cw: reader has a curse that confers disabilities. hurt/comfort. nanami and reader are roommates and friends from high school. pregnancy mention.
your alarm goes off as it does every day, 9 am sharp, and before your eyes creak open, you prepare for the consequences of your actions the night before sucking in a deep breath. the thick sensation in your throat is familiar - the cloud that shrouds your lips is as familiar to you as a sudden, annoying pimple on the morning of a date.
but when you open your eyes and are greeted by nothing but pure darkness, the realization that for once you bit off much more than you could chew sets in, guiding you into a silent scream -
because this time, not just your speech, but your sight is also gone.
your heart thumps frantically in your chest but the rest of you is frozen stiff as you try to comprehend this new reality. the lightless expanse before you is more like an unmoving static when you force yourself to concentrate, and you can still move your eyeballs, you can blink, if you pinched yourself, and you are pretty sure you could cry if you tried, but waving your hand in front of your face gives you nothing. you sit straight up, and exercise the remainder of your muscles, trying to determine the extent of what mirai-shourai took from you this time. you can still move. you can still hear the rustling of your over-starched bedsheets as they rub together and the sound of your work computer humming; you can still feel the edge of your mattress with your fingertips, the soles of your feet planted on the ground as you try to make your way off your bed.
you can still feel your orientation in space.
you try to get up to standing, and you trip over your own two feet. you need to smell something, taste something, make sure that you haven't been deprived of anything else, but you crash to the ground instead, and you find that you can feel that, blooming pain in your face and jaw as you hit the ground instead of breaking your fall, your hand slipping on fuzzy slippers. you can taste blood trickle from your split lip; the thud is loud but you can't call for help.
it's just past 9 am and nanami is probably long gone.
your heart is racing again, panic impending. how long will it be? where is mirai-shourai? it whispers the severity of its punishments usually within just moments of you waking up but you haven't heard any sign of it or the familiar pressure of the spirit (demon really) on your shoulder. will this be forever, you wonder?
the durations of your sanctions have been getting longer recently... but this, being blinded, is new.
it's terrifying to you.
how long can you sit here? you wonder. stumbling around your home until nanami returns from work. what if he decides not to bother you tonight? what if he's preparing for a mission and won't return home? what if your phone rings and you can't find it?
your head spins as you crawl on the floor of your bedroom, your face still stinging and throbbing, until you find the wheels of your desk chair and carefully pull yourself up. you need to sit, and mercifully you make your way onto a chair without further falls, managing to steady yourself, palms pressed to your desk.
the cloud swells in your throat as your anxiety mounts and it gets harder and harder to breathe.
was it worth it?
you think of your friend's smile as you presented her with a sketch of her yet to be born child. electric blue eyes like her father, round cheeks like her sweet mother, deep dimples you could practically stick a finger in - the picture of health and joy.
it was worth it. it was worth it, you tell yourself again. your fingers tent on the desk surface. this too shall pass, this too shall pass, you chant to yourself, and yet the crushing fear is starting to set in.
what if your eyesight never comes back? what if the inability to speak is permanent?
what if, what if, what if-
"___?"
nanami is still here.
you turn, but again you can't see, and you're unsure where your gaze is directed. eyes probably unfocused as you move your head in the source of the sound, you can hear his footsteps approach, soft thumps on hardwood floor. if you call out his name he won't hear you; you have to wait until he reaches you, instead.
the door creaks open, and you can hear him stand still in the entryway. you can practically feel him hold his breath as he takes you in - you must look awful.
he doesn't ask you if you're okay, just moves, and soon, you can feel the roughness of his palms on your face, even if his touch is gentle. you can imagine his perpetually serious look, concern softening the angles of his face.
what if you never see him again either?
"what happened?" he asks.
you sign, i can't see. you can tell your hands shake as you communicate, but try to hold it together. what do my eyes look like kento?
you hear him breathe through his nose, but he's let go of your face by now, and you realize you miss the grounding sensation of another set of hands.
