going at this with a focus on design but as someone with an art degree (that im not ever even gonna use now??? let me grieve) thats whats standing out to me. and not everyone is gonna judge based on appearances bc i purposefully left that door open so we could judge these dragons overall instead of specific traits.
but while we're on the topic
hard agree on the cavern crasher. like admittedly its not a bad design, its just gross af and i avoid looking at the screen when it turns up bc it does actually turn my stomach a bit. "mucus" is bad enough without splashing it on everything & adding squirting sounds..
i hate the knock off pokemon types too, so shadow wings, triple strykes, sandbusters, shellfire also kinda fits that, submaripper, buffalord is a bit nebulous but also fits. im probably forgetting a few. grim gnashers are weirdo looking things but it felt more like the designers tried on those things.
mostly i hate the things that dont look like they have the potential to be real. like i can see any other dragon getting adapted to an irl performance pretty well but how in tf would you deal with a shadow wing? thats straight up a pokemon (derogatory).

Dragons I may be
Putting this under the cut, although it’s not too long. I know that my tail doesn’t have any spikes on it, it’s smooth and scaly, as well as quite long. (All of these are from httyd btw) (UPDATE! I have kinfirmed slitherwing, but am now questioning speedstinger)
Speed stinger
Storm cutter
Scauldron (less likely)
Shellfire (less likely)
Armor wing (tail w/out armor)
Death song
Drawmilion (likely)
flightmare (less likely)
Slitherwing (very likely)
Singetail
This is only a list of fictional dragons, I will be looking into mythical dragons, as well.

Alright since i got a yes for my httyd au
We’re gonna start off small!
In this AU RTTE continued until the riders were in the mid-twenties due to the absolute wack bonk logic that was rtte’s plot convenience, War does not end in as short of time as the dragon hunter vs rider war did
Stoick isn’t dead in this au! Mostly because since they haven’t gone back to berk yet they haven’t met Eret (mostly) and therefore they didn’t alert Drago to stop all preparations and start a war, He’s still building his army at the moment but he is important!
Johann, in this AU Johann is more of a mysterious figure, while he leads (kinda) the dragon hunters he steps back from the fighting alot more and stays in his own area strategizing
Krogan’s singetail is named WarWinner in this, We love WarWinner
Viggo lives! (Everyone is alive.) His Skrill (Now named Marauder) Got him out and as promised he “disappeared” from the archipelago but now he’s a dragon rescuer vigilante
Ryker is also alive! (I am keeping everyone alive for ai convenience shhh.) in this au he jumped off the ship and washed up on the edge’s beach before being sent to out cast prison, The whole shellfire betrayal was a elaborate plan to try and mess with the rider’s heads
Viggo and Ryker have more morals, as does Krogran, Johann is still a piece of crap
More to come soon🤟

I would love to know more about the full sized dragons in the AU!
absolutely!!
the full sized dragons are any of what would be considered the leviathans & the legendaries!! red death, green death, purple death, screaming death, bewilderbeasts, foreverwing, shellfire, the elder sentinel, the fault ripper, the doomfang, etc!!
all of these dragons are thought to have been long extinct in the modern era the au takes place!! dragons that went extinct with the dinosaurs & couldn't possibly still exist with the range of small to large dog sized dragons that exist now and are currently endangered. a small isle off the coast of where the gang live is basically dragon island & where the red death stuff goes down :)
full sized dragons are a struggle to train, if at all, & do not live near humans. the one that causes the most trouble human wise is the screaming death. his egg still gets put underground by berk by alvin & his crew as a revenge plot :) i love the screaming death in this au bc the whispering death mama (i believe her name is groundsplitter!) is so much tinier than she is in the shows!!!! smol mama & big baby boi.
the gang love being the center of everything /hj & tend to be the ones that find these legendary creatures & remind humanity that they are small in the grand scheme of things :)
also while not necessarily legendary, the crimson goregutter is also it's full original size bc funny :)

"GRIM: The Palace of Eyes" Weapon Entry: Shellfire Shotgun
Shellfire Shotgun (Shotgun, 10 Shell Ammo)
Standard Fire: Deal 20 damage from no more than 15 ft. away. Every time a Toxic Mollusk is eliminated with this weapon, refill Shells by +40. Alt-Fire: Use 10 Shells and 1 Soul to summon a Toxic Mollusk anywhere on the battlemap. The summoned Toxic Mollusk has doubled benefits when eliminated by the summoned party, but does not grant a Soul when eliminated. Also, the Toxic Mollusk can be slain by Elite and Godlike enemies.
Weapon Description
The Shellfire Shotgun is a living weapon, taking the form of an elongated nautilus-like creature. This creature was once a living, sentient denizen of Lazithia, but has now been transformed into a weapon of war by the Endless Empire. When fed gunpowder and metal, the shell is quickly digested and fired from the maw of this creature. By feeding it a Soul, it reproduces with immense speed, spawning a Toxic Mollusk from its eggs immediately. Though supposedly non-sentient, when used against those that created this weapon, a slight gurgling chuckle can be heard at a frequency unheard by natural means.
---------------------------------
This is part of a series where I reveal one aspect of the GRIM expansion that will be included in the final book! Every day, there will be a post and poll, and YOU get to decide what is shown next!
If you're interested in GRIM, my retro FPS-styled TTRPG based on Quake, check it out below!
And be on the lookout for "The Palace of Eyes", an expansion to GRIM releasing this year!

QUICK I NEED HELP DECIDING SOMETHING (PART 2)
Reminder that if you don't know what the/a dragon looks like/acts like then please search up (dragon name) httyd and info about the dragon should revel themselves!
It was kinda hard for me to find decent dragons for Donnie lol a few of these are random
Spoiler! Mikey's next and he was the easiest to find dragons for because I based what I was looking for off of his fire ability that his first weapon gave him
Actually now that I'm thinking about it, when Mikey got his new weapon, his pair of nunchucks did the fire abilities pass on too and we just didn't see them in the movie or are his nunchucks not able to blow up in flames?