"they look wrong but they're there," he says. his voice is quiet, tense. "how long?"
i don't know.
you can hear his frustration. you wait for him to scold you but he doesn't.
do you have work today? you ask, hopeful.
"when i make a couple of phone calls, i won't."
you swallow, shame starting to consume you before you even ask for his help.
i don't want to inconvenience you.
"you already know i hate that job. you're giving me a reason."
this somehow makes you laugh, and although you make no audible sound, you hope he can tell that you're laughing, but then tears just as quickly stream down your face.
you rub them away and his hands return to cupping your face, thumbs lightly pressed on the space just below your eyes. you imagine he's trying to look at your face, study the curse like he's always tried to, to figure out the answer to your sudden blindness.
i'm sorry, i'm so needy.
"don't be sorry yet, i haven't promised to do anything for you," he hums.
it's true. he hasn't made any promises to you yet. with that statement, you can feel his presence shift.
"what do you want for breakfast?" he asks.
you shake your head, even though your stomach will probably start growling just a few moments from now.
"don't be difficult," he replies. "i'm hungry, make a decision so i don't have to make more than one trip."
yogurt. vanilla, you decide.
he pauses.
"how confident are you that you won't make a mess?" he jokes.
you pout, and you actually hear him chuckle.
"i'll be right back."
---
hours pass. nanami has helped you make your way onto your bed. mirai-shourai has been merciful, and you'll be able to see by the time the sun sets, to speak by tomorrow morning. soft music plays, and you're thinking about the things of the glimpses of the future that you know, and those that you don't know.
your friend's baby will be happy and healthy. you don't know when you doze off until you wake up, and the fact that you still can't sleep is still jarring, but you remember just as quickly that it will be temporary. you are thankful.
hopefully one day you'll be free of this curse, but at least you can dispel the worries of your loved ones in exchange for this inconvenience. for that, you are so, so thankful.
Ken? Are you still here?
he probably is long gone you think, and you are signing to no one, but you can hear him again from your left side, the turn of a book page reminding you of his presence.
"Yes."
something swells in your chest.
thank you for putting up with me.
you can hear him exhale from his nose sharply.
"Where else would I go? it's not like i can't afford to live anywhere else."
you smile, turning to your side and reach out a hand aimlessly. you expect him to ignore it, but you can hear the roll of the wheels of your desk chair, and your hand finds a place to rest on his shoulder, lingering for a moment. your head moves to replace it, and he guides you there in kindness.
you don't have to ask him not to leave.

think her phrase after the transformation would be “A blooming future, Cure Mirai!” I don’t know for sure what to add to the phrase, but you can give me some ideas! :3
Hi Kalea!!^^ Welcome back, and thank you for sending in an ask!! :]
I'm afraid I don't know much about Precure transformation phrases, but I can offer some linguistic insight!!! :D So, in Japanese, the phrase you gave would be: 「咲いている未来、キュア・ミライ!」 Or in the Latin alphabet "Saiteirumirai, kyua mirai!" :]
For your purposes, I assume you'll be sticking with "mirai" for "future", but there's also 将来 (shourai)!! Forgive me if I get this wrong, but shourai tends to be a more personal/individualistic word for future while mirai is more general. So if she's talking about one person's future in particular, shourai would fit better!!

𝟎𝟎𝟑 𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐂 𝟏 — 𝐆𝐄𝐇𝐄𝐍𝐍𝐀
Song: Gehenna (wotaku ft. Hatsune Miku)
Key: Lyrics in blue, romaji in bold, descriptions in black
CWS: Sui ideation, visuals of drowning, choking, pregnancy, blood, death, child death, implied attempted suicide.
[ During the instrumental intro, we see Ryuko sitting up in bed, holding her head. She turns and looks at a photo of a black-haired man sitting on the bedside table as the camera focuses on it. ]
Hey, how are you? How's it going? naa genki? choushi wa dou dai?
Yeah, well, I've quit that kind of thing already aa mou ne sou iu no yametan da
Yeah, well, I hear there's no prospect of recovery anymore un nanka mou kaifuku no mikomi wa nai sou nanda
Don't ask me anything nani mo kikanaide kure
[ Ryuko is on the phone with someone, talking away during these lyrics. On the second line, her smile turns to a frown. She moves from a sitting position to a lying-down position as she’s talking, crossing one leg over the other on the sofa. ]
Regret, estimation, a friendly talk koukai nebumi danshoukai
Caregiving, joy, sharing? I surrender all kaigo etsu kyouyuu mo sarendaa da
Yes, that's right, 100% it was my fault hai sou desu shoushinshoumei boku no sei datta
The typical story yoku aru hanashi
[ Ryuko looks down at her child, who is sitting on the floor, playing with dolls and not paying attention. During the final line, her expression darkens as she stares down at the ground, the background flashing red for a few seconds. ]
I wanted to realize plain and simple tanjunmeikai o mono ni shitakute
Killing the ideal of what it's supposed to be kaku arubeki to iu risou o koroshite
[ A shot of Ryuko and the man from the picture walking together, arms interlocked, with smiles on their faces. The sunlight quickly turns to night, and the man’s expression switches to a rather sinister one as he turns to look at Ryuko. ]
I've had it enough. I don't have the courage to leave mou sanzan datte nigeru yuuki mo nai
Hurry, deeper, falling hayaku motto ochite
[ We flash to present Ryuko, who is shaking her head aggressively. In the second line, she’s shown drowning in dark water, images of happy memories with the man playing in the background as the drowning woman hides her face in shame. ]
"I want to stay alive" "ikite itai yo"
Evеry night, transparent summary suffocates my throat maiyo nodo o fusagu toumei no gaiyou
[ The scenes in the background flash to darker imagery, bad memories Ryuko had with the man. The background begins to flash red as if splattered with blood. Ryuko’s hands move from her face to her throat as if choking herself. ]
The rеality that caves in my lungs hai o mushibamu jitsuzai mo
Irrationality and loneliness, you don't have to hate them rifujin mo kodoku mo uramanakute ii
[ The floating, drowning Ryuko rotates counterclockwise as she curls in on herself, the memories in the background alternating between good and bad memories. ]
They all mean nothing sorera subete imi wa nain da
We all have to live bokura wa ikiru shikanain da
[ We go back to reality, with Ryuko sitting up in bed once more, repeating the scene from the very start of the MV. This time, instead of looking at the picture, she looks straight at the camera with a determined expression. ]
Hey you, how are things? oi omae socchi wa dou dai?
Oh, still, you are doing that aa mada sonna koto yatten da
By the way, what happened to the one you were dating? sou iya tsukiatteta ko to wa dou nattan da?
Don't say anything anymore nani mo iwanaide kure
[ Ryuko is sitting across from a faceless blonde woman at a café, holding an infant in her arms. She’s smiling and chatting away with the other woman. On the third line, her expression darkens and her eyes widen, and on the final line, in a flash of red, the blonde woman is facing a now empty chair, dumbfounded. Where Ryuko once was now lies a puff of vanishing smoke. ]
The future, jealousy, the sense of failure shourai netami haibokukan
Wireless, I can't even hang myself up waiyaresu kubi mo tsurenai na
Yes, delightful, what a profound story hai kyouetsu taihen mi ni shimiru ohanashi deshita
Are you satisfied now? mitasareta kai?
[ Ryuko cradles the child in her arms close to her chest in a black background, red eyes watching her every move. ]
Pitch dark, clouded and broken heart makkuroku nigotte wareta kokoro o
I disinfect with alcohol to sleep arukooru de shoudoku shite nemuru
I become the gloomy water of the big ocean mou antan taru taiga no mizu ni natte
Deeper, deeper, deeper, deeper, falling motto motto motto motto ochite
[ Ryuko falls back into the water, only this time, it’s red. She’s less worried about drowning this time, seemingly apathetic to the situation. She’s still cradling her child close to her. Memories flash in the background, except this time, it’s memories of who she was before meeting the man. ]
"I want to stay alive" "ikite itai yo"
Every night, the air and the future grab my throat maiyo nodo o tsukamu kuuki mo mirai mo
[ One of her hands reaches up to grab at her throat while the other holds her child. The memories in the background are replaced by memories of Ryuko trying to find the man after he disappears. ]
Flesh that deceives to be the organs naizou o kataru nikukai mo
Happiness, the space, you don't have to be skeptical shiawase mo uchuu mo utagawanakute ii
[ The memories in the background show clips of Ryuko’s pregnancy up until the birth of her daughter. Ryuko is rotating counterclockwise like before. Her arm returns to its place of holding her daughter. ]
They all don't change sorera subete kawaranain da
We all don't have to know bokura wa shiranakute iin da
[ We see the Ryuko in reality holding a paper and looking over at her child. ]
"I want to stay alive" "ikite itai yo"
I don't know why, but "I want to stay alive" nande ka wakaranai kedo "ikite itai yo"
[ The drowning Ryuko switches the direction she’s rotating in. ]
The Bible called DNA DNA to iu seisho
You don't have to hate on your instinct and fears honnou mo kyoufu mo uramanakute ii
Nothing will ever change douse nani mo kawaranain da
[ The memories change to one singular image of the man’s grinning face in every bubble as the child disappears in a puff of smoke from Ryuko’s arms as the background turns black. As the child disappears, all movement freezes on the final line, Ryuko becoming a white silhouette reminiscent of a crime scene outline for a moment. ]
"I want to stay alive" "ikite itai yo"
There's no hope ahead, but "I want to stay alive" nan no kibou mo nai kedo "ikite itai yo"
My instinct thumps in red honnou wa akaku myakuutsu no
"I want to stay alive," "I don't want to stay alive" "ikite itai yo" "ikitetakunai yo"
It's so unfortunate hontou ni zannen dakedo
But we all have to live bokura wa ikiru shikanain da
[ Throughout these lines, the background flashes between red and black in time with the music. The memories in the back switch to a dark bedroom with red blood splatters, then switch to a lone window with billowing red curtains, and then back and forth until the end of the stanza. ]
I'm sorry I deceived you damashite gomen yo
[ We flash back to reality, where Ryuko lies on the floor, hugging her knees, tears streaming down her face. ]
I'm sorry I couldn't tell you ienakute gomen yo
[ The scene flashes to her sleeping child in the bed, but the child doesn’t seem to be moving anymore. ]
And this is so sad soshite hontou ni kanashii keredo
[ The camera switches back to Ryuko, who is still crying, but smiling now. ]
But only suffering is the bond kurushimi dake ga kizuna nanda
[ The scene zooms out to a now-empty room, with the same open window and billowing red curtains as shown in one of the earlier memories. ]

[Lyrics & translation under cut]
ENGLISH:
Doodled textbooks and myself looking outside all the time. Sky above a skyscraper, I dreamed unreachable dream. I want to break the door of my feelings that have no way out. If I smoke behind the school building, there's no way of escape.
We will crouch down, gather in a lump while turning our backs against adults. I will glare at adults who doesn't know anything about us. And my friends plan to run away from home tonight. Anyway, I don't want to go back to school or home anymore. I'm trembling without even knowing what I am. It's a night of fifteen years old.
I will ride on a stolen bike without knowing the destination. I will run into the dark night. I didn't want to be tied up by anyone, I felt free when I ran away from everything on this night. It's a night of fifteen years old.
Cold wind, cold body, I miss people. I will run past the house of that sleeping girl, while whispering goodbye. In the dark, vending machine stood alone. Warmth that you can buy for 100 yen, I will tightly grasp hot canned coffee.
I don't know how love ends, but that girl and I have always dreamed of a future together. Adults told me to give up my love, but I don't like it at all. If those boring lessons are everything we have, What a petty, what a meaningless, what a powerless fifteen years old.
I will ride on a stolen bike without knowing the destination. I will run into the dark night. I will smoke a freshly learned cigarette. I continued to seek freedom while staring at the starry sky. A fifteen years old night.
I will ride on a stolen bike without knowing the destination. I will run into the dark night. I didn't want to be tied up by anyone, I felt free when I ran away from everything on this night. It's a night of fifteen years old.

✹ Notas Off Rol.

cw: part of cursed!reader series.
mirai-shourai has been quiet all day and the anger you swallow in your throat is thick and bitter as you try to keep your emotions in check. to think that your endless tormenter has decided to leave your side at a time like this, when it's dire and you need it more than ever is cruel, even for the cursed spirit itself. your shoulders are weightless, and you take a deep breath in as you remember the last thing it said to you, weeks before today.
kento will die soon.
no other detail than that, but somehow you know in your soul that it'll be today, even if you have no proof. but what more can you say than the eternally useless words, be careful.
shibuya station.
your fingers twitch as you gather with the remaining sorcerers and students who have answered this call to action. gojo is unreachable, and you don't know if your friend is with him or not, but she is unreachable as well, which doesn't particularly bode well.
the veil stretches before you, and you will only know if you enter within.
kento glances at you, and you shake your head slowly, without saying a word. there are multiple questions in his obscured gaze. what do you know? why are you shaking?
are you coming with me?
you can only answer the last one.
perhaps you are still rusty and your hand to hand combat skills are not particularly up to par after years sitting at a desk and doing the bare minimum, but your cursed energy materializes into a sniper rifle just as easily as it did when you were just a couple years out of graduation. you take a deep breath and step forward, only to hear nanami speak directly to you for the first time.
"no."
a small gasp leaves your throat. stricken dumb by his sudden statement, loud enough for other sorcerers, even students to hear, you feel a sudden wash of embarrassment run through your features. nanami doesn't seem to recognize why you've been so immediately taken aback but he also doesn't seem to care. instead he clarifies,
"stay out here and protect the civilians."
you tense, the loose fingers of your left balling into a fist, the fingers of your right tightening its grip around your weapon. rather than aggravate the situation further, you decide to laugh it off.
"kento, you're not my father, come on." you step further, but he's not laughing with you, the same stern face he keeps with everyone now pointed towards you. your heart pounds in your chest.
he doesn't say another word and the two of you hold gazes at the moment - you demand an explanation; he will give you none. but you know - if you take another step, he'll be furious and somehow... you look around and grit your teeth.
you don't want to create a scene, but he's right. you haven't fought in years, you'll only slow everyone down. if anything, you can protect, you can use your sight, but otherwise...
all gazes are turned suddenly to the sound of yuuji calling for nanami.
"gojo-sensei has been sealed!"
the very air shifts. nanami no longer plans to fight you and re-strategizes. your rifle vanishes and you concentrate.
mirai-shourai, tell me something, anything, you whisper into the darkness of your conscious. the cursed spirit is silent and if you could, you would strangle it.
"we're meeting up with itadori at once."
megumi and ino follow, the latter glancing back at you for a moment, seeing the look in your eyes, but saying nothing.
and you have nothing else to say at this time. kento will not believe you if you prophesize his death right now, and even worse, if he does believe you, it won't stop him from going anyway. if anything, it'll make it unforgivable for you to follow him despite his best wishes and try to keep him safe.
you turn on your heels, trying to storm off without making it apparent. a few moments pass and you look at your phone, then look back. he's long gone.
you know he will hate you for this, but you have to.
please don't die, you text, and you materialize your weapon again, your first target, a cursed spirit, suddenly in your sights.

Syaoran: RAITEI SHOURAI! Fei Wang: You seem, in some respects, familiar with the ways of magic. If so, then you must understand that you cannot win. The next time you take my attack, you will die. You will fight for the sake of your wish? Will your wish and mine become the same?
